screen. while we haven't heard of any injuries, the earthquake disrupted life for many people living up there. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is in ferndale, where he saw some of the damage firsthand. >> still, lots of frayed nerves in humboldt county tonight. most people know exactly where they were thursday morning, when that 7.0 quake hit. >> one big jolt, a little bit of jiggle. lots of roll. >> that's what it felt like to rio del mayor pro tem amanda carter. a quake so strong it sent employees at city hall running for cover and caused this large crack in blue slide road, prompting the fire department to close the roadway to traffic. luckily, no major damage or injuries reported, but the shaking seemed to go on for a very long time. >> it went on for a solid 45 to 60s is what it felt like to me. of course they always feel longer, but like you've been drinking. that's what it felt like downtown. >> this liquor store took a major hit from the quake. the

owner tells us he lost about $5,000 worth of bottles. glass is everywhere. the cleanup job certainly not over yet. >> so, what have you been doing all day then? >> just cleaning through the garbage. that's it. all day. >> but man, everything in all the rooms went crashing down. >> in ferndale, the quake turned martin tubbs house upside down. he shot this video of the big mess left behind. scary and stressful. >> my wife was really freaking out. all the stuff in bookcases and shelves and whatnot just caved in. >> items toppled from the shelves at valley grocery store. some people's large appliances even moved several feet and headstones at the ferndale cemetery were cracked. this quake doing far less damage than a 6.4 magnitude quake two years ago. but the stress is still there. >> we're all a little on edge because you never know when there's another one. i mean, it could be a week, it could be ten days. it could be. not at all.

but when a big one like that rolls through, you're always on edge for a little while afterwards. >> we've been hearing about broken water pipes, broken water mains, even a gas leak near a school. everything has since been repaired. remarkably, no major damage or injuries. in humboldt county. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> all right. we want to bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. >> that's right. try to give us a better understanding of the earthquake and that tsunami warning we had. sandhya. >> yeah, and dan and ama. really? this was a major earthquake. the only good thing about it was it was over the ocean. so let's talk a at 1044 . 7.0, a depth of six miles. it was off the humboldt county coast, as you just heard. and there have been multiple aftershocks. over 100. to be precise, the maximum magnitude 5.0. there were some smaller quakes right around lake county at the same time or within a few minutes. dozens of reports of that. and as we take a look here, the tsunami warning that was issued for the west coast,

the bay area and california included was canceled a short time later. so really, initially they thought it was a vertically moving plates, but it turned out that they were horizontally moving when there were horizontally moving side by side. you don't get the same kind of impact, but certainly was felt strong impact shaking intensity near the epicenter. you will notice it was felt up and down northern and central california. of course, here in the bay area it was weak to light. it was so far away. but as we take a look at the san andreas fault, runs up along the northern california coast. so the northern periphery of it, the wave heights currently anywhere from 6 to 8ft. as we check out point arena area. this was from the national weather service. there was a point three foot non destructive tsunami that did occur. but we have seen in santa cruz in years past 2011 when they had that tsunami, that it can be pretty destructive warning as i should say. look at the tsunami facts. they can

travel for miles for over 500 miles. the energy that it has can also just travels up and then expands. so this is really the concern with the strike slip earthquake. we were saved as opposed to one that is vertically moving because that could have caused a lot of devastation with tsunamis going off. >> dan okay, sandhya, thanks very much. well, this was the strongest earthquake to hit the north coast region since 1992. we have not seen any significant damage, but there are plenty of families cleaning up tonight. the unmistakable raw power of an earthquake in northern california as a calm morning was disrupted by violent shaking. a number of home cameras captured the moment a 7.0 magnitude quake struck off the humboldt county coastline. a christmas tree swaying in eureka and a cat scurrying across the floor. it was all felt hundreds of miles away. you can see signs swaying inside a grocery store in davis

