this early in the morning. reggie. >> thanks, gloria. it's a similar story that we've seen throughout the bay area. lots of families upset this morning after a school district decides to close or merge a bunch of schools. this is happening this time in the south bay at alum rock. you can see the impact to campuses on your screen. the vote last night was unanimous. despite a vocal group of community members who demanded other options to close a big budget gap. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us. this morning with the reaction to this. >> lena reggie aqui, after months of different proposals, the board of trustees made their final decision to close a total of six of those impacted schools and consolidate three. we were there as parents, teachers and community members tried to advocate against the decisions to close or combine schools for more than two hours. at last night's school board meeting. this comes as the district is faced with a $20 million budget deficit. the alum rock union school district created a community committee with parents like lisa tuthill to weigh in on

how they can budget $10 million in savings for the 2024 school year and the following school year. >> they looked at our proposal and said, oh, well, you didn't meet the $10 million, which their proposal didn't either. i'm not just an angry parent. i have looked at this very strategically, along with a lot of the other parents, and it doesn't make sense. and it's very clear that it's very political. >> and this isn't the first time the district has made the difficult decision to close schools. members of the mayfair community made of working class and immigrant families, will now have just one elementary school because the district has already closed schools there. these changes could go into effect as early as next school year. live in studio lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks, lena in the east bay, there are also budget issues for oakland schools. district leaders met yesterday to talk about how to tackle a $95 million budget deficit. next

week, the oakland unified board will finalize cuts. the board is considering a number of options, including school closures, a hiring freeze, eliminating positions and restructuring. >> today, defense attorneys will give their closing arguments in the trial over the killing of cash app founder bob lee. nemo mckinney is accused of stabbing lead to death in san francisco in april of last year. prosecutors say he stabbed lee after his sister claimed she'd been drugged and sexually assaulted by a drug dealer she met while with lee. they say mckinney then tried to hide the knife by throwing it over a fence. lee's brother was in court yesterday during the prosecution's closing arguments. >> i think dave did a great job of summing up this case and really putting it in perspective and really drawing in what the facts are of this case. >> mckinney has claimed the stabbing was self-defense, and that lee is the one who came at him with a knife. he faces 26 years to life if convicted of murder. new developments in the deadly stabbing near the

embarcadero bart station last month. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says she will not bring charges against the accused killer. jenkins said that while police had probable cause in making the arrest, her office cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect did not act in self-defense. >> federal investigators are now looking into the deadly crash that killed three college students from piedmont. shawn dixon, christa tsukahara and jack nelson died when the truck they were riding in crashed and caught fire the day before thanksgiving. a fourth person who was injured in the crash is in the hospital. all were 2023 grads of piedmont high school. they were home for the thanksgiving holiday when the crash happened early wednesday morning. those young victims are being remembered in the east ba. students at piedmont high school wore black and purple ribbons for a gathering and a moment of silence yesterday. >> the principal just said a few words, just acknowledging the tragedy, and then led us all in a moment of silence, which was it was really powerful. the

feeling is very heavy in the community right now. >> officials have not said what caused the crash. the students were driving in a tesla cybertruck. it veered off the road and crashed into a cement wall and tree and caught fire. there have been a handful of similar incidents and investigations into cybertruck crashes. >> a dedication to a newer legacy. the san francisco federal building is now officially called the speaker nancy pelosi federal building. we told you about this yesterday morning. congressional leaders past mayors and the building architect attended the celebration yesterday. the 18 story tower in soma now stands as tribute to the woman who has represented the city for 37 years in congress. >> for me to have a building named. speaker nancy pelosi saying to the people of san francisco, your representative was the speaker of the house, the first woman, first californian speaker of the house really fills me with great emotion. i'm very proud of that.

