of those on your screen. >> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez was at tonight's school board meeting and spoke with parents. >> i want to ask you to not close middle school because they have a lot of good teachers, students and parents in san jose are faced with an unsettled future. >> on monday, families packed the alum rock union school district board meeting after months of different proposals, the board of trustees made their final decision to close six schools and consolidate three. >> i'm upset because as a parent, i want the best for my kids and that's why i went to a school of choice for more than two hours. >> parents, teachers and community members tried to advocate against the decisions to close or combine schools in comparison to other schools, as well. >> we have some of the highest numbers of low income students foster care and english learners. >> these students need support by the end of the night. the board voted unanimously, trustee min pham said no proposal was perfect. >> this is a moment of great, you know, and since great anguish and great sadness and you know, i stated for very

clearly, it's a school board member's nightmare. >> the district is faced with a $20 million budget deficit. the district created a community committee with parents like lisa tuthill to weigh in on how they can budget 10 million savings for the 2024 school year and the following school year, they looked at our proposal and said, oh, well, you didn't meet the $10 million which their proposal didn't either. >> i'm not just an angry parent. i have looked at this very strategically, along with a lot of the other parents and it doesn't make sense. and it's very clear that it's very political. >> it takes sixth grader juliana escobar two minutes to walk from home to her middle school renaissance at fisher that is now set to close the nearest middle school is ocala, a 15 minute drive away. >> it would be new for me because i would also, i don't know how i would get there walking the bus, driving members of the mayfair community made of working class and immigrant families, will now have one

elementary school because the district has already closed schools there. >> it's not fair that we keep getting the hit, you know, all the time, and you ask yourself why? why our community? why? may 1st, that hits all the time. >> this could go into effect next school year in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> in a statement tonight, the superintendent of the alum rock school district blamed the budget deficit on a decline in student enrollment and the expiration of temporary covid relief funds. now, he said, the board of trustees had received information on multiple proposals and only reached tonight's decision after months of input and discussions, he wrote. the closures were a difficult decision but added quote, i see an opportunity to reimagine alum rock as a district that's leaner and more focused on student success. now, there are also budget issues for oakland schools. district leaders met today to talk about how to tackle a $95 million budget deficit. next week, the oakland unified board will finalize cuts. the board is considering a number of options,

including school closures, a hiring freeze, eliminating positions, as well as restructuring on the peninsula san mateo county sheriff continues to put up a fight, making a new move to try to keep her badge. >> sheriff christina corpus sent a letter today to county supervisors saying she is opposed to a charter amendment that would ask voters to give the board the power to remove an elected sheriff from office. supervisors could pass that measure tomorrow. it follows a report that says corpus abused her power and had an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, and sent racist and homophobic text messages. corpus denies the allegations and has refused calls to step down. all right, here's a live look outside. on this second night of december, we'll continue to see some mild and warm temperatures throughout the week, which is very nice. >> yes, but is it going to stay dry? abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with our forecast. sandhya. >> yeah, dan and ama is definitely going to be dry, at least for the foreseeable future. after this week, things could be a little bit different.

let me show you a live picture right now from our mount tam cam and visibility is fantastic as we look back toward san francisco, it's going to be different going into tomorrow morning. now, we do have a spare the air alert for tonight. the next couple of days we're looking at moderate air quality. part of the reason is we have this offshore wind flow, very light, high pressure overhead, putting a lid on our atmosphere and our air quality is suffering as a result. many areas are yellow, which is moderate air quality right now. taking a look at your day planner tomorrow morning, patchy fog 30s, 40s. the sun's out at noontime. it's another mild to warm afternoon with plenty of sun, 60s and 70s and then partly cloudy later on in the evening. i'll be back with an extended outlook that does include that 6 to 10 day outlook for temperatures and rain coming right up dan. >> all right, sandhya, thanks very much. new developments in the fatal stabbing near the embarcadero bart station last month. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins will not bring charges against the accused killer. jenkins says

that while police had probable cause in making the arrest, her office cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect did not act in self-defense. >> the young victims of a fatal car accident are being remembered in the east bay tonight. students at piedmont high school wore black and purple ribbons for a gathering and a moment of silence. three 2023 graduates died in the crash while home from college on thanksgiving break. another one is expected to survive but faces a long recovery. >> the principal just said a few words, just acknowledging the tragedy and then led us all in a moment of silence. which was it was really powerful. the feeling is very heavy in the community right now. >> police and traffic safety officials have launched an investigation. the tesla cybertruck. the students were in veered off the road into a tree and a cement wall as it just went up in flames. there have been a handful of recalls and similar investigations into

cybertruck crashes. >> california is positioning itself for legal fights against the trump administration in an effort to uphold state policies. state attorney general rob bonta. governor gavin newsom and state lawmakers met today to look at ways to protect california. they say bonta announced two bills he says will safeguard access to reproductive care in the state. >> doj is proudly sponsoring these bills because the basic fundamental right to abortion is being threatened throughout the country and unfortunately, even right here within the state of california. >> one bill would ensure that non-surgical abortion remains an accessible option. a second would allow the state to enforce the reproductive privacy act. bonta says during trump's first term, the state filed more than 100 lawsuits and won most of them. >> a dedication to a newer legacy, the san francisco federal building, is now officially called the speaker nancy pelosi federal building.

