lot to get into there. >> robin: we will. >> george: also the latest on liam payne. a friend who was with him before his fatal fall is responding to the investigation. battle over donald trump's pick for defense secretary. pete hegseth saying he's not going to back down addressing many of the concerns of republicans. there are many concerns out there. >> robin: we're going to begin with the urgent man hunt of suspect who gunned down united healthcare ceo brian thompson outside a new york city hotel. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is at the hotel with the latest on the investigation. good morning to you, aaron. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. 24 hours after this assassination style killing, the killer is at large but he left behind a trail of clues here at the scene that may lead police to him and to a possible motive, suggesting anger with the insurance industry. this morning a frantic man hunt for the man authorities spotted on this surveillance video shooting and killing brian thompson, the ceo of united healthcare. police say it was no accident. >> every indication is that this

was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack. >> reporter: the gun appears to have a silencer and jammed when the shooter cleared it police say he fired again. >> from watching the video, it does seem he's proficient in the use of firearms. he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly. >> all units be advised in regards to a confirmed male shot in the confines of midtown north. >> reporter: police say it was around 6:45 a.m. when the suspect, pictured at starbucks before the shooting, gunned down thompson as he was walking alone into the hilton for an investors conference. in a video overnight the shooter seen here about 20 minute before the shooting. >> looking for a male 5' 10" in height, cream colored jacket, black mask, black gloves. >> reporter: this eyewitness snapping a picture of the suspect as he fled. >> i was shocked. i feared that he could shoot me, too. >> reporter: by the time police arrived the suspect hopped a bicycle to get away. detectives now working to determine whether he had prepositioned that bike close by.

new video overnight showing the suspect pedalling his bike on the upper west side. officers found the 50-year-old insurance executive and father of two collapsed on the sidewalk. did he have any enemies? anyone you have been able to find? >> we're reaching out to law enforcement in minnesota and interviewing his co-workers to see if there's been threats against him in the past. >> to have a pillar of the community in new york, admittedly for a stockholder meeting, be gunned down in the street is just so foreign. >> reporter: even as the leader of a large corporation, thompson did not have a security team with him. investigators found shell casings with writing on them including the words deny, defend and depose. they also say they found a cell phone, granola bar wrappers and water bottle they believe are linked to the shooter. this brazen assassination style killing coming at the height of the holiday season while new york is packed with tourists for the nearby lighting of the rockefeller christmas tree. the nypd increased patrols and securities in the subways.

>> day to day in new york is really scary. i think everyone here is doing their part to make sure we have a safe event here. >> reporter: a family is now grieving this loss. thompson's wife paulette telling abc news, we are shattered to hear about the senseless killing of our beloved brian. brian was a loving generous talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives. police have not identified the suspect but are building a profile of a man with a grudge, possibly against united healthcare or the insurance industry in general. robin? >> robin: aaron, what about the writings on those bullet casings? what does that tell police? >> reporter: that could be another clue toward motive. to take the time to write on the shell casings indicates not only premeditation, but also a deeply personal type killing, and those words, deny, depose, defend. those are words often associated with the insurance industry. robin? >> robin: all right. thanks to you, aaron.

>> george: we're going to get the latest on the fast moving winter storm bringing whiteout conditions, more snow to areas already hit hard. trevor ault is in watertown, new york. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. we still have millions of people under wind and snow alerts across 18 different states. where we are, we're once again under a winter storm warning. we have all this left behind from the first weather system. some areas are expecting another foot or two as this moves in. what makes the second system particularly dangerous are all these strong gusts of wind. up to 50 miles an hour in some spots. we've been watching the near whiteout conditions essentially across the plain, midwest. we've seen a few other deadly scenes on the road. this morning i-90 south of buffalo, we are seeing a traffic incident. we know people need to be careful especially since this system moves in in western new york, northern new york, where we are. the evening commute could be treacherous.

