we're going to speak to his lawyer but first aaron katersky outside the prison there with the latest. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the 26-year-old suspect is now being held at this prison without bail after fighting extradition and shouting those fighting words that officials now fear could be considered a call to action. an outburst from luigi mangione shackled and handcuffed as he was dragged into court.

sheriffs deputies wrestling him inside. he refused to waive extradition to new york, where he's charged with murdering united health care ceo brian thompson. >> when i entered my appearance, he's pleaded not guilty. i've seen zero evidence at this point. >> reporter: the judge denied bail. mangione kept quiet as he left court, head down. he's a threat to no one, but this morning the nypd is alarmed by these posters outside the new york stock exchange and social media posts suggesting mangione is a martyr. >> we do a lot of work in the online space. as part of that, we'll use resources around the city wherever we need to when we're anticipating and dealing with a big uptick in threats. >> reporter: in a confidential assessment obtained by abc news, the nypd said mangione considered thompson's murder a symbolic takedown of united healthcare over perceived corruption adding the suspect likely views himself as a hero of sorts who has finally decided

to act upon such injustice. a copy of the suspect's alleged writings says united healthcare was among corporations that have gotten too powerful and that these parasites simply had it coming. mangione all referenced the spiral notebook that sources tell abc news contain writings about the unibomber and how mangione thought explosives could kill innocent people. the writings were found, police say, when mangione was arrested that mcdonald's, seen eating a hash brown moments before. >> my one friend made the comment, he goes, don't that look like the shooter from new york? >> reporter: an employee called police. >> the worker that took his order, she said his eyes and eyebrows, she just thought it was him. >> reporter: police say the gunman he has looked similar to the gun used in the murder, capable of firing nine mm rounds and made in part with a 3-d printer. the suspect tried checking into this altoona motel but no room

was available. >> there was someone checked in and the officer goes, did he have a mask on? did he take a mask off? i said, no, he never did take the mask off. he said, i'll be down in five minutes. they go, yeah, that's him. >> reporter: mangione had been out of touch with his family for months. in november sources tell abc news his mother filed a missing persons report in san francisco. the sources say investigators in pennsylvania had started interviewing his relatives, perhaps asking about internet posts in which mangione wrote about back pain, brain fog and sciatica at one point writing it's brutal to have such a life halting issue. his former roommate in hawaii said mangione struggled with a back injury. >> unfortunately, he did let me know that the severity of his back issue was such that it was very difficult to have physical relationships with women. that it made him painful. >> reporter: mangione's case has become a cause with admirers posting videos like this on instagram.

his x page gaining 300,000 new followers. >> the person that i knew eight years ago and the person that he allegedly has become today could not be more different. >> reporter: a former classmate left stunned. >> i am still in a state of disbelief that this kid that i knew from high school eight years ago is now the most high profile killer allegedly in the country. i just would never have had anything bad to say about him. >> reporter: since some of mangione's internet posts reference dealing with a debilitating back injury, one thing police are investigating now, george, is whether united healthcare or some other insurance company may have denied a claim. george? >> george: aaron, thank you very much. let's bring in luigi mangione's defense attorney thomas dickey. thank you for joining us. are you standing by the statement saying you see zero evidence tying mangione to the murder? >> that's correct. we had a brief hearing yesterday and there is one document, an arrest warrant from the state of

new york which merely referenced statutes. we've seen no evidence. that's why we're challenging the extradition at this point, so we can see some evidence and get a little more detailed information about the charges against luigi. >> george: what about the gun? what about the writings? >> well, as i indicated yesterday, i have not been made aware of any evidence that links the gun that was found on his person to the crime so these are things that we're looking to see. yesterday was fast. today's another day. we're looking forward to beginning our inquiry as to what evidence may or may not be out there. >> george: gun looks exactly the same as the one that was used. >> well, i mean, a lot of guns look the same. if you brought a gun in and said, well, it looks like that,

i don't even know if that evidence would be admissible. so i would argue it wouldn't be given much weight. that's why they do ballistic test, ballistic examination, test of all that, to try to match that. trust me, they're going to try to match that firearm to the incident by more than just, well, it looks like that. >> george: what about the writings? these parasites had it coming, talking about the health care industry, corruption, greed? that is all evidence, isn't it? >> well, i mean, certainly, it could be. i haven't seen any of that yet. one of the rules of evidence is, there's a rule of completeness. you have to take any writing or any document in its entirety because some things can be taken out of context. so, again, these are exactly the things that i'm looking to get my hands on. i'm hoping that we can get that maybe as early as today. again, i really can't comment on something that i haven't seen in its totality. >> george: how about the fake i.d.? same one used at the hostel?

