mass transit if you are out and about. we're back to regular service after the thanksgiving holiday. and everybody, everybody is moving. well, this morning, very light traffic across the golden gate bridge, very clear with no fog. there's your highway four to san francisco drive on 80. it's looking great. and speaking of 880, past the coliseum, everybody is moving at the limi. presently, we're quiet on the roads. let's keep it that way. we hope. >> all right, sue? that's the hope. at least we'll be sure to check in back with lisa argen in just a few minutes. but. happening today, governor newsom and california lawmakers are beginning their so-called trump proofing sessions in sacramento. the governor called the special session shortly after trump won the election last month. >> at the time, he said it was to, quote, safeguard california values and fundamental rights in the face of the incoming trump administration. the governor also said the special session will focus on bolstering legal resources to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action and immigrant families during trump's first term, california filed more than 120 lawsuits.

action taken during the special session would take effect in the new year shortly before trump is sworn in. whatever the governor and the legislature come up with, they'll likely be faced with a legal fight. >> the president elect has made it clear he has no plans to allow california to serve as the resistance state during his second term. trump posted on social media, quote, governor gavin newsom is trying to kill our nation's beautiful california, adding he is using the trump. the term trump proof as a way of stopping all of the great things that can be done to make california great again. but i just overwhelmingly won the election. >> abc seven news reporter monica madden will be at the state capitol today to cover the special session. you can watch her coverage on abc seven news this afternoon. that starts at 4 p.m, and we'll have updates as they happen on our abc seven, bay area apps and abc seven news.com. >> happening today in the east bay, oakland unified leaders will meet again to figure out how to tackle the district's $95 million budgetthe deficit. the school board has

been considering a number of options. you may remember last month the idea of school closures was back on the table. a hiring freeze, eliminating positions and restructuring. some departments are also being considered. the board is scheduled to finalize cuts and begin implementing changes at its meeting next week. >> for months, president biden was adamant that he would not pardon his son hunter, who was convicted on tax evasion and gun charges. then over the weekend, he changed his mind. the announcement came just before the president left on a major overseas trip to highlight u.s. investments in africa. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero. >> reporter this morning, president biden is en route to angola after a holiday weekend spent with family on nantucket, stopping briefly in washington in between and announcing he's pardoning his son, hunter. hunter was convicted of lying on a form about his drug use whenon he purchased a gun, and in a separate case, agreed to plead guilty to tax charges. biden argues his son's charges came

about only after several of my political opponents in congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. the president's decision is a reversal from a position he held for months. >> and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? >> yes. >> the pardon goes beyond hunter's gun and tax charges, also covering offenses against the united states, which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from january 1st, 2014 through december 1st, 2024. the chairman of the house oversight committee, a republican, accuses biden of skirting accountability. democratic house representative greg stanton of arizona also criticized biden's decision, saying hunter committed felonies and was convicted by a jury of his peers. biden is not the first president to use his pardon powers before leaving office. president clinton pardoned a former business partner and his half brother, roger clinton. president trump pardoned charles kushner, his son in law's father, and just announced as trump's pick

for ambassador to france. in response to biden's decisio, trump wrote, does the pardon given by joe to hunter include the january 6th hostages? addressing a promise he campaigned off of? trump has also promised to go after those he considers political enemies, and has announced plans to fire fbi director christopher wray, replacing him with longtime ally kash patel, who has vowed to help the president elect with his plan for retribution, putting his son in the bureau of prisons within the power and control of donald trump. >> a political rival. it was probably something, as a father, he needed to do to protect his son, hunter biden, potentially faced decades in prison. >> in a statement, he said he will not take this decision for granted and will devote the life he has rebuilt in his sobriety to helping those who are sick and suffering. christiane cordero, abc news, washington. >> happening today, the court could hear closing arguments in the nearly two month long trial of the man accused of killing

san francisco tech mogul and cash app founder bob lee. the jury could get the case as early as this afternoon in the trial of nima momeni. prosecutors say he stabbed lee in the chest during some sort of confrontation in the soma neighborhood in april of last year. the men testified he acted in self-defense after lee attacked him. >> it's a story of holiday heroics and standing up for one's rights. thanksgiving morning, someone broke into first family church in antioch. the events that followed involved a scuffle, a scuffle and a pastor ready to do more than just turn the other cheek. abc seven news reporter anser hassan talked to the pastor about what happened next. >> as you can see, this window is all smashed to pieces and he had broken it open and it looked like he climbed up on these these bins, which we use for our food distribution. and he just kind of made his way through. we boarded it up. >> it wasn't the normal festive start to thanksgiving. pastor nik neves was expecting at first family church in antioch. >> he came at me through the kitchen holding a box of our materials. at that point, i told

