wednesday, december 4th is going to be very nice afternoon. you're going to find warm weather once again. clear skies this morning. a live look outside from the exploratorium camera. plenty of stars out there. current sky conditions, no matter where you are. right now. you can see plenty of stars out there. and that's going to lead to another sunny afternoon on the way. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. not a whole lot going on across california that leads to those sunny skies today, and temperatures still above average could see 1 or 2 record highs like we saw yesterday, but with clear skies this morning, it certainly is feeling brisk out there, 30s and 40s right now for the most part. so you do need those layers. but just like yesterday, you can take a few of them off later on this afternoon. the coast looking lovely. lots of sunshine. we'll head into the low 60s, close to the ocean around the bay. shoreline warmer than that 60s if not near 70 degrees later on today with those sunny skies and then inland forecast equally as bright. temperatures above average will head into the 60s

by about three 4:00 pm. let's check in on the commute with gloria. good morning. >> good morning drew. >> good morning everyone at home. so traffic is definitely starting to build at this hour. seeing a lot more cars out there on the roads you can see live. look at our emeryville camera and all those headlights heading towards the bay bridge. but really no delays. there it is moving even though it is a little slower than usual. highway four, san francisco 48 minutes. and looking at our bay bridge toll plaza camera, that's also gotten really packed in just about the last half hour or so. metering lights did flip on at 533 this morning, and traffic is starting to back up to west grand avenue, but it is an easy ride across the span into the city and looking at your drive times. tracy to dublin 54 minutes dublin to mission boulevard, south, 16 minutes 101 to cupertino. also 16 minutes. amanda. >> all right, gloria, thank you. and the east bay oakland residents are expecting to get some clarity today about who will lead their city when mayor xiang tao steps down. she was recalled last month and will leave office likely in just a couple of weeks. abc seven news

reporter lena howland is here in studio with a look at the next steps. lena. >> amanda. current council president nikki fortunato bass is expected to lead a press conference this morning and a release from her office. we're told bass will discuss the next steps and will clarify who will act as mayor. going forward. according to a legal opinion published by oakland, city attorney barbara parker recalled mayor shengtao will have to step down after city council approves the election results on december 17th. city charter requires a special election 120 days after that meeting, which the city attorney says is likely to happen by april 15th of next year. but up until this point, it's been unclear who will be acting mayor because bass is also moving on after being elected to the county board of supervisors. so here are the scenarios. bass has the option to leave office in january when she is sworn in as supervisor, which would allow her to serve both as interim mayor and council president up until that

point. or she has the option to resign before then in order for the special races of both her and tao seats to appear on the same ballot for a special election. if she waits until january to resign, that could force two separate special elections. live in studio lena howland abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. this morning, an east bay hiker is missing in the mountains of new zealand. gloria. he's one of three men who attempted to climb the tallest mountain in that country. >> he is reggie aqui carlos romero is from livermore and has been climbing his entire life. and he's one of those three climbers who tried to get to the top of mount cook. according to new zealand geographic, at least 230 people have died or disappeared in mount cook national park and from those nearly 80 died while trying to climb the mountain. and a local avalanche school posted on facebook that new zealand authorities told them, quote, the climbers appear to have taken a fatal fall from high upon the peak. that information, though, has not been confirmed by officials. abc seven reporter

j.r stone talked with mountain climber caleb burns, who knows romero well. >> hearing the news? definitely. i'm still processing. he's, you know, run trips in japan, run trips over in europe, south america, all over the world. he's a very experienced climber and very experienced, guide the world, but really like the guiding community, has really lost someone special. >> several climbing related items believed to belong to the men were found earlier this week. however, crews have not been able to search for the men for about two days because of bad weather conditions and they hope to renew their search today. guys. >> all right, gloria, thank you and we are following the story of embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus, who will now face a special election. it will cost about $4 million to ask voters if county leaders should be allowed to fire a sheriff. county

supervisors have agreed to place a charter amendment on the ballot during a special election in march. if it passes, supervisors would be able to remove corpus from her job. this is all in response to findings of a report into internal claims that corpus abused her power. >> i want people to understand that these are not decisions that we have come to lightly, and we have to do what's right for this community, even when it's hard. >> corpus, however, denies any wrongdoing. the board set a december 11th deadline to withdraw their request for the special election if there is a change of heart. sheriff corpus spoke directly with abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes about her fight to stay in office. her chief of staff also spoke with dan. you can see those exclusive interviews on our website, abc seven news.com slash i-team. >> in the south bay, six former apple employees have been accused of stealing thousands of dollars meant for charity. the santa clara district attorney's