[ laughter ] we're going to switch gears and turn to the shooting at a religious school in northern california. a gun man opened fire critically injuring two young students before killing himself. melissa adan is on the ground in california. good morning, melissa. >> reporter: george, this morning, two boys in kindergarten are hospitalized suffering from gun shot wounds when a shooter opened fire right outside their classroom. a northern california community searching for answers this morning after a gun man opened fire at an elementary school in buke county. >> shots fired. >> reporter: officials say two male students, 5 and 6, were shot and wounded. >> those two children were transported to local hospitals. they are currently in extremely critical condition. >> reporter: the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gun shot. investigators working into the night collecting evidence. authorities say earlier this day the shooter had met with the

principal at the school to discuss enrolling a student. several minutes later, screams and shots were heard. the small christian school, about an hour north of sacramento, put on lockdown, the children taken to a nearby church to reunite with their families. >> tears, pandemonium. it's collective, collective trauma. >> reporter: the fbi and local police are now investigating the motive behind the shooting, including a belief that the suspect targeted this school due to its affiliation to the seventh day adventist church. robin? >> robin: thanks to you. now the battle over donald trump's defense secretary nominee who is vowing to fight for the job and is addressing concerns about his alleged misconduct. our chief white house correspondent mary bruce is in washington with more. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. pete hegseth is defiant and digging in, saying he is going to keep fighting, even as we know donald trump is keeping his options open.

this morning donald trump's embattled pick for secretary of defense, former fox news host pete hegseth says he's not going anywhere. >> so you're in this all the way? >> why would i back down? i've always been a fighter. >> reporter: while sources tell us trump is considering other options, hegseth is doing a full court press, media interviews and on capitol hill, defending himself against allegations of sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement, allegations he now calls the art of the smear. >> am i a perfect man? no. was i a perfect man? absolutely not. >> reporter: hegseth denies a rape accusation, claiming he paid a settlement to a woman who accused him of sexual assault to protect his job and marriage. he insists he doesn't have a problem with alcohol, even promising not to drink a drop if he gets the position. >> he offered up to me, and i know to other senator, that he's not drinking.

that's something he's not going to do if confirmed here. >> reporter: but first he needs to convince a growing number of skeptical republicans like senator ernst, who could be up for the job if trump moves on. hegseth, who said women should not fight in combat, meeting with the iowa republican wednesday, the first female combat veteran to serve in the senate and survivor of sexual assault. >> we had an engaging conversation. >> it was a very thorough conversation. >> reporter: while sources tell us she's on trump's list of possible replacements, she wouldn't engage when asked if if interested. >> mr. hegseth is the nominee. >> did he alleviate your concerns, senator? >> reporter: also on the list tennessee senator bill haggerty and trump's one time primary rival, governor ron desantis. sources saying he's made it clear to trump he's interested in the role. this morning trump's most fervent supporters saying they'll follow his lead, even if it's not clear who he will ultimately choose.

all this as abc news is learning president biden is considering preemive pardons who officials believe the white house may be targeted under the trump administration. hegseth can only afford to lose the support of three republican senators and still get the job. he is expected back on the hill, hoping he can sway enough of them to get over the finish line. george? >> george: thanks. we're going to stay in washington to the supreme court where justices heard oral arguments about a politically charged tennessee law that bans medical innovation for transgender minors. senior national correspondent terry moran is in washington with the story. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is one of the most divisive issues in the country, played a big role in the presidential election. in court this puts a state's power to regulate medical treatment in the name of protecting the health and safety of minor children against the constitutional right to trans kids and their families. this morning the conservative majority on the supreme court appears poised to uphold a ban on gender affirming care for

transgender youth. three families and a doctor supported by the biden administration are challenging a tennessee law that bans procedures like hormone therapy and puberty blockers for minors. several members of the court's conservative majority seemed inclined to leave the decision up to the states. >> the constitution leaves that question to the people's representatives rather than to nine people, none of whom is a doctor. >> reporter: medical treatments for transgender children have been safely used for decades and endorsed by major american medical associations. but since 2021, 26 states have passed laws restricting or banning gender affirming care and some public health authorities in europe are raising questions, too. >> england's pulling back and sweden's pulling back. it strikes me as, you know, pretty heavy yellow light, if not red light, for this court to come in. >> reporter: but the aclu's lawyer, the first trans person

to appear before the court, argue these treatments are life saving for many children. justice sotomayor focusing on that with a stark exchange with a lawyer for the biden administration. >> evidence is very clear that there are some children who need this treatment, isn't there? >> yes, i think the evidence is uniform on that. >> some attempt suicide? >> yes. >> reporter: the justices could up hold tennessee's ban or send the case back down to the lower courts to take a closer look at the constitutional issues. a decision is expected by june. rebecca? >> rebecca: all right. terry, thank you. we turn now to the heated capitol hill hearing. airline executives were grilled by senators over sky rocketing fees that make your plane ticket more expensive. elizabeth schulze has the details. the senators were fired up about this, but what does it mean for flyers? >> reporter: they were fired up. senators are demanding airlines crack down on so called junk fees.