him to stop and he didn't want to stop. so he ran and i ran after him and grabbed ahold of him. but i didn't get ahold of him until we got out to the parking lot. >> what the suspect didn't know is that pastor neves knows how to fight. he used his years of martial arts training in jiu jitsu and kickboxing to overcome the would-be robber until police came. he says they wrestledr 12 to 15 minutes. >> just using positioning and i tried to maintain back control on the gentleman so that he wasn't able to strike at me very effectively, and i tried to keep control of his hands so that if he had a weapon of some kind, i would be able to keep him from getting that weapon and use it against me. >> just after midnight on thanksgiving, pastor neves was alerted to the break in. the damage totals a few thousand dollars, which can be a lot for a small church. >> what i didn't want to see is just him run off and then come back later and rob us again. you can find that sometimes there becomes a pattern where you get victimized a lot. if you don't do anything to stand up for yourself. >> neves doesn't recommend

chasing after would be assailant, but he says he does believe in standing up for justice. >> being a loving person doesn't mean you have to be a weak person. and humility and strength are not antithesis to each other. if there's a situation where you need to stand up for yourself, i don't think you have to apologize for that. >> antioch police arrested the suspect. who neves believes is likely a homeless man. antioch pd did not return requests for comment. neves says he will cooperate in the investigation, but he also hopes for a chance to talk to the suspect. >> i hope i have an opportunity to meet him in better circumstances and maybe talk to him a little bit without the panic of him getting arrested in antioch. >> anser hassan abc seven news. >> now let's take a live look at sfo. triple a says the holiday travel rush at the airport should be calmer today, but the roads will still be very busy as people return from their thanksgiving getaways across the country. the weather has been a headache for people trying to fly home. there were thousands of delays at airports yesterday. sfo expects 6.3 million

travelers to pass through between thanksgiving day and new year's day. that's a 15% increase over last year. abc seven saw a steady stream of cars headed to the airport yesterday to drop off and pick up travelers first, family second. >> the dolphins game we went to and third, probably the sweet potato marshmallows. >> those are all three good reasons in the south bay, the crowds and lines were manageable. >> at mineta, san jose international airport. the same goes for oakland's airport, where an estimated 340,000 passengers passed through over the holiday weekend. >> i know a lot of you are getting ready to go back to work after having some time off over the holiday weekend, but the big deal today is cyber monday. deals and savings are already enticing shoppers. online retailers hoping to cash in what's expected to be a record setting day. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in milpitas at amazon's new delivery station. that's readyew just in time for the rush of online orders. good morning to

you, gloria. >> good morning to you, reggie. yeah. and we want to learn all about what this station does. so we have the station manager here with us this morning, jay garcia with amazon. so, jay, first of all, i know that you guys are preparing for a very busy day. and they started at about three something this morning. so right now they're actually on break. that's why it's not as busy as normal. but jay what goes on at this station. >> we're excited. i mean we're excited to kick off our holiday season. we've been planning for this. this is our championship for a long time. this is basically our last mile. so all the packages come from delivery station or our fulfillment center to delivery station to the customer's house. so this is the last stop before we deliver it to the customer's house. >> and i understand that from here you then deliver to certain areas here in the bay area. so where in the bay area do you deliver? >> yeah. this specific delivery station we deliver to southern zip code. so santa clara, san jose, south san jose, these are basically the zip codes that we deliver to in this delivery station here. >> and all the products basically are coming here from your fulfillment centers. and where are those located that

that they come from? >> yeah, there are about maybe 300 to 100 miles away. we have air as well that comes in here. so we have definitely some packages that come all over from north america and primarily from california from all over. >> and of course, a lot of us have already been shopping for black friday. i understand this was amazon's biggest black friday yet, so i'm curious if you saw the impact here at this delivery station with maybe more products being shipped out on black friday or being ordered to be shipped today, or this weekend? >> yeah, definitely. it's it was a record sales that we had here in black friday. obviously, this year has been amazing with prime day, big day sales in october, one of our biggest october sales, and also prime week. we definitely saw an uptick in sales, and we could tell that customers are looking for deals. so they're excited to be shopping. and we're excited to be working and delivering packages to our customers. >> and i know you also are going to have more employees for the holiday season, right? >> definitely. we have a lot of seasonal associates. a third of our seasonal associates are rehired, so it's really fun to