office says they did it by doing something called a donation match scheme. so here's how officials say it works. apple employees would make donations to two nonprofits, and apple would match it. then a person who worked for two nonprofits would refund the donations to the apple employees instead of refunding apple's donation, the employee of the nonprofits would keep apple's money for himself. the suspects are charged with multiple felonies, including grand theft, perjury, and tax fraud. >> it's ripping off apple. it's ripping off the charities. it's ripping off the government. so it's really a situation where everybody loses. apple loses the community loses. and all because these six individuals wanted to make some money. >> the suspects are accused of stealing $152,000 in false donations, and over reporting around $100,000 in charitable contributions as tax deductions. we've reached out to the nonprofits and apple we have not heard back. the six men face more than five years in jail and

restitution payments if convicted. santa clara county is following the state's lead and taking action ahead of a second trump presidency. >> our community is over 40% foreign born. we have incredible strength in our diversity, and we will need to continue to ensure that people access the critical and vital county services that they need. >> yesterday, the board discussed support, resources for immigrants and how to make those more of a priority. the board also discussed putting together an extensive report about protections for county residents before the inauguration that includes immigration rights, outreach and workplaces, and options to expand programs defending against deportations. the board is also looking at ways to prepare for increased incidents of religious, racial, and gender bigotry. >> developing news on president elect donald trump's transition. abc news has learned trump is considering replacing his pick for defense secretary pete hegseth. this comes after a

number of senators privately signaled they won't vote for hegseth due to allegations of his mistreatment of women. trump is reportedly coming up with a list of replacements, which includes iowa senator joni ernst and florida governor ron desantis. >> today, the u.s. supreme court will hear oral arguments in one of the most high profile cases of the session. the case challenges a tennessee law banning hormone therapy and puberty blockers for transgender minors in the state. some legal experts are worried the court's conservative justices won't look at the constitutional specifics. >> i think it will be a signal of where the supreme court is joining a partizan, and non-neutral war against transgender persons. >> lawyers for the biden administration argue the law is unconstitutional sex discrimination. the state's lawyers plan to argue they're justified, citing scientific evidence they claim is contradictory, and the uncertainty about long term

effects of the treatments. today will mark the first time an openly trans attorney will argue a case before the supreme court. >> 610 in the accuweather forecast on this wednesday, we're looking at your planner where it is chilly this morning feels brisk under clear skies, 30s and 40s. the name of the game through about 8 a.m. by 910. we're into the 50s and we're already warming into the 60s. close to that noon hour, so feels nice again later on this afternoon. this morning we do have one area of some thick fog around santa rosa and the russian river valley. that is where we have visibility still down to about a half of a mile here, and that fog will linger through about the seven. 8 a.m. hour before that sunshine warms us up, burns off that fog. so just anticipate some low visibility around santa rosa for the next two hours or so. forecast. today a lot of sunshine. it feels warm just like yesterday. 60s and 70s could have a couple of record highs once again, so future weather will warm you up at 930 into the 50s. and look at noon. if you can grab lunch outside,

leaders and community members are responding to a new audit. finding animals are suffering in the city run animal shelter. council members called for the audit last year, and yesterday they reviewed the findings and noted in the summer there were nearly 700 animals there. the shelter capacity is only 500. the average length of stay for animals increased and there are 39 recommendations for improvements or changes. >> and so it's not like we're doing this in a place of calm. we're doing this in a place of crisis with the animals. and so we're trying to get to a place. what is there additional resources that would help make

that happen? we need to evaluate that quickly. >> they've known about this issue for at least two years for these issues. and it's a hole that's getting deeper and deeper. and now they're having to dig their way out of the hol. >> san jose city council will receive its first bi annual update from the auditor in march. shelter officials will provide the council with their own update in may. the ongoing debate over the great highway has now sparked an effort to recall san francisco supervisor joel engardio. a new petition to remove engardio from office stems from his support of proposition k, which is going to permanently close the great highway to cars. recall organizers allege that engardio, quote, broke his promises to voters and failed to represent his constituents, saying the closure will cause traffic chaos in their neighborhoods. they'll have to gather thousands of signatures for the recall to actually go to voters. engardio released a statement that says, quote, i respect the views of voters who oppose prop k. many have told me they didn't feel heard in their objection to it being on the ballot. i take this feedback to heart. >> not even two years after the

rose pack subway station opened, it is now needing repairs. just yesterday, sfmta approved a multi-million dollar plan to fix leaks. there are new photos of some of the damage to pipes and other leaks, as well as the mta voted to approve the repairs, which will cost $6.5 million. the project will take nine months and the station will close early next year for up to 17 days. these funds were in reserve, so it won't add to the agency's budget problems. the subway finally opened in january of last year, four years behind schedule. free fridays on the ferry between richmond and san francisco appear to be helping boost ridership to nearly 90% of pre-pandemic levels, according to the chronicle. ridership nearly doubled during five free november fridays compared to last year. nearly 2000 richmond and san francisco riders on average rode the ferry for free on those days. the trip will remain free on fridays through the end of the year.

