conditions here were perfect essentially for a spread of a very fast moving wild fire. that is exactly what we're seeing. these wind gusts could continue through the morning. so this might get even worse through the day. this morning, mandatory evacuations for malibu just a few miles from pepperdine university. >> just watching everything we need to. i don't know. keeping our families >> i do have some homes that will be impacted. >> reporter: the fire growing to more than 850 acres in less than three hours. winds of up to 76 miles an hour, combined with dry brush are fueling the pace of the flames. >> there's nothing you can really prepare for. just kaoefp keep a watchful on people around you. try to get everybody out.

>> reporter: students at pepperdine under a mandatory shelter in place. los angeles county sheriff department deputies going door to door, using loud speakers to alert residents to leave as quickly as possible. because firefighters were anticipating these could be dangerous conditions, we are told by officials they had already deployed some assets ahead of time. that's helped curb some of the threat of the fire. but already, with the sun coming up, we can tell you there are some homes that have been destroyed, and these flames are still burning out here today. robin? >> robin: we're going to turn to breaking news in the fast moving investigation into the suspect of the killing of united health ceo brian thompson. overnight a 26-year-old was charged with murder hours after he was arrested in pennsylvania after being spotted at a mcdonald's several hours outside new york city. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is in huntington, pennsylvania, with the latest for us. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the suspect is being held at this pennsylvania state prison following his arrest at that

mcdonald's when police confronted him, they said they knew immediately, that's our guy. he's now charged with murder. police say he was carrying evidence that could point them to motive. this morning luigi mangione is charged with the murder of ceo brian thompson. the 26-year-old led by police in handcuffs, appearing in a pennsylvania court on local fun and forgery charges. >> this morning approximately 9:14 a.m., altoona officers received a call of a suspicious male at a restaurant. >> reporter: he was arrested 300 miles from the scene, traveling on a bus that stopped at this mcdonald's. someone recognized him and an employee called 911. >> the mcdonald's employee did something we ask every american to do. if you see something, say something. most importantly, do something. and they did.

>> reporter: officers found mangione wearing a mask. >> soon as we asked him to pull it down, my partner and i recognized him immediately, just from what we saw on the media, with photos, videos. we didn't even think twice about it. we knew that was our guy. >> reporter: when asked for i.d., he gave them this fake new jersey driver's license, the same one he allegedly used to check into a hostel ten days before the shooting. when asked if he had been to new york, mangione became quiet and started to shake. >> he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen targeted murder of brian thompson, ceo of united healthcare last wednesday in midtown manhattan. >> reporter: the nypd racing to altoona. police say the suspect had this ghost gun similar used to kill thompson, along with handwritten notes mentioned united healthcare by name and said these parasites had it coming. at the crime scene, police

finding deny, defend and depose written on the bullets. >> it does seem that he's had some ill will toward corporate america. >> reporter: mangione grew up in maryland, attending the pressty shus gilman school in baltimore, graduating valedictorian. seen here speaking at the school's founders day. >> class of 2016 is designed by pioneering mentality that accompanies a strong commitment to young tradition. >> reporter: online, mangione posted about the infamous manifesto by ted kazinski saying he was violent but also an extreme political revolutionary. he also posted an x-ray of a spine and reviews of book about back injuries. authorities including them as part of the investigation. >> my understanding is his spine was misaligned. seems like certain things would trigger it. >> reporter: the family of mangione saying in a statement, our family is shocked and devastated by luigi's arrest. we offer prayers to the family

of brian thompson. his murder triggered anger online at the insurance industry. >> i understand people have real frustration with our healthcare system. this killer is being hailed as a hero. hear me on this. he is no hero. >> reporter: police said mangione had been in pennsylvania for several days and had actually traversed the state from philadelphia to pittsburgh. authorities are also investigating recent travel across the united states and overseas. but, robin, his next trip is going to be to new york, where he's charged with murder. robin? >> robin: did investigators have any idea who this suspect was before he was apprehended? >> reporter: they didn't, robin. in fact, they collected a lot of evidence from the murder scene and beyond, but nothing to point to an identification. so until the customer and employee at the mcdonald's recognized the surveillance images and called police, they had no idea who the suspect was.

and public safety. overnight marine veteran daniel penny a free man, celebrating with his attorney after being cleared with all criminal charges in the deadly chokehold that took the life of jordan neely on a new york city subway. after five days of deliberation a jury finding the 26-year-old not guilty of criminally negligent homicide. in the courtroom, neely's father erupting in anger after the verdict, cursing in the courtroom and eventually forcibly removed by a court officer. outside the courthouse he called the system rigged. >> i miss my son. my son didn't have to go through this. i didn't have to go through this either. >> reporter: as he spoke, protesters chanted, say his name. counter protesters calling penny a hero. the case dividing new york city. authorities saying neely suffered from mental illness and drug addiction. prosecutors admitting the 30-year-old homeless man made threats on that subway in may of