and in glenn county, which is to the east of the epicenter. a man walked out to this. >> so just got the alert for the earthquake, and it overflowed our pool. >> the small town of fortuna, which is north of rio del. got a good shake too. video from the living room shows debris suddenly flying and two cats running as the quake hit and someone snowman wobbled as the earth shook. >> there wasn't one plate glass window broken on our historic main street, which usually there is in ferndale. >> things scattered on a grocery store's floor, bottles knocked off the shelves at the bar. still, they're feeling very fortunate, especially given the area's seismic history. >> we really dodged a bullet on this one. consider ourselves lucky. >> very lucky. and the earthquake and tsunami warning left many people wondering what am i supposed to do? many got word to evacuate or move to higher ground, but are those warnings more dire? depending on where you live? >> that's a great question. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone spoke to several experts about

what you need to know. >> they did the right thing in this situation. a seven magnitude earthquake is not a small earthquake. and it could have been devastating. >> amy palmer is referring to the tsunami warning that was issued thursday here in the bay area and along the west coast. after the 7.0 earthquake struck offshore along the northern california coast. palmer is deputy director of the california governor's office of emergency services. >> sometimes when the earthquake happens a little further out, there are buoys that give us some indication of how big the waves might be. in this case, we didn't have that data. >> after the warning was issued thursday and before it was canceled, some san franciscans went to coit tower. the highest spot in the city's north beach neighborhood. merry christmas. in sausalito, where there was a christmas tree lighting thursday night, the talk was still all about those tsunami warnings that went out. >> i didn't panic that much.

>> it begs the question, how safe are we here in the bay area if a tsunami hits coastal lakis heads, usc's tsunami research center, and we are not yet scientifically at the point that we can predict immediately after an earthquake, after a big offshore earthquake, how big the tsunami will be. tsunami scientist jose borrero says that if there was a tsunami, waves would likely look different after coming under the golden gate bridge and into the san francisco bay. >> generally we're not. we wouldn't be thinking of like the big mammoth wall of water somewhere inside the bay. that's of course, a different story. if you're outside on the open coast. >> borrero says there are exceptions, though, and he says that those in cities along the san francisco bay should still use caution. >> even in a small tsunami, waves can generate really large currents when the earthquake is so close, and in the first

minutes it happens. we really do not know that information very well. so it's important to actually always on the side of caution. >> j.r. stone abc seven news. >> and we did get on the air early this morning soon after the earthquake hit. and we stayed on for hours to cover the tsunami warning and impacts here in the bay area. when breaking news happens you will find us on tv on abc seven news.com and on the abc seven bay area app wherever you stream. >> we're going to move on now. a sad update to a story we first brought you earlier this week. police believe a livermore hiker who disappeared while mountain climbing in new zealand is, in fact, dead. carlos romero and two other climbers disappeared while scaling new zealand's highest peak. today, police said they likely fell. crews have not recovered their bodies. romero was an experienced climber. >> happening tomorrow. a man convicted of a mass shooting in sunnyvale decades ago could be resentenced to life in prison. and that decision isn't exactly

sitting well with the families of his victims. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez spoke to one widow, who says that change is a slap in the face. >> buddy was the absolute love of my life. i miss him every day. i think of him every day. >> elizabeth allen lost her husband buddy, in a mass shooting on february 16th, 1988. allen and her husband both worked at the tech firm esl incorporated in sunnyvale. the shooter and former employee richard farley, killed seven people that day and wounded six others. >> buddy was the only one who died immediately because as he was sitting working at his desk, he was shot in the face with a shotgun. at the age of 23. >> farley was convicted and then sentenced to death in 1992. now, 32 years after that decision, farley will have a resentencing hearing on friday. earlier this year, santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen announced a plan to seek new

sentences of life without the possibility of parole for inmates previously sentenced to death in the county. >> in terms of judges and juries, they're going to decide where a person dies and that's going to be in prison for the rest of their lives. in terms of when that person is going to die. that's going to be god's decision. >> in rosen's petition for farley, it states the community does not deserve an archaic, error strewn and racist system of capital punishment. >> saying to the public that this was about social injustice and then it not being at all about social injustice was offensive and insulting, all by itself. >> former santa clara county district attorney dolores carr says no one is standing up for the victims families since 2008, and there's a moratorium. >> what is the point of resentencing them? except that now they're subject to being commuted by the governor. >> carr says she's expecting a large group to show their opposition on friday. >> why would we tell the united

