here doing extensive coverage. >> my goodness. yeah, for about an hour yesterday. it was pretty exciting seeing if we would see any waves or not. thankfully, all is calm this morning and we're on tap for a really nice afternoon later on today. here's a look at live doppler seven. we do have issues with fog out there in the north bay. some of our typical spots the russian river valley, santa rosa right now, even novato, anywhere from a half of a mile to a mile and a half visibility in the north bay. outside of those areas, we're doing just fine. so we do have that fog first thing in spots that will linger through about the 8 a.m. hour. temperatures right now we have clear skies up above and that is leading to a colder morning about five degrees colder compared to this time yesterday. so a lot of us are sitting in the 40s right now as we get you going on this friday. but we're in store a lot of sunshine today. we'll see temperatures back into the low 60s along the coast. just a fantastic looking end to the week. heading around the bay shoreline. you have that chilly start right now. temperatures in the mid 40s, but with that sunshine we're going into the upper 60s. i think a few spots hit the

lower 70s once again this afternoon, about ten degrees above average and then inland it's looking fantastic. a cold start out there. have a couple of layers. then this afternoon the payoff is above average temperatures. december warmth back into the 60s. let's see how the commute is going. >> yeah, let's start with our drive times with a look at the altamont pass. you can see there's a typical slowdown there. 29 minutes is what it will take you to get from tracy to dublin, 16 minutes from san rafael to san francisco and then 13 minutes to get from antioch to concord and then a live look from our emeryville cam. this, of course, is the east shore freeway headlights headed toward the bay bridge. and then our time from highway four to san francisco. >> 26 minutes as you're sleeping. we were tracking the situation in humboldt county overnight. more aftershocks rattling the area after that powerful earthquake off the coast yesterday morning. so you're looking right now at the usgs earthquake map. the red dots are earthquakes that happened in the last hour. the orange happened in the last day. and you can see just how many there have been. the 7.0

magnitude earthquake caused intense shaking in humboldt county, rocking some homes and causing stoplights to sway in eureka, hundreds of miles away in butte county, water sloshed out of pools. and here in the bay area, the quake triggered a tsunami warning that caused people to rush to get away from the coast. the warning was over in about an hour, with no damage here. >> governor newsom declared a state of emergency to get resources to impacted areas more quickly. the epicenter of that quake was off the coast of humboldt county. while we haven't heard of any injuries, the earthquake disrupted life for many people living up there. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard went to ferndale, where he saw some damage firsthand. >> still, lots of frayed nerves in humboldt county tonight. most people know exactly where theyst were thursday morning, when that 7.0 quake hit. >> one big jolt. a little bit of jiggle. lots of roll. >> that's what it felt like to rio del mayor pro tem amanda

carter. a quake so strong it sent employees at city hall running for cover and caused this large crack in blue slide road, prompting the fire department to close the roadway to traffic. luckily, no major damage or injuries reported, but the shaking seemed to go on for a very long time. >> it went on for a solid 45 to 60s is what it felt like to me. of course, they always feel longer, but like you've been drinking. that's what it felt like downtown. >> this liquor store took a major hit from the quake. the owner tells us he lost about $5,000 worth of bottles. glass is everywhere. the cleanup job? certainly not over yet. >> so what have you been doing all day then? >> just cleaning through the garbage. that's it. all day. >> but man, everything in all the rooms went crashing down in ferndale. >> the quake turned martin tubbs house upside down. he shot this video of the big mess left behind. scary and stressful. >> my wife was really freaking

out. all the stuff in bookcases and shelves and whatnot just caved in. >> items toppled from the shelves at valley grocery store. some people's large appliances even moved several feet and headstones at the ferndale cemetery were cracked. this quake, doing far less damage than a 6.4 magnitude quake two years ago. but the stress is still there. >> we're all a little on edge because you never know when there's another one. i mean, it could be a week, it could be ten days. it could be. not at all. but when a big one like that rolls through, you're always on edge for a little while afterwards. >> we've been hearing about broken water pipes, broken water mains, even a gas leak near a school. everything has since been repaired. remarkably, no major damage or injuries. in humboldt county. cornell, in bernard. abc seven news. >> that is pretty amazing. the earthquake and tsunami warning impacted bay area transit. bart, muni and samtrans all made changes to respond to the earthquake and the tsunami warning. other transit agencies say they did not

