man detained by police for the murder of the ceo of unitedhealthcare. >> he was spotted at a mcdonald's in pennsylvania. and as we've discovered, he has bay area ties. reporter anthony johnson from our sister station in new york has the latest. >> the suspect has been in custody since about 930 this morning. he traveled some 230 miles from new york city to altoona, pennsylvania. he was in a local mcdonald's when a worker recognized him and called worker police. they came in and took the suspect into custody. 26 year old luigi mangione sits in a jail cell in altoona, pennsylvania, arrested on gun charges, and cops believe he is the man seen in video shooting and killing unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. >> and officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder. they also recovered clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by our wanted individual. also

recovered was a fraudulent new jersey id matching the i.d. our suspect used to check into his new york city hostel before the shooting incident. >> so who is luigi mangione? with each passing hour, we're learning more about him. he is 26 years old. he attended the university of pennsylvania, where he majored in computer science. when he was taken into custody, police say he was carrying a three page handwritten document that speaks to both his mindset and a potential motive in the murder. >> we don't think that there's any specific threats to other people mentioned in that document, but it does seem that he has some some ill will toward corporate america. >> in the hours before today's arrest, new video of the suspect lying in wait and then following thompson as he walked in midtown. divers were also back in central park looking for clues, but it was a mcdonald's employee here in central

pennsylvania who helped break the case wide open. >> luckily, a citizen in pennsylvania recognized our subject and called local law enforcement members of the altoona police department responded to the call, and based on their investigation, they notified the nypd late this afternoon, new york city cops arrived in altoona and are now preparing to interview mangione. >> an extradition hearing was taking place here for the suspect. if he waives extradition, he'll be back on his way to new york city to face murder charges. in altoona, pennsylvania, anthony johnson, abc seven news. >> and the suspected shooter, luigi mangione, has ties here to the bay area. >> he does. an i-team reporter, dan noyes, has been looking into his background and is here with what he has learned about this guy. >> dan and corina luigi mangione did very well in academics from an elite high school in baltimore to a bachelor's and master's degree in pennsylvania. the ivy league. he also worked as a head counselor at stanford in 2019, before heading off to a

job in computer programing. much of the day for law enforcement and for us has been delving into the background of the 26 yearnto old suspected killer, luigi mangione. >> he was born and raised in maryland. we know he has taught. he has ties to san francisco, california, and his last known address was honolulu, hawaii. he has no prior arrest. history. in new york. >> mangione has an ample online presence. he grew up in baltimore, graduated from the exclusive all boys high school gilman as 2016 valedictorian. >> luigi nicolas mangione. >> nothing out of the ordinary as he spoke at a founders day celebration. >> it's been an incredible journey and i simply can't imagine the last few years with any other group of guys. >> gilman sent us a statement today. luigi mangione suspected involvement in this case is deeply distressing. news on top of an already awful situation. our hearts go out to everyone affected. mangione went on to the university of pennsylvania for bachelor's and master's

degrees in engineering and computer science, and for four months in the summer of 2019. stanford university confirms. mangione worked there as a head counselor in the pre-collegiate studies program. writing on his linkedin that he taught artificial intelligence to gifted high school students. his facebook page included several photos of him enjoying the sights around the bay area since 2020. mangione wrote that he worked at truecar, the used car app based out of santa monica, but the company tells me he stopped working there in 2023. there are clues on his social media that he may have suffered a catastrophic medical emergenc. an x ray of a spine with four screws on his x or twitter page, mangione carried other potential evidence when arrested. a ghost gun, a fake id. >> he's also in possession of several items that we believe will connect him to this incident. >> police also found a two page document when they detained mangione, and cnn is reporting

francisco, deliberations continue in a high profile murder case here. nima momeni is accused of killing cash app founder bob lee back in april of last year. momeni testified he acted in self defense. he faces first degree murder charges, but jurors can potentially consider lesser charges, including second degree murder or voluntary or involuntary manslaughter. a 57 year old redwood city man is in custody accused of murdering his wife. police say the man called the department from his home on seventh avenue at 1045 last night, saying he stabbed his wife to death. officers arrived and found a victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. attempts to revive her failed. the suspect surrendered peacefully. police say a large number of witnesses was there in the home at the time. >> a preliminary magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near lake tahoe just after 3 p.m. this afternoon. the epicenter was yerington, nevada. that's just east of carson city. the usgs has reports from

