now abc seven mornings live. >> a crucial decision delayed in the east bay. now five families in oakland putting pressure on the school board to keep their schools open. >> new evidence in the case against luigi mangione. detectives say they found a matching set of fingerprints at the scene of last week's shooting in new york city. >> evacuations still in place in southern california, and the fire is only 7% contained. that has not changed since yesterday. fire crews in malibu getting a bit of relief from the weather, but they say they are preparing for more wind today. >> here in the bay area, rain is back in the forecast. many of us waking up to a wet commute this morning, and right now we're

experiencing the first of three storms expected to roll through over the next week. >> good morning. it's thursday, december 12th. >> yeah. we're going to turn to drew. it was a damp drive from san jose and will be in and out of the rain all day long today. >> so we're finding a level one storm here has arrived late last night and it continues throughout the day today. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. over the last six hours, we have this front that is moving through as we speak, supplying us with the rain this morning. the heaviest is now pushing off to the east, but behind the front. now the center of the low is going to supply us with more showers throughout the day today. a closer view will show you that line of heaviest rain moved through over the last three hours. so now we're tapering to more scattered showers out there and for the morning commute. do anticipate some slick roads out there and some scattered showers. so it is a level one for the rest of today. this morning the showers are more scattered in nature. this afternoon we'll see another round of steady light rain moving through. it does turn breezy in spots once again.

with this rain moving through, it's not nearly as cold as you were yesterday. it feels mild out there, low and mid 50s for a lot of us this morning. so as we go hour by hour and future weather, here's eight in the morning. an isolated shower at best. it's later on today you can see another round of light rain starts to move through here right around lunchtime. there's that steady rain continuing into the afternoon, so take the umbrella with you. you'll need it throughout the day and the 40 niners game later on this evening. we do include showers in the forecast. so highs today. we're staying in the 50s with on and off showers. and we're tracking an even stronger storm moving in for the weekend. we'll talk more about that in eight minutes. let's check in with sue. see the wet keeps going. >> yeah we're busy this morning, drew. as you might expect, due to the weather, we've got about 20 separate incidents on the chp log. wet roads, standing water, flooding, pooling, ponding. keep those speeds lower today and give yourself plenty of room between yourself and the other guy. we've got some wet roads in marin. that rain has pushed

through. i drove through it and it was getting lighter as i got towards the city. this is san jose. we do have a problem. north 101 near oakland road. it's a spinout solo spinout facing the wrong way. it's blocking a lane of traffic and we're seeing some backups around mckee oakland road, as i mentioned. so again, take it easy this morning. give yourself lots of time. we've got lots to cover. >> now to the franklin fire still burning in malibu, la. fire officials say improved weather yesterday helped them make progress, but they expect winds to pick back up today. the fire has grown to more than 7000 acres. it is still only 7% contained. evacuation orders are still in place for thousands of people this morning. the power is out for many. pepperdine university got its power back yesterday, and now they say the shelter in place has been lifted. >> new developments in the east bay. parents have once again successfully delayed major changes to schools in oakland.

last night, the school board was set to finalize plans to merge ten schools to help solve its budget crisis. but after a contentious meeting, the vote was delayed. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live in studio this morning with the emotional pleas from students and parents. and what comes next. gloria. >> good morning. while the board did not take any action on closing or merging schools, some worry it's just delaying the process and adding to confusion. parents and students against school mergers spoke at this oakland unified school board meeting last night. the district is facing a projected $95 million budget deficit next year, and part of the issue is declining enrollment. usc considered consolidating ten schools into five to save up to $3 million, but didn't end up voting on this. the district is also considering some 30 measures to save money, but it's the school mergers that are drawing the most controversy. >> don't close schools. you already close my sister's school? >> no to the mergers.

