she's going to tell us all about it. >> whit: got all the friendship bracelets. first the holidays are fast approaching. the first shipping deadline is coming up later this week. we'll tell you what you need to know to get your packages where they need to go in time without paying more than you have to. >> george: we have a lot of news to get to. we're going to begin with the man hunt for the suspect in the murder of brian thompson. killer is still on the loose. this morning images show the man minutes after the shooting. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky starts us off. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, george. detectives are optimistic they're closing in, but heading into a sixth day of searching, they still do not have an identity of the suspect or anyone in custody. this morning the nypd is hoping someone recognizes these latest images of the suspect. the suspect seen getting into a

taxi 20 minutes after the shooting, appearing to look at the camera. by then he had ditched the bike he was spotted riding into and out of central park, where nypd divers spent the weekend searching a pond for clues. police have yet to recover the bike or the murder weapon. the pond is near the spot where officers found what they think is the suspect's backpack. it contained a tommy hilfiger jacket and monopoly money. detectives are working to determine whether the play money was meant as some sort of statement. >> it's some kind of statement. a messaging that has to be figured out. that's not really what the immediate need is. it is to get him arrested. the motive, we'll figure that out later as we go on. >> reporter: hundreds of tips are pouring in, and thousands of police officers are cycling through a manhunt that is now nationwide. >> the amount of detective work it took to put the pieces together, we feel comfortable we're getting closer and closer.

>> reporter: the police built a timeline that begins ten days prior to the shooting, november 24th when they say the suspect arrived in new york by bus just after 10 p.m. he immediately took a taxi to the scene of the crime. he took another taxi to a hostel on the upper west side where he checked in using a fake i.d., paid in cash and was spotted on a security camera without his mask. the images shared widely by police. on december 4th, police say the suspect is seen leaving the hostel at 5:30 a.m. and arriving at the hilton 11 minutes later. he was seen walking nearby, ordering starbucks then waiting for thompson, who crossed 6th avenue at 6:44 a.m. 45 minutes later, police say the suspect was seen at the bus station by the george washington bridge and not seen since. back at the murder scene, police found the words deny, defend, depose written in sharpie on shell casings. thompson's murder ignited online anger at the health insurance industry. some on social media posting vicious sarcasm or indifference toward the death of brian thompson. police have not established a

motive, but they say they found no evidence the killing had anything to do with thompson's personal life. united healthcare is declining to answer questions posed by abc news, including whether the company has offered to contribute to the reward money for information leading to an arrest, robin. >> robin: what are police saying about the gun that was apparently used in the shooting? seems very unusual. >> it is a distinctive weapon. they think it may be a veterinary type weapon used on farms to put down an animal. it can fire a quiet shot with that long barrel. they don't think it had a separate silencer. the magazine is in the grip, bolt action so it has to be manually cycled. he did show proficiency with the they're still looking for it. >> george: how about the messages on the shell casings and monopoly money. >> they are not sure if it is a message. it is a tantalizing clue. they are all open to the possibility that all those items may have been planted as a ruse. >> robin: aaron, thank you very much for your reporting. we know you are staying on it.

thank you. overseas to the collapse of the asad regime in syria. rebels seized the presidential palace after they launched a lightning offense two weeks ago. president asad fled the capital over the weekend and has been granted asylum by russian president putin. asad and his family have ruled the country in a brutal dictatorship in half a century and engaged in a bloody civil war the past 14 years backed by russia, iran and hezbollah. the question now, so what happens next? the u.s. has some 900 troops stationed in the country right now, as american forces carried out air strikes on isis positions this weekend. we're gonna talk with national security adviser jake sullivan in just a moment. but first chief international correspondent james longman is at the syrian border for us. james, tell us what you're seeing right now. >> reporter: robin, it's a very tense situation right now. let me show you around here. we've got thousands of people streaming out of syria, desperate to leave the country because they're not sure what the change means for them.

