>> merry christmas. >> or maybe you just need a little love. actually, for the holidays. then again, maybe you're looking for something a little different, a little grittier, a little bloodier. something like terrifier three, where silent, murderous clown named art is disguised as santa and spreading terror, not joy. it's a slasher film. and believe it or not, it's also a hit christmas film. holiday horror now is as much a part of the season as candy canes. >> i grew up loving christmas horror movies. >> damien leone is the film's director. >> being so in love with the maniac santa claus trope, i could turn art the clown into the maniac santa claus. it puts a fresh spin on him, and terrifier three has become a viral sensation. >> fans professing their love for art the clown. david howard

thornton is the man behind the mask. did you expect him to become this much of a sensation? >> no. when we did terrifier one, we did that film on $35,000. it was just a low budget independent film. we were just hoping people would be able to see it. we didn't expect the character to become as big as he has. we had hope, but we didn't expect it. >> in its original theatrical debut in october, terrifier three became the number one movie in america. the micro-budget indie film, made for less than $5 million, beat out the second week of the $200 million budget. joaquin phoenix led joker two. >> every time we think this movie plateaus, it exceeds our expectations. >> the blood and guts flick is being rereleased in theaters for two days on christmas eve and christmas day. the movie filled with extreme gore. the audience reactions say it all. >> i want to walk the line of pushing the boundaries, giving especially gorehounds something

fresh, but then maintaining a level of mass appeal where you get as many people into the theater as possible. i think the art the clown character does have this sort of mass appeal. >> what is it about this version of art that has actually captivated so many people? >> you think you think people are just dying to hang out by their christmas tree with art the clown? >> i think it's the people just find him kind of endearing in some demented way. and i think that's what draws people to him. i think people also love a really fun christmas horror movie. >> terrifier three is just one of dozens of slashers that you and your family can enjoy this festive season, along with your turkey. you can be terrorized by an ax wielding maniac in thanksgiving. place your bets on who will survive the night, and krampus, or sing along to your favorite zombie musical, anna and the apocalypse. >> why does this time of year the holidays, work so well for

these types of movies? >> i think it's already a terrifying holiday. the whole thing is centered around a strange man who's sneaking into your house in the middle of the night while you're sleeping, right? sure. the truth is, i think that it's because it's such a comforting, familial, wholesome holiday. right? the antithesis of horror. so when you feel really secure and really safe, i think that makes you more adventurous as an audience member. >> alison willmore is a film critic for new york magazine and vulture. i feel like big stars really used to be the face of a lot of these holiday movies that used to come out. >> yeah, you definitely used to see everyone from jimmy stewart to arnold schwarzenegger would make a christmas movie, and it was just part of something you could do in your career as a giant movie star. but i think that we have started to associate the christmas movie now is less the movie stardom of what they're offering, and more just the volume like you can find so many of them. >> today's viewers have an abundance of choices, including

holiday films focused more on romance like lindsay lohan's our little secret on netflix. >> you cannot tell anyone about us, but if you want to scream, try. >> a creature was stirring. movie released by shudder, a streamingervice entirely devoted to horror. sam zimmerman is the vp of programing. he says ghost stories have been a part of christmas for centuries. >> a christmas carol and charles dickens, which you might not think it but is kind of the preeminent, most popular, most iconic christmas horror story. >> but it was 1974. black christmas, about a serial killer hiding in a sorority house that brought holiday horror to the masses. hello? >> pulls on that old like urban legend about the call is coming from inside the house. that is always frightening. >> there are no elements of hallmark in that one. >> no, black christmas is really scary. billy the killer you never see. he's really just, like, kind of an eyeball and a creepy voice. >> by the 1980s, the christmas

slasher had gone mainstream with the release of silent night, deadly night in 1984. >> you've made it through halloween now. try and survive christmas. >> that seemed like a watershed moment for this subgenre. >> it was a big moment. it came at a time where a lot of things were converging, because you had this idea of a of a santa with an ax. he's killing people willy nilly. the tv advertisements were famously run during football games and daytime tv. >> little house on the prairie, the film sparking a wave of protests to save our kids. now the holiday slasher is here to stay. what do you make of people who say these movies are ruining the holidays? >> there's such this wealth of holiday content. it's hard to really object to there also being some of these action movies or violent movies, slasher movies, because it's not like there's a shortage of alternatives if you're looking for them. >> but if horror isn't for you, perhaps turn to a classic like home alone. >> do you watch a movie like home alone? look at the violence