>> at the end of the day, the school board has to be willing to make difficult decisions if it's in the best interest of the future. students for the school district. >> that's kerry harnell of a national education nonprofit. she says while no action means no closures for now, the budget problem is not going away. and she's right. this budget problem has been going on for years, and you may remember a previous plan to close and merge schools back in 2022 led to several members of the school board being recalled by the community. so it appears, at least for now, the community has won on this issue. again, reggie. >> gloria. thank you. a san francisco woman now facing charges for shoving an asian woman to the ground last year. that woman ultimately died from her injuries. the suspect is already facing charges for a similar incident earlier this year near the gilman playground in the bayview neighborhood. there, a 71 year old woman was seriously injured. the other incident, the deadly one, happened in july of 2023 on

third street and was initially considered an accident. the da's office says the suspect entered a not guilty plea yesterday. >> the union, representing hundreds of workers at the women's federal prison in dublin, is blasting the decision to permanently close. the prison has been plagued by scandal and was first temporarily closed in the spring. the bureau of prisons announced the permanent closure last week, citing infrastructure and staffing. the union's letter reads in part, quote, this decision was made without warning, without consultation and, most disturbingly, right before the holiday season, a time that should be spent with loved ones not in uncertainty and fear for the future. the group is considering legal action. >> breaking news from overnight u.s. officials say a missing american may have been found in syria. they say the person seen in this video that is circulating online could be travis timmerman. timmerman is a missouri resident who went missing from hungary earlier this year. u.s. officials say

they're working to provide support to the person in the video. thousands of people have been released from prisons across syria this week after rebels toppled the country's former president, bashar al assad. the manhattan district attorney is vowing to bring the suspect in the killing of the unitedhealthcare ceo to justice. d.a. alvin bragg said he's confident luigi mangione will be quickly extradited to new york to face a second degree murder charge. mangione is still fighting that extradition from a pennsylvania jail. here's abc news reporter andrew dymburt. >> this morning, authorities eager to get luigi mangione back to new york after charging himck with murdering unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. >> we will get the defendant here and bring him to justice through our court proceeding. >> mangione is fighting extradition from pennsylvania, where he was arrested and initially charged with gun and forgery offenses, insults the intelligence of the american people. according to investigators, mangione's fingerprints match a water

bottle and snack wrapper near the shooting, and the gun found in his possession matches shell casings at the scene. sources say mangione's notebook reveals an alleged plot to whack thompson at his parasitic bean counter convention. mangione's lawyer, asking people not to prejudge the case. >> we've seen no evidence. that's one of the many reasons why we're challenging the extradition at this point. >> police believe mangione may have been motivated by animus toward the health care industry, possibly stemming from a spinal condition and severe back pain. investigators are also taking a close look at the 3d printed gun or ghost gun, allegedly in his possession. homemade ghost guns are harder to trace. >> it's something we're seeing more and more in use. >> the nypd, expressing concern that thompson's alleged killer could be seen as a martyr. a law enforcement bulletin includes this image of a highway banner invoking the words found on the shooter's bullets. gofundme has repeatedly shut down fundraisers seeking money for mangione's defense. senator elizabeth warren, a critic of the health

get a bit of a lull tomorrow before a stronger storm moves in here on saturday. here's live doppler seven showing you the heaviest rain is now in the central valley. this move through early this morning around midnight, 1 a.m. it's now modesto. fresno. seeing the heaviest rain we have right now. some scattered showers, mainly in the east bay, the south bay and along the peninsula where it's mainly light right now. but the biggest issue like sue has been talking about this morning, we have a lot of standing water on our roads and it's still still dark outside. it can be hard to see that standing water, so just be aware of that. we're at a level one today for the rest of your thursday this morning the showers are more scattered in nature. this afternoon we see another round of steady light rain moving through, and this is all leading to slick and slow travel on your thursday. so taking a look at the rainfall chances throughout the day, we're going to see a little bit of a lull for the morning commute. what we'll find is just mainly cloudy skies, standing water on our area, roadways as you get going this morning and then this afternoon you can see those rainfall chances really do

