>> good evening. thank you for joining us tonight. an eagle eyed mcdonalds employee hailed as a hero by police after spotting a man resembling the shooter who gunned down unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson last week in midtown manhattan. and calling 911. here's abc's investigative correspondent aaron katersky. reporter. >> today, an arrest in the manhunt that has gripped the nation. >> when officers arrived, they made contact with the male who had a face mask on. that male was asked to remove his face mask and officers immediately recognized him as a suspect in the new york city shooting. >> 26 year old luigi mangione is the suspect in the december fourth shooting death of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson, and now facing second degree murder and other charges in new york. >> some dark corners. this killer is being hailed as a hero. hear me on this. he is no hero. >> initially, he was charged in pennsylvania with five offenses,

including forgery, carrying a firearm without identification, tampering with records, possession of instruments of crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement. >> this is a message to the criminal element that they that they want to commit a crime in new york city, and cross state lines will find you and bring you to justice. >> mangione was arrested just after 9 a.m, police said. an employee at a mcdonald's recognized his face from images shared on social media. >> my hat is completely off to this mcdonald's worker. that person is exactly what you want the rest of us to do, which is if you see something, say something and do it immediately. >> responding officers questioned the suspect who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent ids as well as a u.s. passport. officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a

suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder. >> police said they found a mask like the one worn by the shooting suspect, a fake new jersey i.d. that allegedly matched the one used by the suspect to check into a new york city hostel ten days before the shooting, and allegedly, a large sum of cash. they've also started going through some of his social media posts. they see an x ray of a spine and posts indicating the suspect read books about back injuries. >> we know he has taught he has ties to san francisco, california, and his last known address was honolulu, hawaii. he has no prior arrest history in new york. >> mangione, seen here in a 2016 speech for his top ranked baltimore high school's founder's day ceremony, was valedictorian of his class. >> i'm honored to be speaking to you all today on behalf of the gilman class of 2016. >> the mangione family releasing a statement tonight saying in part, our family is shocked and devastated by luigi's arrest. we offer our prayers to the family of brian thompson, and we ask

people to pray for all involved. he attended the university of pennsylvania, majoring in computer science and earning a dual bachelor's and master's degree in engineering. authorities say he was arrested in 2023, in honolulu for trespassing in a hawaii state park. he pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay a $100 fine. after his arrest in pennsylvania. police said they found this ghost gun. according to the charging document. mangione lied about his identity to police and carried the ghost gun without a license. they also say they found handwritten notes. mangione allegedly writing, quote, these parasites had it coming and i do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done. >> so it's a cause driven crime and they lock on it, gives them a purpose, and they believe the only way they can advance their cause is to do something outrageously violent. >> the brazen shooting shocked the country. the victim, brian thompson, was in new york city for minnesota. walking alone

into an annual meeting with investors at the hilton hotel in midtown, he was walking with purpose, not worried, obviously, about anything right in the middle of the sidewalk and the video shows the shooting happening right there shortly before 7 a.m. authorities believe the shooter was allegedly lying in wait. seen in this video obtained by abc news before opening fire with a weapon that appeared to have a silencer. >> the shooter steps onto the sidewalk from behind the car. he ignores numerous other pedestrians, approaches the victim from behind. >> thompson was shot in his back and in his right calf. the 50 year old died of his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. surveillance footage captured the suspect fleeing on an e-bike riding into central park before leaving the city. >> the shooter appears to be a light skinned male. he's wearing a light brown or cream colored jacket, a black face mask, black and white sneakers, and a very distinctive gray backpack. >> a massive manhunt soon followed for just over five

days, our nypd investigators combed through thousands of hours of video, followed up on hundreds of tips and processed every bit of forensic evidence dna, fingerprints, ip addresses, and so much more to tighten the net. >> we deployed drones, canine units, and scuba divers. >> police unraveling more and more evidence in the passing days. the alleged shooter's full face seen unmasked on this surveillance footage from the upper west side. hostilely checked into using that fake id and cash and images from a taxi ride. the alleged shooter was believed to have taken roughly 20 minutes after the shooting, seemingly looking into the camera. >> the idea that he's always got a mask on, tell me, is that he doesn't want anybody to see his entire face, and there's obviously tons of cameras, in particular in manhattan. so he knows basically every time he moves in and out of a restaurant, a of the hostel, the

likelihood that he's on camera someplace is pretty high. it's another check mark on his plan to stay anonymous during those days while he planned out how he was going to pull this off. >> police say they found shell casings at the scene with the words deny, defend and deposed written in sharpie. police also recovered a cell phone, granola bar wrapper and water bottle, along with a backpack containing a tommy hilfiger jacket and monopoly money. detectives working to figure out if the fake money was meant as a statement. >> you absolutely have to have the public. law enforcement is only as good as good as the public helping you and this case is such a prime example of that. >> thompson's murder ignited online anger against the health insurance industry over the weekend. the company putting up fencing around its headquarters. unitedhealth group saying in a statement to abc news our hope is that today's apprehension brings some relief to brian's family, friends, colleagues and