>> well, again, whether or not that -- these are things i need to find out. i need to examine things. people put out certain things, parts of different things. i think any lawyer involved in this situation would want to see it all. >> george: did mangione tell you he didn't do it? >> i would never reveal any conversation between my client that would not be proper. there's an attorney/client privilege. i cannot and would not ever comment on that. >> george: mr. dickey, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you very much. >> george: michael? >> michael: thank you, george. now the latest on the wild fire out west. more than 3,000 acres have burned. thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. trevor ault is in the fire zone in malibu. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. so this fire's been burning now for more than 24 hours. we can still see some of the flames in malibu checkered across. we have been watching

helicopters grabbing water from the ocean and trying to contain some flames. it's dangerously close to the pacific coast highway earlier this morning. it is incredibly dangerous. overnight the destructive franklin fire spreading throughout malibu. santa ana winds exceeding 90 miles per hour. more than 3,000 acres burned. you can see fires jumping across roads and canyons. choppers working through the night trying to contain the inferno. >> it's coming straight down malibu canyon like a blow torch. >> reporter: at least seven homes destroyed and eight others suffering severe damage. >> firefighters on the line and in the air as they struggle to contain this stubborn fire. >> reporter: residents doing what they can to save homes. a high power hose to pull pool water out to try to stop the spread. >> it lands on a roof, lands on

a lawn and catches from there. then they go like dominos. >> reporter: flames coming within feet of city hall. the fast moving fire visible from pepperdine university's library, forcing students to shelter in place. >> the smoke has tripled in size. we started seeing actual flames in the canyon, like, coming onto campus. >> reporter: about 20,000 people have been told to evacuate in this immediate area. this is a place where a lot of nice homes. dick van dyke has evacuated, so has cher. it doesn't matter how nice your home is or how famous you are, this is a life threatening fire. robin? >> robin: what a scene there. trevor, thank you so much. want everybody to take care out there. here on the east coast, flash flooding, that's the fear as the region is hit with heavy rain. ginger, got those details for us? good morning. >> ginger: we still need rain. so many people are in drought. going to come fast and with a

lot of wind and in some places even a tornado threat. let's look at the map here. eastern carolina. appalachian's got their own winter weather advisories. look at the high wind alert up to maine. the flood alerts even for people that had all that lake effect snow. squall line comes through late morning, early afternoon for new york city. boston gets it through the later afternoon, early evening. that's when the heaviest rain, wind gusts 40 to 60 miles per hour. it's gonna hit you fast. some of the thunderstorms will come through. wow. more than the umbrella. behind this, freeze warnings as far back as del rio texas into north florida, south georgia. when you put that cold air over the lakes you turn on lake effect snow machine. one to two feet possible in some areas. >> robin: wow. >> ginger: in that way they are. they can handle it. they've had a lot already. >> ginger: ginger, thanks. now to syria and the fall of bashar al-assad.

moldings left behind. it is striking how much wealth the assad regime managed to accumulate. >> reporter: ninety percent of syrians live in poverty. millions of dollars worth of cars in his private garage show how much he took from his country. syria is heading toward economic collapse if a transition isn't established soon. you can see life is slowly creeping back here, but this country is also creeping towards an economic crisis. food prices are sky rocketing. in the last week alone the price of bread has rocketed by 900%. all this as the race to free syrian detainees has intensified. the white helmet a humanitarian organization, demanding assad turn over maps for the secret prison, pushing for their release. back in the u.s. the state department announcing a reward up to $10 million for phoergs leading to the recovery and return of austin tice. he's been missing in syria since 2012 and could be in one of those prisons. but no one knows where. i've been speaking to people here.

