powerful storm strikes the cleanup. ahead and reaction from rattled residents. and a lot of people are asking, what do you do if there's a tornado warning? we've got expert guidance for severe weather. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. it has been quite the day when it comes to our weather. cleanup is underway and will likely continue for several days. in the aftermath of the tornado that hit scotts valley in santa cruz county. the national weather service has rated that storm in ef one. it flipped over vehicles and injured several people, and abc seven news reporter anser hassan went to scotts valley and spoke to people who saw it firsthand. >> i started this was the view at lunchtime from bruno's bar and grill in scotts valley. a fast approaching tornado. >> it was like starting over that way, and it just started coming this way, so it was pretty crazy. >> what did you guys think? do you think it was going to hit? >> at first, yeah. but then it

started disappearing. so then we're all good. >> like many jasmine dobeck says a tornado ripping through scotts valley isn't something she ever expected, nor the aftermath it left behind. >> yeah, i was not expecting to do that much damage, especially flip a car, because cars are pretty heavy. so it was it was like, wow. >> the national weather service confirmed it was a tornado that touched down around 130 saturday afternoon. i've been a law enforcement officer and, you know, santa cruz county for almost 28 years, and this is the first i've experienced. >> a tornado touched down in our area. it was it was shocking. >> obviously, scotts valley police captain scott garner says the damage was extensive. about six cars flipped debris thrown around, which did significant damage to businesses and cars parked along the tornado's path. p-g-and-e's power lines and poles torn down. this tree was ripped up from its roots and landed on part of the middle school. captain garner says police and fire had to help evacuate people trapped by downed power lines and parking lots. he says in all, five

people were injured, but none with life threatening injuries. >> their main concern is, you know, getting people out of there, making sure the power lines are safe. power is cut off, vehicles that are turned over aren't, you know, spewing, spewing fuel. >> with the power out, cars made detours through blackened out shopping lots. restaurants like burger king and taco bell closed for business, but when the tornado hit, everyone rushed for safety. >> the first thing we were trying to get the customers inside just in case it was something worse. and then the doors started flapping open and close. open and close. so we were grabbing them to close them. and then when we came, we saw the going down, the tornado going down, and then it ended. it was just a blink of eye. >> mount hermon road, which is one of the main roads through scotts valley, suffered extensive damage. authorities say it will remain closed all night so crews can continue cleanup. in scotts valley, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> now, tornadoes are rare but not uncommon in california. the national weather service

shared this graphic here today. on average, the state sees 11 tornadoes per year. typically, they happen in the spring and fall. most of the time, the storms are weak in intensity. boy, and what a day it has been. we started with that tornadon. we warning in san francisco. francis. then the actual tornado hitting scotts valley. i mean, this is very unusual, and i think a lot of people didn't know what to do. >> yeah, they didn't know what to do. i had friends text me and panicked. and some we had just such varying reactions. some slept right through it, some got their shoes on. i want to show you how calm it is right now with live doppler seven, we're seeing clear skies. winds have calmed down, but check out what it was like during the five 6:00 hour in san francisco this morning. and that's why the tornado warning was issued. there was a line of strong thunderstorms moving right through the area. luckily, no tornadoes in san francisco, but there was one in the afternoon in scotts valley. and i just want to show you what that looked like. also with live doppler seven, during the 1 to

3:00 hour, we saw another line of thunderstorms moving through the area. and as unser said, right around one 3145 is when we saw the tornado being reported, especially came up through social media first and then was confirmed by the national weather service to be an ef one. winds were howling. in fact, some of our strongest winds over 80 miles an hour. pablo point in marin county, 85 miles an hour. sfo 83 miles an hour. even monterey, close to 78mph. and many areas in the north bay had over three inches of rain during the 24 hour rainfall. like santa rosa, san rafael, even over 3.5in. so things are starting to calm down. but there is a frost advisory in effect, and i'll talk about how cold it will be tomorrow morning, as well as our next upcoming storm. >> dylan getting ready to bundle up. francis. thanks. well, check this out. the scene in livermore where two cars almost completely

submerged in a flooded underpass. this was at marietta and stanley boulevards. that area of road was closed for several hours today, while crews worked to clean up debris. it's been reopened, but police urge drivers to avoid flooded roads. over in sonoma county, at least two drivers had to be rescued after getting trapped in flood waters there. this morning. firefighters helped a motorist on rohnert park expressway at stony point road and then later in the day, another person was rescued on slosser road in windsor. san francisco is busy cleaning up. the storm that rolled through this morning was so intense it triggered ang was tornado warning that has never happened before in the city. the high winds and heavy rain left behind plenty of damage. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has a closer look. >> reporter but it was the scariest sound i've ever heard. like, this loud roar is the best way to describe it. >> carmen marin woke up to heavy rain and strong winds outside her family's folsom street home in the mission. and then a

