>> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us tonight. the man accused of killing united health care ceo brian thompson is in jail in pennsylvania, waiting to be sent to new york. luigi mangione was charged with second degree murder. >> literally just hours ago, the one time stanford employee is accused of killing thompson. last wednesday morning, waiting outside a manhattan hotel where united health care was set to have a conference after the shooting, mangione disappeared, leaving a trail of evidence through new york city, including being caught on multiple security cameras. >> those images are ultimately what led a worker at a pennsylvania mcdonald's to call police, leading to mangione's arrest today. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone is here with new information from a friend and a former classmate who says j.r. there were signs months ago that something was wrong. >> exactly. dan, imagine you're listening to your valedictorian, one of the smartest in your class. speak. one day, eight years later, that person is charged with second degree murder. that's what we're dealing with tonight. investigators in multiple states

are busy building their case against this murder suspect. this is all new video showing luigi mangione being escorted into court monday night in central pennsylvania. the manhattan district attorney's office in new york city confirms that mangione has been charged with second degree murder in the death of united health care ceo brian thompson. that's in addition to the charges he faces in pennsylvania, where he was arrested. legal analyst stephen clark says new york prosecutors will have a tactical advantage in this case. >> that extradition process to bring him back to new york can give them the time to link his dna and fingerprints to the evidence they found at the scene in new york. >> those who know mangone reacted to his arrest. >> beyond shocked. it's unimaginable. >> r.j. martin is a friend and former roommate of mangione. martin lived with the murder suspect in a co-living space in hawaii in recent years. he doesn't know what may have gone

wrong, but is well aware of mangione's back problems and a recent surgery that mangione had. >> i knew he was going to have a surgery, so earlier this year i checked in with him. he confirmed that he had had surgery and he sent me the x-rays. it looked heinous with just giant screws going into his spine. >> a high school acquaintance of mangione, who didn't want to be identified, said he knew something wasn't right with the ivy league scholar several months ago saying, quote, the only time he really came back into my life was around six months ago. i had heard that his family members were reaching out to different classmates of mine, and they were inquiring about his whereabouts. online, there are actually thousands of comments in support of mangione, who worked at stanford as a head program counselor back in 2019. some online saying he didn't do it. others talking negatively about corporate america in a very disturbing way. >> this young man has become almost a folk hero online for the way he conducted this homicide. and i think

prosecutors want to send the message that you may have a grievance with the health care industry or corporate america, but you cannot do this type of act. >> mangione's family issued a statement monday saying they are, quote, shocked and devastated by luigi's arrest. end quote, law enforcement sources tell abc news they found mangione with writings saying, quote, these parasites had it coming and i do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done with that, said, clark tells me the defense will likely take a long look at his mental state. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> no doubt. all right. j.r. thanks very much. turning to our abc seven news at 11 focusing on a major development for san francisco schools happening tomorrow. san francisco unified leaders are set to present their plan to close a huge budget gap. the school closures that led to the superintendent ouster this fall are off the table, at least for the time being. now. tomorrow, the district is

talking teacher layoffs, possibly cutting more than 500 jobs across the district. they're offering supplemental early retirement packages to entice many people to leave on their own. it will include 60% of their current salary. for those who've been with the district longer than five years, and they're boosting their transitional kindergarten enrollment. >> everyone wants us to succeed, and everyone wants to help and so it gives me so much hope that we can and we will get through all of this, because in two years time, we will have a school district that will be standing solidly on our own two feet, making our own decisions for the best of our students. >> the clock is ticking for sfusd to get a balanced budget plan to the state by december 15th, as they are still at risk of a full state takeover. >> let's turn now to the accuweather forecast with a

chilly night ahead. a frost advisory kicks in in the next hour. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at the cold conditions. sandhya. >> yeah, tonight is a night where you need to bundle up or definitely turn up the heat because you're going to feel that chill ahead from our pier 39 camera. a beautiful view as we look towards the golden gate bridge. here's a look at the temperatures right now 35 already in sonoma, 36 santa rosa down to 39 degrees in livermore. you're going to feel the chill by morning. frost advisory starts at midnight, runs until 8 a.m. all areas shaded in blue. temperatures as low as 32 degrees means frost will form. now look at the bigger picture. over the next seven days, we have multiple chances of rain, as we do have some storms coming our way. this is live doppler seven. the first in the series gets here wednesday night and as we time it out for you, you will notice that rain moving in at 7 p.m. wednesday in the north bay by 10 p.m. it is spreading across the entire bay area. it will be light to moderate in intensity, but that's not the