passengers paid $7 billion in luggage fees just last year. airlines are likely to lower the costs voluntarily and congress is far from passing any law that would change their business model. this morning airline executives are under pressure after a turbulent hearing on capitol hill over the fees that make your air fare more expensive. >> nobody enjoys flying the airlines. it's a disaster. you charge people fees they know nothing about. you harass them to death. >> reporter: a senate subcommittee grilling executives over fees charged for early boarding, better seats and other conveniences, voicing many travellers' frustrations. >> they feel, with more than understandable justification, that they are piggy banks to be shaken down by these sky rocketing fees that seem to have no connection to any cost that the airlines incur. >> reporter: senators claim there's a lack of transparency, saying vague pricing makes it

hard for customers to budget. >> we're all captive on your airplanes at a certain point. and you just say, you want to pick a seat, we're just gonna charge you some random amount more. >> reporter: executives rebutting those claims. >> optional services are no so called junk fees. as optional services are not required to travel. >> it has never been more affordable to fly. over time air fares have gone down. >> reporter: senators also say some budget airlines have run a bouncing program, paying employees extra to stop customers. if their bags fail to meet certain requirements. >> your airlines are paying millions of dollars to your employees to harass people, who have already paid! they're there in line because they've already paid. it's unbelievable. >> reporter: now there are already some changes. a new government regulation took effect in october that requires airlines to refund you within seven business days if your domestic flight is

in cases of significant delays or cancellations caused by disruptions such as a mechanical issue or i.t. system breakdown. wal-mart is voluntarily recalling two comfort slices in some of its stores. the marketside fresh cut cucumber slices used whole cucumbers from sun fed which were recalled over salmonella fears. the impacted sliced cucumbers were sold at 34 wal-mart stores in texas. we've got a lot more ahead including prince harry not holding back in a new appearance. that is coming up. over to you, george. >> george: i'm with the president of mcdonald's usa, joe erlinger. here to talk about the e.coli outbreak that's sickened 100 customers across 14 states. thank you for coming in. >> thanks for having me. >> george: the outbreak has been contained. that's been announced. what do you know now? what can you tell people about what happened and where do things stand? >> first of all, thank you so much for having me.

i do want to start by saying, we let people down. i want to apologize to all of our customers who were harmed by this incident. >> george: what happened? >> what happened is, we had onions served on quarter pounders in about 900 restaurants in colorado and surrounding states that were the potential source of the e.coli. as a result of that we took swift action to remove those onions. we stopped using the supplier from where they came. we stopped sourcing onions from the farm. cdc and fda announcement this week gave us the all clear. the investigation is over. this incident is over. the work's not done at mcdonald's. food safety is still our top priority. >> george: what do you have to do? >> we need to continue to rebuild trust with consumers. like i said, we let people down. we have work to do that. it will be on going. food safety at mcdonald's is everybody's business. we make it our priority in our headquarters. it's a priority in our 13,500

restaurants. it's a priority across our supplier facilities. the work is not done. we will focus on food safety. >> george: is it harder now -- we were watching rebecca talk about this. the cucumber salmonella outbreak. are we seeing more of this? what can we do? >> i think there's better reporting and better availability of data. i think that's part of what's happening. what we at mcdonald's do, we partner closely with the cdc and fda. obviously the american public counts on a really strong safe food system in the u.s. we think the partnership with public employee force companies like mcdonald's can do that. >> george: american people are also concerned about prices, inflation. it's hit the fast food industry hard. what can you tell us about what's going on there stphp >> yeah. there's no question that inflation has impacted our business. we have been focusing on value. we did this back in june with the $5 meal deal which has been incredibly popular with consumers. that meal deal will continue. we're committed to do it for at

into the death of one direction singer liam payne. a friend who could still be charged in connection with the tragedy says the hotel where payne die bears responsibility, not him. erielle reshef is here with more. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning. liam payne's friend roger norez could face charges for allegedly abandoning him. but in a legal complaint, norez argues it was the hotel's staff failure to act when the star was clearly in distress that contributed to his death. this morning the last friend to see former one direction star liam payne alive blaming the hotel in argentina for his tragic death. in a new legal filing roger norez, who was with payne in the hours before his fatal fall from a third floor balcony accusing the hotel of failing to provide adequate medical care, claiming they knew payne was in crisis and heavily intoxicated for three days and should have acted arguing they did not even make an effort to make up for their