old injured students have been identified as elias wolford and roman mendez. the shooting happened at the feather river school of seventh day adventist near oroville. investigators say the 56 year old gunman was suffering from severe mental illness. >> a local venture capitalist will join president elect donald trump's team in the new year. mr. trump appointed david sachs to be his white house artificial intelligence and crypto czar. sachs is the former ceo of palo alto based paypal. this summer, sachs held a fundraiser for the president elect at his san francisco home. sachs has investments in major companies including meta, uber, spacex and airbnb. >> the a's are a major step closer to seeing the team's new home field in las vegas become a reality. the las vegas stadium authority has approved a 30 year lease and other paperwork that clears the way for construction. the stadium will be located on the strip and is expected to cost $1.75 billion to build, it

old shipping label. >> that happens a lot where people leave the old one on, and it causes a lot of issues with sorting. >> all things to keep in mind as the holiday season rolls out. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> busy. busy. >> yes. all right. let's check on our weather because we also want to hear more about the earthquake. >> we do. it's been a very busy day and an intense day. meteorologist sandyha patel is here. sandy. >> yeah. and, dan, let's talk about that earthquake. the 7.0 off the mendocino coast earlier this morning. the timeline of it all at 1044, that earthquake struck at 1049. a tsunami warning was issued for the west coast, which included the bay area and california. obviously, at 1154, the warning was canceled. now, keep in mind, this was a strike slip earthquake, which means the plates were moving horizontally, which did lessen the probability of a tsunami for us. but until they can clear it, they obviously had to keep that up. the tsunami warning center, that 7.0 earthquake was a depth of six miles. once they discovered

initially they thought it was vertically moving plates and that has a higher probability of tsunamis. but once they found out it was horizontally moving and they were able to examine whether there were any tsunamis, they did drop that warning. but always take a warning seriously. here are the fault lines in california. the san andreas runs all the way northward. there are two other plates that converge in this highly seismically active area where the earthquake occurred. it's known as the mendocino triple junction. so it's not surprising that they had a major earthquake there. it was a seven, but the fact that it was over the open water lessened any damage. buildings could be damaged with the seven, and there are about 18 per year. so let's talk about those tsunamis near the coastline. well, basically ends up happening as a series of waves start to build. they pull the water away from the coastline and then the waves get larger as they come up near the coast. as that energy is forced up against the coastline. and that's when you get the inundation that

spreads well inland. so always take it seriously. if another tsunami warning is ever issued and you happen to live near the coastline, definitely move to higher ground. go about a mile inland. if you can make a plan to meet up with your family. a meeting point, always a good idea and look for warning signs. the sudden draining of the ocean water. because that's usually a sign that here comes that water. it's coming back in. a beautiful view. meanwhile, from our exploratorium camera right now, as we look across the bay this morning, we did have a lot of cloud cover and some fog. we even had a couple of sprinkles move through the bay area, but it didn't measure. there was trace amounts in half moon bay. as we take a look at the visibility right now, just over a mile in santa rosa with some thick fog starting to form. here's the system that is going to bring some changes for the first part of your weekend. it will cloud us up and temperatures are going down. right now the numbers are in the 40s and the 50s. as we check out the temperatures for san jose this month, the last five days have been above average by a

good 9 to 10 degrees. that will continue for a couple more days before things fall off. emeryville. looking at a beautiful view tomorrow morning. fog, mild to warm. afternoon. the start of the weekend is cooler with more clouds on saturday and late next week. rain makes a return tomorrow morning. it's the fog you're going to have to watch out for near the coast and around the bay. it's going to take a little bit of time before it pulls back to the coastline. your morning temperatures will be in the 30s and the 40s. your afternoon highs with fog near the coast, sunshine elsewhere in the 60s and 70s. now looking ahead to that rain, it is coming in to the pacific northwest this weekend. we have to wait until next friday and saturday before we start to see a wet pattern with snow in the sierra. accuweather seven day forecast. mild to warm tomorrow. temperatures starting to drop this weekend. next week we're going to be back down to average. and last time i checke, ama and dan don't like average. >> who wants to be average? >> we want to be above average,
