now. good morning. in the 30s. 37 fairfield, 39, in danville and livermore. 40s for the most part around the bay shoreline. so if you like yesterday, you'll love today. it's equally as nice. so the coastline will find sunny skies today. temperatures starting out in the 40s, getting into the 50s by 10 a.m, and then we'll bounce into the low 60s by the afternoon around the bay shoreline. another mild afternoon could see a few record highs again, upper 60s to the lower 70s with full sunshine and our inland communities looking lovely. sunny skies and temperatures, mainly in the 60s. let's check in with gloria. see those drive times? >> drew. good morning. so, o far it is pretty quiet here on the bay area roads this morning. you can see mostly green. we do have that red area in the altamont pass where it usually is a little slow anyway. but we do have a minor incident that we want to tell you about in san jose. this is over on northbound 87 before curtner avenue. there's a driver that's been reported driving the wrong direction, going southbound and northbound lanes. it's causing a delay to capital expressway crews. are there. so just keep that in mind that speeds are

down to about eight miles per hour at this time. reggie. >> gloria. thank you. in the east bay, oakland residents are expecting to get some clarity today about who will lead their city when mayor xiang tao steps down. she was recalled last month and will leave office likely in just a couple of weeks. abc seven news reporter lena howland here in the studio with a look at next steps. >> reggie. good morning. current city council president nikki fortunato bass is expected to lead a press conference this morning. in a release from her office. we're told bass willer discuss the next steps and clarify who will act as mayor going forward, according to a legal opinion published by oakland city attorney barbara parker recalled, mayor xiang tao will have to step down after the alameda county registrars registrar of voters certifies the election results by tomorrow and after council declares a vacancy in the mayor's office on december 17th. so far, it's been unclear who will be acting mayor because bass is also moving on after being elected to the county board of supervisors. after the vacancy is declared,

the city has 120 days to hold a special election. the city attorney says that's likely to happen by april 15th of next year. on january 6th, city council will meet to elect a new council president. that person will serve as interim mayor until the swearing in of the winner of that special election. now, at the same time, council will also have to appoint someone to fill the district two seat. which boss is opening up before a special election can be held for that seat? the goal is to avoid paying for two separate special elections, and have both held on the same day in april. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. and we're following the story of embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus, who will now face a special election. it will cost about $4 million to ask voters if county leaders should be allowed to fire a sheriff. county supervisors have agreed to place a charter amendment on the ballot during a special election in march. if it passes,

supervisors would be able to remove corpus from her job. it's in response to findings of a report into internal claims that corpus abused her power. >> i want people to understand that these are not decisions that we have come to lightly and we have to do what's right fornd this community, even when it's hard. >> corpus denies any wrongdoing. the board set a december 11th deadline to withdraw their request for the special election. if there is a change of heart. sheriff corpus spoke directly with abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes about her fight to stay in office. her chief of staff also spoke with dan. you can see those exclusive interviews on our website. abc seven news.com slash i-team. >> in the south bay, six former apple employees have been accused of stealing thousands of dollars meant for charity. thens office says they did it by doing something called a donation match scheme. so here's how officials describe it. employees would make a donation to two

nonprofits. apple would match that donation. then someone at the nonprofit would refund the donation to the employees, and they would keep the money. apple matched. the suspects are charged with multiple felonies, including grand theft, perjury and tax fraud. >> it's ripping off apple. it's ripping off the charities. it's ripping off the government. so it's really a situation where everybody loses apple loses, the community loses. and all because these six individuals wanted to make some money. >> the suspects are accused of stealing $152,000 in false donations. and over reporting around $100,000 in charitable contributions as tax deductions. we've reached out to the nonprofits and apple we have not heard back. the six men face more than five years in jail and restitution payments if convicted. jury selection is underway for one of of kidnaping a santa cruz county tech exec in 2019. surveillance video showed the suspects walking near the

pleasure point home of tushar autry. investigators say the four men broke into his home looking to rob him. two of the suspects are forr employees. then they took autry from his home and shot him near a property where he farmed cannabis products. >> this morning, an east bay hiker is missing in the mountains of new zealand. gloria. he's one of three men who attempted to climb the tallest mountain in that country. >> he is amanda carlos romero. romero has been climbing his entire life. he's from livermore, and you can see video of him right here. he's one of those three climbers who tried to get to the top of a rocky mount cook. according to new zealand geographic, at least 230 people have died or disappeared in mount cook national park, and from those nearly 80 climbed while trying to 8-80 died while trying to climb that mountain. a local avalanche school posted on facebook that new zealand authorities told them, quote, the climbers appear to have taken a fatal fall from high upon the peak. that information has not been confirmed by officials. abc seven reporter

