out across the bay area and in tahoe. the snow is still coming down and causing problems on the road. >> i was on my way back to san francisco for my office holiday party. cannot believe that we are. we're stuck here. >> tom gump was on the wrong side of a big rig accident that shut down i-80 westbound today. several crashes caused problems, like this truck that slid off the road and down an overpass. steady snow has led to multiple spit outs, with chains required on both 80 and 50. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is here tracking this storm tonight with another one tomorrow. spencer, j.r. a stronger one tomorrow. but right now we're looking at a fairly light storm that's actually winding down. >> here's live doppler seven, and you can see that we have some light scattered showers, but widely scattered as uh. there's not much happening right now. this still, though, is a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. so through tomorrow morning, we expect more periods of light rain and showers. breezy at

times and we have rough surf. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight and you can see overnight not much will be happening, but by 5 a.m. we'll see showers redeveloping in the north bay and more widespread showers swinging through the north bay during the mid morning hours. and then things will calm down until late tomorrow night when that stronger level two storms storm moves in. now the rainfall totals from the current system by 11:00. tomorrow night will generally be under a third of an inch. in fact, generally under a quarter of an inch for most of the bay area, but higher totals up in the north bay. and of course, we have this rough surf advisory in effect until 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. we'll have wave heights up to nearly 20ft. so that means a dangerous sneaker, waves and rip currents. but things will be calming down after tomorrow morning. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast and a look at that stronger storm a little bit later. j.r. >> spencer, thanks so much. we look forward to that tonight on the peninsula. a ghost bike now stands to mark the spot where a cyclist was killed by a car. the deadly crash nearly a month ago

is driving conversations about safety on san carlos roads. crash happened on holly street near 101 overpass last month. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there tonight. traffic safety advocates returned to that spot. pushing for change. find the money and make a difference. >> a fatal bike accident in san carlos is bringing safety advocates together and renewing their push to make this busy overpass safer. >> frankly, we're fed up that this overpass continues to be such a dangerous place. >> cycling instructor tim ryan is holding the photo of 31 year old andrea bueno. the stanford researcher was killed last month while riding her bike off holly street, near the 101 freeway interchange. >> bicyclists and pedestrians continue to cross this overpass, riding right across on and off ramps to the freeway. it's just utterly dangerous. >> on thursday afternoon, ryan and other community members placed a ghost bike in honor of

bueno. >> and it's to remind all of us, whether we're walking by this bike, whether we're bicycling, whether we're driving by. it's something really awful happened right here. a preventable death. >> street safety advocates say they've been pleading with city officials to make this overpass safer. >> this is the only means of crossing 101. unless you bike 20 minutes north and then 20 minutes back up to belmont. >> the city had plans to build a separate bicycle and pedestrian bridge, but that changed during the 101 express lane project. former san carlos mayor john duggan addressed what happened to the ped bridge during a city council meeting two weeks ago. >> we were close. at one point. the project was delayed because of the 101 express lane project, and by the time that project was concluded, we were left having to reline up the regional and state funding sources. so, just to be clear, this remains a top priority of san carlos. >> safety advocate mike swire

says they're now back to square one. he and other advocates hope local officials at least find a short term solution. >> the really sad part of this is nobody listens to us unless somebody dies. it shouldn't be that way. when we say the streets aren't safe. unfortunately, we don't get a lot of positive feedback in san carlos. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> a sad update tonight to a story we've been following. one of the kids injured in a shooting at a butte county school last week may never walk again. the family of five year old elias wolford shared the update today on his health, and said he has not moved his legs. they say an mri showed a bullet had damaged his spinal cord. another boy, who is six years old, is also recovering from his injuries. investigators say the gunman used a ruse to get on the campus before opening fire during recess. he then took his own life. advocates for criminal justice reform are praising a record shattering act of clemency from the white house.

