malibu under an evacuation order this morning as a wildfire explodes in size overnight. the dangerous conditions that's driving the flames this morning. and good morning to you on this tuesday, december 10th. >> yeah. welcome back everyone. let's begin with reggie aqui. hello. >> hello. welcome back. so that fire you saw burning that is in the same area of the woolsey fire in 2018. so there are a lot of areas under evacuations this morning. we'll show you that map in one second. here locally. it has been breezy, but we have no fire danger. the strongest winds are occurring across southern california this morning. and unlike southern california, has not seen significant rainfall yet this season. we had such a wet november. that is why any sort of wind event here locally would not be as extreme as what we're seeing down there. live. look outside. it is clear it is cold out there right now. look at all these 30s on the board. 34 in fairfield, 31 in santa rosa. 37 that current temperature in danville. so we do have frost advisories in effect

until 9 a.m. just bundle up out there this morning. it is quite cold under clear skies. later on today we'll have sunshine giving way to late day clouds. it's dry today. it's still pretty mild. temperatures are in the 60s. later on this afternoon, rain is back in the forecast here. starting tomorrow night. however, that red flag warning across southern california. this is a big event with the santa ana winds currently 50 mile per hour gusts. the fire burning near malibu. those winds are racing down the hillside. and that is meaning the fire is spreading. cal fire said. once the sun is up at about 7 a.m, they're going to send about 15 tankers to this fire. so there's some good news there. let's check in with sue. see the drive times going. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone. it's looking good on the eastern freeway. we've got a lot of gaps between those headlights. traffic is moving at the limit towards the bay bridge toll plaza. we've got no major stalls or accidents to affect your freeways at this hour. however, we do have a fatal accident. it's not on the

golden gate bridge. that's the good news. this unfortunate accident is in rohnert park. it's on surface street, stony point drive at rohnert park expressway, which is a major thoroughfare. they are diverting traffic off. if you normally do take either rohnert park expressway or stony point road, it's going to be shut down at that intersection for quite some time. you may want to avoid it, and we'll be back in just a few. >> all right, sue, thank you. and we're continuing to track that breaking news out of southern california where fire crews have been working all night to stop a fast moving fire burning in malibu. the franklin fire broke out around 11:00 last night. it exploded in size due to extreme winds in the area. as drew was mentioning, and it's already at least 1800 acres. we do want to take a live look of that scene right now. we know overnight thousands of people were put under mandatory evacuation orders. at one point, pepperdine university was surrounded by flames as students sheltered on campus. classes have been canceled today,

though, the fire has burned past the university. now the iconic pacific coast highway is closed. of course, we're going to keep monitoring this throughout the morning for you. i'm standing b. >> we also saw some winds in the east bay overnight. not as strong as in southern california, but they are being blamed for causing this tree to come down on a home on eunice street in berkeley. winds reached up to 30 miles an hour in the area. first responders said that there were no injuries, along with other trees. the winds knocked over these store displays and outdoor seating areas this morning, the person accused of shooting and killing the ceo of united health care in new york last week is now facing a murder charge and is being held in a pennsylvania jail. >> 26 year old luigi mangione was captured thanks to an employee at mcdonald's and a rookie police officer. we've also learned that mangione has ties to the bay area. >> police arrested mangione yesterday in altoona, pennsylvania, nearly 300 miles from where the shooting happened. he was escorted by multiple officers to thed by courthouse and will remain in custody pending extradition to

new york, according to an online court docket. >> he is facing second degree murder charges. the docket shows he's also charged with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of a weapon. the forged instrument, as they're calling it, is the fake new jersey driver's license. he allegedly used to check into a hostel before the shooting. >> police believe he left new york on a bus, then went to pennsylvania. mangione was eating at a mcdonald's yesterday when an employee recognized him and called 911. an altoona police officer has only been on the job for six months, made the arrest the mangione family released a brief statement that reads in part, our family is shocked and devastated by luigi's arrest. we offer our prayero the family of brian thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved and we have been learning more about the ties. >> luigi mangione has to the bay area. abc seven news reporter lena howland is in the studio this morning with what we know about his time here. lena. >> amanda. after luigi mangione

got his bachelor's and master's degrees from the university of pennsylvania in engineering and computer science, we learned he came right here to the bay area to start working for four months. in the summer of 2019, stanford university confirms. mangione worked there as a head counselor in the pre-collegiate studies program. according to his linkedin page, he says he taught artificial intelligence to gifted high school students. his facebook page included several photos of him enjoying the sights around the bay area, before eventually moving to hawaii. we talked to a friend and former roommate from hawaii. he doesn't know what may have gone wrong, but is well aware of mangione's back problems and a recent surgery that he ha. >> i knew he was going to have a surgery, so earlier s year i checked in with him. he confirmed that he had had surgery and he sent me the x-rays. it looked heinous with just giant screws going into his spine and the backpack that was found tossed out in central park