film the banshees of inisherin, you do like me, i don't? >> do you like me yesterday or did i? >> yeah, but it's his real life role as a dedicated father and an ambassador for people living with disabilities that is now front and center. >> i can tell you that the rewards of being part of this community and part of this extended family are so extraordinary. >> the actor opening up about his son james, who's living with a rare genetic disorder called angelman syndrome, which affects the nervous system and causes neurological problems and developmental delays. >> do. >> we met up in chicago, where his colin farrell foundation was hosting its winter ball gala. you are braving the chicago weather not for a film role, but for a cause that is near and dear. how much does it mean to you? >> it means a lot to me. i mean, my son means a lot to me. the community that i have been fortunate enough to become familiar with over the last 15

years or so. i just want to try and shine more lights on areas that really need some attention. >> james's diagnosis, made when he was nearly three, the rare disorder affecting about one in 12,000 to 20,000 people. most have problems walking, talking or caring for themselves. >> the spectrum is pretty broad for our children who have angelman syndrome. some have words. james is non-verbal and some can move around perfectly. james is not one of those, but he's ambulatory. he needs a lot of help. >> how is life for him and for you? >> myself and james's mother have benefited greatly as parents and carers. for james, he's good man. he's in a really good place. i don't believe james understands the concept of time or calendar dates. so james in many ways exists in a state of grace. he's just he's in the forever now. it's really quite amazing.

>> the father and his now 21 year old son recently appearing on people.com to talk in depth about his son's medical condition for the first time. you have james, your oldest, and you have henry. how do you balance the two as best i can? >> i'm on a unicycle with, you know, bowling pins. but we i think we have a good thing. you know, it's me and the two boys, and they get along good. they love each other. >> i have a son who has some developmental delays, and i remember he wasn't hitting milestones. he wasn't walking at one year old. yeah. at what point did you realize something? >> james didn't ku he didn't make baby sounds. and we all know baby sounds is. maybe i come across like an idiot, but there was a very particular thing that henry started doing very early on that because james was my first child, i just i just thought he was a silent child. >> farrell, drawing from his personal experience to connect with the greater community of people living with disabilities. you talk about the importance of service to your fellow man. many

people remember that moment when you were running the marathon and in dublin, and you were pushing a friend in the wheelchair? how did that come about? did you know you were going to do that? >> yeah. yeah, yeah. >> emma was born with one of the cruelest conditions called epidermolysis bullosa eb, known as butterfly. butterfly children, because the skin is so sensitive and children often die early with that condition. emma's lived. she was 40 this year. and so about two years ago, i said to her, listen, we should do a marathon someday. you and me. i'll push you. >> afterwards, the feeling must have been really pretty. amazing. >> easily one of the most special days of my life. i only pushed it the last 4k, thank god. >> farrell says he's fortunate to have the means to provide care for james. >> we have been able to provide a certain amount of support for james that very few families can provide, you know, so that is not lost on me at all. >> james is 21. on the one hand, he's a young adult. but on the other hand, he's a young adult

with a disability. but in this world, though of disabilities, when a child turns 21, the bottom falls out. >> there's no support systems as far as therapies and after school care. it all goes out. and that's when parents are just like, oh, what do i do now? >> he's determined that his foundation will make a difference. one of its goals creating access to affordable community housing and day programs. >> the joys and the successes, which will be many. the benchmarks we will all share in them. and we will be there for you and with you on this evening. >> farrell is less celebrity and more ally, a kindred spirit. what is that like when you look into the eyes of these families and these kids? >> i just love our community. i just love them all. yeah. i love seeing our kids. >> you said something that's almost become a motto. i think, of the foundation. i want the world to be kind to my son. yeah. is kindness, of course. and support what this is all about? >> yeah. we're all. we're all in this chaos together.
