l'm holy crap! >> dad, there's an earthquake happening. look at the pool. >> yes, look at it. chaos on the coast after a massive 7.0 earthquake struck just before 11:00 this morning off the coast of humboldt county, triggering a tsunami warning spanning from the coast of davenport in santa cruz county, all the way to douglas and lane counties in oregon, and impacting at least 5.3 million people in
5:01 pm
california. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the earthquake was so powerful that, according to the u.s. geological survey, more than 1.3 million people live close enough to feel it. fortunately, there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries, but there were reports of damage like broken water mains windows and about 10,000 people in humboldt county were without power. that's according to state senator mike mcguire. >> so let's take a look at how this morning's events unfolded at 1044. that big earthquake hit off the coast of humboldt county, initially reported as a 6.0. the usgs revised the magnitude to 7.0. then, just five minutes later, at 10:49 a.m, the national weather service issued a tsunami warning stretching from the oregon border nearly down to santa cruz. the tsunami was predicted to hit san francisco at 12:10 p.m. people around the coastal areas of the bay area started evacuating and heading to higher ground. but at 11:54 a.m, the tsunami warning was canceled because big waves had not
5:02 pm
materialized. >> thankfully, thankfully is right and we've put together. abc seven news team coverage with meteorologist sandhya patel. here to talk about the tsunami warning. >> reporter anser hassan and tim jones are along the coast in san francisco and san mateo counties, where people took precaution because of that tsunami warning. >> but we're going to begin now with cornell bernard, who is live in humboldt county. cornel. >> yeah, dan, it has been a day to remember here in humboldt county. and that's certainly putting it mildly. after that 7.0 earthquake got everyone's attention this morning around 1045. we're here in the community of rio del. it's about 25 miles south of eureka and everyone certainly felt the shaking here. and damage assessments are still being done at this hour. luckily, no injuries reported. believe it or not. now blue slide road, just outside of town, has been closed since this morning when the quake hit, causing a very large crack in the pavement. the fire department has shut that road
5:03 pm
down with barricades. surveillance video from inside city hall caught the moment the shaking started, sending an employee running for cover in downtown. a liquor store took a major hit from the quake. the owner tells us he lost about $5,000 worth of product and bottles. glass is everywhere. the cleanup job is certainly not over yet. >> so what have you been doing all day then? >> just cleaning through the garbage. that's it. all day. >> and you had damage to a couple of years ago, too, right? >> oh, a couple of years. i lose, like, maybe 150,000. >> all right, here's valley grocery. i've seen it worse. >> yeah, he said $150,000, actually, from that earthquake. nearby ferndale. they certainly felt the shaking this morning. many things on the shelves at the valley grocery took a tumble onto the floor when the quake hit. same goes for people's homes where stuff that wasn't secured fell down quickly. luckily, we're not hearing about
5:04 pm
any major damage or injuries in that community. the owners of a wine shop were pretty surprised this morning when they entered. they found most of the wine still on the shelves. bottles which did fall did not break, so it never hurts to be lucky. about two years ago, a 6.4 earthquake things were certainly a different story. there was a lot of damage, a lot of injuries, and damage pretty much all across the county. in fact, at that liquor store that we were at maybe about 25 minutes ago, there were wires across all of the shelves because they didn't want bottles falling off for the next earthquake. of course, it happened. this morning and the wires didn't do any, any, any good. the, the quake was just so forceful it forced the bottles over the wire and onto the floor. so even precautions were no good today
5:05 pm
when that 7.0 earthquake hit. we're live in the town of rio del. humboldt county. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> all right, ken cornell, thank you so much for that update. and this is the push alert that went out to at least 5.3 million people in california, advising them that the national weather service had issued that tsunami warning. >> and here's a look at the waves at ocean beach in san francisco just before noon today. >> so for more on the tsunami warning, let's get to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. >> yeah, dan and ama, let's take a look at that earthquake first, and then we'll talk about the tsunami warning. it was a major 7.0 earthquake. 1044 in the morning. the depth was six miles. as you will notice, i'm going to show you all the aftershocks. there have been 148 so far off the humboldt county coast. maximum magnitude 5.0. there were smaller earthquakes right around that time in lake county, 36 reported there. you will notice that the strongest of the shake intensity was felt right near the epicenter of that earthquake, but that was felt all across northern and parts of
5:06 pm
central california. if we can come back to the graphics, i'm not quite sure. dan and ama why we have left the graphics, but there we go. it was felt all the way into the bay area. not as strong as you can see here. it was at the mendocino triple point, which is where three plates converge. the northern end of the san andreas fault is up there, along with the north american pacific and the juan de fuca or the gorda plates meet a current wave. heights 5 to 7ft. that tsunami warning was canceled about an hour later because initially they thought it was vertical movement of the plates, and that would have caused a tsunami. but later on, they decided it was horizontal movement, which is why we did not see the tsunami materialize on the west coast or the bay area. some tsunami tsunami facts. they can travel hundreds of miles up to speeds of 500mph or higher. so this is really interesting. it will depend on the depth, the type and the magnitude of the earthquake. as