on leave from google after giving birth to her daughter in june of 2023. she says her colleagues, not the company, informed her she was being laid off. she alleges in the lawsuit that five out of seven employees selected for termination from her team and two from an adjacent team, were also on parental leave, had recently taken or were about to take parental leave. >> i'd love to see them change their processes so there's not so many parents and women put in this situation. >> i mean, google definitely has a youth culture where they they hire young, keep young, promote young. >> a google spokesperson sent abc seven news a statement that says, in part, we completely disagree with these claims. we have zero tolerance for discrimination and take all concerns very seriously. they went on to say reorganization and eliminations were part of doing business and based solely on business needs. >> a conference in mountain view is bringing science fin to life. the humanoid summit showing off some of the newest

>> what was about to happen there? cut off right before that. was there about to dance? dustin, are you okay? okay. >> i don't know. stay. energy regulators have approved a $1.4 billion investment to expand electric vehicle charging and hydrogen refueling across the state. the funds will go out over the next four years to build about 17,000 new light duty chargers across california. the agency says at least half of these new chargers will be for low income and other disadvantaged communities that need them most. california currently has 152,000 chargers. >> the san francisco board of supervisors has unanimously approved a project to revitalize part of fisherman's wharf, according to mayor london breeds office. the plan involves expanding the waterfront plaza and promenade and renovating significant portions of pier 45. one shed on the pier was destroyed in a fire in 2020. the project would also upgrade the piers infrastructure to make it more resilient to earthquakes

because the winds are not terribly strong today. you don't need the large, sturdy umbrella. the one that can fit in your purse is best. we'll find those light showers throughout the afternoon and throughout the evening. here's about 830. more light rain is in the forecast, so if you're going to the niners game later on this evening at levi's, do have the poncho with you. we'll have scattered showers in the forecast. kickoff temperature right around 55 degrees. so today we'll find cloudy skies, light rain from time to time. temperatures mainly in the 50s. this afternoon as we take a look at the weekend. saturday we just had flood watches issued for the north bay, marin county, sonoma county, napa county, lake county, mendocino county. we'll find some of the highest rainfall on saturday. so here's future weather as we get you into saturday morning. we're starting to see that rain move into the north bay as we get up here right around eight 9:10 a.m, we're going to see a line of some very heavy rain move through when future weather starts to show you these areas of red. we could have thunderstorms within this

puddling will be the issue most of the morning. so here's our most severe problem. this is a sig alert. it is a stalled and crashed big rig. it is westbound 580 which is also eastbound 80. it's kind of confusing right near central. and it is blocking the two right lanes. you cae westbound 80 is slowing and eastbound 580 is slowing at that merge. so just a heads up. give yourself lots of time. this is one of many incidents. this just happens to be the most severe. we've got some drive times to show you already this morning. over an hour to get west 580 up and over the altamont. if you're heading south san rafael through southern marin, it's not a bad drive. they have it in the yellow, but it's still about 15 to 16 minutes. and highway four westbound. they're getting some rain right now and some fog. give yourself, as always, extra time. this morning you're looking at about a 20 minute drive into concord, guys. >> great reminder sue. thank

afternoon. steady but light in nature with temperatures in the 50s. and then we're just in and out of the showers all afternoon and all evening. so take the umbrella with you. you will need it today. highs will mainly stay in the 50s with overcast skies on and off light showers. it is a level one on the abc seven storm impact scale, but heading into the weekend, a stronger storm on saturday becomes a level two, a moderate storm. we will see a period in the morning where we have some very heavy rain moving through here, and when future weather shows you these pops of red, those are very intense. downpours will likely find first thing saturday morning. so rainfall totals on saturday for a lot of us, anywhere from a half of an inch to two inches of rain. we're watching portions of northern sonoma county, mendocino county, lake county. we could see a lot more rain in these areas. it's a similar area that got hit pretty hard back in november, so we'll watch that area very closely. in fact, the weather service watching that area as well. flood watches are posted for the north bay for that heavy
