11:01 pm
setback, the band will continue its tour, including a show in the city this weekend. as abc seven news reporter tim johns explains, the band says the show must go on. >> get down, get down. video shows the moments british band sports team was robbed in vallejo tuesday morning. the band, which has had two top ten albums in the uk, had flown to america just hours before to begin a tour. there and rest of the room. i spoke with the band's singer and drummer via zoom. they tell me earlier in the day they had stopped in a local starbucks on route to their first show in sacramento when the robbery occurred, and some guy came in sort of seconds later telling us that a white sprinter van was being broken into. >> so instinctively, we all ran out and started shouting. >> after running up to confront them, the band tells me the man robbing the van then brandished a gun. >> we retreated to go back inside and were just forced to watch and carry out, like all of our personal items from the van. >> the robbers took most of their personal belongings, including laptops and their
11:02 pm
passports. however, they weren't able to get any of the instruments. the group says while the incident was intense, the most shocking part was the reaction from other people after it happened. they tell me they were struck by the impression folks gave off, that things like this happen all the time in the uk are incredibly shocked. >> like when you if someone's pulled a gun on you. but then from the us, there definitely is this kind of resigned nature from a lot of people, which we find a little bit strange. >> despite the incident, the band tells me it hasn't tainted their view of the bay area. a region they've been to several times and love. they also say the support from fans has been comforting. >> i think we've been so overwhelmed by the response we've had from our fans, from people like within the bay area and sort of like, you know, people reaching out to say that they have family members in sacramento and can they help. and, you know, you definitely don't feel alone in this situation. >> the band eventually made it to sacramento and played the first show as scheduled tuesday night, determined not to let the experience ruin their newly launched tour. >> i've been able to play shows,
11:03 pm
connect with people, use music as a way of like, you know, sort of like getting through experiences like that. there's kind of nothing more special. >> we did reach out to the vallejo police department to see if they could comment on the robbery or ensuing investigation. as of now, we have not heard back. i'm in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. >> well, thank goodness they're okay. we wish them a great and safe rest of the tour. well, another beautiful day across the bay area. temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above average. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. it's nice. sandy. >> it is indeed, dan. but not december. like as you know. let me show you a live picture right now from our emeryville camera. absolutely gorgeous view right now as we look back towards san francisco, looking at the planner tomorrow morning. patchy fog, 30s, 40s, hazy sunshine in the afternoon. hours and above average once again with 60s and 70s as we head into the evening, temperatures will come down. there will be a few clouds around. numbers will be in the 50s, so some of the city high

11:05 pm
findings. it highlights capacity, care and shelter protocols, it noted. in the summer, there were nearly 700 animals on site, while shelter capacity was roughly 500. the average length of stay for animals has increased. there are 39 recommendations for improvements or changes. director of public works matt loesch responded to the report 21 of the recommendations they're considering as high priority. >> and so it's not like we're doing this in a place of calm. we're doing this in a place of crisis with the animals, and so we're trying to get to a place. what is there additional resources that would help make that happen? we need to evaluate that quickly. >> loesch pointed to a photo that was taken by a volunteer in september that circulated online. it shows a dog in poor conditions. >> these are the challenges that we meet every day, not just our staff, our volunteers. and these are the reasons why we begged to the community and the rescues to come help us. >> shelter staff brought the dog to the meeting to explain the shelter does cause some stress, but he is doing well and ready
11:06 pm
for adoption during public comment. that display did not sit well with current volunteers. >> you decided to bring a dog here to show that he's well and taken care of. if that's the case, i don't know if any of you saw him shaking. that was stress. >> the nonprofit companion animal protection society shot this footage at the shelter on september 24th for an upcoming documentary, the crisis at california's animal shelters. rebecca davis matthews worked at the shelter for almost four years. >> i've experienced it myself when i've gone there to drop off donations and seen how it is. >> the city council will receive their first biannual update from the auditor in march. shelter officials will provide their own update in may. in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> new developments tonight in the ongoing story of the embattled san mateo county sheriff, whose future will now be put in the hands of voters. it will cost about $4 million to ask voters if county leaders should be allowed to fire an

11:10 pm
climbing mountains his entire life. he's a tour guide with swiss mountain guides who provided us with these pictures. now, he was not on a guided tour here. he grew up in venezuela, but has studied at uc berkeley and worked at the lawrence livermore national lab for many years. as to what happened, it's unclear. keck and two others were supposed to leave on monday morning after climbing to the summit of mount cook, but they never showed several climbing related items believed to belong to the three men were found monday during the limited time that authorities were able to search by helicopter. a nearby avalanche school posted on facebook that authorities told them, quote, the climbers appear to have taken a fatal fall from high upon the peak. end quote. authorities, though not confirming that i talked with mountain climber caleb burns, who knows? keck well. >> hearing the news? definitely.

the investigation. when you hear that. what do you think? >> john doesn't tell me anything. i just need some specifics from the police. are you doing this? are you doing this? and if the answer is yes, then i'll shut up. i'll keep my mouth shut. i don't need to keep pressuring them. but if they don't tell me what they're doing, then i've got to assume the worst. >> for more on john ramsey's conversation and the latest on the investigation into jonbenet's death, you can catch the full report on nightline. it's on in about an hour at 1235 right here on abc seven, after jimmy kimmel live! stay tuned for that. but stay here with us, because coming up, not even two years after it opened, san francisco needs millions to repair leaks at the subway station in chinatown. then the fallout in south korea after the president declares martial law and then is quickly rebuked by his own government. and helping dreams come true on this giving tuesday, i'll take you inside. friends of camp concord, giving kids an experience they'll never forget. all of that's coming up.

