east coast weather causing major problems for the millions traveling this holiday weekend. this holiday weekend that's now coming to a close on this december 1st. it is already december. lisa. >> yes, i know we're getting into a very dry weather pattern. a spare the air alert issued for today and tomorrow as hazy conditions will continue. we have a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. we have fog by the delta. you see the cloud cover there and what looks like rain in parts of the north bay. this is evaporating before it reaches the ground. and that dense fog advisory, including vallejo six 8-80 the delta there out by fairfield and visibility reduced to just about a mile there. so be careful. and as we look at the air quality right now, it is moderate all around the bay. the winds will be light, so that's really not going to help us out. high pressure continues to build. it is 50 in hayward and 50 in novato as well as vallejo. so the cold temperatures not with us this morning 16 degrees warmer in novato seven degrees milder in san jose. so

throughout the morning hours the clouds will part will be left with hazy to sunny conditions with mid and upper 60s today, overnight lows again will be on the mild side. we'll talk about how long this drier and warmer trend lasts coming up. zach. >> lisa. thank you. new details about the fiery crash that killed three college students in piedmont. officials have released their names and are sharing memories from their families about those young lives lost. sean dixon, kristen tsukahara and jack nelson died when the tesla cybertruck they were in crashed. a fourth person who was injured in the crash remains in the hospital. all were 2023 graduates of piedmont high school and were home for the thanksgiving holiday. the city released statements from the families of the three victims who died in that crash. sean dixon was a student and lacrosse player at usc. his family wrote sean lit up a room, made friends easily, and had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. kristen tsukahara or krista tsukahara, excuse me, was a

sophomore at the savannah college of art and design. her family says she will be remembered for her kind and sensitive heart, love for her family and friends, and for her incredible eye for style and design. jack nelson attended the university of colorado. his family remembered his adventurous spirit, saying he cared deeply for other people and had a strong faith. he proudly shared through the cross. he wore every day. now there's still no word on the cause of the crash. the california highway patrol is investigating. the chronicle reports that the national highway traffic safety administration is also part of that investigation. well, a scary scene at a farmers market at el cerrito plaza saturday morning. a car crashed through the market, hitting one person. el cerrito police did not share details, but a witness tells abc seven news that the pedestrian was an older man who appeared to be in his 70s. both the driver and the pedestrian were injured and transported away from the scene of the crash. police have not released any updates yet. an armed carjacker is now in custody after vallejo police

fired rubber bullets at him during a standoff. police say a ski masked gunman stole a 2001 bmw. 740 near sonoma boulevard and tennessee street on thanksgiving. officers later spotted him driving the stolen car near springs road and oakwood avenue. after a forced stop, the man fled the vehicle and hid in a nearby apartment complex. he was forced to surrender after officers fired a round of rubber bullets near him. authorities recovered the gun and the vehicle was returned to its owner. and police in san mateo county say san mateo and burlingame officers shot a man after he pointed a gun at them yesterday morning. they were investigating possible gunshots in a burlingame neighborhood. police say when they arrived, a man pointed a gun at them and ran off. he was found near myrtle and bayswater roads, yelling in the streets. now, police say efforts to de-escalate failed. they shot the man when he refused to drop the gun. he was taken to a nearby hospital and on the peninsula. a scare for a large group of boaters on oyster

point. they had to be rescued after being hit by a large wave. the coast guard says just after 830 saturday morning, 18 people, including two children, set out on a board a 14 foot long wooden wooden dragon boat and the wave knocked 15 of those people into the water. all, thankfully, were rescued safely and no one was seriously injured. well, a season marked by debate and national attention for the san jose state women's volleyball team may be over for match point, and the championship. >> and it's an ace for colorado state. >> the spartans lost to colorado state yesterday in the finals of the mountain west conference tournament. san jose state season has been marked by forfeits, protests and a lawsuit centered on gender identity. several schools forfeited games rather than play the spartans claiming there was a transgender player on san jose state's team who should be blocked from