we will need to continue to ensure that people access the critical and vital county services that they need. >> yesterday, the board discussed support, resources for immigrants and how to make those more of a priority. the board also discussed putting together an extensive report about protections for county residents before inauguration day. that includes immigration rights, outreach and workplaces, and options to expand programs defending against deportations. the board is also looking at ways to prepare for increased incidents of religious, racial and gender bigotry. >> developing news on president elect donald trump's transition. abc news has learned trump is considering replacing his pick for defense secretary pete hegseth. this comes after a number of senators privately signaled they won't vote for hegseth, due to allegations of his mistreatment of women. trump is reportedly coming up with a list of replacements, which includes iowa senator joni ernst and florida governor ron desantis.

>> today, the u.s. supreme court will hear oral arguments in one of the most high profile cases of the session. the case challenges a tennessee law that bans hormone therapy and puberty blockers for transgender minors in the state. some legal experts are worried the court's conservative justices are not focusing on the constitutional specifics. >> i think it will be a signal of where the supreme court is joining a partizan, and non-neutral war against transgender persons. >> lawyers for the biden administration argue the law is unconstitutional sex discrimination. the state's lawyers plan to argue they are justified, citing scientific evidence they claim is contradictory and uncertainty about long term effects of the treatments. today will mark the first time an openly trans attorney will argue a case before the supreme court. >> 5-10 in the accuweather forecast. we're looking at another fantastic day. we have

our dry, warm, sunny pattern continuing for much of this week. a live look from our san jose camera this morning. all is quiet here, but it is brisk out there. this morning. once again, 47 degrees is the current temperature in san jose with clear skies. some of our sheltered valleys in the east bay, the north bay starting out with temperatures in the 30s this morning. bit of fog in the russian river valley this morning. here's live doppler seven. switched over to visibility mode around santa rosa. we have some thick fog this morning. down to about a half of a mile there. elsewhere, we're doing just fine. but watch this area very closely. that fog will likely ebb and flow over the next 2 to 3 hours. so looking at the forecast today again, sunshine, warm temperatures, a high of 64 in the city today we'll go to 67. in oakland 71. it will be a warm afternoon in the south bay once again. and we'll keep that mild sunshine going in walnut creek coming in at 66 degrees. so here's a look at future weather. we have sunny skies later on this morning. that sun is up here

city leaders and community members are responding to a new audit that found animals are suffering at the city run animal shelter. council members called for the audit last year and yesterday they looked at the findings, it noted. in the summer there were nearly 700 animals on site while the shelter capacity is just 500. the average length of stay for animals was increased, and there are 39 recommendations for improvements or changes. >> and so it's not like we're doing this in a place of calm. we're doing this in a place of crisis with the animals. and so we're trying to get to a place. what is there additional resources that would help make that happen? we need to evaluate that quickly. >> they've known about this issue for at least two years for these issues. and it's a hole that's getting deeper and deeper. and now they're having to dig their way out of the hol. >> san jose city council will

receive its first bi annual update from the auditor in marc. shelter officials are going to provide the council with their own update in may. >> the ongoing debate over the great highway has now sparked an effort to recall san francisco supervisor joel engardio. a new petition to remove engardio from office stems from his support for proposition k, which will permanently close the great highway to cars. recall organizers allege that engardio quote broke his promises to voters and failed to represent his constituents, saying the closure will cause traffic chaos in their neighborhoods. they will have to gather thousands of signatures to recall for the recall to go to voters. engardio released a statement saying, i respect the views of voters who opposed prop k. many have told me they didn't feel heard in their objection to it being on the ballot. i take this feedback to heart. >> it's only two years old, and the nearly $2 billion new subway extension in san francisco is already experiencing some needed repairs. just yesterday, sfmta approved a multi-million dollar

plan to fix leaks at the rose park station. these are new photos of some of the damage to pipes and other leaks. sfmta voted to approve the repairs, which will cost $6.5 million. the project will take nine months. the station will have to close early next year for up to 17 days. these funds were in reserve, so it won't actually affect the agency's budget problems. the subway finally opened in january of last year, four years behind schedule. >> free fridays on the ferry between richmond and san francisco appear to be helping boost ridership to nearly 90% of pre-pandemic levels, according to the chronicle. ridership nearly doubled during five free november fridays compared to last year. nearly 2000 richmond san francisco riders on average rode the ferry for free on those days. the trip will remain free on fridays through the end of the year. the bay area is about to get two new movie theaters. alamo drafthouse cinema has confirmed it's moving into the village at san antonio