after the killing was made by peak design, which is a san francisco company. >> each contains a serial number where the company can trace the purchase history. the owner of that company told abc seven news reporter dan noyes that he is now talking with authorities and since 2020. mangione also wrote on linkedin that he worked for truecar, the used car app based out of santa monica. but the company tells us he stopped working there in 2023. live in studio lena howland abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. it's been less than a week since the shooting and obviously a lot has happened very fast. you can see a timeline of the case with images of the suspect that helped investigators track him down. it's all part of our coverage on abc seven news.com. >> embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus is refusing to testify before the board of supervisors as they try to pressure her to step down. corpus lawyers say county supervisors asked her to testify under oath at a meeting today. she says she won't do it because some of the supervisors have

already decided against her. corpus is facing allegations of misconduct and corruption, which she denies. the abc seven news i-team has learned the county offered corpus $1 million to resign and she refused. in march, voters will decide whether to give the board of supervisors the power to fire the elected sheriff. >> today, the alameda county board of supervisors could finalize a process for appointing a replacement for the da. in the meantime, an interim da is now on the job. roy roberts steps into place of pamela price, who was recalled by voters in november. roberts served as price's assistant chief for two years. his former boss was accused of being soft on crime and insensitive to crime victims. a mandate not lost on roberts. >> i think that the goal is safety, public safety and you know what the public should know is that if a person commits a crime and is charged in alameda county, they will be prosecuted. >> it's unclear how long roberts will be in charge, but he says

he will fill in as long as is needed. whomever the board selects will serve until the county's next scheduled election, which is in 2026. >> president elect donald trump is nominating san francisco based attorney harmeet dhillon for a big job at the department of justice. dhillon has been nominated for assistant attorney general for civil rights. she is california's republican party chairwoman and a lawyer for the trump campaign. in his announcement, trump said, quote, harmeet is one of the top election lawyers in the country fighting to ensure that all and only legal votes are counted. dhillon posted on social media, saying she is extremely honored by the nomination. defense secretary nominee pete hegseth is now making new claims about controversial comments he made about women in combat. he's been on capitol hill trying to win over lawmakers, questioning if he's fit to lead our nation's military. here's abc news reporter nicole diantonio. >> good morning everybody. >> defense secretary nominee pete hegseth. now argues his

past comments about women in the military have been misconstrued. >> some of our greatest warriors, our best warriors out there are women who serve, raise their right hand to defend this country and love our nation. >> hegseth recently said this about women in combat roles. >> everybody knows between bone density and lung capacity and muscle strength, men and women are just different. >> yesterday, hegseth met with senator joni ernst, an army veteran who will be key for his confirmation. ernst, not committing to vote for hegseth, but saying she supports the process. meanwhile, tulsi gabbard, president elect trump's nominee for national intelligence director, met with republican senators. >> what should happen next in syria? congresswoman facing scrutiny about her visit to syria in 2017, when she met with then president bashar al assad. >> her visit, seen by some as legitimizing a brutal leader. but gabbard defended the trip, saying it's important to open dialog. assad is now fled to russia after rebels took the

right around midnight. that we're all seeing the wet weather late wednesday into early thursday. some pockets of downpours expected for the thursday morning commute. i think most of the action is out of here. we'll have a few lingering showers in the morning and some of those could continue into the early afternoon. unfortunately, though, this rain is not making its way to southern california. that is where we have the frankln fire burning this morning. it broke out around 11 p.m. last night in malibu. this is the same area of the woolsey fire. remember that 1 in 2018 which spread really rapidly? a red flag warning is in effect in this area until tomorrow. so the winds are fierce right now. and they will stay active over the next two days. back here at home, it's all about dry conditions today. late day clouds, then that rain at night, wednesday into thursday and another storm set to soak us over the weekend. guys, we'll show you that coming up in a few minutes. reggie. >> drew thank you. a popular influencers tragic death now highlighting food allergy measures here in california. coming up, the new petition demanding stricter guidelines.