glass broken along this corridor. the canopies are part of a seven year, $64 million project to improve the rider experience. we witnessed this one being installed monday afternoon. >> we just noticed as soon as any canopy comes up, something happens to graffiti or someone hits it. >> while many people i spoke with thought there had been new vandalism since october, such as this door at davis and market. when i reached out to bart, a spokesperson told me there has been, quote, no evidence of new vandalism. recently, when i inquired about why many of the broken panes hadn't been fixed. no response. >> it just seems like nothing's being done about it. >> if it just continues to happen, if they do put money into it, is it just going to get shattered again? is this a waste of money? >> i reached out to the general manager of east bay glass, whom i interviewed in 2023, about the rising inquiries for bulletproof glass. he said cost can definitely be a determining factor. >> only about $100 to $120 per square foot. there's glass that it can go all the way up to $350 a square foot. that is not what the installation. no.

lawmakers are taking aim at social media's impact on children. bonta unveiled a bill by portola valley assembly member rebecca bauer today in san francisco. the legislation would require social media to come with warning labels about the mental health risks associated with their platforms. the attorney general says companies have long known the dangers of their platforms, but have refused to act. >> they've had ample time to make the right choice. they've had time to address the devastating toll their products are having on our families. time

is up. it's time we stepped in and demanded change. >> if signed into law, social media companies would have to show all users, regardless of how old they are. a black box warning when they first log on, and once a week after that. google says it has cracked a pivotal quantum computing challenge with the use of a new chip. listen to this. it solves a computing math problem in five minutes, which would have taken a classic computer more time than the history of the universe. google did not get any commercial gain from this development, but there is promise it will solve problems in medicine, ai, and battery chemistry as well. >> the environmental. the environmental protection agency is banning two cancer causing dry cleaning chemicals from homes and workplaces. trichloroethylene, known as tce, is often used in spot removers, cleaners, lubricants, and glue. it can damage the nervous and immune systems and can cause

liver, kidney, and blood cancer. the other is perchloroethylene, known as perc, specifically for dry cleaning and automotive care products is what it's used for. it can cause liver, kidney, brain, and testicular cancer. a warning is out today about extreme fire danger in southern california. the national weather service issued a red flag warning from today through wednesday morning. the worst conditions are forecast for los angeles and ventura counties tonight into tomorrow, with wind gusts between 60 to 80 miles an hour. the conditions are similar to those that fanned the mountain fire that burned 20,000 acres and destroyed 240 structures in ventura county last month. >> those winds are ferocious here. up in the bay area. we've had some rain, but a nice long, dry spell. but rain is returning. >> that's right. and sandhya patel is here to give us more details on that. sandhya. >> yeah, and karina and dan, let's talk about the red flag warning for southern california. first, and then we'll talk about our weather. and yes, the wet weather is returning. red

flag warning for parts of southern california going until 6 p.m. wednesday evening. they also have a wind advisory until noon. and as you will notice, it's just parts of southern california. but the winds are gusting places like warm springs down south, gusting to 40 miles an hour. the santa ana winds have started to develop the sustained winds, though right now 14 palm springs. as we check out the setup, it's high pressure that has been building in behind a departing low. and so that wind flow between the two creating those gusty offshore winds, they're much lighter here in the bay area. but the oakland hills reporting 24 miles an hour northeasterly, 21 in spring valley, the rain that we had last month was so much that it helped to moisten our fuels down south. unfortunately, critically dry fuels low humidity, creating that extreme fire danger there. but look at what the winds did to our bay area. air quality. it is good right now as a result of mixing out of the atmosphere. blue skies right now from golden gate bridge, camera city is at 62 degrees

had a face mask on. that male was asked to remove his face mask, and officers immediately recognized him as a suspect in the new york city shooting. that male was asked for a form of identification. he then provided a fake identification card out of new jersey. after a brief investigation, it was determined that the id provided was in fact a fake id, and he was subsequently arrested for a forgery charge. >> we've learned that mangione has bay area ties. he worked as a head counselor at stanford in 2019, before heading off to a job in computer programing. mangione has been charged with five criminal counts, including carrying a gun without a license, fgery, falsely identifying himself toy authorities, and possessing instruments of crime. he did not enter a plea. no word yet on when he might be transferred to new york to face charges there.