where opposition parties submitted a motion to impeach the president, urging him to resign. this morning, the country's leader declared martial law, which prompted troops to encircle parliament. he said was in response to what he called anti-state forces. well, hours later, lawmakers voted to lift that decree and
11:16 pm
the president obliged. in south korea, it's legal for the president to declare martial law during times of unrest or war. well, not even two years after the nearly $2 billion rose park subway station opened, it needs repairs today. sf mta approved a multi-million dollar plan to fix the leaks. these are new photos of some of the damage to pipes and other leaks. the repair project will take nine months, and the station will close early next year. for up to 17 days to deal with this. these funds were in reserve, so it will not add to the agency's budget problems. the subway finally opened in january of last year, four years behind schedule, and now the leaks. the debate over the great highway has now sparked an effort to recall san francisco supervisor joel engardio. this morning, san francisco residents angered over engardio support for proposition k, which will permanently close the great highway to cars, filed a petition which seeks to remove
11:17 pm
him from office. recall organizers allege that engardio broke his promises to voters and failed to represent his constituents. their words saying the closure will cause traffic chaos in their neighborhoods. they will have to gather thousands of signatures for the recall to go to voters. engardio released a statement today saying, i respect the views of voters who opposed prop k. many have told me they didn't feel heard in their objection to it being on the ballot. i take this feedback to heart on this giving tuesday. we're highlighting local organizations that are near and dear to us, and can always use a helping hand to make a difference in our communities. and tonight, a terrific organization i've been deeply involved with for decades that gives underserved kids the chance to enjoy the great outdoors at south lake tahoe. it's friends of camp concord. check it out.
11:18 pm
beautiful south lake tahoe is a magical place. camp concord, where kids can come and enjoy an experience that can last a lifetime. every child should have the chance to go to summer camp at least once in their lives. that's why i've been a board member and supported friends of camp concord for nearly three decades. we send children to camp, all expenses paid, more than 12,000 so far. >> friends of camp concord's mission to send underserved kids to camp really aligns with the cares afterschool program, because initially they were solely funded for schools that were free and reduced lunch. >> friends of camp concord is now working with the cares after school program in the mount diablo unified school district to get kids to camp. >> friends love to partner with programs like that because that is their mission is to try to get people access to camp and to nature. >> as you can see, the kids who friends of camp concord sends to tahoe are having an absolute blast. but it's not just the
11:19 pm
campers. the counselors are having fun too. >> the environment here, starting from a staffing to the kids, is just very welcoming. always very warm, and we're treated more like a family here. >> it really is just about the activities that they're doing and, you know, the arts and crafts and the games and the songs and the skits and all of that is designed to let them just be silly and have fun and sort of be themselves. the camp is always kind of one of the places where people can just be themselves and really come out of their shell. >> we've done two hikes. we went to the beach, we got to go kayaking, and we made bracelets. all day. >> how much fun are they having now? if you'd like to help friends of camp concord or any of the great organizations that we've profiled on abc seven news today, we have all the information on our website. it's important to do it today, too,

as many nonprofits are doing matching pledges on this giving tuesday. so let's take advantage of that. just head to abc seven news.com slash. take action. we've been so proud to focus on so many worthy, wonderful organizations in the bay area today. all right. let's turn to the weather forecast where it feels a little more like spring. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. sandhya, it is just lovely. and we've got a little more of it coming. >> we do indeed. so soak up the sun, dan, and enjoy. let me show you where we were just a couple of weeks ago, november 20th, through the 26th. we had flooding rain here in san francisco the entire month of november. we're looking at close to five inches of rain during that time period. that's when most of it fell. november 27th through tomorrow. we're going to continue with the theme of sunny and mild and the rainfall. we're not expecting any. as a matter of fact, today it was a dry, sunny day, record high at oakland, 70 degrees. it was unseasonably mild by a good 5 to
11:21 pm
10 degrees. 71 in san jose, 67 in santa rosa, 69 san rafael. upper 60s sfo, concord, 65, in san francisco. pier 39. camera. just a beautiful view as we try to look towards the golden gate bridge. there. visibility is dropping right now. two miles in novato, three miles in santa rosa. because of the fog. we also have some fog forming out towards fairfield down to five miles. so watch out tomorrow morning the setup is bringing the fog. we have high pressure overhead downsloping winds. you know that fog from the central valley tends to bring it into the fairfield area, but the same setup is responsible for trapping the pollutants down near the surface as you have sinking air underneath an area of high pressure. it's pretty obvious when you see those oranges. that's poor for sensitive groups. we even have some reds in the central valley, which is unhealthy air here in the bay area, we are looking at some of those poor for sensitive groups in orange, moderate for many other areas. the winds are light under that area of high
11:22 pm
pressure, and that's another reason why those pollutants are trapped. so here's a look at the air quality moderate the next two days. if you have any respiratory issues keep that in mind. 40s and 50s on those temperatures right now a lovely view from sutro tower. overnight areas of fog tomorrow through friday. mild above average again and the start to the weekend will be cooler and cloudier but pleasant. sunday will be sunnier so we go hour by hour tomorrow morning. most of you will start out in the 40s as we head towards the noontime hour, 50s and 60s. and then really for the early afternoon. most of you will be in the 60s and 70s. so another nice looking day. temperatures down to the 30s when we bottom out in the coldest locations to the 40s. patchy fog will be dense in spots tomorrow afternoon. low 60s to the low 70s. once again. now, looking at the next ten days, i don't see any rain here in the bay area. maybe a little drizzle at some point, but the pacific northwest is going to be measuring rain and inches the rain eventually. next week gets down into northern california.