legal omission of having a 24 hour doctor. >> he's also alleging the hotel manager was the last persons who were actually with him before he passed. so if they were aware he was not in a condition to be left alone, there may be some liability on the side of the hotel. >> reporter: the move comes as authorities in argentina weigh possible charges against norez himself for abandonment. before payne died in october, hotel staff, seen in images from a surveillance camera obtained by tmz carrying payne, whose case is blurred through the lobby of his hotel bringing him into his hotel room. according to tmz the images also show payne surrounded by workers in the hallway near his room before he went inside for the last time. photos of the singer's hotel room taken after his death show a smashed tv and drugs scattered throughout. an autopsy revealing he had a mixture of the party drug pink cocaine, alcohol and

he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly. >> all units be advise male shot in the confines of manhattan. >> reporter: police say it was around 6:45 a.m. wednesday when the suspect gunned down thompson as he was walking alone into the hilton for an investors conference. in new video overnight, the shooter seen here about 20 minutes before the shooting. >> looking for a male 5 feet, 10 inches in height, cream colored jacket, black mask, black gloves. >> reporter: this eyewitness snapping a picture as he fled. >> i was shocked. i fear he could shoot me, too. >> reporter: by the time police arrived the suspect had run off and hopped a bike to get away. detectives working to determine whether he had prepositioned that bike close by. new video overnight showing the suspect pedalling his bike on the upper west side. officers found the 50-year-old insurance executive and father of two collapsed on the sidewalk. did he have any own enemies or anyone that you've been able to find so far? >> we're reaching out to law

enforcement in minnesota and interviewing his coworkers and family members to see if there have been specific threats in the past. >> reporter: investigators found shell casings with writing on them including the words deny, defend, depose. they also found a cell phone, granola bar wrappers and a water bottle they believe are linked to the shooter. just spoke to a source, robin, who says police have sought a search warrant for a location in the city where they think the suspect may have been staying. and those words on the shell casings, deny, depose, defend, that's leading police to theorize that the suspect may have been angry with either united healthcare or the insurance industry as a whole. robin? >> robin: all right, aaron. our thanks to you. we have the latest to the fast moving winter storm that's bringing whiteout conditions and more snow to areas already hit hard. let's go back to trevor ault in water town, new york. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we are under a winter storm warning. we have all of this lake effect

snow. now some areas may get another foot or two piling up through this second system. this is not a localized threat. there are millions of americans in 18 different states under snow and wind alerts. we've been watching especially the wind gusts make this particularly challenging. we saw whiteout conditions sweeping through the plains, into the upper midwest. we have, sadly, seen a number of incidents that have been deadly and dangerous crashes, including right now on i 90 you can see blustery conditions there. an incident involving a semi. traffic backed up. the fear is this will continue through the day as this weather system moves east. we also want to remind people if you are not driving, there are threats with this weather. officials in buffalo say this week two people died after suffering heart attacks while they were shoveling and snow blowing. it is a great reminder for your older family members to not have them overexert in this cold.

rebecca? >> rebecca: please please be careful out there. okay, trevor. thank you. we turn now to concern over students in the u.s. lagging way behind in math. we're going back to elizabeth schulze on what's behind this. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning again, rebecca. this is a sobering study showing how many students are falling behind in such a critical subject area. between 2019 and 2023 test scores for american 4th graders in math dropped by 18 point. scores eighth graders dropped 27 points. when you look at where students stack up compared to other countries, they're only the middle of the back behind student japan, u.k. singapore, poland. experts say covid is one big reason to blame because schools were closed or disrupted in the u.s. for longer than other countries. another issue is too many kids are absent from school altogether. >> rebecca: so much to unpack, elizabeth. this is easier said than done,

♪ ♪ >> george: we're back with our gma cover story. rebecca, you spoke with the ceo of starbucks. >> rebecca: that's right, george. starbucks is such a staple. they've been around a very long time serving 100 million customers a week. but lately customer complaints, from wait times to prices, have been mounting. so the company brought in this new ceo who's known for turning things around at chipotle. i sat down with him to see what he plans to do an change at starbucks. >> we've got this whole mission around getting back to starbuck.