the president pardoned or commuted the sentences of roughly 1500 people today, including some of whom were once imprisoned at the women's prison in dublin. abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains the impact president joe biden thursday, announcing the biggest single day act of clemency in modern u.s. history. >> biden commuted the sentences of nearly 1500 americans who were released from prison and put on home confinement during the pandemic, as well as pardoning more than three dozen other people, including one man from california. >> from one perspective, it's surprising because up until the election, he was one of the presidents in recent memory who issued the fewest pardons. >> that's stanford law school professor bernadette meyler. and, she says president biden, pardoning his son hunter, opened the floodgates. >> there was so much political pushback that i think it meant that he really needed to exercise the pardon power in a way that didn't seem as

self-serving here in the bay area. >> former fci dublin inmates and their advocates are calling on biden to pardon the hundreds of women sexually abused by prison workers in the now shuttered prison. >> if biden can pardon his own son, he can grant clemency and commute the sentences of people who have suffered heinous abuse at the at the hands of federal officials. >> and while some former dublin inmates were commuted today, it wasn't because of any potential abuse. meanwhile, the professor says the use of the presidential pardon is being reshaped. >> the hunter biden pardon follows in a path that trump set us on, which is of pardoning people who are allies and in some way affiliated with the president. >> a path the incoming president will most likely continue down. >> trump has already said that he plans to pardon the january 6th rioters. on day one. >> america was founded on the

premise of second chances. >> the white house today saying the president will continue to review pardons and commutations in his final days in office, reiterating his intent on granting clemency to people convicted of nonviolent crimes and sentenced under outdated laws. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> president elect trump says he has met with the union that represents dock workers around the country to talk about automation. they went on strike in october and that was one of the issues. the strike did not impact the port of oakland, but could in the future. they did agree to wage increases, but nothing was hammered out on the automation of ports. in a social media post today, the president elect pointed the finger at foreign companies and said they should be hiring the dock workers instead of laying them off. uc berkeley is sending a message to international students that they should get to campus before inauguration day, with the real possibility of a travel ban after donald trump takes office. cal is warning students to prepare. stanford

also telling students to take this into consideration in trump's last administration. administration. the muslim majority countries travel ban stranded. thousands of students were abroad at the time. trump has mentioned wanting to reimpose those restrictions. time now for news to know where we help you get up to speed on several top stories tonight. we're focused on growing bird flu concerns, fueling questions about raw milk and causing problems at the san francisco zoo. here's the news to know about bird flu. avian flu continues to have major impacts across the country. the san francisco zoo has closed some indoor walk through bird areas due to its own concerns. according to kqed, a dead wild hawk found on zoo grounds tested positive for bird flu. zoo leadership says the temporary closure is a precautionary measure in a town called wilton, near sacramento. hazmat crews descended on a poultry farm

facing an outbreak. it's the fourth bird flu outbreak in the county this year. wildlife officials say all the birds were humanely euthanized. workers there are trying to mitigate the spread of the virus. there have been no human cases reported in sacramento county, but the cdc reports 58 confirmed cases across the country, with 32 of them in california. and there's a growing concern about drinking raw or unpasteurized milk. in los angeles county, they're investigating two possible cases of bird flu in cats that drank raw milk. they both died and had a rare positive result for the avian influenza. as for people, public health officials have linked at least ten illnesses to raw milk across california since a recent recall, but none of them were bird flu cases. it was a essentially that is a must win game for the san francisco 40 niners, taking on the los angeles rams on a rainy night at levi's stadium. abc7 news sports

director larry beil joins us live tonight. what a disappointing game all around. >> a disappointing game, a disappointing season filled with injuries. the niners and rams, they both needed this game to have a realistic shot at the playoffs. the niners could not do anything on offense and they lose 12 to 6. weather definitely a factor here. and you know what? the grinch was in the house which seemed appropriate. he stole the niners playoff spot. earlier this week deebo samuel was on social media asking for more passes to be thrown his way. brock purdy hits him in stride. dropped. that might have been a touchdown. deebo three catches for 16 yards. late fourth quarter with the niners driving for a potential game winning touchdown here. and brock purdy airmails this ball picked off. niners lose 12 six. here's abc seven sarah hodges with reaction. >> well larry the 40 niners watched their playoff hopes slip away in a rainy, lackluster divisional showdown here at levi's. not a touchdown thrown by either team. brock purdy he took that personally, especially the interception he threw in

driver of the car suffered a major medical emergency. seconds before the crash, a passenger was also hurt. both are expected to survive. ralph said he called 911 and then went to check on both people who were in the car. a live look out at the airport in oakland. and there are new developments tonight with the name change scenario. the port of oakland is appealing last month's ruling, which blocked it from using san francisco bay oakland international airport. a judge said it infringed upon san francisco international airport's trademark, specifically by using san francisco. the name change took place in march in the airport, even added new signage. it could be a few more months before the appeal gets resolved. united is becoming the first airline to use apple airtag tracking for luggage. customers will now be able to securely share the location of their own airtag through the united app. this will help customer service agents track down and recover luggage faster. united's vice