crash. >> then we came out and we saw both of the trees down. and then, unfortunately, our car was in the way. >> the family car was totaled by the large trees. other cars on folsom street were crushed, too. >> and then when i finally looked at the app to see what that message was, it said tornado warning. >> thousands of people in san francisco and daly city got this tornado alert early saturday on their phones. it expired a short time later, but many swear it felt like a twister moving through. >> we heard a swirling like this going around and around. it was like it just came all the way through like that. like a tornado. it was a tornado. >> i mean, it's a tornado warning, which confused me because i'm like, tornadoes are like in kansas and stuff. and so i thought, i thought it was an earthquake because it was the house was shaking. >> a toppled tree took out alex's front window. the fierce winds left a trail of debris through many parts of the city. department of public works crews

on cleanup duty. >> we're trying our best to get it together and make sure everyone is safe. and we're safe. and, you know, it's a mess everywhere. every street, every other street. trees are falling. just a mess. >> across town, large trees fell on fulton street. the cleanup lasting for hours. here and in golden gate park, several giant eucalyptus trees came down on jfk drive and chain of lakes drive east onto boston mission. this tree also toppled. san francisco fire department says it got more than 100 calls about the storm. >> as it relates to the damage that we're seeing here in san francisco, we're seeing it spread throughout san francisco. we're seeing a lot of it in the avenues, mission district, downtown san francisco. nobody has been immune to the effects of this storm. >> in san francisco, this giant eucalyptus tree, one of several which have toppled here in golden gate park. and check it out, the roots alone are about ten feet tall. san francisco fire department says the good

news. no injuries reported from this incident, and the cleanup continues across the city. in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> now, many people in san francisco got woken up by an alert for a tornado warning and were left wondering if it was real and what they should do. emergency officials say always take a severe weather warning seriously. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with some experts and got some guidance on how to respond. >> downed trees and smashed cars. saturday's storm bringing along with it the first ever tornado warning for san francisco. it comes just one week after the bay area braced amid a tsunami warning. >> in one week, a tsunami warning and a tornado warning. that's pretty remarkable in terms of how often we get those. >> san francisco state professor emeritus john monteverde studies severe storms and says with climate change comes more atmospheric rivers. >> that's the way we expect climate change to manifest with

storms that produce more rainfall and intense rainfall, and embedded in those bands could be circulations like the one that produced the tornado that issued that that resulted in the tornado warning. >> i've been a bay area resident resident my whole life. we've gotten like a bunch of warnings for like, other weather related things, and i feel like nothing serious has ever really happened. >> i was confused, i woke up and i've never heard of anything happening around this area, so i was just more confused than anything.more confused than >> it's not fun to be woken up at 5:50 a.m, and it's alarming and it's unsettling. but the reality is that we in san francisco are trending toward more frequent and intense extreme weather events. >> emergency management officials reminding people to take the national weather service alerts seriously. >> these alerts are based on very objective criteria and weather modeling, and that they're only sent again when there is a significant probability of a life safety hazard occurring. >> and as for this morning's

alert directing people to a basement. >> we completely understand that many buildings in san francisco don't have basements, or the lower floors might not be accessible. so in those situations, in the event of a future tornado warning, if you don't have a basement, the next best thing is an interior room away from windows on the lowest floor possible. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> over in the east bay. we're working to learn more about this eye catching sight along i-80.is it appears a barge drifted from its moorings. it's now along the coast between emeryville and berkeley. no word on where it was anchored or who owns it. officials tell us a tugboat will try to pull it back into the bay tomorrow during high tide. and this is a look at all of the power outages right now in the bay area. this is according to p-g-and-e's. the map is looking a lot better than it did about 12 hours ago. at one point, more than 200,000 customers were without power in the bay area. it was down to about 31,000 by 9

the suspect in that case had triggered an amber alert. police say she was forced into a car being driven by 25 year old noah pimentel late last night. no other details are available. in san francisco, an on duty police officer struck and killed a pedestrian with the patrol vehicle. this morning, medics were on the scene to help at bayshore boulevard and industrial street. the man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but later died. the sfpd traffic collision unit took over the investigation. moving now to the latest on speaker emerita nancy pelosi. her office says she underwent a successful hip replacement surgery today and is doing well and is on the mend. the 84 year old pelosi fell while walking down a staircase at the grand ducal palace in luxembourg. she was part of a congressional delegation commemorating 80 years since the battle of the bulge. pelosi's spokesperson says she won't be able to attend any of the other ceremonies, but will continue working. this is

