news starts right now. >> i caught him in the act and so i shouted at him and said, hey, this is a citizen's arrest. you've been caught. you need to stop. stop and stay still. the police are going to be here any minute. and he didn't like that, so he tried to escape. >> and that's just the start of a wild thanksgiving confrontation for a pastor who took down a church burglar. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. it is a story of holiday heroics and standing up for one's rights. thanksgiving morning, someone broke into the first family

church in antioch. and the events that followed involved a scuffle and a pastor ready to do more than turn the other cheek. abc seven news reporter anser hassan talked to the pastor about what happened next. >> as you can see, this window is all smashed to pieces and he had broken it open and it looked like he climbed up on these these bins which we use for our food distribution. and he just kind of made his way through. we boarded it up. >> it wasn't the normal festive start to thanksgiving. pastor nik neves was expecting at first family church in antioch. >> he came at me through the kitchen holding a box of our materials. at that point, i told him to stop and he didn't want to stop. so he ran and i ran after him and grabbed ahold of him. but i didn't get ahold of him until we got out to the parking lot. >> what the suspect didn't know is that pastor neves knows how to fight. he used his years of martial arts training in jiu jitsu and kickboxing to overcome the would-be robber, until police came. he says they wrestled for 12 to 15 minutes.

>> just using positioning and i tried to maintain back control on the gentleman so that he wasn't able to strike at me very effectively, and i tried to keep control of his hands so that if he had a weapon of some kind, i would be able to keep him from getting that weapon and use it against me. >> just after midnight on thanksgiving, pastor neves was alerted to the break in. the damage totals a few thousand dollars, which can be a lot for a small church. >> what i didn't want to see is just him run off and then come back later and rob us again. you can find that sometimes there becomes a pattern where you get victimized a lot. if you don't do anything to stand up for yourself. >> neves doesn't recommend chasing after would be assailan, but he says he does believe in standing up for justice. >> being a loving person doesn't mean you have to be a weak person. and humility and strength are not antithesis to each other. if there's a situation where you need to stand up for yourself, i don't think you have to apologize for that. >> antioch police arrested the suspect, who neves believes is likely a homeless man. antioch pd did not return requests for comment. neves says he will cooperate in the investigation,

but he also hopes for a chance to talk to the suspect. >> i hope i have an opportunity to meet him in better circumstances and maybe talk to him a little bit without the panic of him getting arrested in antioch, anser hassan. >> abc seven news. >> closing arguments are expected tomorrow in the nearly two month long trial of the man accused of killing san francisco tech mogul bob lee. the jury could get the case as early as tomorrow afternoon. in the trial of nema mckinney. prosecutors say mckinney stabbed lee in the chest during some kind of confrontation in the soma neighborhood in april of last year. he testified he acted in self defense after lee attacked him. president biden has pardoned his son, hunter biden, months after hunter biden pleaded guilty to federal tax charges. the decision marks a reversal fr the president, who had said hefr would not use his executive authority to pardon his son or commute his sentence. in issuing the pardon, the president issued

a statement that reads in part, quote, no reasonable person who looks at the facts of hunter's cases can reach any other conclusion than hunter was singled out only because he is my son and that is wrong. it goes on to say, quote, there has been an effort to break hunter in trying to break hunter. they've tried to break me and there's no reason to believe it will stop here. enough is enough. happening now. the holiday travel rush is back on. taka live look now at san franciscoka international airport, where those red eye flights are getting ready to depart. it's been smooth all day with a few delays and cancellations in fact, all four bay area airports are showing no major problems. sfo expects 6.3 million travelers to pass through between thanksgiving and new year's day. that's a 15% increase over last year. we also saw a steady stream of cars flowing in to drop off and pick up fliers. >> first family. second. the dolphins game we went to and

third, probably the sweet potato marshmallows. >> those are all three good reasons. >> lots to be thankful for. the crowds and lines were manageable at mineta san jose as well. the same goes for oakland's airport, where an estimated 340,000 passengers passed through this holiday weekend. well, moving on to the forecast and a spare. the air alert is in effect through tomorrow. let's get to meteorologist shayla gerardin with more on this. >> shayla, we've got some mild conditions out there to start your workweek, but we are still going to see this. spare the air alert in effect through tomorrow. so the north bay along the coast into the central bay and even the santa clara valley all going to see poor air quality conditions tomorrow. so if you can minimize that time outdoors until this expires and that air quality improves as we head into about midweek. otherwise, though, heading into tomorrow, overall conditions are going to be nice. we just have some very chilly mornings ahead the coast. you'll see your morning start off in the 40s with some of that fog developing once again by 9