>> reporter: brian niccol is working to return starbucks to its former glory and reinvague rate the 553-year-old brand following slumping sales and customer complaints, like these on social media, from the cost of a drink. >> starbucks and their pricing, baffling, mind blowing, ridonkulous. >> rebecca: to wait times. he took over in september, turning over every detail and quickly addressing a big customer pet peeve. upcharges for alternative milk like almond and oat. what are the other major changes customers can expect? >> you'll see us do simple things. bringing back the sharpies. bringing back the coffee condiment bar. you'll see us continue to push towards, how do we make it easier to get your coffee and simplify the execution for our baristas. >> rebecca: it's not just bringing back the basics. the former chipotle ceo said he's working to improve in store ordering with the goal of getting your drink made in less than four minutes.

he's also working on the app and mobile ordering. the thing i hear a lot is that customers love the options of starbucks. they like being able to order through the app or come in. but it takes awhile. how do you make that go faster? >> so, we're right now investing in, how do we build technology so when a mobile order comes in, we give you a time your drink will be ready. today we can just give you an estimate, it will be ready in 3-5 minutes. in the future, we will say, rebecca, your drink will be ready in nine instead of sitting there waiting for people to come. >> rebecca: and eyeing a smaller menu, eliminating less popular items to get your coffee faster. what kinds of things are going to have to go? >> we got a lot of offerings that there's one or two ordered a day. the way i talk about it is, we're going to do fewer things but fewer things better.

>> reporter: but for now, these changes won't come at a higher cost. you have chipotle, your former company, hiking prices 2% higher. is starbucks going to hike prices or is inflation, as far as starbucks concerned, done? >> we're going to it this pause button on pricing for this fiscal year. i still think there's an opportunity for us to simplify the pricing architecture. i don't love the fact that in our app right now, while you're doing the customization, it doesn't inform you what's happened to the price. i want to get more transparent with the pricing. >> rebecca: and he promises none of the innovation will come with a decline in quality. five years from now if i walk into a starbucks, how different is it going to look from today? >> i think what you're going to see is a very ordinarily mobile order business with its own dedicated pickup area. when you walk in, my hope is we can get you a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds. >> rebecca: you like that?

sounds pretty good. he also said he really wants to work on making the chairs at every single starbucks really comfortable so you want to sit there. i said, what about the people doing work from home in the cafe? how do you feel about them hanging out? he's good with it. he doesn't mind it. he would rather have people there enjoying themselves. >> robin: good. >> rebecca: spending time than not. >> robin: good. >> george: thank you, rebecca. that was interesting. ginger? >> ginger: thank you so much. let's look at the blizzard conditions. i know lot of people will say, it's a blizzard out there. it's not really. there's an actual definition and threshold. 35 mile per hour plus winds three hours or more less than quarter mile visibility. blizzard warnings are on. all the way down into west virginia. wind advisories from massachusetts to north carolina. look at those gusts. close to 50 mile per hour by noon today. it is going to be rough out there. the wind chill and cold weather advisory down to mississippi tomorrow. let's get a check closer to home.

all we're going to do is cut the handles off these buckets. cut a hole out of the bottom. this gives you a diy tree collar. thread your trunk through the hole you cut. attach your tree feet in the bucket and you are good to go. you can leave it as is or spice it up and spray paint it. >> rebecca: you painted that one. i was wondering if they came in gold. >> all things gold. >> rebecca: what are we doing with the hot glue gun? you know i love a hot glue gun. >> same. >> rebecca: and it is plugged in. >> we're making an oversized holiday bell using two punch bowls from the dollar store. a smaller bowl and shower curtain rings. all we're going to do for this is put glue on the rim of two punch bowls. glue our smaller bowl and shower curtain ring. >> rebecca: this is a bowl for food. >> a salsa bowl. >> rebecca: and then again, you spray painted it. >> i painted on black designs. added ribbon and greenery. you have a cute expensive holiday diy.

i am a gamer. >> she knows how to keep your eyes glued to the pages but writing fantasy for the first time presented a unique challenge. >> i write crime. when you do bad things, there are laws on the books that say you are punished this way, this way. with writing a romantasy, i had to make that up. you have to make up the laws, religion, sociological issues. that was hard for me to fully appreciate and enjoy. >> romantasy or even fantasy can often be intimidating for new readers diving into this. i am so struck by how conversational and easy to read your book was. >> i want to make it so that people who don't read a lot of

fantasy feel comfortable. in so many words i am kai. i am coming into this new space. >> with nothing and no one as it seems the last one is equal parts romance, fantasy and thriller with an ending that begs for a sequel. >> kai is still going at it. still trying to save the world. she's angrier because no one is cooperating. she's being set back in her journey to do this thing that is required of her. she is a natural extension of every woman that i have ever met and that was fun. >> all right. i kid you not. this is one of those stories that goes from 0 to 100 in no time. the ending is the kind that flips everything on its head. villains might be saviors. bottom line, you need a sequel.