overwhelming feeling is they want time, time to figure out the future. one woman said to me, assad's family ruled syria for 50 years. it's not gonna change in three days. guys? >> michael: that is so true. will not change in three days. thank you so much for that. now the latest inflation report. chief economic correspondent rebecca jarvis has a reality check, with two weeks until christmas and chanukah. good morning, rebecca. >> rebecca: good morning, michael. nice to see you. we care about this report for two reasons. first because it tells us where prices are going into the holidays and because it will signal what the fed does with interest rates, which will impact your credit card bills next year when many people go to pay off that holiday spending. prices, as expected, are nudging a bit higher, up year ago. some economists call the last mile of inflation where we're

slowly moving to that 2% that is what's considered normal. we expect to see prices nudging a bit higher. in the categories where we're seeing the biggest increases, prices for used cars, air fare, clothing, and car insurance have rose as well as housing which has been a big contributor to inflation. now, for now, if you want to call it a benefit, the benefit of inflation is that retailers are scrambling to eke out winds from cash strapped consumers. they're still cutting prices. target, wal-mart, amazon, they all have holiday deals going on now. retail me not says big savings can be found on computers and electronics. 22% off there. 19% off clothing. they know we're stretched and they gotta put the deals out in order to get our spending. >> robin: thanks for always trying to find that silver lining. all right, rebecca. coming up bengals quarterback joe burrow's home broken into during "monday night football." he is the latest athlete targeted. we have the 911 call. >> george: the new twist in the case of the wisconsin father who faked his own disappearance,

apart by thieves at the same time. it's the latest burglary targeting a professional athlete. major sports leagues so concerned, they're warning players and their security to be on alert. this morning the sprawling ohio home of cincinnati bengals star joe burrow a crime scene after police say thieves tore through the property while the quarterback took the field for "monday night football" nearly 1,000 miles away in dallas. >> burrow side line, chased. touchdown bengals! >> reporter: authorities say the perpetrator shattered a bedroom window, ransacking the room. the first 911 call placed by olivia contin an influencer who is referred to as burrow's employee. >> someone is trying to break into the house. my daughter is there. this is joe burrow's house. she is staying there. he's at the football game. she's wondering what she should do?

none of the suspects have been arrested. but major leagues urging caution. the nfl warning criminals use public records to find players' addresses and conduct surveillance. then, by tracking team schedules and the social media accounts of players and their families, they wait until homes are empty, often during games. >> these are difficult to solve. there may or may not be pictures that may help identify them. if they don't take something that can be readily identifiable and possibly sold to somebody else, it does make it extremely difficult. >> deputies in ohio cleared burrow's house and said the woman inside the house was able to give a general list of what was missing. authorities also reached out to neighbors for video of the perpetrators. the nfl has urged players not to post in real time on social media and keep their valuables out of plain sight. very concerning here, george. >> george: okay, erielle. thank you very much. we're going to turn to the husband and father of three who

faked his own death and fled the country. he is in police custody. eva pilgrim here with the story. >> family thought he was dead for weeks, only to discover, police say, he planned it all. this morning authorities confirming the wisconsin father of three who allegedly faked his own disappearance no charges have been filed but a press conference is scheduled for later today. it's the latest twist in the case of the 45-year-old father who was originally reported missing in august when he didn't come home after kayaking on this lake. but authorities later say he faked his own disappearance. >> good evening. it's brian borgwardt. >> reporter: authorities made contact with him about a month ago. >> today is november 11th approximately 10:00 a.m. for you guys. i'm in my apartment.

i am safe, secure. >> reporter: tracking him to eastern europe, saying at the time he would face charges if and when he returned. >> there's a lot of concern, and the information that the green lake county has at this point leads us to an obstructing charge. >> reporter: he was first reported missing august 12th. police finding a capsized kayak and his car parked nearby. authorities searched the lake for 54 days, coming up empty. a break in the case coming when investigators discovered borgwardt's name had been checked by canadian law enforcement august 13th, the day after his disappearance. as they dug into his life, authorities say he took out a life insurance policy and moved money to a foreign bank before disappearing. >> if the local jurisdiction where he disappeared has charged him with anything, they can take those charges and go to the u.s. attorney general's office. and then he can be extradited

now started to talk to his relatives. they're hoping to learn more about a young man who scribbled about corporate greed and shouted incoherently on his way into court. an outburst from luigi mangione, shackled and handcuffed as he was dragged into court. sheriffs deputies wrestling him inside. he refused to waive extradition to new york, where he's charged with murdering united healthcare ceo brian thompson. >> when i enter my appearance, and for the record, he's pleading not guilty. i've seen zero evidence at this point. >> reporter: the judge denied bail. mangione kept quiet. head down. he's a threat to no one but this morning the nypd is alarmed by these posters outside the new york stock exchange and social media posts suggesting mangione is a martyr. a copy of the suspect's alleged writings says united healthcare was among corporations that have simply gotten too powerful, and these parasites simply had it