a.m. back in the 50s though, and tomorrow you'll see highs making it to the 60s with a mix of sun and cloud along the bay. not going to be quite as chilly. you will dip into the 50s though, this tonight and then tomorrow, starting off your morning in the 50s as well, with temps only warm into the 60s tomorrow, and then finally inland spots. you've got a cool start as well. tomorrow morning expect to see temperatures in the 40s, so have those layers handy. you'll be in the 50s by 9 a.m. and then making it to the 60s tomorrow afternoon as well. we do have some really nice warm conditions on the way this week. a warm start overall to the month of december. i'll have your full forecast coming up later in the show, but for now i'll toss it back to yo. >> all right. sounds like a plan. well, there's a buzz f excitement in alameda now that the christmas tree lane is lit up. this is the 86th year. big crowds are turning out to marvel at the dazzling displays. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn gives us a closer look at the opening night. >> wow, this is a new addition. >> you'll hear lots of wows and whoas on christmas tree lane in alameda, and this home full of

tomorrow, hence the name. but you can already get a head start on scoring a deal. amazon and walmart are among the major retailers offering up their cyber monday specials today, and shoppers certainly are looking for those deals. 39% of people questioned in a new national retail federation survey say they plan to shop on cyber monday. that's more than 72 million people. shoppers already clicked their way to an online record for black friday spending, making one $10.8 billion in purchases. that's up more than 10% over last year. that's according to adobe analytics. now, many shoppers are choosing the buy now, pay later option, accounting for

more than $686 million in online sales. san francisco drivers are fuming over a proposal to charge for parking in one of the city's densest residential neighborhoods. the municipal transportation agency wants to convert street parking in spots in parts of the marina, cow hollow and union street into metered spots. residents in the areas can apply for a residential parking permit so they can avoid paying and time limits. business owners and neighbors, though, are not pleased with the proposal. >> expanding that program out into the residential blocks. i mean, i guess it produces incremental revenue for mta, but that's the only benefit. and that money comes from the pockets of people who don't have a lot of money. >> now, here is the statement from the mta who sent us this quote saying this is intended to make it easier for residents and visitors to park where visitor demand is very high. the city is hosting an open house at 5

p.m. at the moscone rec center, where residents can voice their opinions with many bay area cities struggling to pay the bills, there's actually a bright spot in the north bay. the city of napa says it expects to have a $4.6 million surplus going into next year. that's according to the press democrat. that's after the city brought in more revenue than expected, and the city spent less than projected. those numbers do need to be audited before the city can decide how to spend those extra funds. it is down to the wire for an east bay toy drive, and they desperately need your help this holiday season. take a look. this is the 18th year for oakland chinatown's christmas in the park toy drive. volunteers partner up with the oakland chinatown chamber, the oakland chinatown improvement council, lions club, and more to gather the toys, then distribute them to families in need. now in years past, organizer karen chung says they'd gather two or even 300 or so toys by this tim. but in their donation bins this

tonight we see those cool and cloudy conditions returning for most of us. tomorrow there will be a spare the air alert in effect though once again. so air quality going to be a big concern especially for certain spots. so if you can minimize that time outdoors, that's ideal. i'll show you that in just a moment. and then a pretty mellow end to your week. we're talking about a dry pattern ahead is going to be feeling a lot more like summer than december. as we head into the next couple of days, we've got a warm start to the month, so here's those cool and cloudy conditions we were talking about overnight. you can see that cloud cover moving in once again, a chance that we could see a little bit of fog forming as well as we head into early tomorrow for the north bay and then heading into tomorrow as well. again, air quality going to continue to be a concern that spare the air alert sticking around through. at least tomorrow you can see the north bay even into the coast. central bay and down into the santa clara valley. all concerned you will be dealing with poor air quality. the rest of the area just moderate conditions. but still, if you can minimize that time outdoors tomorrow, definitely ideal. overall though, the rest of the week pretty mild conditions will continue to see that mix of