5:07 pm
we take a look at the formation of the tsunami, you will notice that once an earthquake occurs, the energy travels up and expands in all directions from where the earthquake occurred. so just keep these things in mind. you will notice that as the earthquake causes the tsunamis, the waves build pulling the water from the coast and you get right before inundation, you will get the energy being forced upward. so that is just something to keep in mind. and in the water can spread well inland. we saw that happen in santa cruz. >> dan okay sandhya, thanks very much. now the usgs says people who live near the quake's epicenter should expect aftershocks to continue. there have been dozens and dozens. seismologists say the area is in earthquake country. >> this is a this is an area where earthquakes are common and there's nothing particularly unusual about this event other than that it is fairly large. this earthquake is not what anyone would consider a surprise, and i wouldn't say
5:08 pm
that there are some hidden concerns. you know, obviously for those that are impacted up there, there's going to take some time to do some damage assessment to make sure that infrastructure is safe and usable and that sort of thing. but in terms of long, long term effects, we don't have a good picture of that just yet. >> the usgs says today's earthquake is a good reminder for people to be prepared by having emergency supply kits on hand, as well as downloading the shakealert early warning system app on your phone now. >> the tsunami warning prompted the closure of the great highway in san francisco and forced surfers from the water at ocean beach. that's where abc seven news reporter anser hassan is standing by live with reaction and the response from emergency crews. hi answer. >> hey, what's going on? we have been out here since 11 a.m, but you can see these waves still pretty consistent. we spoke to some people who live just one block from here. they say they are relieved that the alert was canceled. they need to disperse
5:09 pm
and start heading up right now. >> the san francisco fire department warning was clear get out! >> after a tsunami warning was issued for california's coast. >> we were actually at a farmers market. and i said, well, let's get home and make sure that we're there. >> at least peter perrelli lives just one block from ocean beach, he says. as time went by and the waves weren't getting bigger, he felt like things might be okay. >> we have our go go bags and everything ready to go and stuff like that, so we're prepared. but i immediately looked at everything i could find and i could tell that, well, it might be 1ft or 2 foot, and this is more than enough of a cliff. and a berm to deal with that. >> thursday morning, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake was reported off the coast of northern california, which prompted the tsunami warning. some surfers were already in the water when the warning was issued. jay laviolette says surfing is part of his daily routine. he didn't ignore the warning, but he says once in the water he could sense that the water did not feel different.
5:10 pm
>> just the way it is here. there's the breakwall like the seawall. i think it would take a seriously huge tsunami for it to really impact our neighborhood. >> the great highway was closed for a short while, but once the warning was lifted, they reopened the roads back up. reporting live anser hassan abc seven news. >> all right, joe, thanks very much. on the peninsula, many residents along the coast in san mateo county also evacuated earlier today. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been in half moon bay for us all afternoon, and he is live with the story. there. tim. >> yeah. dan, i got to tell you, things are pretty much back to normal here in half moon bay. but earlier this morning, there was definitely a sense of panic among many residents here along the peninsula coast who were very keen to get out of town as quickly as possible. now, after that earthquake and ensuing tsunami warning, coastal roadways here in san mateo county were absolutely heavily congested. at one point,
5:11 pm
deputies from the sheriff's office even closing down part of highway one and urging residents to seek higher ground. now, most of the restaurants and shops here in town also closed down for several hours today, amid that chaos, we stopped by one local fish restaurant where employees told us they had just begun serving their first customers of the day when their boss called them and told them to leave. >> i called my wife and my daughter and they said, no, we have to go. we're getting these notices, so we just went up to the highlands, you know, and waiting. >> now, after the warning was lifted, we did see many residents returning here to town and businesses starting to reopen. but dan and i got to tell you guys, even though things are returning back to normal here in half moon bay and along the coast in san mateo county, the sheriff's office did tell us they are still urging residents to exercise caution, especially if they're coming down here near the water. i'm live in half moon bay. tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you. moving on to some other news. there's new information tonight on a shooting that sent two

nami warning and the concern about rising water along the san francisco waterfront. you hear that clinking noise? well, that's actually being caused by the mass of these sailboats swinging back and forth at the fort mason yacht harbor. nearby craft boaters at fisherman's wharf feared that swaying would intensify and damage their boats.