developments in a wild story out of monterey county. deputies there say they can't verify a hikers claim that someone tied her to a tree and left her there for hours last week. the sheriff's office announced it was searching for a suspect after a woman said a man tied her to a tree in the pebble beach area. the woman said the man had followed her but did not hurt or rob her. investigators say they found a witness who didn't back up the hikers account. they say an extensive search of the area also didn't turn up a suspect. >> uc santa cruz is being sued by the people who were hurt in a bus crash on campus nearly a year ago. three of the six people who were injured are seeking damages. one alleges the driver, who died had been

speeding and braking hard the entire trip. ucsc responded saying this bus crash was a tragic and heartbreaking moment for our uc santa cruz community. we continue to mourn the death of our bus driver and extend our sympathy to the students who were on the bus. to date, we have not been served. >> boeing has laid off hundreds of additional employees in washington state and here in california. these planned cuts will eventually reduce the company's workforce by about 17,000, nearly 500 boeing employees in california got let go. boeing is cutting 10% of its workforce as it tries to recover from financial and regulatory troubles, and a recent strike by machinists that lasted almost two months. >> thousands of striking san francisco hotel workers are trying to discourage people from going to a big health care conference next month. the jp morgan conference is set to be held at the westin saint francis hotel in union square. a union spokesperson says the hotels aren't being transparent about what kind of experience

attendees will have in a hotel on strike, so union members are reaching out to attendees to let them know what they believe the experience will be like. hotel owners have not commented on upcoming conferences, but have said they are committed to negotiating a fair contract. san francisco symphony hosted thousands of children for a free deck the hall community day at davies symphony hall. they're hoping to inspire students who may not have access to this type of professional performance. each performance ended with an audience sing along so kids could take part in the show to dozens of school. children will get to see a special performance of the nutcracker today. the s.f. ballet will hold a special school time performance at thel san francisco opera house. it will include a full length version of the beloved holiday ballet, accompanied by the s.f. ballet orchestra. san francisco

ballet is hosting another school time performance next tuesday as well. >> as always, there are a few surprises during yesterday's announcement of the nominees for the 2025 golden globe awards. >> amelia perez, netflix >> amelia perez received ten nominations, the most ever in the musical comedy category. the brutalists received the most nominations in the drama category with seven. abc's abbott elementary, which is, by the way, the first thing i've heard of in this entire story. so far, won the best tv comedy category. the show won the award two years ago. the bear had the most nominations in the tv categories, with five, followed by shogun and only murders in the building with four each. all three are fx or hulu shows which are owned by disney. our parent company. this year's event marks the first time the golden globes haven't been under the guidance of the hollywood foreign press association. >> okay, amelia perez. i feel like i have to get on that because that, i mean, to take home or to receive

santa rosa. good morning. fairfield 34 down to 39 in fremont. oakland has been ebbing and flowing depending on the wind direction. right now it's at 42 degrees. but last hour it was right around 50 degrees. so the wind is making a big change depending on which way it's blowing this morning. 42 that current temperature in san mateo. live doppler seven along with satellite. it is clear across california. it is windy in southern california, where that franklin fire broke out late last night near malibu. underneath that red flag warning winds continue in southern california through tomorrow evening. we're tracking our next rain maker here in northern california. this arrives tomorrow night and lingers into thursday. so today you'll notice some late day clouds moving in. it's totally dry out there today. we'll have temperatures mainly in the 60s once again for daytime highs overnight tonight. not as chilly as we are right now. we will see temperatures mainly in the upper 30s to the upper 40s. heading into wednesday. now the storm impact scale. it is back here wednesday night

to thursday for those scattered showers. it's a level one for breezy winds and some slick travel, especially on thursday. so rainfall totals coming our way as we head into wednesday and thursday. likely a half of an inch for a lot of us. maybe a bit more in the north bay. but the pattern is very progressive. over the next seven days we are adding to these rainfall totals in a big way. so from now until early next week, we're talking anywhere from 2 to 4in of rain coming our way across a big portion of the region. so one storm wednesday night to thursday, likely a stronger storm moving in here. this is saturday the 14th. this one looks to linger all day saturday, making it soggy. and then another storm arrives here early next week. so the accuweather seven day forecast does show you dry today. rain back here tomorrow night into thursday. we've now upped the storm impact scale from a one to a two on saturday, with another storm early next week guys. >> all right drew thank you. coming up the seven things to know this morning. >> putting santa's workshop to shame. the bay area woman wh

busy. for the past several months, the east bay resident has been collecting and restoring dozens of highly coveted american girl dolls, all of which she's donating to kids in foster care during the month of december. >> i'm someone who really wants to make a difference in my community and how can i make a difference? >> we caught up with graham monday as she was dropping off a batch of dolls at a san francisco adoption and foster care center. she told us for weeks, her house has been taken over by the dolls she's collected, as well as all of their accessories, many of which she makes herself. but graham does more than just collect the dolls. she tells us almost all of them are used, and she's spent thousands of dollars and minutes cleaning and restoring them. >> hundreds of hours from repainting and restoring, you know, beds and, you know, dolls and making sure their limbs are tight. their hair is appropriate. >> 20-24 is the third year graham has decided to donate dolls to kids in need. this