in theaters now. raw milk here in california. state officials have now suspended the distribution of raw milk, bottled by a company called raw farm. bird flu was detected in samples of the milk, but so far there have been no reports of anyone getting sick. raw farm sells to more than 450 locations across the state. consumers have been warned not to drink the raw milk. >> this morning there's a new

twist in a goose story on the peninsula. we've been following the situation in foster city for several years now. i'm never going to get over this graphic. the city has been trying to get rid of a big population of canada geese that have overrun some parks. and gloria. now there's a plan to get these geese to leave. >> there is the plan approved by the city council last night involves making the geese so uncomfortable that they decide to leave on their own. experts are calling it habitat modification, and they say it should happen as soon as possible. the process could change the look of park areas in nearby lagoons, for example, the city could cover fences that surround beaches so the geese can't see the water from the park area. >> you need to take away both the land and the water as a safe space, so that they don't just go from the land to the water, and then when you leave, they come back to the land. you want the whole area to be unsafe. >> the city may also use loud noises, drones, or even dogs to scare the geese away. while many

support these ideas, some would like the city to kill the geese. that idea was on the table two years ago, but it never happened because a lot of people complained about it. so what happens next? will. the city will begin testing methods to get the geese to leave, and then the council will meet again in two months to vote on a full-scale plan and the funding that is needed for it. amanda. >> all right, gloria, thank you. the national park service announced it will remove a controversial fence that kept hundreds of tule k confined to the tip of point reyes national seashore. the fence has been up since 1978. animal rights advocates supported removing the fence to allow the elk to roam more freely. ranchers wanted to keep the fence to prevent the elk from competing with their cattle for food. removal of a two mile section of the fence could begin as early as next week. >> thanksgiving is over. now, many people are focused on getting ready for christmas, and this year we have fewer days than usual to get all that shopping done. and small businesses are now feeling the christmas crunch. online retailers are taking advantage of this. they reported a record

breaking haul for shopping during cyber monday. so here's a look at the numbers. adobe analytics estimates that people spend as much as $13.5 billion yesterday, marking the biggest online shopping day of all time. that's in addition to $10.8 billion spent on black friday, 40 billion may have been spent during cyber wee, which is the five day period between thanksgiving and yesterday in san francisco. leaders are encouraging people to take some of that money offline and into our local shops. >> i think we really haven'. we still haven't completely recovered from covid. i think all of our neighborhos are feeling, you know, the sort of the loss of tourism dollars a lot of folks are spending more time outside the city. >> according to business owners, the past black friday weekend treated them well. >> i'm hearing great news from other merchants that had really good weekends when their normally a little sleepy for them after thanksgiving. >> if you haven't started your holiday shopping yet, you have

our east bay hills camera, it is clear out there, but it is chilly to begin with. you need a couple of layers out there. first thing sunrise here at 709 this morning, but later on this afternoon you can take off a couple of those layers because 4 p.m. that sunshine feels nice. temperatures are warm, low 60s along the coast. upper 60s, lower 70s around the bay, shoreline and inland. your sunset, by the way, coming at 451. this evening. so today, expect a lot of sunshine after a chilly start. 65 in napa, but 67 in palo alto. we'll have light winds out there, generally less than about ten miles per hour. 65 in the city, 70 in santa rosa will hit about 64 for a high in antioch. overnight tonight, we'll keep mainly clear skies. a few high clouds around the bay shoreline, but that's about it. and very typical with our overnight lows in the 30s and in the 40s. now the big picture shows you that this warm weather is going to encompass a big portion of the u.s. not only this week, but for much of next week. and in fact, it's california that will likely see some of the warmest temperatures as we head

>> we're learning more about the injury to 40 niners. star running back christian mccaffrey on sunday versus the buffalo bills. the 28 year old suffered a pcl injury in his right knee and will go on the injured reserve list. the injury likely will not require surgery, but the stanford alum will miss at least six weeks, ending his season with sunday's loss to the bills in buffalo. the 40 niners playoff hopes have dwindled down to below 10%. >> happening today, the pro football hall of fame will announce the finalists for the senior category of enshrinement. fans here in the bay area hope that san jose native jim plunkett is on that list. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has a look back at plunkett's legendary career. >> when deciding who is enshrined into the pro football hall of fame. one question stands above the rest for voters. can you tell the story of the nfl without this player? and if you ask fans in the bay area, there is no way to do that without mentioning a local