participating. the university and player have never said how they identify. >> i don't want to talk necessarily about the way we played. i want to talk about how proud i am of them. they fought all the way through the end. they showed a lot of heart. they showed a lot of desire. they showed a lot of moxie. they showed a lot of character throughout the season. i don't think any of those things can be taken for granted. >> a lawsuit was recently filed by players from various schools, including a player from san jose state. they claim the athlete in question is getting preferential treatment. the spartans still have a chance to extend their season if selected to play in the ncaa tournament. in oakland, a young teenager from gaza met supporters who helped to bring him to the u.s. for medical treatment. a south bay doctor also played a role in getting him here following a chance encounter back in february. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story and a warning. this story contains some graphic language. >> ahmed abu obeida is 15 years old. he lost both his legs in an

israeli drone strike in february while he was out picking vegetables near his home in gaza. he came to the bay area to learn to walk again. >> with the intent, emmett explains, he was hit in the legs, hand and face. >> his house was destroyed. he knows he's lucky not just to be alive, but also to be among the lucky few cleared by israeli authorities to seek medical treatment abroad. >> farhan al-haj walked with the help of organizations like heal palestine and shriners hospital. >> emmett and his mom arrived at sfo in july. since then, it has been months of grueling treatments, including strength training for his upper body and learning to walk again. >> ahmed came to me on the verge of death. he was hemorrhaging. >> doctor mohamed is an emergency physician in saratoga. he's done two volunteer medical missions to gaza. on the second day of his first trip, he was the doctor who had to amputate his legs in a makeshift tent hospital without anesthesia. >> not much in terms of

equipment and medications were available to us, and so it made it nearly impossible to save people's lives or save limbs. >> doctor says ahmed is mature beyond his 15 years. >> his soul is so beautiful. you sit and talk to him just for a few minutes and you realize his perspective on life and his gratitude. and i think we have a lot to learn from children like ahmed in terms of their resilience and their ability to see purpose in their life. >> through it all, ahmed says he has learned strength, courage and patience. he's a soccer fan, likes video games, and like most teens, keeps busy on social media. what he is not is a victim. he says he is young and that gives him time to rebuild a life in service of his country and community in the east bay. anser hassan abc seven news. >> well, a shrill sound that comes from the golden gate bridge on windy days might be silenced as soon as next year.

yeah, that is what we're talking about. a noise that's been described as whistling, whining or wailing. it's been happening since 2020, when the bridge was retrofitted to make it safer. vertical slats were installed along the handrails with the intent of allowing more air through, but they also turned the bridge into a giant instrument of sorts. right. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge right now. the san francisco chronicle reports a project to install noise suppressors will begin in the next few months. clips with rubber sleeves will be attached to all 12,000 slats. the work is expected to last at least a year and cost about $450,000. all right. we've got a lot more ahead. let's check in with lisa. >> it's mild out there, zach. 40s and 50s due to cloud cover. a spare the air alert and mild temperatures throughout the afternoon. we'll get into some sunshine, but more cloud cover with us this morning will lead to any rain. i'll have the answers next. >> thank you. lisa. also ahead,

>> obviously, we can't compete with the bigger brands and stuff like that, but we all got to start small and we all got to start somewhere. so getting the support for the small businesses is always two thumbs up. >> in the east bay. lena howland abc seven news. >> yeah, it looks like it was a good time, and we're still waiting for some more numbers on black friday, which is the day considered to be the official start to the holiday shopping season. early reports show people were not going to the stores, but snapping up deals online. now, adobe analytics says people spent nearly $11 billion friday, which is an increase of 10% from last year. in-store shopping might be a different story. retail next says so far, its data shows a drop in traffic of a little over 3%. the city of san francisco kicked off its second entertainment zone last night at thrive city, outside chase center. this comes a little over two months after the very first entertainment zone debuted on front street winter wonderland combined holiday festivities, special appearances, and a chance to feature local