year, one agency she's donating to is alternative family services in san francisco. >> what touches me the most, honestly, is that she reached out to us as opposed to us reaching out, carolyn cruz jaramillo is the agency's san francisco office manager. >> she says graham's donation will make a huge impact on the holiday season for many of the children they work with. >> a lot of our clients come with just about nothing. just the clothes on their backs. and i think this will be something very cherished. they will cherish for sure. >> while graham also works a full time job, she says the joy she's able to bring the kids makes all the hard work worth it. that's why once this holiday season is over, she began getting things ready for next year. >> this allows me to do something special, and i feel at the end of the day, it makes me feel just everything about the holiday season. >> graham buys about 80% of the american girl dolls herself, but says she also accepts donations

bundle up this morning with these cold temperatures. first thing, it's going to take some time for us to warm up later on this afternoon, but we will find another mild day. one more totally dry day before rain is back in the picture tomorrow. 60s on the board with some late day clouds. but all in all, it's a nice day. let's take you to southern california. we are tracking the franklin fire. that is the name of this fire now that is burning near malibu. this is the same area back in 2018 that we saw the woolsey fire. a red flag warning is in effect. those winds are gusting currently 30 to 50mph out of the northeast to the southwest. so the pch is closed in this area for good reason because the fires on both sides of the highway. here's the red flag warning this continuing until wednesday night, so we do have several more days of these dangerous winds. let's check in with sue and see those drive times here. >> good morning drew. good morning everyone tuesday morning. no metering lights yet. and as i say that they're probably turning them on. this is about the time right now. no problem getting through the toll

the man was arrested at this mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania, after nearly a week long search. the break came when an employee recognized mangione from the surveillance images and called police. >> when officers arrived, they made contact with the male, who had a face mask on uh. that male was asked to remove his face mask and officers immediately recognized him as a suspect in the new york city shooting. >> police discovered mangione had a passport and several fake ids, including a fake new jersey id, the same one allegedly used to check into a hostel in new york. police say he also had a 3d printed silencer and a 3d printed ghost gun, which is untraceable with no serial numbers as well as a three page document which sources say mentioned unitedhealthcare by name and included the quotes. these parasites had it coming, and i do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done. >> i understand people have real frustration with our health care

at truecar, the used car app based out of santa monica. but the company says he stopped working there last year, and the backpack found tossed out in central park after the killing last week was made by a san francisco company called peak design. each one contains a serial number where the company can trace the purchase. history. the company's owner confirmed that he is now talking with authorities. live in studio lena howland abc seven news. >> tiktok is asking the supreme court to delay a u.s. ban of the app from taking effect next month. the company says small businesses and creators will lose more than $1 billion in the first month after the ban starts. congress passed the law to force the sale of the app or ban it, citing national security concerns. if the court grants the delay, it would give time for justices to weigh in on the law and for president elect trump to decide if his new administration will enforce it. you may remember trump pushed for a tiktok ban during his first term, but now he says he

angeles. disney influencer dominique brown was attending a holiday event hosted by the pop culture merchandise retailer box lunch, when she apparently suffered the medical emergency, according to the petition. brown had informed the staff of her life threatening allergy, but she was still served food containing the allergen. the petition also claims the venue didn't have epipens. the venue says it is conducting an internal review of the incident. >> if you've been to the grocery store lately, you may have noticed a shortage of eggs on the shelves of some bay area stores are bare, as the bird flu outbreak gets worse. abc seven news reporter laura martinez spoke to people about the impac. >> eggs are once again hard to find on certain bay area store shelves. we went to two grocery stores in san jose. one put a sign up that said chickens on strike. >> what's going on? it was fully empty. and it's not the first time. i was actually here maybe a couple of weeks ago. >> the usda is tracking rising

cases of avian influenza in the last 30 days. commercial flocks throughout the u.s. have confirmed bird flu, according to their map, california has the highest number of flocks impacted. the cdc reported more than 111 million birds have been affected since the outbreak in 2022. >> we are already paying like six, maybe $7 a carton. >> experts say the impact is making eggs more expensive. >> last year i was paying about 30 odd 40, 30, $40 a week for my groceries. now i'm paying more than $100. >> the bird flu was also detected in a batch of raw milk from a farm in the central valley. it triggered a voluntary recall impacting bay area stores on friday. the usda ordered nationwide testing of raw or unpasteurized milk. testing will start december 16th in six states, including california. the cdc says the current risk to the public remains low. for anna rodriguez, she said she plans to do more research on the bird flu
