celebrate after opposition forces entered the capital. >> gio: assad's private residence ransacked with furniture overturned. items strewn everywhere, and opposition fighters sitting inside this office at the presidential palace. we have the reaction right here in the u.s. beginning with abc's james longman. james, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, gio. this is one of the most extraordinary moments in the history of the middle east. bashar al assad inherited power from his father nearly 25 years ago. he has clung onto that power through years of civil war, but now a new rebel movement has managed to topple his regime in less than two weeks. history made overnight as syrian dictator bashar al assad is overthrown in a lightning move by rebel fighters. they are this morning, inside the presidential palace, walking its huge halls, celebrating amid the abandoned luxury of the assad regime. as outside jubilation spreads on

the streets of the capital for a moment few saw coming. rebels declaring victory from tv studios saying the city of damascus has been liberated. the tyrant bashar al assad has been toppled. the rebels seizing damascus almost without a fight as the military appeared to evaporate. this syrian military checkpoint left abandoned overnight. military uniforms left behind, scattered on the floor. such scenes were unthinkable less than two weeks ago when the rebels launched a sudden offensive. that snowballed and day after day, they overran key cities. assad in power for 24 years, oversaw the brutal crushing of the revolution against his regime through nearly 14 years of civil war. he was propped up by allies, iran, russia, and hezbollah. but he never completely regained the north and turkey supported the islamist rebel groups vying for power. out of the carnage, this emerged, and with assad's allies distracted by wars in ukraine

gaza and lebanon, the group appears to have taken its chance. an offshoot of al qaeda now wants to project a more moderate image. the group solidifying its status as guardians of the revolution on saturday storming the city of homs, birth place of rebellion in 2011. they released prisoners from syria's jails where they languished for years for opposing the regime. protesters chanting long live syria. down with al assad, setting fire to a poster of the syrian president. the u.s. and president biden had been acting with caution with no plans to intervene. >> assad's backers, iran, russia, and hezbollah, have all been weakened and distracted and so he has not had the support from these three actors he has been expected to be able to count on and has been left basically naked. >> reporter: now i have been speaking to many of the syrians i've met over the last 13 years. they are overjoyed at what happened.

millions have been displaced, they're looking forward to going home now. the issue now is the future is far from certain. >> gio: so many questions, and i know you'll stay on top of it, james. thank you so much for your reporting. whit? >> whit: all right, gio. let's get more now on what this could mean for the hundreds of u.s. troops now in syria and how the biden administration is monitoring these fast-moving developments. abc's white house correspondent maryalice parks joins now with the latest. maryalice, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. the white house is closely monitoring these events. i pressed them overnight for details about the whereabouts of syria's dictator, bashar al assad, but they have not confirmed exactly what they know at this point. one defense official telling us though that the u.s. mission in syria remains unchanged. there are about 900 american troops in syria in the far eastern part of the country focused on fighting and containing isis. now national security jake sullivan said yesterday that isis will try to take advantage of this chaotic moment. stopping them is the u.s. priority. now just last week, the u.s. conducted air strikes in syria after u.s. troops were targeted

likely by another group. the situation on the ground with so many competing factions is just incredibly complicated. now as for this primary rebel group that took the capital, the white house saying they saw those preparations coming, but the speed of the takeover caught everyone by surprise. now jake sullivan said yes, iran, russia, hezbollah who had propped up assad had been weakened, but also for decades, the syrian people have been fed up by assad's brutal regime. now president-elect trump overnight posting on social media that the u.s. should not get involved, but there are big questions going forward about how the u.s. will interact with this new rebel group and how they will make sure there is not a humanitarian catastrophe. whit? >> whit: and as you noted, all the different factions with different interests in that country. maryalice parks for us, thank you so much. and tune into "this week" later on this morning. martha raddatz speaks with retired centcom commander frank mckenzie about this situation. >> janai: now to the manhunt for the suspected killer of the unitedhealthcare ceo brian