of the milk, triggering two voluntary recalls. so far, there have been no reports of anyone getting sick. raw farm sells to over 450 locations across the state. consumers have been warned not to drink the raw milk. the state health department says pasteurized milk is safe. >> this morning, you might be hearing about a big egg recall coming from costco. none of those eggs were sold in california. according to the fda, the eggs could be contaminated with salmonella. they were sold at 25 costco stores in alabama, georgia, north carolina, south carolina and tennessee starting the weekend before thanksgiving. no illnesses have been reported, but if you have family or friends in any of those states, they can get a refund if they bought those eggs. the e coli outbreak that was linked to mcdonald's quarter pounders has been declared officially over, according to the cdc. the outbreak came from the slivered onions used in the burgers. in total, 104 people were sick or

right there, and then it will open up for you. looking live at our golden gate bridge camera this morning, it is nice and clear there as well. we have no fog advisory this morning. traffic is flowing nicely on both sides of the golden gate bridge, so that's some good news at the live desk this morning. i'm tracking the situation in south korea overnight. the country's opposition party moved to impeach president yoon suk yeol. a vote is expected by the end of the week and this comes after this short lived emergency martial law that was enacted yesterday by president yoon when he accused the opposition politicians of sympathizing with north korea. it only lasted for about six hours. the biden administration says it was caught totally off guard by south korea's political turmoil. tension escalated socal quickly that the u.s. embassy issued a warning to americans overseas. the biden administration says it is relieved that president yoon reversed course. >> our hope is and every hope and expectation is that any political disputes will be

resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law. >> and within hours after the opposition party moved to impeach president yoon, a number of his top cabinet members have submitted their resignations. the nation's largest union group is now calling for him to step down and if the president does get impeached, a new election would need to be held within 60 days. amanda. >> all right. gloria, thank you. and that news in south korea sent shockwaves. thousands of miles away and was felt right back here at home. local korean americans say their family overseas ae upset and worried about force from the army. and police. art choi with the korean community center in the east bay, says he's also concerned. >> president yoon it seems like he's an unpopular president at the time right now because his ratings are going down, and i think he needed to do something where you know, kind of like a shock factor. and he just kind of wanted to seize power. he's from a very conservative party, so he's encouraging others to check on family or friends if

clarification about who will lead the city until a new mayor can be elected. abc7 news reporter lena howland is live in studio this morning. and lena, it's not necessarily a clear cut decision. >> amanda. that's right. and according to a legal opinion published by oakland city attorney barbara parker recalled mayor shang tao will have to step down after city council approves the election results at their december 17th meeting. city charter requires a special election 120 days after that meeting, which the city attorney says is likely to happen by april 15th of next year. up until this point, it's been unclear who will be acting mayor because boss is also moving on after being elected to the county board of supervisors. here are the scenarios. boss has the option to leave office in january when she is sworn in as supervisor, which would allow her to serve both as interim mayor and council president up until that point, or she has the option to resign before then in order for the special races of

both her and tao seats to appear on the same ballot for a special election. if she waits until january to resign, that could force two special elections. according to our media partners at the bay area news group, a number of people have interest in running for tao seat as mayor. that includes newly reelected council member carol fife, former council member ignacio de la fuente, longtime lobbyist isaac kos-read, former council member lauren taylor, and former tao staffer renee webb, current city council president nikki fortunato bass is expected to lead a press conference this morning discussing the next steps in this process. that'sxt happening at 10:00 live in studio. lena howland, abc seven news. >> and we have a traffic alert for you this morning. we want to let you know. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights have just flipped on. they flipped on at 533 this morning, and you can see a live look here at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's not too busy, just yet, but of course we know that is going to change

pretty soon. there are no delays at the tolls, but the 880 ramp is already starting to back up from highway four to san francisco. it will take you 42 minutes right now, reggie. >> all right. thanks so much, gloria. today, a street safety ambassador program in san francisco could learn. if it's going to receive the crucial funding it needs to keep running. the city's budget committee is expected to consider a proposed $7.8 million addition to the $16 million annual contract for urban alchemy. this could be a tough decision because san francisco's currently facing an $800 million budget deficit. urban alchemy ambassadors say they've already received an email confirming hundreds of people are on the verge of losing their jobs. >> we've got 300 people with 300 families that are now depending on this contract to feed their families. >> urban alchemy has been credited with helping increase safety in the tenderloin mid-market and soma neighborhoods. there are still some questions about its effectiveness. the contract with the city is set to expire at the end of june.