>> welcome back jay-z tonight denying allegations in a shocking new lawsuit amended to include him originally aimed just at sean diddy combs. >> if you're having girl problems, i feel bad for you, son. i got 99 problems, but it ain't one. >> i got the 99 problems. rapper is adding one more problem to his list in an amended civil complaint, jay-z, whose real name is shawn carter, is now being accused of drugging and raping a 13 year old girl at an afterparty following the 2000 video music awards in new york city. the lawsuit was originally filed in october against sean diddy combs, now refiled to openly name jay-z as his alleged coconspirator. combs is currently behind bars pending trial on federal charges, including sex trafficking. >> for jay-z, this presents a very difficult situation

because, unlike sean combs, jay-z doesn't have the opportunity to say that he's being charged criminally and that this civil case should be paused instead. this case could go forward, and he would have to sit for depositions, argue, defend, show where his whereabouts were, and the light of day could be very damaging to him, both in the court of law and the court of public opinion. guys, one more for the man. >> jay-z has been famously married to beyonce for 16 years. they have three children together. today, jay-z denying all allegations, saying in part, my only heartbreak is for my family, adding these allegations are so heinous in nature that i implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one. whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away. would you not agree these alleged victims would deserve real justice if that were the case? his attorneys, quickly taking his rebuttal to court filing a motion to deny the accuser's request to remain anonymous or dismiss the lawsuit, calling it a cynical and calculated campaign to force

payment of an exorbitant sum of money. >> there are a number of reasons as to why a defendant would ask that a plaintiff be named in a civil lawsuit such as this. they may simply say that getting the name and the time and place of when something occurred would better allow them to prepare for a defense. the other, probably less benign reason is oftentimes when someone is accused of a crime like this, the accuser doesn't want to be named. and if they are forced to be named, we have seen certain people decide to drop the lawsuit altogether so it could be a tactic to try to get the lawsuit dropped. >> the wall of silence has now been broken, and victims are coming forward. >> this recent revelation stems from one of at least seven civil lawsuits against sean combs, filed in october by attorney tony buzbee, all of which allege combs sexually abused dozens of victims for over two decades. >> what shocked me most was that it was going on openly in front of other people. people that you, people that you would know who didn't do anything to stop

it. >> buzbee, a prominent houston lawyer, is no stranger to going against powerful entities. he represented 12,000 plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the oil company bp following the tragic deepwater horizon oil spill in 2010, bp agreed to pay $7.8 billion to compensate local residents who were impacted by the damage. in a statement, sean combs legal team called the lawsuits against their client shameless publicity stunts and that mr. combs never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone. man or woman, adult or minor. >> for combs, he's under a lot of fire, both from a civil and a criminal standpoint. he's got a criminal case in the southern district of new york, where he could be going away to prison for decades if not a lifetime. and as each week seems to pass by, tony buzbee and other individuals seem to just be adding on civil lawsuit after civil lawsuit. >> according to the complaint, the 13 year old jane doe was dropped off near the radio city

music hall in 2000, hoping to get into that year's video music awards, but instead found her way into an afterparty. >> according to the allegations, when she first got to the party, she was asked to sign something something she believes to be an nda, but she didn't really read the details. after that, she entered the party. >> after accepting a drink. she claims she began to feel woozy and lightheaded, and entered what appeared to be an empty bedroom so she could lie down moments later. the lawsuit alleges combs, carter and an unnamed female celebrity enter, all of whom jane doe says she recognized in the lawsuit. jane doe then alleges that combs and carter took turns raping her as she lay on the bed disoriented, all while celebrity be watched. she claims she was only able to escape after hitting diddy and running out of the bedroom. >> within the amended lawsuit of sean combs and now sean carter, the plaintiff is saying that she suffered immeasurable physical and psychological damage, that she's had problems with interacting with people down the