>> robin: this morning, music icon elton john welcoming gma inside his windsor home outside london as he chronicles his life and legacy after closing the curtain on touring. the documentary is beautiful. the way it book ends your career and just your rise to stardom, coming out, overcoming addiction. any part of your journey that captivates you still? >> i've forgotten about the early stuff so much. i went out and saw the footage of the first five years and the records we made, i was proud of what we had done. i was like, god, we did a lot of incredible work in those five years. 13 albums. come on. the records were amazing. i tend to forget that because i don't listen to my past anyway. >> robin: you don't listen to your own music? did i hear that correctly. >> if i made a new album, i would listen to it to see if i like it. but, no, i don't.

i'm very proud of what i have done but i'm always looking forward to the next thing. >> robin: never too late features never before seen footage from the rocket man's five decades long career. ♪ rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone ♪ and reveals intimate details about his beginnings. people have been familiar but to not to that degree about your father hating rock 'n' roll, and how you really wanted to prove him wrong. >> it was a different era, robin. it was the '50s. when rock 'n' roll came in it was like, wow, i couldn't believe it. my mother was on my side. she was very encouraging. she wanted me to be a musician. but there was a side of her that could be incredibly abusive and i was frightened of her. that never changed. it was difficult because they argued a lot. so all the arguments tend to be about me. i was fearful all my childhood. feared of being beaten in the street and stuff like that. i wanted to leave my childhood behind. it caught up with me when i realized i put everything into my work and there was nothing underneath it.

i was just a void. >> robin: you said early in your career you describe the time as emptiness within. how did you find the healing to get out of that loneliness? >> i was so fed up with being unhappy and being an addict and so fed up with going to bed at 9 a.m. in the morning. it took so long to get help. i know i'm an addict, i can do this myself. obviously, i couldn't. when i did ask for help, the whole world changed. >> robin: reflecting on what he's overcome on his rise to fame, elton remembers the bonds he formed along the way like with beatles front man john lennon. >> we had some great time together for a couple years. we hung out. we made music. i just had a wonderful friendship with him. i remember cycling to my local record store to buy sergeant pepper. here i am singing with him at madison square garden.

you can't make it up. >> robin: you talked about being on stage and it was electrifying for you. >> yes. >> robin: how has that impacted you creatively and other ways that you don't have that time on the stage anymore? >> it's wonderful. when i finished my tour in stockholm, i was very excited, very happy. i wanted to end by playing and singing as well as i ever had, if not better. i honestly don't miss going on tour. i'm 77. i have two young boys that need me. david nieds me. i love spending time with my boys. i love being here in this house. i understand why people find it hard to stop, but i didn't find it hard at all. >> robin: joining from their home, elton's husband david who co-directed the film. >> what i find so inspiring about elton's life story is the fact that you can go through so much adversity and set backs. >> robin: the documentary is spectacular.

you co-directed it with rj cutler. >> yes. >> robin: what was that experience like for you, david? >> i have really lucky. rj is such a great document arian. i knew i could bring a unique insight into the true elton and our family. >> robin: their two sons zachary and elijah on stage at elton's final u.s. show at dodger stadium in 2022. an ode to where his career sky rocketed nearly 50 years ago. >> there's things in our kitchen. there's that beautiful moment on stage at dodgers when elton wanted the world to see and feel why he made the decision to stop touring. >> robin: do they know what a big deal their dad is? >> they do and they don't. one of the things elton has always done, he does a show, comes home. he doesn't talk a lot about what he does. he doesn't play his music all the time in the house. he's daddy. ♪ i think it's gonna be a long

long time ♪ >> robin: he is holding close the memories and touring the world. >> i don't know how much time i have left. you think about that more when you get to my age. >> robin: while looking forward to what's next despite recent health challenges. >> i lost my eyesight in my right eye in july because i had an infection in the south of france it's been four months since i haven't been able to see. my left eye is not the greatest. so there's hope and encouragement that it will be okay. we're taking an initiative to try and get it better. at the moment that's really what we're concentrating on. >> robin: people have been concerned about your health challenges. can you just ex-pound more? >> david and i have blood tests every six months in los angeles. our health has never been better. it's unfortunate for anything of this to happen. i can't see anything. i can't read anything. i can't watch anything. >> robin: i'm still standing after all this time. >> yes, exactly. >> robin: the last question, the legacy question, elton john. what do you want your legacy to be? >> my music speaks for itself. my legacy is that i was a great