have any service impact because of the san francisco zoo's proximity to the coast, officials decided to close out of an abundance of caution with sky seven overhead yesterday. >> you see, there was no one to be found. the zoo issued a statement saying, quote, guests have been evacuated, animals secured and staff have moved to higher ground. >> san francisco's hyde street pier was closed for several hours yesterday morning, even after the tsunami warning was canceled. rangers had to inspect the site before allowing tourists back into the national park. crab boaters at fisherman's wharf jumped into action when the alert came in. one fisherman described the dangers their boats would face if a tsunami actually happened while they were attached to the pier. >> you could sink boats, you know. you could rip boats apart, rip, rip, rip the side rails off of boats. we've seen boats submerged at docks before. from tsunami surges. >> michael cooley says police boats passed by urging voters to leave the docks. nearly a dozen boaters headed out to the middle of the bay until they were given

ventilator. >> the fact that they are currently still with us, i think, is a miracle and something that we should all be very thankful for. shots fired two seven cox lane between highway 70 and stimson road. >> police say the shooter, 56 year old glenn linton, took an uber to the school after setting up a meeting with the principal about enrolling a student, but they say it was all a ruse. linton seen here, his hand inside his jacket, concealing a handgun. >> after that, he pulls the firearm and initiates his attack. >> police say linton turned the gun on himself after shooting the boy. his criminal history dates back decades and includes identity theft, fraud and forgery. investigators say while suffering from severe mental illness, he may have targeted the christian school in response to america's involvement in the middle east. >> how it was that he conflated what's going on in palestine and yemen with the seventh day adventist church. i can't

speculate. >> police say linton had also scheduled a similar meeting with an affiliated school in another town. as for those two boys, they remained in critical condition last night. rhiannon. ally abc news, new york performance crews have capped a broken sewage line that spewed millions of gallons of wastewater into an east bay marsh. >> that leak was near the shore acres pump station in bay point. the delta diablo sanitation district says the broken line was discovered monday, and it was giving off quite the stench. the district says corrosion caused the pipeline to fail. testing now being done to make sure the water is safe and nothing has damaged the environment. >> 509 this morning in the accuweather forecast. we'll begin with a live look outside from san jose. that's 87. you see the cars traveling on this morning. we have clear skies here. temperatures starting out in the mid 40s in the south bay. we'll take a live look a little bit further to the north from the exploratorium camera, and you can see current sky conditions across the board.

no matter where you are right now we have those clear skies, but areas around, say santa rosa, even petaluma are dealing with some low visibility. some fog has developed in our valleys of the north bay. just be aware of that this morning. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we're tracking another picture perfect day december warmth this afternoon. the storm track is so far to our north. look at the very top of your screen. that's where the storm track is around vancouver, canada. so you can see california is underneath dry weather patterns over the next 24 hours and even into the weekend. it looks fantastic. so here's future weather as we go, hour by hour for you. by 9 a.m. we're climbing into the 50s with full sunshine out there. by noon it feels pleasant. temperatures already above average at this hour and then heading deeper into the day. here's 245. we'll be in the mid 60s to the low 70s for daytime highs. for any friday night activities you may have. it's not all that chilly early on. by 730 we're mainly in the mid and upper 50s at that hour, so