the last weekend to visit the jewish contemporary museum in san francisco. it's closing for at least a year because of financial issues. they're gradually reducing staff and closing its galleries, all in hopes to secure a better long term future for the museum. this is considered to be like a jewish time for rest and rejuvenation. tomorrow is the final day, and admission is free to the public. all right. once again, francis, joining us now. boy, you've been working overdrive. >> yes, but tomorrow will be a good day to go out to do some of the cleanup, because we will have some partly sunny skies, especially in the morning. however, you'll want to bundle up. >> oh, and the rain isn't over in the forecast. >> not in the seven day forecast, but for tomorrow it is. so that's some good news. we could use the break. and right now we're seeing lots of clear skies over parts of the bay area. but i still wouldn't rule out possibly a scattered sprinkle or shower here and there, mainly in the north bay as we show you live shot of san francisco. things are cooling down to

the 40s in some locations in san francisco. it's currently 51 still oakland 47. a hayward 48, san jose 49, and redwood city and half moon bay at 45 degrees. and also from sutro, where we're looking at san francisco again in santa rosa. it's 41, but check out petaluma already down to 39 degrees. napa 42 and fairfield, concord and livermore in the mid 40s. so those winds were howling today, but they are so calm right now. many areas reporting very little wind, maybe only a few miles, three miles an hour at sfo. at this point, as i show you, with the wind gusts are forecasted to be tomorrow. we're expecting the. we're expecting the winds to also remain light. so that is some good news for people who need to do some repair work. however, with these light winds and clear skies, there is a cold weather advisory through parts of mendocino county. this starts at 2 a.m. and continues until 8 a.m.

tomorrow. in addition to that, there's also a frost advisory for the north bay, some of the valleys and the hills, the east bay hills, and also the santa clara hills. this continues overnight until 9:00 tomorrow morning, where some temperatures will drop below freezing, possibly as low as 31 degrees. and this could affect your sensitive and tender plants. so let's take a look at lows overnight. we'll see some near freezing temperatures in the north bay like santa rosa 32. even around the bay it's a lot cooler than normal 43 degrees in san francisco and oakland, san jose 42 degrees and livermore 38 degrees. so we have the coastal flood advisory continuing till monday afternoon. this is all due to king tides. tomorrow's high tide at seven feet a little over seven feet will be at around 1022. so we could see some minor flooding for the areas highlighted there. in green along the bay and parts of the north bay, especially during the morning hours. and there's also still a

flood alert and warning through tomorrow afternoon. flooding still possible, especially on the low lying streams, roads, rivers and creeks. and now we're not getting much rain. but this flood alert still in effect due to excessive runoff. tomorrow's highs will be on the cool side, generally in the 50s for everybody. san francisco, oakland 57, san jose 59. we'll see some mid and low 50s through parts of the north bay. lakeport 53, napa 54 degrees. and then let's take you to the futurecast. so tomorrow we'll see sunshine in the morning, some passing clouds in the afternoon. and then monday morning is when this next system passes through. and that's going to be a level one storm. but you do have a chance to dry out and enjoy some of the sunshine. but it is going to be a cooler day, especially during the morning start. >> all right. we will prepare accordingly. francis. >> thank you.

starts right now. >> a wild scene in scotts valley today where a tornado hits this afternoon. cleanup is still underway and will last until tomorrow. the national weather service confirmed it was indeed a tornado that touched down at about 1:30 p.m. about six cars flipped over, multiple power lines went down, and there was significant damage to businesses and cars parked along the tornado's path. police say five people were injured. a law enforcement officer and, you know santa cruz county for almost 28 years, and this is the first i've experienced. >> a tornado touched down in our area. >> it was it was shocking. >> obviously, a tree was ripped from its roots and as you can see, landed on part of the middle school. police and fire helped evacuate people trapped

by downed power lines in parking lots as well. the power was knocked out for some areas in petaluma. the storm caused a creek to rise above its bank and flood out a christmas tree lot. mickelson christmas trees saw their field filled with water. countless christmas trees, decorations, bales of hay and inflatables just washed away. owner trevor mickelson says the storm hit at the worst possible time. >> this is a big weekend. this is one of the last big weekends people are supposed to be coming out here. you know, we bring a lot of joy to the community. and families are supposed to come out here, you know, visit santa and going on tractor rides and buying a christmas tree. and now, i mean, we're just it's disheartening. >> despite the damage, the lot stayed open today. the owner says they went back to their roots of how they started their business 15 years ago before buying the lot. employees salvaged what they could and sold their trees from the side of the road. take a look at

this. a viewer sent us this video of a levee breached in redwood shores, near the redwood life development project. he says it flooded in the same area last year, but was fixed. nasty road conditions in the sierra mountains as heavy rain and snow made travel treacherous. that, though, didn't stop some drivers from braving the conditions to get out to lake tahoe to go skiing. road crews plowed as much as possible, but hazards remained. some drivers regretted their drive up. >> we knew it was going to snow, but we didn't know it was going to be this this bad, right? >> do you have any advice for people who are trying to drive in conditions like this? >> stay home, stay home. >> meanwhile, in baxter, interstate 80 eastbound was shut down for a time because of several spinouts in the mountains. drivers were told they'd have to wait for hours to keep driving east. cal dot began requiring all cars have tire chains on between baxter and the sierra nevada line. the nevada