sun and clouds. morning fog possible, but staying dry and warm as we head into the end of the week. we do have high pressure in the mix, so that's going to continue to keep our temperatures warm and keeping us dry as well. but overnight lows going to be chilly out there for many of us. we are dipping into the 40s. for most of you. 44 in richmond, vallejo coming in 42 low 40s as well for concord, but fairfield coming in 37 degrees. lakeport, santa rosa also dipping into those 30s tonight. then tomorrow the nice warm conditions continue. most of you will see temperatures in the 60s 65 in oakland, half moon bay coming in 64, san francisco also coming in mid 60s at 64 degrees, but a couple spots just making it to the 70s. san jose, morgan hill coming in at 72 degrees. and look at this. not too much changes as we head into monday tuesday and even to wednesday. overall, you really get to rinse and repeat those temperatures, even for our inland spots. it's not really until we get into the end of the week that you're going to start to feel these temperatures shifting a little bit more.

we have a very gradual cooldown that's going to be coming our way. all right, inland spots 68 tomorrow. still under that spare the air alert. of course. that gradual cooldown for you coming tuesday wednesday even into thursday. temperatures not changing for you too much. finally coming in the chilliest next weekend. so next saturday 62 for you with more cloud cover in the mix by the bay. just making it to that 70 degree mark tomorrow, you gradually cool through about midweek, coming in at 66 degrees. then once again saturday going to be the coolest conditions for you at 64, with a nice warm up for you by next sunday. 68 degrees. finally, the coast temperatures not changing for you too much 64 tomorrow slight warm up for you as you head into tuesday. then that cooldown going to be 62 degrees for both saturday, but overall, above average conditions and a pretty warm start to the month of december. >> still ahead tonight on abc7 news at 11. free ferry rides, all in the name of education. the field trips on the water that could ultimately le

well. let it snow, let it snow. the 40 niners facing the bills on the first day of december in buffalo. and it did not disappoint. santa was there, of course, and there was already two feet of snow on the ground. it continued to fall throughout the game. temperatures mostly in the high 20s, with it feeling

about ten degrees colder. and oh yeah, the 40 niners faint playoff hopes were hanging in the balance in buffalo. snow games you get to dig out your own seat. where do you get a shovel? these final 40 niners fans finally found their spot. high fives there christian mccaffrey started out great but trouble here immediately dropping to the ground and taking the toss. handoff limped off the field. the fear is a season ending acl injury. we'll learn more tomorrow. an mri scheduled for monday. unfortunate for mccaffrey who's been hurt most of all season. and it's all bills from there. they didn't have trouble finding their footing. hand it off to james cook. and he gets to the outside and he's going to turn on the afterburners. speeds down the sideline 65 yards to paydirt. made it 14 three fans in orchard park tossing snow snowballs and the bills led 21 three at the half. third quarter the niners drive right down the field to open it up. first and goal. fullback kyle juszczyk fumbles the football. it's punched out. buffalo grabs it.

reaction tonight to the stunning about face from president biden. the president announcing today he's giving his son hunter, a full presidential pardon. the younger biden had been convicted on federal gun and tax related charges, and was set to be

sentenced this month. abc news reporter alison kosik has the latest, including the response tonight from the president elect. trump. >> president biden pardoning his son hunter, on federal gun and tax charges. the younger biden was convicted over the summer on gun charges and agreed in september to plead guilty to nine tax related charges, including three felonies, on the eve of what was expected to be a lengthy and grueling trial. he was due to be sentenced in both cases later this month. the president had long said he would not pardon his son, expressing faith in the justice system and the rule of law, telling abc's david muir in an interview in june will you accept the jury's outcome, their verdict? >> no matter what it is? >> yes. >> and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? >> yes. >> when asked about the president's intentions to pardon hunter shortly after the election, white house press secretary karine jean-pierre had