productivity. nvidia is also partnering with san jose state to better prepare students to use ai in future careers. the rain did not stop people from lacing up the ice skates tonight at san francisco's union square. tonight was the silent skate party. instead of having music blasting like normal, the speakers were turned off and skaters were given headphones. they could then choose one of three radio stations to listen to as they made their way around the rink. the weather wasn't about to stop. one woman who was planning on hitting the ice no matter what. >> well, i bought my tickets already, so i was going to come regardless unless they shut down the rink tomorrow. >> could draw a bigger crowd to union square. that's the first day of the winter walk. it will feature food trucks, bars and all sorts of wintry themed decor. then on saturday, it will be full of people for santacon 2024. time to get a check now of the weather. spencer christian here with our forecast. you're going to lace up the ice skates

too. i'll just watch. i think i'll be a spectator. love that tree, though. at union square. >> here's a look at our our satellite radar composite image. you can see just a few showers lingering in the bay area right now. most of the rainfall has moved well to our east, and it's snowing over in the sierra right now. we have relatively calm winds around the bay area. a little breezy in a few spots, but not gusty at all. here's a live view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco, where it's currently 52 degrees. we have mid 50s in oakland, hayward and san jose, low 50s at redwood city and half moon bay. nice view in emeryville right now. traffic is moving much better now than it was during the rush. 47 in santa rosa, low 50s at petaluma, napa, fairfield, livermore, concord, 54 degrees. and as we look across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, these are our forecast headlines. overnight light scattered showers will continue, but they'll be widely scattered. tomorrow a few morning showers, mainly in the north bay. and then friday overnight tomorrow night overnight into saturday morning,

stronger storm develops. it will be rainy and windy. but our current storm, which is weakening, is a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through tomorrow morning. more periods of light rain and showers won't be continuous. rainfall, breezy at times and rough surf. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight. notice not much will be happening between midnight and 5 a.m. then after 5 a.m, another surge of rainfall moves mainly through the north bay, although a few locations south of the golden gate will get some rain out of this and then not much during the daytime hours, except up in the north bay and then late tomorrow night. that next storm, that stronger storm moves in and that's going to be a rain producer. it's going to bring strong, gusty wind as well. now, rainfall totals from the current storm will generally be under 2/10 of an inch up in the north bay, about a third of an inch in novato and napa. and then farther north, we'll get higher rainfall totals. we have rough surf, high surf advisory in effect until 4 a.m. uh- wave heights will reach about 18 to 22ft at the max. rip currents and dangerous sneaker waves are

possible. stay away from the surf if you don't have to be there. we have a wind. high wind watch that will be in effect from 1 p.m. tomorrow. actually, friday afternoon into saturday afternoon winds out of the south 25 to 35mph. gusts up to 45mph. the possibility of some downed trees and power outages. we have a flood watch in effect for the entire north bay from 2 p.m. tomorrow to 4 p.m. saturday, uh- flooding possible in streams, creeks and roads. and of course, there's that coastal flood advisory for the bay shoreline and the interior north bay valleys due to king tides. that's in effect until 1 p.m. monday. and here's the forecast animation for that next storm that will come in tomorrow night into saturday. it will be a significant and impactful rain producer, and it will produce heavy snow in parts of the sierra. okay, overnight lows here in the bay area, mainly mid to upper 40s. highs tomorrow up to about 60 degrees. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. level one storm for tomorrow morning. level two storm tomorrow night into saturday a break on sunday.

a sporting event in the world. we're getting a good idea about the financial impact it will have here in the bay area. matches will be played at levi's stadium in santa clara, and the bay area host committee says the tournament could bring in $630 million. but in order to make money, you have to spend money. security alone is expected to cost up to $50 million. the committee is also helping pay for improvements at levi's stadium. the forty-niners reached the super bowl last season. that was great. they will not even reach the playoffs this year. larry beil is here with sports. >> j.r. the 40 niners had to beat the rams to keep their slim postseason hopes alive in a week. when deebo samuel said he wanted more opportunities, more targets. had a chance at a touchdown right there. dropped.