begins, is meeting in front of clark county to get final approval. reporting near the strip. i'm ryan ketchum. >> opening night for san francisco ballet's nutcracker will go on as planned tonight. a labor dispute involving members of the american guild of musical artists threatened the season. yesterday, the union announced it reached a tentative agreement with the ballet on a new contract. the deal still. the deal still needs to be ratified, but performances will go on as planned. the union represents the dancers and stage managers. san francisco's weeks long hotel strike is now impacting a convention coming to the city. soundtrack. display unicode. the association of american law schools announced they're moving next month's annual meeting from a union square hotel to the moscone center. about 2500 attendees were planning to stay at the hilton and park 55. in a letter to attendees, the association's executive director and ceo said, we know that

in on the identity of the man accused of killing the ceo of united health care. i'm nicole deantonio in washington. with the new images police hope will bring new leads in the case. >> where do you go? what do you do? yesterday's tsunami warning had many people confused after being told to evacuate to higher ground. good morning everyone. it is friday, december 6th. >> yeah, things got a little unruly yesterday, but thankfully we're all okay. and meteorologist drew tuma was taking you through that for hours and hours. >> yeah, thankfully, everything has calmed down. we're still tracking some aftershocks near that quake off of humboldt county. the last 24 hours. but locally, we are quiet and we are calm. this morning. we do have some patches of fog out there in the north bay. santa rosa, down to half of a mile. fairfield less than two miles. a similar story in novato. we do anticipate this fog sticking with us through about the 8 a.m. hour this morning. the lack of any cloud cover upstairs is keeping us cooler this morning compared to this time yesterday, by about six degrees in many areas. so

train one is seeing a 20 minute delay in stockton, so just keep that in mind. if you take ace. and this morning, new york police appear to be getting closer to identifying the man wanted for shooting and kilg the ceo of united health care. investigators have released new surveillance images as they pieced together clues about what happened. abc news reporter nicole d'antonio has the story. reporter. >> this morning, investigators continue poring through surveillance video as they try and track down the man accused of shooting and killing the 50 year old ceo of united health care, brian thompson. take a look. police releasing these new surveillance photos. they say a woman checking in the suspect at a new york city hospital asked to see his smile. the suspected shooter then pulled down his mask just long enough for the surveillance camera to capture his face. police, now receiving a flood of tips as their manhunt enters a third day. >> looking for a male about five feet, ten inches in height. cream colored jacket. black mask. black gloves.

>> law enforcement sources tell abc news the shooter arrived in new york last month on a bus from atlanta. he then checked into the hostel using a fake name. police are also learning more about the specific nine millimeter gun. the man used as they tracked down recent sales of its type across the region. >> we are on the right pathway. >> police have not revealed a motive, but they found clues that may point to a grudge against unitedhealthcare or the whole insurance industry, including shell casings with the words deny, defend and depose written on them. this echoes the title of a 2010 book, delay, deny, defend why insurance companies don't pay claims and what you can do about it. >> i think this shooter is trying to send a message that someone, either himself or a loved one, or someone close to him, has been harmed by by this insurance company. >> unitedhealth is the largest private health insurer in the u.s. earlier this year, activists targeted the company in its home state of minnesota.

protesters accusing the company of greed and pointing to thompson's $10 million compensation package. law enforcement are now calling this a premeditated, pre-planned and targeted attack. they're now offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. nicole deantonio, abc news, washington. >> well, that was certainly scare me. talking about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit northern california. you can see from this video yesterday's quake rocked a home in fortuna in humboldt county that's less than 50 miles from the epicenter. aftershocks have been happening all night long, so here's a recap of what happened at 1045 in the morning. a big earthquake hit off the coast of humboldt county yesterday. it was initially reported as 6.0, but the usgs revised the magnitude all the way up to 7.0. some people here in the

bay area felt the shaking five minutes later at 1049. the national weather service issued a tsunami warning now that stretched 500 miles from oregon, all the way down near santa cruz. that tsunami was predicted to hit san francisco at 12:10 p.m. people around coastal areas of the bay started evacuating and heading to higher ground, but then, thankfully, at 11:54 a.m, the tsunami warning was canceled because the big waves did not form. yesterday's events left many people wondering what am i supposed to do in an emergency? >> and many got word to evacuate or move to higher ground. but are those warnings more dire depending on where you live? abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with several experts about what you need to know. >> they did the right thing in this situation. a seven magnitude earthquake is not a small earthquake and it could have been devastating. >> amy palmer is referring to the tsunami warning that was issued thursday here in the bay area. and along the west coast.