see familiar faces as well. >> awesome. well, thank you so much, jay. so we'll be here throughout the morning. we'll bring you some more live interviews. and later on this morning we're going to tell you some of the top deals that you can get on amazon for the holiday season. so stay with us throughout the morning. live in milpitas gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you gloria. now let's talk about some of the excitement going on in alameda because of the annual christmas tree lane that's now lit up and welcoming visitors. big crowds came out to thompson avenue on foot and by car. last night was the opening night of this holiday season. it's the 86th year that they've done this. now, for some families, this is a holiday tradition. >> i like coming with my children and then my grandchildren now, and they get so excited to see the different lights. >> all month long the lights are on every day through new year's eve from 5 to 10 p.m. >> here i am and we are waking up to some chilly conditions, but we've got a

beautiful week ahead. not feeling like december at all with temperatures well above average, it is a spare the air alert today where numbers will allow for that stagnant air pattern and not a lot of wind. 46 in palo alto, it's 52 in san francisco with upper 30s santa rosa. you see that 39 in vacaville. fog. not much of an issue this morning. seven degrees cooler in concord, and we are 16 degrees cooler, half moon bay. so everyone today warming up and we'll see a little bit of haze out there. but air quality good to moderate. and as we step outside right now looking at that partly cloudy and cool conditions for the rest of the day that spare the air alert and temperatures well above average, not only for your monday, but into tuesday, wednesday and all the way into. in fact, the end of the week and weekend. so where's the rain? the next nine days shows all of it in the pacific northwest and we are dry, so we'll have to enjoy this with a lot of sunshine.

temperatures in the mid 60s today for you downtown, 67 in oakland. look for those low 70s once again in san jose, morgan hill. we saw that in monterey, upper 60s santa rosa. so beautiful day out there. that sun setting for 51 and the accuweather seven day forecast, a string of sunny, mild above average temperatures where we'll see numbers in the low to mid 60s at the shoreline, mid and upper 60s to near 70 around the bay shore and inland mid 60s. so very little change and very dry for the week ahead. >> lisa thank you. so while we have that great weather, there's lots of snow slamming the northeast. the emergency declaration and a look at a new storm taking aim at the region this week. >> plus a season of conflict and controversy may be over for san jose state's women's volleyball team. the challenge on the court for the team at the center of a potentially landmark lawsuit and free street parking in some parts of san francisco, could come to a costly end. >> the opportunity tonight for residents to get their voices heard and let us take a live

san francisco drivers are fuming over a proposal to charge for parking in one of the city's densest residential neighborhoods. and tonight, residents will be able to voice their opinions to the city's transportation authority. the municipal transportation agency wants to convert street parking spots in parts of the marina. cow hollow and union street into metered spots. residents in the areas can apply for a residential parking permit so they can avoid paying and time limits. some business owners and neighbors we spoke with are not pleased with the proposal. >> expanding that program out into the residential blocks. i mean, i guess it produces incremental revenue for mta, but that's the only benefit. and that money comes from the pockets of people who don't have a lot of money. >> the sfmta sent us a statement saying, quote, this is intended to make it easier for residents and visitors to park, where visitor demand is very high. that's the end

of the quote there. tonight the city is hosting an open house at 5 p.m. at the moscone rec center, where residents can voice their opinions. >> with many bay area cities struggling just to pay the bills. there is a bright spn the north bay, and it's the city of napa. it says it expects to have a $4.5 million surplus going into next year. that's according to the press democrat. this is after the city brought in more revenue than expected, and the city spent less than projected. those numbers need to be audited before the city can decide how to spend the extra funds. >> a tree lighting ceremony kicked off san francisco's second entertainment zone over the weekend at thrive city at chase center. emceed the event saturday night, where we saw live music from montell jordan, known for his hit song this is how we do it, with a special appearance from warriors legend festus ezeli. >> it's really nice in this area. there's always things going on, so it's great to come here, especially for the holiday season and have something like

going on and like have all this like entertaining things,l this especially with the toddler. >> the thrive city entertainment zone is located in the area immediately surrounding the chase center during certain events. special events like the tree lighting, people can purchase alcoholic drinks from participating businesses and enjoy them in the outdoor area there. when i tell you the energy for this. it was packed. so many people were out. it was. the weather was perfect. it was. no traffic getting there. everyone was coming up. just they wanted to take pictures with montell jordan, of course, but i was like in the background. >> like how was montell? >> incredible. amazing. >> he debuted a new christmas song that he says is sure to be a classic. okay, so you'll have to you have to hear it. santa is going to be late. >> santa is going to be late. yeah. oh, okay. santa could be late. it's a bop. >> i like the little duo he had going there. oh, good morning