2023, but arguing penny's hold was excessive and lasted almost a minute after neely stopped moving. >> i just put him out. >> reporter: the defense saying penny never intended to kill. >> i am just trying to deescalate the situation. >> reporter: the judge dropping the most serious manslaughter charge after the jury dead locked. all 12 jurors voting not guilty on that remaining lesser charge. jordan neely's family battles to pursue a civil lawsuit. lawyers for penny say they are pleased with the verdict adding new yorkers can take comfort knowing they can continue to stand up for one another without sacrificing their rights or freedom. george? >> george: stephanie, thanks. now the epa announcing two chemicals found in cleaning products. eva pilgrim has the story. good morning. >> good morning. this is major. epa abouncing it is banning two chemicals used in every day cleaning products. it is for all uses of tce and

allegations walked the red carpet at the premiere of mufasa alongside his wife and daughter. ♪ known for his empire state of mind, the rap titan's mind set now seems to be on dismissing that lawsuit. in his counter filing jay-z demands the woman reveal herself and calls it a cynical and calculated campaign to force payment of an exorbitant sum of money. ♪ in 2000 jay-z was nominated for best rap video. he and combs both attended the award show. the newly amended civil lawsuit originally filed in october against combs for the first time identified celebrity a as jay-z claiming the two drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl at an after party and that another celebrity stood by and watched as combs and carter took turns assaulting the minor. combs also denied all allegations.

airplane. and neighbors are reportedly seeing these drones flying at night or in the early morning hours in flocks and low altitudes. neighbors reported being woken up by a buzzing sound. officials don't have any answers. >> that is not an airplane. >> reporter: it's the latest in a string of mysterious drone sightings posted on social media that has residents worried. this morning the fbi is investigating. >> they're just pacing back and forth going very slow. >> reporter: the drones, which appear to have been larger than recreational drones have been spotted all over new jersey over the past week. >> looks like a space app. >> reporter: over president trump's golf course to monmoth county where the sheriff's office made this map. >> characteristic triangle lights underneath. >> reporter: to morris county, where 21 mayors sent a letter to new jersey's governor murphy. >> we don't see concern for public safety.

having said that, it's really frustrating that we don't have more answers as to where they're coming from. >> reporter: the sightings seem to be spreading. >> this is the third time that it's come around. >> reporter: with large drones reportedly in the sky around philadelphia. >> look at it. >> reporter: mysterious flying objects preventing a medical helicopter from landing to pick up a car crash victim prompting the faa to issue flight restrictions prohibiting drone flights over picatinny arsenal military base and trump national golf course bedminster. the fbi is still trying to figure out what's going on. in the mean time those 21 new jersey mayors are asking for not only a full investigation but clear communication to officials, law enforcement and residents about what the investigation finds. as well as any necessary laws to prevent any unauthorized or unsafe use of drones that could impact the public. guys? >> robin: this is all very very

26-year-old was charged with murder hours after his arrest. we're going to hear from the nypd commissioner and chief detective in a few moments. first let's go back to senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky in pennsylvania. >> reporter: good morning. from star student with a privileged upbringing to accused murderer, luigi mangione, 26, finds himself here at this pennsylvania state prison awaiting extradition to new york. overnight the nypd and manhattan district attorneys office filing charges, accusing him of murdering the healthcare ceo, brian thompson. he was a valedictorian at his prep school. he was an ivy league graduate. police arrested him at a mcdonald's in altoona after a customer recognized him and an employee called police. until then, we're told, investigators just did not know who he was. at first police said mangione showed them a fake new jersey driver's license like the one he allegedly used to check into a manhattan hostel. they also found a ghost gun similar to the weapon used to

kill thompson. and hand written pages that mention united healthcare and include the quote these parasites had it coming. but after so much anger online, even celebration at thompson's death, the governor of pennsylvania said he wanted to make clear that mangione is no hero. he said we are all less safe when people engage in vigilante justice. george? >> george: thank you very much. michael? >> michael: thank you, george. earlier i spoke with new york city police commissioner jessica tisch and chief detective joseph kenny about the investigation. commissioner, i'd like to start with you. mangione is facing murder charges. when do you expect him to be sent back to new york? >> you know, we don't know exactly what the timing is. we will see how the extradition hearing goes. i am just so proud of the work of the new york city police department over the past week. our detectives conducted an

