moments ago, new york city police revealing they found the backpack he was wearing in central park. tonight, the suspect still on the run and where they believe he escaped the city. here is aaron katersky leading us off. >> reporter: after a frantic three-day manhunt, the nypd believes the suspect who gunned down brian thompson has escaped new york city. last seen riding out of central park on a bike after the shooting, police say the suspect hopped into a taxi, headed to the bus station by george washington bridge and made his getaway. >> we are asking every american to look at the picture, the photo and to assist us if you know him, if his face looks familiar. please reach out to our law enforcement. >> reporter: late tonight, the nypd deployed drones and an army of officers across central park to search for the gunman's backpack. just moments ago, a source tells abc news they discovered this backpack believed to have

belonged to the suspect. police sources tell abc news investigators now believe the suspect arrived in new york november 24th, ten days before the shooting, on a greyhound bus boarding between atlanta and washington, d.c. detectives are using facial recognition technology on the only clear images of the suspect's face captured when a clerk checking him into a hostile asked to see his smile. she could compare his face to his i.d., which sources say was fake. police pulled dna from items recovered near the scene, including a cellphone, along with a smudged fingerprint on a water bottle. investigators are working to determine the motive. the words deny, defend and depose found on the shell casings. a possible reverence to ways insurance companies avoid paying medical claims. protefrsters have targeted

sentence up to 25 years. he is facing negligent homicide now. the jury of seven women and five men deliberating for four days, asking to review bystander and police video from back in may of 2023. >> i just put him out. >> he is not breathing. >> reporter: prosecutors say neely was yelling and making threats. they argue penny's hold lasted a minute after neely stopped breathing. >> he was just being -- >> he was threatening everybody. >> reporter: david, the jury was dismissed. they will continue deliberating on that lesser charge on monday. that charge carries up to four years in prison. >> david: stephanie ramos, thank you. we turn to growing concern over bird flu and the milk supply. the department of agriculture taking an extraordinary test, testing raw milk samples nationwide, not pasteurized but raw milk.

there have been human cases of bird flu in at least eight states, including two new cases in arizona just today. so far, no known cases of the infection spreading from human to human. here is steve osunsami. >> reporter: the federal government says the newly ordered tests of raw milk samples for bird flu will start in less than two weeks. they will take place at large dairy processing facilities as the usda tries to drill down which farms and herds are affected. >> this is a safeguard procedure andrew teen testing is a checkpoint for monitoring the health of the herd. >> reporter: 60 people have gotten sick from bird flu. almost all of the cases have been farm workers handling sick livestock. officials say they don't know of any person who spread it to another human. what authorities are concerned about is the potential for the disease to spread to consumers who drink raw, unpasteurized

milk. in the last few weeks, farms in california have shut down and started recalling some of their raw milk and cream products after farm officials found the bird flu virus in samples of their products. >> it's hard. but we are very adoptive and resilient. we will emerge stronger and better. >> reporter: the government underlines the milk most people drink that's been pasteurized is safe to drink and is not at risk. that's because when that milk is treated with heat, it kills the virus. authorities are encouraging people who drink raw milk to stop. >> david: we appreciate it, steve. cold from text all the was to t northeast. millions under alerts for windchills in the teens and single digits. the dangers of black ice. a fedex truck was hit by a train. no one was hurt. lee goldberg has the forecast.

>> reporter: along the great lakes, feet of snow taking a toll. outside erie, pennsylvania, a race to clear thousands of pounds of snow off a firehouse roof in danger of collapsing. >> we noticed in one corner all of a sudden the ceiling was starting to cave in. >> reporter: a similar scene playing at a high school in ohio. look behind me. the roof of the high school building partially collapsing because of the snow. you can see workers loading up the red tarp to get that snow off of the roof. the system that brought nearly a foot of snow to the northeast thursday now ushering in cold and the new danger, icy roads. multiple accidents outside syracuse, new york. overnight, a tour bus overturning. thankfully, no passengers on board. some areas are bracing for more snow and in at least 19 states, people will be dealing with bitterly cold windchills below

welcome the world back to celebrate its extraordinary rebirth. back in 2019, the devastation was nearly absolute. the charred roof left with a gaping hole when the spire crashed to the ground. the enormous hole that remains in the roof of the building of what was once the oak vault that kept this part of the roof in place. for five years, 2,000 specialists have worked night and day, carpenters, stonemasons, reviving industries of specialist craft in the biggest restoration project for a generation. we have been keeping track with regular visits to see the progress. up on the roof here. you can see the eiffel tower in the distance over there. this roof when i was last year, you could only see the timbers. now it's two-thirds covered. an international effort. a san francisco-based 3d imaging firm playing a key role.

morning. state officials are assessing the damage some homes in rio dell and the eel river valley reportedly suffered broken water lines and cracked foundations. >> del norte, humboldt and mendocino counties remain under a state of emergency. there have been no reports, though, thankfully, of any significant injuries. >> the 7.0 quake struck yesterday morning 11 miles southwest of scotia. a tsunami warning was issued for 500 miles of coastline, including the bay area, but was canceled about one hour later, and the cleanup continues in many stores that had a lot of their merchandise knocked down and shattered on as reporter cornell barnard visited businesses in humboldt county that took on some losses. >> well, 24 hours after that, 7.0 quake rocked the north coast. a lot of damage is now coming to light like this large crack which opened up here onge blue slide road in the community of rio del. crews are working to fix it. lots of other.