state line, except for cars with four wheel drive and snow tires. a recall has been ordered on certain raw milk products. all valley milk, simply bottled raw cow milk and dairy milk. raw cow milk in court. half gallon and gallon sized plastic jugs dated december 23rd through 30th. the california department of food and agriculture says the bird flu virus has been found in a raw milk tank. retailers are being told to pull the product from their shelves, and customers should throw away any raw milk at home. on the peninsula, a ghost bike now stands to mark the spot where a cyclist was killed by a car. the deadly crash is driving conversations about safety on san carlos roads. that crash happened on holly street, near the 101 overpass last month. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was there tonight when traffic safety advocates returned to that spot. pushing for change. find the money and

make a difference. >> a fatal bike accident in san carlos is bringing safety advocates together and renewing their push to make this busy overpass safer. >> frankly, we're fed up that this overpass continues to be such a dangerous place. >> cycling instructor tim ryan is holding the photo of 31 year old andrea bueno. the stanford researcher was killed last month while riding her bike off holly street, near the 101 freeway interchange. >> bicyclists and pedestrians continue to cross this overpass, riding right across on and off ramps to the freeway. it's just utterly dangerous. >> on thursday afternoon, ryan and other community members placed a ghost bike in honor of vaya bueno. >> and it's to remind all of us whether we're walking by this bike, whether we're bicycling, whether we're driving by that something really awful happened right here. a preventable death. >> street safety advocates say they've been pleading with city

officials to make this overpass safer. >> this is the only means of crossing 101. unless you bike 20 minutes north and then 20 minutes back up to belmont. >> the city had plans to build a separate bicycle and pedestrian bridge, but that changed during the 101 express lane project. former san carlos mayor john duggan addressed what happened to the ped bridge during a city council meeting two weeks ago. >> we were close at one point. the project was delayed because of the 101 express lane project, and by the time that project was concluded, we were left having to reline up the regional and state funding sources. so, just to be clear, this remains a top priority of san carlos. >> safety advocate mike swier says they're now back to square one. he and other advocates hope local officials at least find a short term solution. >> the really sad part of this is nobody listens to us unless somebody dies. it shouldn't be that way. when we say the streets aren't safe. unfortunately, we don't get a lot of positive feedback in san

when 20 san francisco families in need got to check off items on their wish lists. the saint anthony foundation paired children and their families up with police and firefighters to go shopping at target. it's all called heroes and helpers, where kids were given a $100 gift card to pick out their favorite gifts of the season in the north bay, one winter market brought a taste of france for the holidays. all of the vendors were small businesses of the bay area, and they served things like mulled wine, hot cocoa, and pastries. >> this is the first annual french winter market here in santa rosa. we are with vendors, local vendors. we have local artisans there selling their crafts, their products. we have french vendors. we just love featuring local community. >> i am the owner of go get bread. we usually come to the

plants. so those lows will be in the 30s for some of the interior locations. lakeport will be one of the coldest at 30. santa rosa 32 around the bay. we'll look for low to mid 40s. livermore 38 degrees and then temperatures will warm up into the 50s. so it's going to be a chilly day with some partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. this is a level one storm moving in. it's going to be a very messy commute on monday morning, but then it clears quickly by the afternoon. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. cold and dry tomorrow morning. rain for monday. but then we start to dry up through the week and possibly hit the mid 60s before more rain on saturday. >> it's so funny. a friend of mine said any time san francisco gets temperatures like under 50, we think it's so cold. it's very wimpy. >> i was like, i was telling my sisters, it's going to be in the 40s in san francisco. and she said it was 20 in new york. >> too cold. yeah, it's all in perspective. all right. chris has another preview of sports.

and that's what we're working for every day. >> one of the main reasons we're talking here. obviously you have had a great start, but the raising the bar tournament, you've spearheaded this effort for those that don't know and kind of take the viewers behind the scenes of how this got started, where we're at this year, and what's the new things that are coming this season as it's right around the corner? >> we've highlighted this tournament, which features four black female head coaches. the bar stands for basketball activism and representation because one of the issues in our sport is the lack of representation, with over 40% of the student athletes being women of color, yet only 17 to 18% of the head coaches being women of color. so it's just a way to continue the conversation and to highlight people of color in our sport that are doing an amazing job. and i think it it, you know, is a great example for young girls out there for them to see black women as head coaches. >> thanks to coach so much for her time. men's college hoops san jose state down in the final seconds to cal poly off the miss. ball gets