this to say. >> we've been asked that question multiple times. our answer stands, which is no. >> hunter biden releasing a statement saying he takes responsibility for his mistakes, adding he will never take what he's been given for granted. meantime, president elect trump, criticizing the decision. his spokesperson steven cheung telling abc news the doj has weaponized the justice system and that trump will fix it upon his return to the white house. alison kosik abc news, new york. >> across the country, heavy snow has created hazardous driving conditions across the east coast and great lakesthe region. the lake effect snow warning is in effect from cleveland to buffalo, where driving has become treacherous and downright impossible for many. >> we're using front end loader, backhoes, skid steers, anything we have to remove snow to at least get one side of the street open. >> yeah, i think the bay area has the best weather of the country despite the heavy snow, there have been no major problems reported at the

nation's airports. the faa is using special airspace designed for military use off the atlantic and gulf of mexico for commercial flights to alleviate some of the busyness in the skies. six people are in the hospital tonight after a house explosion in missouri. take a look. the huge blast leveled this home in jefferson city just before 3 a.m. last night, and trapped those people in the rubble. dozens of first responders rushed to the scene, where fire officials say it took more than three hours to dig through the extensive damage and debris to reach all six victims. three remain in critical condition. two pets were also rescued. authorities are still trying to determine a cause. a big week for the supreme court with two cases that could impact american teens tomorrow. the justices will hear arguments in a dispute over flavored vapesin and whether their sales were illegally blocked by the fda. two companies denied applications to sell the flavored vapes are leading the lawsuit. they argue their

products help people quit traditional cigarettes, and that ruling against them could destroy the vaping industry. medical groups arguing against e-cigarettes say the use of them by young people is creating a public health crisis. then on wednesday, one of the highest profile cases to reach the supreme court this term. tennessee's ban on gender affirming care to transgender patients under the age of 18. three trans teens and their parents are challenging the law through federal court. the biden administration joined their case, arguing a constitutional infringement on equal protection. decisions in both cases are expected by june of next year. house speaker emerita nancy pelosi will have a building named in her honor tomorrow. the 18 story san francisco federal building on the corner of mission and seventh streets will be formally dedicated to pelosi, a longtime bay area representative in congress. new signage with her name will be displayed on that

tower, and the building opened in 2007 and houses offices for pelosi and other u.s. department services. pelosi has represented california's 11th congressional district for 37 years, and in 2007, she was elected the first woman to serve as speaker of the house. this week, the california legislature will hit a milestone for equal representation by gender. the senate will be at least 50% women for the first time, and the assembly will be swearing in a record number of women. abc seven news reporter monica madden explains why it's more than just a milestone. >> there are dozens of new members headed to the capitol next week for the special session, and the majority of them are women. >> these are my important women that are in my office. >> a wall of women in power. badass women serving as an inspiration for a powerful woman herself. >> i never thought we'd see so many women at the table. >> from the first female mayor

of winters to being the majority leader in the assembly. cecilia aguilar curry is dedicated to getting more women elected. >> the effort that we've put into this for years to make sure we bring our numbers up wasn't by accident. in the next legislative session, the assembly will have a record number of female members, and in the senate, women will represent the majority. >> and when i came on board in 2017, there were only 26 women total in the entire legislature. >> groups like close the gap, california recruit women to run with the specific goal of gender parity in the legislature by 2028. >> despite women not breaking that highest, hardest ceiling at the very top of the ticket that the new normal down ballot really is becoming diverse. women in california is exemplifying that. >> advocates say it's so much more than identity politics. >> the women who are creating this majority in the senate, and the women who are newly elected to the assembly every single one are in their spot for members of groups that have been minorities or have been marginalized. >> there's an awareness that what happens in the room, in the decision making room, when your

voice is not present is different. when you're instead there in critical mass. >> hoping the new representation will mean new approaches to issues impacting women. >> reproductive health will always be on the limelight for the women, a childcare and making sure that we can get childcare centers, making sure providers get paid a fair wage. those things are really probably the focus that we will again have for the women's caucus. i think it's really important that we listen to what our constituents said after this election, and let's not forget everybody. >> beyond women's issues, aguilar curry says the group brings diverse perspectives for solving problems. >> we got a lot of power and now the question is how do we use it? >> nationwide, nevada leads california in terms of having complete gender parity in both chambers of its houses.in both california is one of six states nationwide to have gender parity in either upper or lower chamber. in its legislature. in san francisco, monica madden, abc seven news. >> still ahead on abc seven news