incredible camera canvas, tracking his movements throughout the city. we had our scuba teams in the water looking for the gun. we had our helicopters overhead. it was just a real complete effort by the men and women of the new york city police department. >> michael: with all the evidence they have, the dna evidence. is there other forensic evidence that's tied mangione to the shooting? and do you believe they acted alone? >> so, we do have a lot of evidence in this case. when he was found, he was in possession of the same new jersey fake identification that was used at the hostel. the gun looks very similar, with a similar suppressor. so there's a lot of reasons that we feel very strongly that he is the person of interest in this case. >> michael: chief kenny, new york police released surveillance images that played a key role in his being recognized yesterday. they've been absolutely relentless in their pursuit. can you take us through the

investigation over the past few days? >> yeah, sure. as you said, the key to this case was releasing that photograph that we were able to obtain during one of the extensive video canvass. once we released it to media, we asked the public to help and asked the media to broadcast that nationwide. as you can see obviously that picture reached pennsylvania, where you had an employee and a patron of the mcdonald's in altoona recognize the subject. if we hadn't released that photograph in a timely manner, the investigation maybe would have went on longer. >> we say this all the time. if you see something, say something, do something. this case, that mcdonald's employee did just that. we are grateful as a city to that person. >> michael: without a doubt. before his arrest, mangione was not on your radar at all. how difficult does that make the investigation? >> so, we had a number of different leads that we got. we asked new yorkers and people across the country to call us

and let us know if they recognized the person. lots of people did. so we had a lot of different threads of this investigation going that we were working. but we had collected early in the investigation some forensic evidence, some dna evidence, some fingerprints. so we were very confident that we were ultimately going to get to the right person. it was just, we were thrilled to get the call the other day from altoona police department saying they had our person of interest in custody. >> michael: and it was just a matter of time. officials said they recovered a so called manifesto. have either of you seen it and, if so what does it tell you about a possible motive? >> chief, go ahead. >> i had the opportunity to read the manifesto. it's hand written. he does make some indication that he's frustrated with the healthcare system in the united states. specifically he states how we are the number one most expensive healthcare system in the world. yet the life expectancy of the

average american is ranked 42nd in the world. he was writing for his disdain for corporate america and in particular the healthcare industry. >> michael: commissioner, do you know if he had a personal connection to united healthcare? >> we don't know that yet. as the chief mentioned, there's still a lot more investigating to do. but this will all come together over the next few weeks and months. >> michael: there are also reports that he may have suffered a back injury. do you have any idea whether that played a role? >> i read that, too. again, this is all going to be part of this investigation. >> michael: all right. i appreciate both of your time. i know it's been an incredible week. both of you have done an incredible job along with your team. thank you, both, for sharing that with us this morning. >> robin: once again thank goodness for that customer at mcdonald's and the employee aaron told us earlier announced. they will split the reward

season. >> reporter: this is the time of year when a lot of shoppers get what's called frugal fatigue. it is easy to overspend when you are getting bombarded with ads and holiday sales. you definitely do want to price shop at different retailers. lot of stores are price matching. if you find something at a lower cost, a competitor will match the price. you want to set a dollar limit for every gift on your list. it is not too late. in our family we agreed to a set amount which that did include shipping costs, too. and to stick with a budget you might want to consider using cash. if you take out the exact amount of cash you need it will be harder to spend. you can also deposit a lump sum amount on apple cash and once you reach that limit you gotta be done spending. >> george: if you do use your credit card, what should you know? >> reporter: it is still so expensive to pay down that debt. average interest rate 21%. surveys show customers are still paying off holiday debt from

tell us about all of the work that goes into putting it together. >> sure. we have a long rich history. it involves everyone. we know the theme a year ahead of time. we divide it up into 23 different projects. they work on it throughout the year. >> janai: you're really organized. >> i'm really just the head elf. it takes everyone, over 200 dedicated staff, 30 to 40 students, hundreds of volunteers. everybody contributes to the longwood christmas. it's really about the scale. longwood is such a big place. our trees have to be big. our biggest tree is over 30 feet fully decorated. i have to keep my pulse on all of those things. they bring it together with our guest services to make it a true longwood christmas. >> janai: you keep your pulse on all of those things. your blood pressure must be through the roof. you can help all of us at home when it comes to decorating. you really got it down to a science. what do we need to know about making a tree sing like this? >> there's more than ornaments. for example, you can use natural