bay. shoreline warmer will be in the 60s i think. a few spots close in on 70 degrees later on today, which would mean a couple of record highs are possible. and then inland, looking equally as warm and sunny temperatures into the 60s by 4 p.m. let's check in with gloria, see how the commute. >> good morning. we do want to tell you about some delays on mass transit. bart is reporting some delays. so passengers who are traveling between the coliseum and the oakland airport on the oakland airport line can expect up to 18 minute delays because of an equipment problem on the track. ac transit is offering bus service between the coliseum and oakland international airport. you can take bus 73 for that, and we're looking live at our richmond bridge camera. traffic is slow moving right now on westbound 580 from richmond parkway to the mid-span, but it is still moving, so that's good. and looking live at our walnut creek camera, it's a little bit slow. also there on southbound 680 from hillside avenue to highway 24, and there is a little bit of a delay on southbound 242 as you

approach southbound 680, but there are no major delays in concord as you head out to oakland. and now we're going to move on to the live desk. i'm tracking the situation in south korea. overnight, the country's opposition party moved to impeach president yoon suk yeol. a vote is expected by the end of the week, and this comes after that short lived emergency martial law enacted yesterday by president yoon when he accused the opposition politicians of sympathizing with north korea. it only lasted for about six hours. the biden administration says it was caught totally off guard by south korea's political turmoil. tension escalated so quickly that the u.s. embassy issued a warning to americans overseas. the biden administration says it's relieved that president yoon reversed course. >> our hope is and every hope and expectation is that any political disputes will be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law. >> within hours after the opposition party moved to impeach president yoon, a number

of his top cabinet members have submitted their resignations. the nation's largest union group is now on strike, calling for him to step down. now, if the president does get impeached, a new election would need to be held within 60 days. reggie. >> gloria. thank you. the news in south korea sent shock waves thousands of miles away and was felt back here at home. local korean americans say their families overseas. they're upset. they're worried about forces from the army and police. art choi with the korean community center in the east bay, says she's concerned president yoon. >> it seems like he's an unpopular president at the time right now, because his ratings are going down, and i think he needed to do something where, you know, kind of like a shock factor. and he just kind of wanted to seize power. he's from a very conservative party. >> he's encouraging others to check on friends or family if they're in south korea, to see what's actually happening on the ground. >> a palestinian teenager

injured in a bombing in gaza is now safe in the bay area this morning, 19 year old farrah arrived at san francisco international airport yesterday. she will be receiving medical care in the u.s. after losing her eye and one leg during an israeli bombing. through a translator, farrah shared what she is looking for to. >> and she wants to start a new life. fresh life. there's so many things she didn't have over there that she would like to get here, hopefully, and just start fresh and there's everything. basically, she wants everything she can over there, there, ther. >> and we know farrah is working with humanitarian nonprofit. the group is called heal palestine, which is currently helping children injured in gaza to find treatment. >> tomorrow, alameda county election officials are expected to certify the results of oakland's mayoral election, confirming mayor xiang tao is out. today, we're set to get some clarification about who's going to lead the city until a

balance the budget quickly. a bond rating affects the interest rate on money a city borrows to fund projects. the city council is expected to announce where budget cuts will be made next week. >> this morning we're getting a better look at how much of an impact last month's atmospheric river made in sonoma county. officials estimate the storm caused more than $2.6 million worth of damage. yesterday, the board of supervisors passed an emergency proclamation allowing officials to apply for state and federal funds to help cover the cost. the record breaking storm dumped more than 20in of rain in some parts of sonoma county. >> today, a street safety ambassador program in san francisco could learn if it's going to receive the crucial funding it needs to keep running the city's budget committee is expected to consider a proposed $7.8 million addition to the $16 million annual contract for urban alchemy, and this could be a tough decision, as san francisco faces an $800 million budget deficit. urban alchemy

news out of new york city. the ceo of unitedhealthcare, brian thompson, has been shot and killed in midtown manhattan. police confirmed to abc news they believe the shooting was targeted this morning. they don't have a motive, right now. thompson was in new york city for an investor's conference. no one has been arrested. unitedhealthcare is one of the world's largest health care companies. so far, they have not commented on the situation. but again, the news this morning that the ceo of unitedhealthcare has been shot and killed in new york. >> we'll be sure to bring you any updates here. the british band sports team will play in san francisco as scheduled on saturday. despite being robbed at gunpoint in vallejo. this is