thompson, who was gunned down on a manhattan sidewalk. nypd investigators gathering more evidence every day since the killing and this weekend, searching a pond in central park. aaron katersky joins us live with the very latest. aaron, good morning. we just got new pictures from nypd also this morning. >> reporter: and those images are important because it's believed to be the image of the shooter just after the shooting getting into a taxi. we'll show you those in a second. this is now a nationwide manhunt. the nypd's fielding hundreds of tips. the suspected shooter has not been identified yet. though he left behind a tantalizing clue. this morning, the hunt for the killer of unitedhealthcare chief, brian thompson, enters a fifth day. >> the net is tightening, and we're going to bring this person to justice. >> reporter: overnight, the nypd releasing these new images of the suspect showing him getting into a taxi. nypd dive teams searching the boat pond in central park looking for evidence including the murder weapon and the

bicycle the suspect was seen pedaling. recovering what they think is the suspect's backpack. they took it directly to the nypd forensic lab for examination, and sources tell abc news it contained a jacket and monopoly money. >> it is important to have a backpack because you need to be able to pull off some genetic or forensic material like maybe dna. >> reporter: the suspect left the shooting scene on foot and then was seen entering central park on a bike. he exited the park eight minutes later and was seen here pedaling on west 85th street. by 7:00 a.m., police say the suspect had ditched a bike and hailed a taxi. by 7:30, 45 minutes after the shooting, the suspect was gone. police say they saw him on video near the bus station by the george washington bridge where they believe he boarded a bus and left the city. the fbi is now joining the search and offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of this man seen smiling at a hostel on manhattan's upper west side. police say he he entered on a bus that

originated in atlanta. they don't know where he boarded but say he arrived just after 10:00 p.m. november 24th, ten days before the shooting. boarded. wherever he went, police say he paid with cash and except for that one time, made sure a mask covered his face. investigators have not determined a motive. police say nothing so far indicates the shooting had anything to do with the personal life of brian thompson, a father of two going through a divorce. investigators are focused on clues that suggest a disgruntled employee or angry client of unitedhealthcare. the words deny, defend, and depose were written in sharpie on shell casings found at the scene echoing this book about the insurance industry's failure to pay certain claims. protesters have targeted unitedhealthcare at its headquarters in minnesota calling out thompson's $10 million pay package. his death has unleashed frustration on social media where the suspect has been venerated. >> brian thompson may not have

personally been the target, but he represented the system. >> reporter: nypd officials believe they have made significant progress now closing in on the suspect. still though, no official identification has been made, guys. >> janai: and aaron, that point you were making at the end of your piece about the reaction by many people, because of what brian thompson represented has been fascinating to see, scary at some points. what are we learning about the contents of the backpack? >> so the backpack contained a tommy hilfiger jacket and monopoly money. seems like he may have been toying with investigators or intended for police to find the backpack, but they handled it very carefully because never mind what's on the inside. they wanted to make sure there was -- they could get some dna perhaps off the outside. so they took it up with an excavator. human hands never touched it and it went straight to a lab for analysis. >> whit: any new information about the gun itself, and what do we know about why nypd detectives have gone to atlanta? >> yeah. whit, they have been getting a lot of tips coming in from

atlanta probably because the bus that the suspect was believed to have taken him into new york city originated there, and the nypd detectives wanted to be on the ground to help atlanta police follow up. the gun itself is a rather unique 9-millimeter pistol. they're investigating whether it's used on farms and ranches to put down an animal because it can fire quietly. but it is bolt action. the magazine is in the grip and you have to cycle it manually, and he did seem to have some proficiency with the gun. >> gio: still no i.d.? >> still no identification. they want to believe they're close. >> gio: that's unbelievable. aaron katersky, thank you so much. we go overseas to the great celebration in paris of the world famous notre dame cathedral, five years of a fire nearly destroyed it. the house of worship has once again opened its doors and abc's tom soufi burridge is in paris with more on this. tom, good morning. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, gio. the gray, damp weather here in

