>> thanks for joining us tonight. the man accused of murdering ceo brian thompson. launching into a loud tirade in front of reporters at a pennsylvania courthouse. now, law enforcement tonight warning health care executives to be vigilant in the aftermath of the murder. here's abc's senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky. >> a chaotic scene outside this pennsylvania courthouse as accused killer luigi mangione arrived for his extradition hearing and erupted in an angry outburst, clearly out of touch and insult the intelligence of the american people. it claimed the suspect shackled, but a team of deputies still forcing him inside. mangione is fighting extradition to new york, where he's facing second degree murder charges in the assassination style killing of united health care ceo brian thompson. he's also facing local gun and forgery charges in pennsylvania.

>> if you're an american, you believe in the american criminal justice system. you have to presume him to be innocent, and none of us would want anything other than that if that were us in those shoes. >> tonight, he's being held without bail at this nearby state prison. mangione appearing calm in court this afternoon after that outburst outside. new york governor kathy hochul said in a statement she will sign the governor's warrant sought by the manhattan district attorney's office for mengoni's extradition. earlier tonight, police releasing images of mangione monday inside the mcdonald's where he was arrested. taking down his mask to eat a hashbrown just moments before a worker called police. fellow customers doing a double take. >> my one friend made the comment. he thought it was he don't. don't that look like the shooter from new york? we pretty much laughed about it. >> when police arrived and asked mangione if he had recently visited new york city, he became quiet, became visibly nervous, kind of shaking at that question, and he didn't really

answer it directly. it was a five day manhunt that gripped the nation. local and federal law enforcement releasing several rounds of photographs of the alleged killer masked and on the move. >> law enforcement is really only as good as the public helping them. that's really the bottom line that you cannot effectively police a community unless you have the community with you. >> after getting on an electric bike following the shooting, authorities say he was able to escape new york by bus, leaving behind a backpack full of monopoly money and a tommy hilfiger jacket. police say he made it to the small city of altoona, pennsylvania, about 300 miles from new york. the victim, brian thompson, the ceo of unitedhealthcare, was in new york from minnesota and walking alone to an annual investors meeting at the hilton hotel on west 54th street when he strolled by his killer. >> i don't think it's a surprise that he picked the location that he picked, because it gave him a

tremendous audience, and from that vantage point, he clearly has been successful. i mean, this is all people can talk about now. >> shortly before 7 a.m, authorities believe the shooter was allegedly lying in wait, as seen in this video obtained by abc news, before opening fire with a weapon that appeared to have a silencer. a confidential nypd assessment obtained by abc news says mangione, appeared to view the targeted killing of thompson as a symbolic takedown of united health care over perceived corruption. mangione likely views himself as a hero of sorts, who has finally decided to act upon such injustices as the police assessment claims. >> it's a cause driven crime. they lock on it, gives them a purpose, and they believe the only way they can advance their cause is to do something outrageously violent. >> mangione may have been inspired by the unabomber. according to that same law enforcement analysis. like ted kaczynski, whose 17 year bombing campaign killed three and injured 23 people. the nypd's

analysis says mangione may become a martyr. abc news also obtained a copy of what police say is the alleged killer's handwritten screed. it says these parasites simply had it coming, and these mafioso have gotten too powerful and continue to abuse our country for immense profit. >> specifically, he states how we are the number one most expensive health care system in the world. yet the life expectancy of an american is ranked 42 in the world. so he was writing a lot about his disdain for corporate america and in particular, the health care industry. >> but even as police dig into a motive, there are still questions about the alleged shooter's background. mangione was from a prominent maryland family and the valedictorian at his elite prep school, as seen here in a 2016 speech for a school founder's day ceremony. >> i'm honored to be speaking to you all today on behalf of the gilman class of 2016. >> he went on to become an ivy league graduate, leading many to wonder how could he become an accused killer? we asked his former roommate in hawaii, who

said mangione struggled with a back injury. >> yeah, unfortunately, he did let me know that the severity of his back issue was such that it was very difficult to. have physical relationships with women, that it made things painful. >> on social media, police say he posted an x ray of a spine and wrote about back pain, sciatica and brain fog, saying it's absolutely brutal to have such a life halting issue. for a number of months, mangione had been out of touch with his family, and police sources say his mother filed a missing persons report in san francisco about two weeks before brian thompson's murder. repeated requests for information about the report went unanswered by the san francisco police department, which referred questions to the nypd. mangione's case has become a cause, with admirers posting videos like this one on instagram to britney spears song

mr. and mrs. smith with her ex, brad pitt. >> who's your daddy now? >> in maria, jolie learned to sing opera for the part, spending seven months with a vocal coach, her voice mixed with recordings of the real maria callas. so you actually really are singing? yeah. was that a little scary when you're on set and, you know, these moments are coming. >> the first day i was, i was an absolute lunatic because i have her in my ear. i can make sure that i'm singing it the same, you know, technically the same same way she is. but the only thing that can be heard on set is me. wow. >> the lessons healing for jolie and her return to the big screen after a three year hiatus. and you say opera lessons are like therapy? if so, how so? >> we all don't realize that different things that happen to us in our life, they we hold them in our body, right? the thing everything is just locked somewhere to help us keep going.

and so to really sing and sing very fully, you have to unlock all of that. >> wow. >> my first lesson. i took a deep breath and just cried and then left. and that was. >> like two of jolie's children, maddox and pax, worked on the film and were there during her most difficult singing feats. >> i've never sung, and somebody in my life wasn't very kind to me about singing, so it made me think i couldn't sing. so yes, my first day singing in front of the crew, we kept it really tight. my sons were working in the film, and i asked them to watch the doors to make sure nobody else came in. i was shaking. >> perhaps we could speak of your life away from the stage. >> there is no life away from the stage. >> is there anything in your life that compares to her love of singing? >> my motherhood. >> yeah. kids. >> yeah. it's my happiness. it's. you can take everything

else away from me. i could. nothing else matters. yeah. >> and you said that your boys, maddox and pax, they work on the film with you. they got the bug for the business. >> none of my children want to be in front of the camera at this time. interesting. they're quite private. shiloh is extremely private. they weren't born with privacy. right. so i hope they can have that. and all of my children suffered through my early opera singing in the house before i got kind of good. >> her performance in maria, already generating oscar buzz. variety magazine capturing the moment. jolie received an eight minute standing ovation after the premiere at the venice film festival in august. how did that make you feel? >> very emotional. all the hard work, all the hard work. and also it is about a real story of a real human being. so at the end of her days, her last years, she tried to sing again when she wasn't able to be what everybody wanted her to be. i think she she died feeling quite hurt and