let's talk about this so-called precip, which, you know, could offer up a sprinkle or two. you can see up towards the north bay there, west of penngrove highway 101. but most this evaporating before it reaches the ground and to the south of us here, as it continues to ride up here to the east of us highway five could see a few sprinkles. otherwise, we're counting on these clouds dissipating somewhat today for a partly cloudy afternoon. there are the mild readings from 53 downtown oakland. and look at that. 51 in san jose, ten degrees warmer in redwood city, at least. and that sun coming up after seven. this is our exploratorium camera 42, santa rosa. normally we see all of these 30s here, even in our inland valleys. so we've been dealing with the fog a little bit and the mild temperatures. this is going to be the way it's going to stay for the next several days. how about for the week where we have temperatures above average in the morning, some patchy fog spare the air

alert in the afternoon light almost nonexistent winds except for those drainage winds, those winds that are slightly offshore that pulls in that tule fog from the central valley, allowing for the reduced visibility in our inland east bay. so our air quality right now, it's moderate. it's not going to get a whole lot better throughout the day, maybe a couple hours there throughout the middle of the afternoon. things really brighten up. and then they warm up for our afternoon highs around 3:00. there's a look at that light breeze, cloudy. not as cold this morning, today and tomorrow a spare. the air alert and it could continue beyond that. and then the rest of the week we are counting on that december warmth unfortunately. but that does follow the la nina pattern, which gives us warmer than average temperatures. and we're getting into a dry slot, a dry pattern here. partly cloudy throughout the day today, even into your monday. plenty of sunshine returns into tuesday, so afternoon highs today from the mid 60s. once again. it was 66 in oakland yesterday. it was 64. half moon bay, upper 60s on

a big shakeup could be coming to the fbi. president elect trump has announced plans for a new director. this while the current director appointed by trump back in 2017, still has plenty of time left in his term. got plenty of news to get to for you this morning, but first, this half hour. let's get a look at the weather. >> okay. that sun coming up in a little bit. we're beginning to see a pretty sunrise out there, but we do have some cloud cover. santa cruz right now is at 50 degrees and going for a high in the mid 60s today. 53 much milder in oakland and hayward this morning. san jose 51. redwood city is up and from mount tam you can see the cloud

prime minister justin trudeau at mar a lago. trudeau making the surprise visit last night after trump threatened sweeping 25% across the board. tariffs on goods from canada and mexico. trump accusing both countries of allowing drugs and illegal migrants to flow into the u.s. also at the table, david mccormick, the newly elected republican senator of pennsylvania. trump posting on social media. the two leaders discussed fentanyl trade deals and what trump says is a trade deficit between canada and the u.s, despite the two countries operating under a trade deal that trump crafted in his first term. >> it was a it was a nice conversation. >> trudeau telling reporters tariffs wouldn't just harm canadians, but would also raise prices for u.s. consumers and harm industries here at home. canada is the second largest trading partner of the u.s, behind only mexico, both countries accounting for more than $1 trillion in trade. a year. president biden urging caution. >> we have an unusual situation in america. we're surrounded by

the pacific ocean, the atlantic ocean and two allies mexico and canada. and the last thing we need to do is begin to screw up those relationships. >> and trump today naming charles kushner, the father of his son in law, jared kushner, as his choice for ambassador to france. kushner was convicted in 2005 of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering. trump pardoned him in the final days of his first term in west palm beach, florida. jay o'brien, abc news. >> and president elect donald trump announced plans to appoint kash patel as the next fbi director. patel is described as a trump loyalist and has said the fbi needs to go after journalists and anyone that he falsely claims rigged. the 2020 presidential election. current director christopher wray has three years left in his ten year term and would need to either quit or be fired for patel to step in. trump appointed wray in 2017 after firing james comey. and this news comes just after news that trump has turned to

the bay area for his choice to head the nation's leading medical research agency. i was able to look further into the experience of stanford's doctor, jay bhattacharya. doctor jay bhattacharya is a professor of health policy at stanford university and now the nominee to be the next director of the national institutes of health. in a statement on social media, he said he was humbled by the nomination and promised reform. bhattacharya has made national news long before this nomination. >> the harms from these lockdowns are absolutely devastating. >> that was an interview abc seven did with doctor bhattacharya back in 2020. he openly opposed the covid lockdown restrictions at the time. in october that year, he was one of three authors of the great barrington declaration, an open letter that promoted herd immunity or that people at low risk should live normally to build immunity and those at higher risk should be protected. fast forward more than four years later, some in the local medical community are looking back at his views differently. >> and i think no one got the pandemic right, but there was a