at 11. an atm heist caught on camera. plus assistance that was supposed to save more of san francisco's unhoused from being left in the cold. but it's getting the cold shoulder from many of the

highly unusual heist in washington state. watch closely. the three used an excavator to rip an atm out of an enclosed casing. witnesses say they hooked a chain to the backhoe of a stolen pickup truck and just uprooted the machine from the ground. they then managed to load it into the truck and speed off. police say they arrived just a minute after getting the call and a short chase ensued, but it became too dangerous to pursue with the truck's reckless driving. police say the excavator was taken from a nearby construction site. people

gathered in san francisco to honor world aids day at the national aids memorial grove. unsung hero awards were given to two people who did important community work. one of them was vince custodio, who has dedicated his adult life to giving voice to the disadvantaged. >> you know, hiv covid those things can be treated, but it's the things like it doesn't bring back the trans person. it doesn't guarantee that people aren't going to go to bed at hungry at night. it doesn't guarantee our human rights. and so i think, well, i, i'm all for ending the epidemics. i think we need to refocus and think about what really matters. you know, it's our story and it's not over yet. >> nearby in the castro, it was the 10th annual sidewalk chalk event called inscribe. write. artwork and notes were drawn along the rainbow honor walk of castro street to honor loved ones lost on the peninsula. rescuers have released these photos of yesterday's dramatic rescuen

the south san francisco bay area. a rowing team was in the water near brisbane marina when their boat was hit by a wave. 15 of the 18 people on board ended up in the water. the coast guard, police and fire crews all helped rescue them. they were all okay. that is the good news. sfpd later recovered the boat and oars and returned them to oyster point marina. 36 years ago, then san francisco mayor art agnos asked religious organizations to step up and help with the homeless crisis. that didn't solve the problem, but it did lead to the interfaith winter shelter program, which is back in service this week. but as abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez found, not everyone wants the help. >> the homeless crisis seems even more dire during times of bad weather and the bitter cold. we ran across an warrell who sought shelter in this tent that had not yet been removed by the city.

into tomorrow, but a chilly overnight ahead so lows dipping into the 50s, even the 40s for many of you. and then by tomorrow morning it's a cool start. bay area making it to 55 to start the morning. so definitely have the sweater handy. and then temperatures tomorrow making it to the 60s. even seeing the seconds for some of you. i'll show you that in a minute. here's a look at those overnight lows though. going to be a very chilly evening for some santa rosa coming in 39 degrees. lakeport at 36. so some of you dipping into the 30s. but for the most part, we're talking about the 40s tonight, half moon bay at 46, san francisco 47. we could even see a little bit of fog developing from the north bay tonight as well. heading into tomorrow. we are still talking about above average dry conditions. so overall pretty mild start to the week. san jose morgan hill both coming in the low seconds tomorrow at 72. the rest of the area though seeing temperatures in the 60s 65 in oakland, san mateo 67 and half moon bay at 64. remember though, we are under a spare the air alert tomorrow, so air quality going to be a concern. temperatures continuing to cool for you through the end

a casino. >> not only did the forty-niners faint playoff hopes take a major blow in the buffalo snow tonight, christian mccaffrey went down with a non-contact knee injury in the first half and did not return to the game. kyle shanahan said they fear it's a season ending acl injury, an mri is scheduled for tomorrow for an official result. the 40 niners had trouble finding their footing tonight, slipping and sliding all through a snowy buffalo night under 30 degrees.

really for the entire game. the niners turn it over three times. brock purdy just 94 yards passing kyle use check. fumble. when the niners were about to punch it in for a touchdown. deebo samuel lost it on a kickoff return. and then the play of the night was this one josh allen to amari cooper who laterals it back to allen as he stood up. and the kid from firebaugh takes it and dives into the end zone, becoming the first quarterback in nfl history to throw, run and receive a touchdown in a game. niners lose 3510. it's their third loss in a row. they're five and seven with five games left to play. >> we're not as good of a team as those past teams, so that's kind of how i look at it. we're not the same team at all. every team each year is different, but i'm not going to say that this team is the same as last year's team. we're just not fighting as hard. we've got a bunch of different guys out there. we've been trying to find our way since the beginning, haven't quite found that yet. there's still a lot of season left and we expect to play better. >> football is tough, man. like