look. i'm elizabeth schulze, abc news, washington. >> it is down to the wire for an east bay toy drive, and they desperately need your help this holiday season. this is the 18th year for oakland chinatown's christmas in the park toy drive. volunteers partner up with the oakland chinatown chamber and other organizations to gather the toys, then distribute them to families. in years past, organizers say they would gather 2 to 300 toys by this time, but in their donation bins this year, only ten have made me feel so heartbroken. >> i was i was crying because i didn't i didn't want, i didn't know what to do. i don't want kids to you know, be be left out, be disappointed. i was willing to use my own to buy more presents for the kids and just eat, you know, instant noodles for, like, you know, for a month, you know, just so the kids can have something for the holidays. >> okay, there is time for us

but with mostly sunny conditions. it's going to be a nice day. san francisco today once again in the mid 60s. so very mild starting out in the 50s. a little cooler in oakland. those light winds mid 60s for your afternoon could be in the upper 60s and in the south bay, san jose enjoying upper 60s to near 70. we'll talk about how long this lasts in a few minutes. but first, sue is here checking the traffic. good morning. >> good morning lisa. good morning everyone. it's monday and metering lights have just been turned on at the bay bridge toll plaza. so you can see on the right hand lanes a little bit of a backup. starting there to the 880 overcrossing. otherwise, no backups here. a little bit of slow traffin the span heading into san francisco. this is the richmond-san rafael bridge whizzing right through the tolls with no delay. it's pretty good. there we go. highway four all the way to the city on your 8-80 corridor. just about 25 minutes. you can see up and adam for our early morning commuters out of tracy. the central valley is about a 55 minute drive across the

ultimate altamont pass. and please be aware of a fog advisory over the pass. so limited visibility. >> sue thank you. new developments in the presidential transition. president elect trump announcing plans to fire the current fbi director and replace him with a longtime ally. abc news reporter christiane cordero has that reaction on capitol hill following president elect trump's announcement to nominate kash patel, a longtime loyalist, as the next fbi director. >> every president has the opportunity to decide who he wants to offer a nomination for. it doesn't surprise me that he will pick people that he believes are very loyal to himself. >> patel has openly discussed using the federal government to retaliate against trump's political enemies. he's also promoted conspiracy theories of a deep state and even embraced qanon. the president elect says he plans to fire current fbi director christopher wray, who still has three years left on his ten year contract. trump nominated wray to the post in 2017. an fbi spokesperson says

wray's focus remains on the men and women of the fbi and protecting americans. following patel's announcement, former acting fbi director andrew mccabe, who's had a long running feud with trump and was fired by then attorney general jeff sessions, spoke with cnn. >> it's a terrible development for the men and women of the fbi and also for the nation. that depends on a highly functioning professional, independent federal bureau of investigation. >> patel rose to prominence as an aide to former congressman devin nunes, trying to push back against the russia investigation during trump's first term. he also took top intelligence roles and briefly served as the pentagon's chief of staff in 2020. his appointment would need to be approved by the senate. in addition to patel, trump nominated charles kushner, the father in law of his daughter ivanka, as u.s. ambassador to france during the final days of his presidency. trump pardoned kushner, who was sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering. the president

the families of the three victims who died in that crash. shawn dixon was a student and lacrosse player at usc. his family wrote shawn lit up a room made friends easily, and had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcomed and valued. krista tsukahara was a sophomore at the savannah college of art and design. her family says she will be remembered for her kind and sensitive heart, love for her family and friends, and for her incredible eye for style and design. jack nelson attended the university of colorado. his family remembered his adventurous spirit, saying he, quote, cared deeply for other people and had a strong faith. he proudly shared through the cross. he wore every day. there's still no word on the cause of the crash. the california highway patrol is investigating, the chronicle reports. the national highway traffic safety administration is also part of the investigation. >> happening today, an alameda police officer will appear in court for a preliminary hearing in the death of mario gonzalez. three years ago, eric mckinley has pleaded not

guilty to charges of involuy manslaughter for the deadlyvoluy encounter at an alameda park. gonzalez died as officers pinned him to the ground while responding to a call of a man behaving strangely. gonzalez was not armed. family members are upset. a judge dropped the case against two other officers because the da missed the deadline to file charges. >> happening today, the supreme court will hear arguments in a dispute over flavored vapes and whether their sales were illegally blocked by the fda. two companies that were denied applications to sell the flavored vapes are leading the lawsuit. they argue their products help people quit traditional cigarettes. they also argue ruling against them could destroy the vaping industry. medical groups arguing against e-cigarettes, however, say the use of them by young people is a public health crisis. >> on wednesday, one of the highest profile cases of this term will reach the supreme court. justices will hear arguments for tennessee's ban on gender affirming care to transgender patients under the age of 18. three trans teens and