lot in his approach that, in retrospect, actually made sense. >> doctor monica gandhi is a professor of medicine and infectious disease doctor at ucsf. the university is funded by the nih. she says she'll be closely watching how the trump administration handles infectious disease research. >> i can't say i'm not nervous because our universities not only depend on this money, but it's not the time to, you know, we stop hiv research. we just we have a lot of work to do. on the other hand, i think doctor bhattacharya is kind. he is gentle. he has had a complete reputation of being respectful, of listening to others, and i think that gives me a lot of hope about his leadership. >> political science professor doctor melissa michaelson says bhattacharya's nomination has many in the bay area higher education circles questioning his experience and ability to run the large agency. she said his nomination, along with trump's nominations of robert f kennedy jr and doctor mehmet oz, could indicate what future public health policy will look

to screen 3 million passengers. millions more will be driving up to six inches of snow falling along the i-70 corridor from topeka through kansas city union station. a winter wonderland lake effect snow creating challenges along the great lakes from michigan to upstate new york. erie, pennsylvania turned into a frozen tundra with more than 30in of snow. further east in dunkirk, whiteout conditions, the roads barely visible at times. a state of emergency declared for parts of new york. in buffalo, superfans helping to shovel out highmark stadium ahead of tonight's game against the 49 ers. some parts of the region could get more than five feet of snow by monday. >> make sure you're being vigilant if you're heading out of the house and going anywhere, make sure you're checking what the weather forecast might be. >> in new york city, temperatures dipping into the 30s. the real feel in the 20s in bryant park, folks bundled up getting into the holiday spirit

and more wintry weather could be on the way. >> it's going to bring widespread snow to everyone in the northeast by the middle of next week, likely a little too early to know exactly how much snow, but we are talking about inches of snow for the northeast and even new york city might see their first snow of the year. >> chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> southwest airlines passengers will have to get ready for landing earlier than normal. starting wednesday, flight attendants will begin preparing the cabin for landing at 18,000ft instead of the usual 10,000ft. so that means seat backs will need to be raised and tray tables stowed about ten minutes earlier than normal. southwest says that this is all to protect flight attendants from turbulence. well, the famed notre dame cathedral in paris is set to reopen on december 7th. it closed down in april 2019 after a devastating fire destroyed much of the 800 year old cathedral. the fire is believed to have been an accident, not arson. over the past five years, more than 1200 artisans helped restore the

they need to be, you know, in a safe place out of the inclement weather. they just want to be able to walk in, have a bed for the night and leave in the morning. >> people are also offered a shower, dinner and breakfast. the san francisco interfaith council started this program 36 years ago. >> it's safe to because people are treated with respect and dignity and so they want to come for us. also, it's a it's a social and a moral imperative. >> we told solomon gabra about the winter shelter, which coincidentally is located less than a block from where we found him, the one on the corner, the senior center. yeah. that one. but while many people may benefit from this act of generosity for some it's a matter of choice. it's always their decision. >> i find it more peaceful here in my tent. i call it my little hobbit hole. and i have more serenity and tranquility. this way.

monday that continues on tuesday, and a look at western new york where we've had problems around 90. that's where the highway was shut down 29 degrees at about 5:00 and then upper 20s breezy to gusty winds, a half a foot of snow on the ground, and then maybe an inch or so or less during the game. have that cold air from thes. we north moving over the relatively warm waters of lake erie, just below toronto. there. and that's where we get those snow bands dumping that snow in the southtowns of buffalo, which orchard park is not. so that's why they're not getting as much, but still cold and blizzardy in parts of that region as it usually is. 67 in livermore, 64 in napa today, mid 60s along the coast. this is above average. it's hazy. spare the air alert for the next day or two, and we could see that continue. and as we get into the workweek, very little change. light winds, high pressure, hazy conditions, plenty of 60s out there and in