legend not yet enshrined. east san jose native, stanford grad and san francisco 49 ers and oakland raiders quarterback jim plunkett, an idol on the campus of his ama mater, james lick high school. >> for us to be able to have people such as jim plunkett come out of our school, it's only an inspiration for us athletes that played here, that continue to play here and say that i too can make it somewhere. >> plunkett accomplished nearly everything you could during his football career against all odds, he was born to blind parents and had to work several jobs to support his family. but still at james lick, he won a championship at stanford. he took home the heisman trophy and became the first hispanic player to be drafted number one overall, and after a rough start in the nfl, he won two titles with the raiders. all that remains is the hall of fame. california state senator dave cortez has been a fan of plunkett since watching him win the 1971 rose bowl. cortez is introducing a senate resolution, a hail mary of sorts, to the selection committee to right the longtime wrong and vote plunkett in few if any quarterbacks that win two

super bowls are left out of the hall of fame in fact, right now, jim plunkett is e only one who has won two super bowls that's left out of the hall of fame, and we think that needs to be corrected. >> we think the nfl should recognize the fact that he was a big part in building up the league itself. >> plunkett was the first nonwhite qb to win a super bowl, changing the game and inspiring fans of hispanic and native american heritage. forever sports writer mark purdy says he's a key piece of nfl history. >> he's already in the college football hall of fame, he's already in the san jose sports hall of fame. he's he's in a number of other halls of fame. but i happen to believe that jim belongs in the hall of fame for both his football accomplishments and for what he meant to the nfl. >> the final inductees of the 2025 hall of fame will be announced in february at the super bowl in east san jose. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> the golden state valkyries have released the schedule for their inaugural season. the new

next step to try and remove her from office. gloria, the sheriff continues to fight to stop this effort. >> she does. yesterday, san mateo county sheriff christina corbett sent a letter to county supervisors saying that she opposes a charter amendment that would ask voters to give the board power to remove an elected sheriff from office. the board is set to vote on that charter amendment today. if passed, it would be placed on the ballot in march. and this is all happening because of a bombshell report that was released last month. it accused corpus of abuse of power and inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, who she recently promoted, and of sending racist and homophobic text messages. corpus told abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes last month that a lot of the accusations in the report are, quote, made up garbage, and she's refused multiple calls to step down. you can see dan's exclusive interview right now at abc seven news.com. amanda. >> all right. gloria, thank you. a 72 year old man is believed to have gone overb. the ruby princess cruise ship

before it docked in san francisco. according to princess cruises, they searched the ship several times and reviewed closed circuit television footage before coming to that conclusion yesterday. the coast guard also conducted two searches of the ocean yesterday but did not find anything. the man was traveling alone. u.s. customs and border protection is now investigating this disappearance, and search delayed the ship's departure for a 16 day cruise to hawaii. in santa cruz, two bystanders sprung into action to save a driver who went off a cliff. take a look. there. now. police are investigating whether that driver went off the cliff intentionally. >> original. there was an accident between two vehicles and immediately following the accident, the driver of the nissan that went over the cliff put the car in reverse and then accelerated off and drove off the cliff intentionally so bystanders helped her to a harbor patrol boat, and she was then flown to a hospital. >> her current condition is not known. the santa cruz fire

five. a deal between san francisco city leaders and the nonprofit urban alchemy should keep the organization from shutting down. urban alchemy focuses on cleaning up the streets of san francisco and aiding the city's homelessness crisis. this deal would add almost $8 million to the organization's current budget. if the deal falls through urban alchemy would likely have to cut hundreds of employees. some city leaders worry about how the deal would impact the city's current budget deficit. >> we now know the walgreens stores in east oakland slated to soon shut down, according to

oakland side stores located at 3434 high street and 5809 foothill boulevard are set to close. five other oakland stores will remain open. this includes another on foothill boulevard. the company is closing more than 1000 locations they claim are unprofitable. >> another budget blow to the city of oakland. according to the east bay t, the real estate firm seeking to buy the training facility used by the oakland roots and soul soccer teams backed out of the deal last month. the raiders used the facility until they moved to las vegas. the firm, prognosis issued a statement saying it determined the deal wasn't going to work out. the report says the city expected to receive $12 million from the sale of that 16 acre property, and construction hasn't even started yet. >> but the estimated cost of the a's proposed stadium in vegas has gone way up. according to the las vegas review-journal, the price tag now stands at $1.75 billion. that's a quarter of a billion dollars more than