only storm i'm tracking. i'll be back with one that is going to be quite soggy. the details coming right up. >> all right. thank you sandhya. now to developing news out of nevada's capital city. rattled by an earthquake that was felt all the way in the bay area. the magnitude 5.8 quake hit just after three today. just east of carson city. people reported feeling the quake all the way in san francisco and on the peninsula, a tv station in reno caught the shaking on camera. you see it there, sending those holiday lights swinging. no major damage or injuries have been reported. more than a dozen smaller aftershocks have happened, so far. >> embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus is refusing to testify before the board of supervisors tomorrow as they try to pressure her to step down, corpus lawyers say county supervisors asked her to testify under oath at a meeting tomorrow. she says she won't do it because some of the supervisors have already decided against her. corpus is facing allegations of misconduct and corruption, which she denies.

the abc seven news i-team has learned that the county offered corpus $1 million to resign, and she refused. in march, voters will decide whether to give the board of supervisors the power to fire the elected sheriff. >> uc santa cruz is being sued by the people who were hurt in a bus crash on campus. nearly a year ago. three of the six people who were injured are seeking damages. one alleges the driver who died had been speeding and braking hard the entire trip. ucsd responded saying, quote, this bus crash was a tragic and heartbreaking moment for our uc santa cruz community. we continue to mourn the death of our bus driver and extend our sympathy to the students who were on the bus. to date, we have not been served thousands of striking san francisco hotel workers are trying to discourage people from going to a big health care conference next month. >> it's set to be held at the westin saint francis hotel. a union spokesperson says the hotels are not being transparent about what kind of experience attendees will have in a hotel on strike. hotel owners have not

commented on the upcoming conferences, but have said they are committed to negotiating a fair contract after a battle with a new landlord. >> a restaurant on fillmore street has reached a deal to stay. la mediterranee and the upper fillmore revitalization project agreed on a multi year lease extension. it's one of several park heights businesses that was being forced out. a billionaire venture capitalist has brought has bought several of the buildings in this area since the start of the year, tarnished by a decades old sushi bar did end up closing its doors. >> as you may have noticed, some grocery stores in the bay area are running short on eggs and dairy products as the bird flu outbreak gets even worse. between the empty shelves and the rising prices, shoppers and stores are getting frustrated, leading to signs like this one. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez puts the problem into context. >> eggs are once again hard to find on certain bay area store shelves. we went to two grocery stores in san jose. one put a

sign up that said chickens on strike. >> what's going on? it was fully empty, and it's not the first time. i was actually here maybe a couple of weeks ago. >> the usda is tracking rising cases of avian influenza in the last 30 days. commercial flocks throughout the u.s. have confirmed bird flu. according to their map, california has the highest number of flocks impacted. the cdc reported more than 111 million birds have been affected since the outbreak in 2022. >> we are already paying like six, maybe $7 a carton. >> experts say the impact is making eggs more expensive. >> last year i was paying about 30 odd 40, 30, $40 a week for my groceries. now i'm paying more than $100. >> the bird flu was also detected in a batch of raw milk from a farm in the central valley. it triggered a voluntary recall impacting bay area stores. on friday, the usda ordered nationwide testing of raw or unpasteurized milk.

court said the ban could go forward. the law would ban tiktok nationwide in mid january unless the company finds a new owner that is not connected to china. the department of justice is urging the court to let the ban stand. tiktok said in a court filing that an emergency pause would also give the incoming trump administration time to decide whether it wants a different approach. the bay area is at the center of the future of artificial intelligence, and today one of the biggest players announced a new advancement. san francisco based openai released an ai model that generates video. the program, called sora, was first rolled out in february to safety testers. now people are paying for chatgpt will have access to it. users give it text or a still image, and the tool spits out a video up to 20s long. openai says it will limit the ability to upload images of people, at first citing concerns about the tool being used to create inappropriate sexual content. >> new developments in a strange story out of monterey county.