the lebanese army has put a barrier up there, stopping people from coming out. meantime, you are seeing all these cars and it streams all the way down there, of people going into syria. this is the chaos that revolution brings. one of the world's most oppressive regimes brought down in days. bashar al-assad's violent dictator ship made millions of syrians homeless. this morning he is on the run, overthrown by rebel fighters in lightning speed. the regime collapsing in just 11 days, his people now discovering the massive wealth kept from them at his presidential palace in the capital damascus. rebels taking over state television saying the city of damascus has been liberated the tyrant has been toppled. and this morning entering syria i met border guards. why are people worried? he said isis might be involved. he said there's nothing to worry about.

temples of the assad family defaced and destroyed. cheers and gun fire filling the air, celebration and relief. this man was 17 when he left syria. 29 today. he's going home and he can't stop smiling. how are you feeling, i ask him? i'm so happy, he said. mixed feelings, because i've missed so much, my studies, work. but i'm happy, he says. discoveries now being made. don't be afraid, says this woman, found in an under ground prison. we find a child alongside her. russia's foreign ministry announcing assad's resignation and moscow he has fled with his family. bashar assad inherited power from his father. a london educated eye doctor he was the respectable face of a new syria world leaders rushed to work with. vogue even called his glamorous wife a rose in the desert.

soon as he was challenged, his father's son emerged. he crushed the 2011 protest movement, killing hundreds of thousands. then president obama said use of chemical weapons would be a red line, but assad crossed it. the chaos allowed isis to seize territory and launch attacks against the west. iran, hezbollah and russia helped assad hold on. wars in gaza, lebanon and ukraine meant they couldn't save him now. a rebel group emerged from the chaos of the civil war. its leader is this man, a former al qaeda member who turned against them and is promising a more moderate image, promising a turning point for the region. president biden among those praising this moment as an opportunity for syria independence, but one fraught with danger. >> it's a moment, historic opportunity, for the long suffering people of syria to build a better future for their proud country. it is also a moment of risk and uncertainty. >> reporter: now, syrians are fast discovering the truth of

the assad regime. under ground prisons full of women and children, instruments of torture, the wealth he accumulated. but as they try to make history, the future is really uncertain. george? >> george: it is. let's bring in jake sullivan for more on this. we heard the president say this is a moment of opportunity and moment of risk. bottom line, is it good for the united states and the world? >> well, it's good for the united states and the world that a murderous dictator whose family has ruled syria with an iron fist for half a century is gone. assad was the author of the killing of hundreds of thousands of people. the oppression of religious and ethnic minorities as well. and so from our perspective, it is good that he is gone. as president biden said, there is risk and uncertainty about what comes next. there's an opportunity to build something better in syria. but there is concern that terrorists, jihadists and other people who do not have the united states' best interest at heart, to say the least, could take advantage of this. we are vigilant, taking action to deal with that.

we're prepared to work with anyone in syria who wants a stable inclusive democratic future for that country. that's what we intend to drive, george. >> george: you talked about the action the united states is taking. 75 air strikes against isis targets inside syria. what is the top u.s. priority right now? >> well, number one priority, obviously, is to protect united states of america from the resurgence of a terror threat from syria. that means holding isis down. don't let them take advantage of this. then there's the priority of making sure our friends in the region are stable. israel, jordan, iraq, lebanon. that these countries do not suffer from any kind of violent spillover effects from what's happening in syria. then it is to support the syrian people as they try to build a better future for their country. these are the steps that we are going to take, we have started taking. we'll do it in concert with our friends in the region. >> george: what do we know about how assad escaped to moscow and

what will happen to him next? >> we don't know the circumstances of his departure, how he fled his country, how he got on a plane and got to moscow. what we do know is his backers, iran, russia and hezbollah, couldn't come to his aid because they have been weakened and exposed because of conflicts happening elsewhere. russia weakened and exposed because of ukraine. iran weakened because they made the grave mistake of trying to attack israel after october 7th. the u.s. stood up and supported israel, stood up in support of ukraine. the result is, asad was basically naked and alone without friends and had to flee. >> george: he's got one friend in moscow. can he be held accountable for his actions? >> well, lot of that's gonna turn on russia explaining exactly why it is that they are harboring a murderous dictator. they offered him asylum, asylum from the syrian people who he has brutalized and murdered over the course of a long time. so that question is best directed towards moscow.

