>> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez was at tonight's school board meeting and spoke with parents. >> i want to ask you to not close middle school because they have a lot of good teachers, students and parents in san jose are faced with an unsettled future. >> on monday, families packed the alum rock union school district board meeting after months of different proposals, the board of trustees made their final decision to close six schools and consolidate three. >> i'm upset because as a parent, i want the best for my kids and that's why i went to a school of choice for more than two hours. >> parents, teachers and community members tried to advocate against the decisions to close or combine schools in comparison to other schools, as well. >> we have some of the highest numbers of low income students foster care and english learners. >> these students need support by the end of the night. the board voted unanimously, trustee min pham said no proposal was perfect. >> this is a moment of great, you know, and since great anguish and great sadness and you know, i stated for very clearly, it's a school board

schools there. >> it's not fair that we keep getting the hit, you know, all the time, and you ask yourself why? why our community? why? may 1st, that hits all the time. >> this could go into effect next school year in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> in a statement tonight, the superintendent of the alum rock school district blamed the budget deficit on a decline in student enrollment and the expiration of temporary covid relief funds. now, he said, the board of trustees had received information on multiple proposals and only reached tonight's decision after months of input and discussions, he wrote. the closures were a difficult decision but added quote, i see an opportunity to reimagine alum rock as a district that's leaner and more focused on student success. now, there are also budget issues for oakland schools. district leaders met today to talk about how to tackle a $95 million budget deficit. next week, the oakland unified board will finalize cuts. the board is considering a number of options, including school closures, a hiring freeze, eliminating

stabbing by throwing the knife over a fence. lee's brother was among the family members in court today. >> i think dave did a great job of summing up this case and really putting it in perspective and really drawing in what the facts are of this case. >> well, his attorneys claim lee was on a drug bender that made him agitated and violent and that he first attacked moore, many with a knife. the defense will make their closing arguments tomorrow. >> since walgreens announced plans to shutter more than a thousand unprofitable locations, we now know two east oakland locations are on that chopping block. according to oakland side stores located at 3434 high street and 5809 foothill boulevard are set to close. each will shutter near the end of january. five other oakland stores will remain open, including one on foothill boulevard. walgreens cites costs of rent, staffing and supply. >> santa clara county's version of care court is now up and running. the program first unveiled by governor newsom in

2022, connects people with severe mental health challenges with housing treatment and support services. the individuals must be referred to the program by family members, first responders, mental health service providers, among others. care courts are already up and running in eight counties, including san francisco, all counties must have this program in place this month. >> well, the latest twist in the goose truce along the peninsula. today, foster city council members voted on ideas about what to do about those pesky birds. >> as abc seven news reporter joe stone explains, the city will not kill those geese after all. >> canada geese were the topic at hand at this foster city city council meeting monday night. >> they're dangerous to our pets. they're dangerous to our kids. and at this point, it feels like it's gotten completely out of hand. >> foster city vice mayor stacy jimenez didn't hold back after listening to a presentation

given by a wildlife consulting firm regarding a non-lethal canada goose management plan to deal with the geese and the droppings they leave. >> i would recommend that you move towards habitat modification as fast as possible. >> that is the process of changing the look of these park areas. so the geese don't feel comfortable here. experts here say an example of that would be to cover the fences that surround beaches like this. so the geese can't see the water from the park area. >> you need to take away both the land and the water as a safe space, so that they don't just go from the land to the water. and then when you leave, they come back to the land. you want the whole area to be unsafe. >> the process of hazing is also likely to be used. loud noises, drones or dogs to scare the geese elsewhere. while some, like the non-lethal ideas. >> i really appreciate that you guys are letting the geese live. >> others are upset that the plan to kill 100 geese two years ago never happened, due to

complaints about it. >> it seems to me the most prudent thing to do for the people of foster city is to kill most of the geese. >> the city council adopted the management plan monday night and will begin testing methods. those from the city say they will meet again in two months. at that time, they will vote on a full scale plan and the funding needed for it. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> new at 11. the national park service announced it will remove a controversial fence that kept hundreds of tule elk confined to the tip of point reyes national seashore. the fence had been up since 1978. animal rights activists supported removing the fence to allow the elk to roam more freely. ranchers wanted to keep the fence to prevent the elk from competing with their cattle for food. removal of a two mile section of the fence could begin as early as next week. >> in sacramento, the capitol christmas tree has arrived.