deputies there say they can't verify a hikers claims that someone tied her to a tree and left her there for hours last week. the sheriff's office announced it was searching for a suspect after a woman said that a man tied her to a tree in the pebble beach area. the woman said the man had followed her but did not hurt her or rob her. investigators say they found a witness who did not back up the hikers account. they say an extensive search of the area also did not turn up a suspect. >> big plans for the future of the former chevron hq in san ramon. a developer is sharing a project to build 2500 homes there. it will be called orchards neighborhood, made up of three districts with different types of homes that will include apartments, townhomes, multi-family and single family homes. some will be mixed use to include some ground floor retail and commercial space to be used as a city center. they've also worked parks and open spaces into that design. >> all right. as part of our effort to build a better bay area, we're always happy, of

course, to highlight our neighbors making a difference. so tonight in this season of giving, we're introducing you to one woman who is using her passion to help local kids. >> yeah, she is brightening their holiday season by donating american girl dolls restored by hand. abc seven news reporter tim johns was there as she made the special delivery. >> they're stunning. >> for sue graham this holiday season has been particularly busy. for the past several months, the east bay resident has been collecting and restoring dozens of highly coveted american girl dolls, all of which she's donating to kids in foster care during the month of december. >> i'm someone who really wants to make a difference in my community and how can i make a difference? >> we caught up with graham monday as she was dropping off a batch of dolls at a san francisco adoption and foster care center. she told us for weeks, her house has been taken over by the dolls she's collected, as well as all of their accessories, many of which she makes herself. but graham does more than just collect the

dolls. she tells us almost all of them are used, and she's spent thousands of dollars and minutes cleaning and restoring them. >> hundreds of hours from repainting and restoring, you know, beds and, you know, dolls and making sure their limbs are tight. their hair is appropriate. >> 20-24 is the third year graham has decided to donate dolls to kids in need. this year, one agency she's donating to is alternative family services in san francisco. >> what touches me the most, honestly, is that she reached out to us, as opposed to us reaching out. >> carolyn cruz jaramillo is the agency's san francisco office manager. she says graham's donation will make a huge impact on the holiday season for many of the children they work with. >> a lot of our clients come with just about nothing, just the clothes on their backs, and i think this will be something very cherished they will cherish for sure. >> while graham also works a full time job, she says the joy she's able to bring the kids

the 50s for san francisco. oakland, 36 in santa rosa, 48 degrees right now in napa. vacaville 37 degrees tomorrow morning when you get going, bundle up down to 30 in santa rosa by morning you will notice 43 san jose, 37 concord, 40s around san francisco, oakland 50 degrees in half moon bay. now the other big story that we are watching is the winds. not so much here, but down in southern california, high pressure has been moving in behind a departing low. the winds will flowing from the north northeast. the santa ana winds have developed southern california is under a red flag warning until wednesday evening. it's parts of southern california. particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning. they've got critically dry fuels. you combine it with gusty winds and low humidity, and they've got heightened fire danger. extreme fire weather is possible. wind advisory for parts of southern california, as well as they are expecting strong winds. we're getting the offshore flow here, but not nearly as strong. some of our

hilltops have reported wind gusts over 50 miles an hour. hood mountain right now 43, oakland hills 34. but the good news for us is we had so much rain last month, how could we forget? there's a lot of moisture in the fuels so we're okay in terms of fire danger. beautiful view from emeryville overnight tonight. cold night, patchy morning frost tomorrow. increasing clouds. and then wednesday night going into thursday morning. rain is back. it's going to turn breezy temperatures first thing tomorrow morning. of course it's going to be chilly. but tomorrow afternoon mid 50s inland to the low 60s along the coast right around the bay shoreline right around fremont, san jose. you're going to get into the mid and upper 60s, but the cloud cover will be increasing. you can see it here clearly on the timeline. as we head into the afternoon. those clouds will filter the sun. and then here comes system number one 7:00 wednesday evening. you see that rain starting to move into the north bay. it is widespread at 10 p.m. light to moderate in nature. thursday morning. we have a few more showers and then that system is out of here. the break

will be very brief, so rainfall estimates anywhere between a quarter of an inch to just over a half. an inch. with that first system, another storm gets in here on saturday and that continues into sunday. and another one on monday. we're talking about rainfall that is going to measure in inches. if this computer model is right over two inches in santa rosa, about an over an inch in san francisco, less in the rain shadow livermore, san jose, you saw up north up to several inches of rain. and this will result in snow in the mountains. donner by a week from tonight 25in of snow, 20in at kirkwood. so it's starting to definitely look like it should for this time of year. accuweather seven day forecast. cold morning. cloudier afternoon. level one for wednesday into thursday morning and then we get a brief break with some fog friday morning, but then wet and windy weather for your saturday. that's looking soggy right now. it's a level one. we may need to bump it to a two showers in the morning on sunday. it's a likelihood. and then monday more