what we are going to do is support the syrian people as they try to turn the page on assad and build a better future. >> george: what do we know about the american journalist who was kidnapped in syria 12 years ago? austin tice. >> as president biden said in his remarks yesterday, this is a top priority for us, to find austin tice. to locate the prison where he may be held, get him home safely to his family. we have offered a reward to anyone who can provide information. we are talking through the turks and others to people on the ground in syria to say, help us with this. help us get austin tice home. we don't know exactly where he's located, but we do know we are not going to rest until we get him home to his family. >> george: jake sullivan, thank you very much. whit? >> whit: now the bombshell accusation against jay-z. a woman claiming he joined sean diddy combs in sexually assaulting her when she was just 13 years old. jay-z denying the accusation. abc news live anchor linsey

davis is here with more. linsey, good morning. >> linsey: this lawsuit named diddy as a defendant but was refiled yesterday and also names jay-z. but he is coming out swinging, saying in a statement that the allegations are so heinous in nature that he employed a lawyer to file a criminal complaint not a civil one adding whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away. new allegations this morning levelled against rapper jay-z also known as sean carter accusing him of sexually assaulting a then 13-year-old girl with sean diddy combs after the vma's in 2000. the new amended civil lawsuit originally filed by a jane doe in october identified celebrity a as jay-z, claiming he and diddy drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl at an after party and that another celebrity stood by and watched as combs and carter took turns assaulting the minor. combs and jay-z both attended the award show.

jay-z, who was 31 at the time, is now a multiplatinum grammy winner and business mogul. he's reached the highest place of the rap industry. ♪ jay-z denying the allegations writing this is a blackmail attempt, taking direct aim at the plaintiffs attorney saying what he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle, going on to say the claims are idiotic. noting the impact this has had on his life, beyonce and their three children. my wife and i will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims. jay-z challenges busby to change the civil lawsuit to a criminal complaint. busby is standing his ground writing, i won't be bullied or intimidated. people will see through this effort to discredit me and my clients and the truth will be revealed. i also won't allow anyone to scare my clients into silence.

colin farrell was a passionate and private award winning actor whose life changed with the birth of his first child. he is now among the estimated 1.3 million young adults in the u.s. living with a developmental disability. for parents offering support, it can be challenging. i know that firsthand. so does farrell, who's become a vocal advocate not just for his son james, but for all families who are dealing with differences. golden globe winning actor colin farrell is front and center as an ambassador for people living with disabilities. we caught up in chicago when farrell's foundation was hosting a gala. >> we have to help people understand how dire the situation is for so many. >> reporter: opening up about his 21-year-old son james, who has a genetic disorder. you are braving the chicago weather not for a film role but for a cause that is near and dear.

how much does it mean to you? >> it means a lot to me. my son means a lot to me. what we're trying to do is raise awareness. >> reporter: james was diagnosed just before his third birthday. the rare disorder affecting 1 in 12,000 to 20,000 people, most with significant developmental delays, problems walking, talking or caring for themselves. >> the spectrum is pretty broad for our children who have angelman's syndrome. some have words. james is nonverbal. some can move around perfectly. james is not one of those, but he is ambulatory. >> you describe him as your beautiful boy who has differences. >> yeah. he's great fun. he's cheeky. he's bold. he's worked hard all his life. he has been doing occupational therapy, special needs exercises since the time he was 3. >> you have james, your oldest. you have henry. >> yeah. >> how do you balance the two? >> on a unicycle, bowling pins.

>> as a successful actor, farrell said he's for nate with the care for his son. >> we have been able to provide a certain amount of support that very few families can provide. that is not lost on me at all. i don't think he understands distractions. i don't believe james understands the concept of time. or calendar dates. james, in many ways, exists in a state of grace. he is in the forever now. it's really quite amazing. >> james is 21. on one hand, he's a young adult. but on the other hand, he's a young adult with a disability. but in this world though of disabilities, when a child turns the 1. >> there's no support system as far as therapies, care. that's when parents are just like, what do i do now? they are just in the dark, begging for support and help. they are subsisting, trying to keep their life together.