after the 7.0 earthquake struck offshore along the northern california coast. palmer is deputy director of the california governor's office of emergency services. >> sometimes when the earthquake happens a little further out, there are buoys that give us some indication of how big the waves might be. in this case, we didn't have that data. >> after the warning was issued thursday and before it was canceled, some san franciscans went to coit tower, the highest spot in the city's north beach neighborhood. merry christmas. in sausalito, where there was a christmas tree lighting thursday night, the talk was still all about those tsunami warnings that went out. >> i didn't panic that much. >> it begs the question, how safe are we here in the bay area? if a tsunami hits? kostas lakis heads usc's tsunami research center, and we are not yet scientifically at the point that we can predict immediately

after an earthquake, after a big offshore earthquake, how big the tsunami will be. tsunami scientist jose borrero says that if there was a tsunami, waves would likely look different. after coming under the golden gate bridge and into the san francisco bay. >> generally we're not. we wouldn't be thinking of like the big mammoth wall of water somewhere inside the bay. yeah, that's, of course, a different story. if you're outside on the open coast. >> borrero says there are exceptions, though, and he says that those in cities along the san francisco bay should still use caution. >> even in a small tsunami, waves can generate really large currents. when the earthquake is so close and in the first minutes it happens, we really do not know that information very well. so it's important to actually always on the side of caution. >> j.r. stone abc seven news. >> so we know how to prepare for an earthquake. but are you

anthem blue cross has reversed its new policy on anesthesia coverage this week. the insurance company announced it would limit coverage, telling doctors it would predetermine the amount of time it would pay for a patient to be under anesthesia for surgery. the announcement was met by immediate backlash from patients and doctors. about 24 hours later, anthem reversed the decision for the patients. >> they don't have to worry now that if the surgery goes more than a certain amount of time, they could be liable for a portion of that bill. >> anthem blue cross said the new policy was to clarify the appropriateness of anesthesia. in a statement, the company shared it walked back on the decision due to the spread of misinformation. >> and now it's time for our abc seven mornings advancer our way of highlighting some things happening today in the bay area. >> first caltrans annual holiday train is returning this weekend, and they're looking for toy donations. the train features more than 70,000 lights and will stop at nine different caltrain stations between san francisco

at 545. metering lights have flipped on, but we're still seeing that friday light that we like to talk about from highway four into the city of san francisco. that drive will take you about 34 minutes. >> the los angeles times is adding an artificial intelligence powered bias meter on the paper's news articles. speaking on a podcast. the owner of the paper says the meter will allow readers to get both sides of the story. he claims major publishers have failed to adequately separate news and opinion. the union that represents l.a. times employees slammed these comments, saying its members abide by a strict set of ethics guidelines. >> one of the biggest mega millions jackpots ever will be up for grabs tonight. it's been several weeks since anyone matched all six numbers in the drawing. tonight's prize will be worth about $579 million. mega millions has produced very little luck in 2024. the jackpot

return astronauts to the moon this decade. the mission was scheduled for 2026, but it's been pushed back to mid 2027. a separate mission to fly astronauts around the moon next year will now take place mid 2026, and here's why. nasa says the capsule that will be home to the astronauts during both missions is charred and eroded from the uncrewed artemis mission in 2022. >> australian researchers are working on new life saving technology in the form of cyborg cockroaches. what the insects are being designed to help people in disaster sites where it's too dangerous to send human rescuers. the roaches are outfitted with tiny circuit boards, which can help locate survivors or potentially deliver aid. now, some are questioning the ethics of these biohybrid robots and are advocating for better regulation and oversight. i'm just taking a moment to understand what's going on here. >> i mean, in theory, disaster