congressional leaders passed the mayors and the building architect attended today's celebration. the 18 storey tower in soma now stands as a tribute to the woman who has represented the city for 37 years in congress. >> for me to have a building named. speaker nancy pelosi saying to the people of san francisco, your representative was the speaker of the house, the first woman, first californian speaker of the house, really fills me with great emotion. i'm very proud of that. >> last year, many building workers worked from home as much as possible because of safety and crime concerns in the area. some say the area is dramatically cleaned up while others say illegal activity simply moved blocks away. >> another budget blow to the city of oakland tonight. according to the east bay times, the real estate firm seeking to buy the training facility used by the oakland roots and soul soccer teams backed out of that deal. this happened last month. the raiders used the facility until they moved to las vegas. the firm prognosis issued a

statement saying it determined that the deal wasn't going to work out. the report says the city expected to receive $12 million from the sale of that 16 acre property, a symbol of san francisco, will keep rolling despite a budget shortfall. >> we're talking about the cable cars. that word today from mayor elect daniel lurie. he posted on social media that some things are untouchable and the cable cars are here to stay. lurie says they are part of san francisco's economic recovery. earlier this year, we reported the san francisco municipal transit authority was considering suspending some cable car lines because of a looming muni budget deficit. >> well, thanksgiving has come and gone. hope you had a great weekend, but the late date for the holiday has some shoppers and small business owners feeling the christmas crunch. believe it or not, christmas is barely three weeks away and there are fewer shopping days between thanksgiving and christmas than in most years, so we don't have much time. online retailers are taking advantage. they reported a record breaking haul for people shopping online. shoppers are expected to spend

the driver who went off a cliff after colliding with another ca. look at this. they helped her to a harbor patrol boat and she was then flown to a hospital. her current condition isn't known. the santa cruz fire department praised those people, saying their quick response helped save that woman. they really did a heroic. yes they did. >> well, we're following the trial in the killing of cash app founder bob lee very closely, and a 911 call for help was a focus today as closing arguments in the trial began. niuma mohamed is accused of stabbing lee to death in san francisco. this was in april of 2023. prosecutors say the motive was that lee introduced his sister to a drug dealer who she testified, drugged and sexually assaulted her. the attorneys said that he hid evidence of the stabbing by throwing the knife over a fence. lee's brother was among the family members in court today. >> i think dave did a great job

of summing up this case and really putting it in perspective and really drawing in what the facts are of this case. >> well, his attorneys claim lee was on a drug bender that made him agitated and violent and that he first attacked moore, many with a knife. the defense will make their closing arguments tomorrow. >> since walgreens announced plans to shutter more than a thousand unprofitable locations, we now know two east oakland locations are on that chopping block. according to oakland side stores located at 3434 high street and 5809 foothill boulevard are set to close. each will shutter near the end of january. five other oakland stores will remain open, including one on foothill boulevard. walgreens cites costs of rent, staffing and supply. >> santa clara county's version of care court is now up and running. the program first unveiled by governor newsom in 2022, connects people with severe mental health challenges with housing treatment and support services. the individuals must be referred to

the program by family members, first responders, mental health service providers, among others. care courts are already up and running in eight counties, including san francisco, all counties must have this program in place this month. >> well, the latest twist in the goose truce along the peninsula. today, foster city council members voted on ideas about what to do about those pesky birds. >> as abc seven news reporter joe stone explains, the city will not kill those geese after all. >> canada geese were the topic at hand at this foster city city council meeting monday night. >> they're dangerous to our pets. they're dangerous to our kids. and at this point, it feels like it's gotten completely out of hand. >> foster city vice mayor stacy jimenez didn't hold back after listening to a presentation given by a wildlife consulting firm regarding a non-lethal canada goose management plan to deal with the geese and the

droppings they leave. >> i would recommend that you move towards habitat modification as fast as possible. >> that is the process of changing the look of these park areas. so the geese don't feel comfortable here. experts here say an example of that would be to cover the fences that surround beaches like this. so the geese can't see the water from the park area. >> you need to take away both the land and the water as a safe space, so that they don't just go from the land to the water. and then when you leave, they come back to the land. you want the whole area to be unsafe. >> the process of hazing is also likely to be used. loud noises, drones or dogs to scare the geese elsewhere. while some, like the non-lethal ideas. >> i really appreciate that you guys are letting the geese live. >> others are upset that the plan to kill 100 geese two years ago never happened, due to complaints about it. >> it seems to me the most prudent thing to do for the people of foster city is to kill most of the geese.

>> the city council adopted the management plan monday night and will begin testing methods. those from the city say they will meet again in two months. at that time, they will vote on a full scale plan and the funding needed for it. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> new at 11. the national park service announced it will remove a controversial fence that kept hundreds of tule elk confined to the tip of point reyes national seashore. the fence had been up since 1978. animal rights activists supported removing the fence to allow the elk to roam more freely. ranchers wanted to keep the fence to prevent the elk from competing with their cattle for food. removal of a two mile section of the fence could begin as early as next week. >> in sacramento, the capitol christmas tree has arrived. let's take a look at it. the tree came from latour demonstration state forest in shasta county. it's now on the west lawn of the capitol. looks

want to show you what the climate prediction center is saying over the next 6 to 10 days. it starts this sunday, december 8th through the 12th. here is how it's looking nationwide near normal temperatures back east. above average from the central u.s. all the way out west for the bay area. there's a 40 to 60% chance of above average temperatures here. unfortunately, in terms of rainfall, we're on the lower end. everybody else above average back east, near normal in the central u.s. and here in the bay area, 45 to 50% chance during the same time period that we're going to have below average rainfall. part of the reason is we have this blocking high pressure, and that's really preventing the rain from getting here. the storm track is aimed well to our north. don't get me wrong, the weather was nice today. but you know when you have day after day of dry weather, we start to get concerned. live doppler seven showing you some high clouds up to our north. as we look at