packages. tell me a little bit about what you do here. yes. >> well, so when we come in for you know, for our day, we just pretty much come in to the board and they give us an assignment for the day, and then we just depend on where we're going. we go to our location and you know, that's just what we're you know, what we're going to do for the day and the store packages and make sure it gets to the customers on time and just, you know, wherever you put that's what you're doing. so. >> and you guys do an amazing job because every time i order something on amazon, it gets there right away. so obviously you all have this down and you make this very efficient. how do you get those items sorted so quickly. and ready to go out for delivery? >> well, we got good, you know, workers here and all that. but i mean usually we try to not miss any package, any package that is open or anything. we try to, you know, have, you know, certain, you know, individuals take a look at it, you know, reseal it, make sure it's not damaged or anything. so it does get on time, you know, to you know, the customers that do order the stuff. but i mean, we try to do

everything quick but safely, you know, just just so you can enjoy your product for the, you know, for that day. >> and yeah, and i know that you've been here a couple of years. how do you see it change during the holiday season compared to any other day of the year? >> well, every year is different. i mean, there's always different deals that goes on and it just seems like it's busier every year. just, you know, depending on what, you know, companies want to, you know, put deals on or you know, what the new product is and all that. so. so i mean, yeah. >> yeah. and i understand that you're expecting nearly double the products that are going to be going through here. so it's going to be very busy for all of you. we just had to ask real quick what is the biggest thing you're seeing right now that people are ordering for the holiday season? >> well, so far it's usually the electronic items, but so far a lot that we get is usually the computer screens, your tvs, you know, stuff like that. i mean, those are the big hot sellers. i'm pretty sure there's a lot of good deals on those. so that's all what we're seeing coming down the line. so a lot of electronics and a lot of us are ordering those for the holidays.

yes, the metering lights were turned on at 533. so look what's happened just in the last few minutes. filled in with a backup. now, beyond the first overcrossing, you've got about an eight minute delay from the back of the line to get through and then slightly sluggish on the upper deck into san francisco. taking a look at san jose now, this is 280 at the 880 overcrossing about an eight minute drive from downtown san jose up towards cupertino. otherwise, we are finding ourselves pretty light this morning with our usual commute out of the central valley and fog over the altamont pass. >> sir. thank you. this morning. extreme cold is hitting a big portion of the country just as millions travel home for the holiday weekend.

several days. and with a few high clouds and light winds, we are setting up for a pattern that is really not like december 44th in vallejo. right now. it is 37, in santa rosa with upper 30s by the delta eight mile visibility. so that's not an issue this morning. we've had a lot of fog over the weekend, 52 in san francisco, looking at where we stand so far since october 1st. san francisco over 4.5in of rain, 127% of normal santa rosa. you can see over 15in with 294% of average and just over an inch in san jose, 1.65. in oakland. so only 55% of average in napa doing well. so yeah, we had our rain. we could have used more in the east bay, but we are in a dry stretch now. if we look at the second half of the workweek, mid 60s, along the coast, we still have the upper 60s along the bay shore. and those low 70s popping up around the south bay. thursday, maybe a few more clouds. so we'll probably bring down the temperatures a bit, and then

struggling as much with housing costs as other places. that's according to new data from the census bureau that looked at rent costs and incomes last year. it found 48% of renters in the san francisco metropolitan area, burdened by the cost of rent. that means spending close to a third of income on housing and utilities, while rent costs are definitely still high here. we also have higher incomes, and that means our area doesn't even crack the ten least affordable regions in the u.s. >> new developments more wolves are now roaming the golden state. according to the california department of fish and wildlife, there is now an estimated 70 wolves in california. that's an increase from the 44 documented last year. wildlife officials spotted two new wolf packs roaming near lake tahoe. that brings it to a total of nine packs across the

state, up from one pack four years ago. 30 more pups were also born this year, meaning more packs are expected to form. and this week, there's a push in sacramento to get raiders legend and san jose native jim plunkett into the pro football hall of fame. south bay state senator dave cortese plans to introduce a resolution today, urging the selection committee to make plunkett part of next year's hall of fame class. plunkett is now 76. he graduated from stanford and won a heisman after leading the team to a rose bowl victory in 1970. he's also led the raiders to two super bowl victories. of course, a lot more news is coming up at 6:00, including breaking news of a major shakeup this morning at one of silicon valley's most iconic companies. >> also special sessions in sacramento. governor newsom joining state lawmakers to discuss protecting policies before trump's second term. >> heading home after the holiday. sfo expecting a big increase in travelers this last month of the year and cutting off cabin service.
