three of our favorite words -- >> made in america! good evening. we begin tonight with breaking news in the ceo murder case. abc news has just learned that multiple search warrants have been issued and are being executed. authorities looking to get into the suspect's cell phone after getting into his backpack and searching the hostel where he stayed with strangers right before the murder. abc news also learning tonight that evidence is already being presented to a grand jury in their effort to get the suspect extradited back to new york. abc's senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky leading us off from late reportreport ing tonight. here's here in new york. >> reporter: tonight, investigators are executing search warrants to build the case against suspected killer luigi mangione. police are trying to get into the suspect's phone. and they've already searched the manhattan hostel where he stayed, and the backpack he wore when he allegedly gunned down

insurance ceo brian thompson. sources also tell abc news prosecutors are now bringing evidence blefore a grand jury, seeking an indictment to strengthen their case for his extradition to new york. >> we will get the defendant here and bring him to justice through our court proceeding. >> reporter: the district attorney declined to comment on the evidence, but police say fingerprints and ballistics tie the 26-year-old to the crime. tonight, mangione remains behind bars in pennsylvania, in a cell just like this one. >> before very long, he'll be brought back to new york, where he needs to be, facing the consequences of that horrific, audacious attack on the streets of new york city, which just really sent shockwaves through our whole community. >> reporter: and around the country, it touched a nerve. in seattle, this chilling message appeared briefly on a road sign, threatening other ceos. the city blaming a private construction contractors. at the university of pennsylvania, where mangione

graduated with engineering degrees, an assistant professor appeared to praise the ceo's murder, saying she's never been prouder to be a professor there. later saying she was regretful and doesn't condone violence. tonight, a woman that knew mangione in 2023 tells us she was stunned to learn he was arrested for murder. >> i was extremely shocked. i was like, wow, i was next to someone who did something so horrible. he was kind, super intelligent, super athletic. a good person that -- that i don't think he could have done anything like this. >> reporter: tonight, david, a pennsylvania judge has set an extradition hearing for december 30th, so, it's possible mangione is back here in new york by the new year. david? >> david: aaron katersky leading us off, thank you. we're also following a major storm at this hour, once again slamming the great lakes and headed into parts of the northeast. parts of i-90 paralyzed. multiple accidents across several states. look at these pictures from michigan tonight. an emergency crew at the scene

of an accident when a truck slammed into a vehicle there. no one hurt. ginger zee has the forecast, and morgan norwood with the images tonight. >> near blizzard conditions. >> reporter: tonight, the great lakes hammered with their third major whiteout in the past two weeks. south of buffalo, jackknifed tractor trailers spinning their wheels. ditches littered with cars. even plow trucks couldn't stay on the road. not far from there, drivers barely able to see the road on interstate 90 in hamburg. residents in buffalo opening garage doors to massive snow drifts. the system coming on the heels of a powerful storm that hammered the northeast overnight. drivers plowing through deep waters inside boston's ted williams tunnel. this latest system fueled by frigid air flowing over the warm great lakes. just look at the st. joseph pier and lighthouse on lake michigan. completely encased in ice. and david, we are certainly feeling that cold right here in new york city. tomorrow's wind chill, david,

just 15 degrees. >> morgan, thank you. let's get right to chief meteorologist ginger zee, tracking it all again tonight. hi, ginger. >> reporter: hey, david. more than 30 inches of snow from lake effect in orchard park, new york, just one of the spots that got slammed in the last 24 hours or so. and now, the streamers are still coming in, from michigan to buffalo, over to south of watertown. those are going to stay, those warnings at least, through tomorrow. an additional 6 to 12 inches on top of what you already have in some of those places. there's going to be the chill. the frost alerts all the way to southeast georgia. chicago, 0, better than this morning, which was sub-zero. you see the teens in the northeast. and then, the big pattern shift for the west coast. this is going to be a lot of rain for northern california, but helpful humidity for that franklin fire, david. >> david: let's hope so. ginger, thank you. we turn overseas tonight, and to syria, and to the stunning images today. the missing american found alive in syria after seven months in

captivity. travis timmerman had been taken in by a syrian family. in this video, appearing to be in good health. well h we have learned he is a missouri native. tonight, what he reveals here. what he heard in that prison while being held in his cell. and tonight, our james longman making his way to one of former president bashar al assad's homes, and what james was shown underneath that home. james longman from syria again tonight. >> reporter: these are the first images tonight of a missing american found alive in syria. travis timmerman, seen laying down, surrounded by a group of men. lying in this corner here as he was lying under the blanket. the missouri native was found walking barefoot in the street following the fall of the assad regime, after rebel fighters broke him out of prison, where he'd been held for seven months. >> i was in prison in a cell by myself and in the early morning of this monday, the monday of this week, they took a hammer

and they broke my door down. >> reporter: timmerman vanished from hungary earlier this year and says he was arrested after illegally crossing into syria from lebanon on a christian pilgrimage. describing the horrors of life behind bars in syria. >> did you hear the voices of torture, for syrians in the prisons? >> yes, i could hear the interrogations and the beatings. >> reporter: late today, i spoke with timmerman's mother, stacy, back home in missouri. >> happy tears. >> yeah. >> it was -- it was great. >> like this is going to be the best christmas ever. >> reporter: timmerman was mistaken for austin tice, the american journalist kidnapped 12 years ago. tice's parents speaking with our linsey davis late today. >> we're feeling very hopeful. we're waiting, and not exactly on pins and needles, but just very expectantly. >> reporter: while assad's government detained innocent people and tortured dissidents, the dictator was living a life of extreme luxury.

telling federal authorities to come to new jersey to see the drones yourself. here's erielle reshef. >> reporter: for weeks, those ominous drone sightings in the skies over the northeast, but tonight, the white house, fbi, and homeland security downplaying any potential threat. >> we have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or a public safety threat, or have a foreign nexus. >> reporter: the biden administration saying many of those so-called drones appear to be manned aircraft operating lawfully. but tonight, many authorities in new jersey say that's not enough. >> come on out, mr. kirby, and let's go on out one night about 9:30, 10:00, i'll go out behind my town hall and you can count them with me all night. >> reporter: in a letter today, senators from new york and new jersey expressing iing urgent concern. even members of biden's own party slamming the administration's response. >> they're flying over airports, or military bases, we should be