paris this morning doesn't reflect the mood because notre dame is well and truly back up and running. we had prince william and president-elect trump here for the opening ceremony last night, and this morning, the first mass inside notre dame, the first mass in more than five years. ♪ this morning, thousands gathering inside the hallowed halls of the notre dame cathedral for the first time in almost half a decade. an invitation mass five years in the making. notre dame's 8,000-pipe organ once again filling its walls with music. at the ceremony last night, the archbishop of paris knocking on the doors of the cathedral before they swung open and erupted in song symbolizing the reopening of one of the most sacred spaces in christiandom. president macron paying tribute to the firefighters who risked their lives to save the nearly 900-year-old landmark.

the firefighters getting a standing ovation. the reopening ceremony bringing in a who's who of celebrities and world leaders including prince william, first lady jill biden, president-elect donald trump, and trump supporter, elon musk. pharrell williams performing outside notre dame. this inspiring revival happening years after that tragic fire in 2019. the flames tearing through the church. the spire collapsing as onlookers watched helplessly below in what would become europe's biggest restoration project in a generation. more than 2,000 artisans banding together to help bring this parisian icon back to life in its traditional style. can you give us an idea of how much this has cost so far? >> we have invested 700 million euros. >> reporter: janai, i don't know whether you can hear, but you can hear the bells ringing out of notre dame. that's an incredible thing to hear because they haven't been

a lot of big matchups today, and first let's get to -- so we got the lions, the vikings, the packers. they're all holding three of the top four records in the nfc. just how good is the nfc north right now? >> well, if you do the math, this division alone is 35-15. so they are the best division in football right now. three of those teams are obviously making the playoffs. you talked about them, the lions, the packers, you know, they're going to make the playoffs and, you know, this is a really competitive division. green bay lost to them last week. so all these teams are going to win ten or more games. we already know that. the bears are in that division as well. they're still trying to improve. they got a young quarterback that's going to be pretty good though. this is the best division in football. i think at the end, in the nfc championship game, i'm going to say it right now. i think it's detroit and the philadelphia eagles. >> janai: all right. called it here. >> whit: write that down, coach. hold you to it.

>> janai: coach, the chiefs and the chargers meet in the afc -- in an afc showdown tonight. how does l.a. stack up against the 11-1 chiefs? >> well, they stack up pretty good on the defensive side of it. the chargers have the best defense in football -- scoring defense only allowing 16 points a game. they can play really good defense. they did last week against atlanta, holding atlanta to 13 points. i think it's in arrowhead. very difficult to beat the chiefs in arrowhead. this is playoff time. kansas city knows that. they're running out of games. they're trying to get tuned up for the playoffs, and that guy right there that just threw the ball, patrick mahomes, i know this. if he has the ball at the end, bank on it. he's taking them down there for a score and they generally win. i'm going with the chiefs. >> whit: 49er fans definitely know that. we're well aware. thanks, coach. >> gio: i love when coach says bank on it. let's see how you banked on the previous games. this is our who's with herm scoreboard. whit's got 11. janai's got nine. i've got four.

sierra. we may be paying more to cross bay area bridges. a decision will be made this week at a hearing on wednesday. the bay area toll authority is considering a toll increase to be phased out over five years. it would start at $8.50 and add $0.50 each year. it would also change the carpool lane policy, establishing a uniform three person requirement at all seven bridges that would be for half price tolls during weekday commute periods. if approved, the changes would take effect january first of 2026. all right, let's talk about your milk. the u.s. department of agriculture says it will start testing milk for bird flu beginning on december 16th. dairy farms and processors nationwide must provide unpasteurized milk for testing if the feds request it. the testing will begin in california. colorado, michigan, mississippi, oregon and pennsylvania. marin county is currently investigating a possible case of bird flu. the virus was first detected in dairy cows back in march and has
