businesses in santa cruz county. we'll take a look at the aftermath and there is more rain on the way. >> get ready for a storm level one. i'll let you know how much you can expect in your neighborhood and on the move. >> what we've learned about a wayward barge that ran aground near the emeryville berkeley marina. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> i heard someone scream. there's a tornado. so i ran out to the window to see. and there were things flying around. people screaming. >> witnesses say it was a scary scene. we're getting firsthand accounts of a rare tornado that tore through scotts valley. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. a big cleanup is happening in the santa cruz mountains. 24 hours after a confirmed tornado touched down in scotts valley, city officials say it's pretty amazing that no one was killed. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to witnesses who saw the funnel cloud on the move. oh my god.

>> okay. >> oh my god. it's a scene straight out of the movies. but this was real life for people in scotts valley saturday. a confirmed ef one tornado touching down on mount hermon road. ben hughes was there. >> everything was getting blown that way. cars were suddenly moving. you can see the traffic lights just leave the poles. >> the tornado touching down between two shopping centers, tearing through power lines and flipping cars over. some with people inside. >> i'm like, dad, we need to go help people. so me and my dad sprinted out of target, and then we helped this lady out of her car, and we made sure we put pressure on her head because she was bleeding. >> we started dragging branches off the street when the emergency vehicles were coming and to kind of create room, and everyone was kind of in a state of like, should i get in my car and drive away or should i help out? or what do i do? >> police say five people were injured. one remains in the hospital. >> it was a miracle that no one was killed in this event. >> scotts valley mayor derek timm says the city is cleaning

up and still assessing the damage. a classroom at scotts valley middle school was impacted by a fallen tree. >> really lucky that it didn't hit any of the infrastructure here or the buildings directly in this location. the fact that one person was critically injured is still tragic, but we're pulling for that person. >> the tornado cutting a clear path through the shopping center parking lot. tree limbs are everywhere. lots of smashed cars are here to check it out. this suv lost all of its windows. a sign at the local mcdonald's was trashed by strong winds. manager chris joaquin was working the lunch shift. >> i saw some people outside. they ran inside and started holding the door shut and i could see that they were they were really holding on hard and uh. luckily, everyone was safe. >> customers in the drive thru were not injured. >> i think only one person needed a refund and you know, because we couldn't complete the order. let's go home. >> let's go home. this community now, moving forward from a day they will never forget. >> we feel like we dodged a

bullet on this one in terms of the injuries and no fatalities in scotts valley. >> cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> unbelievable. pictures. well, p-g-and-e's crews are working to restore power outages to more than 7000 customers in the bay area. you can see the remaining outages on the utility's outage map here. more than 5500 are affected in the north bay, about 3000 on the peninsula and more than 2000 are without power in the south bay. officials say more than 350,000 customers in the region have already been restored, and 97% of those customers got their power back in less than 12 hours. >> we use our meteorology team's machine learning models to pre-stage crews, equipment and resources in those areas that are forecasted to be hardest hi, and the storm came in really as strong and in the locations where it was forecasted. so we were well positioned and prepared. >> p-g-and-e's expects to have the vast majority of remaining customers without electricity to be restored today. king tides

topped seven feet at high tide this morning. many low lying areas had flooding on the streets in mill valley. this section of shoreline highway was closed under highway 101 because of that flooding. we found at least one cyclist who didn't let it keep him from getting through the pedal deep water. tomorrow at 11 a.m, king tides are expected to peak at just under seven feet. all right. certainly lots going on with our weather. we have abc seven news meteorologist frances dinglasan standing by to help us prepare. and, frances, we have more rain on the way. >> yeah, definitely. so that's going to add to the water levels. so as diane mentioned, there is a coastal flood advisory and a flood advisory. so the first one tomorrow that goes on until 1:00. again due to the king tides we could see the minor flooding again on thosehe low lying roads, parks and lots once again. and then in addition to that, we have a flood advisory for the central part of sonoma county, especially near mark west spring. and this is also going to cause

additional flooding, possibly rivers, creeks, streams and roads. and we're going to continue getting excessive runoff. in addition to that, we have more rain on the way. it's a storm level one on our impact scale tomorrow morning. it's going to be a quick moving system. rainfall amounts anywhere from a 10th of an inch to half an inch, but we could get more than that in the north bay and the higher elevations. it's going to make for a very messy commute tomorrow morning with slippery roads once again. so it's still going to be dry by midnight. but five in the morning through eight in the morning is when the heart of the storm moves through the bay area. i'll let you know the totals coming up, diane. all right. >> we are tracking it closely, francis. thanks. now, tornadoes are rare, but not uncommon in california. the national weather service shared this graphic here, which says on average, the state sees 11 tornadoes a year. typically, they happen in the spring and fall. most of the time, the storms are weak in intensity. now, the last tornado in the bay area happened in march of 2011. thunderstorms moving across

california spawned a water spout off ocean beach, and a tornado that destroyed a building in santa rosa. an ef one tornado roared through south san francisco back in 2005, and it damaged 54 homes. an ef1 is considered a moderate tornado, with wind speeds between 86 and 110 miles an hour. the bay area is cleaning up and drying out after yesterday's fierce storm, which left behind quite a bit of damage in san francisco. the city's fire department responded to more than 100 calls about the storm, where multiple cars were crushed by toppled trees. the fierce winds left a trail of debris through many parts of the city, where large trees fell across fulton street as well, and several giant eucalyptus trees came down inside golden gate park. a quick reminder that you can track the rain any time with the abc seven bay area app. it gives you access to the very same live doppler seven our weather team uses. we'll also send alerts with important updates.

firefighters in san franciso are investigating the cause of a warehouse fire in the dogpatch neighborhood. it burned early this morning at minnesota and mariposa streets. this is near the children's hospital, but the fire department tells us the hospital was not under any threat. no injuries were reported. moving to developing news now in southern california, where the franklin fire burning in malibu is now 42% contained. cal fire says cool, moist weather has helped crews battle those flames. more than 4000 acres have burned when it sparked last monday. all mandatory evacuations have been lifted, and one of those thankful to be returning to their home is legendary actor dick van dike. quick thinking neighbors and good samaritans saved the 99 year old and his home. >> i couldn't get up and they had to pick me up and carry me to the car. they saved my house and my life. these guys. otherwise i wouldn't even be here.

health care ceo and now the ceo of a bay area company, says he's getting death threats in connection with the case. san francisco company peak design made the backpack that design investigators say luigi mangione wore during the shooting. peak design ceo peter dearing says he and his staff have since received threats due to misinformation on the internet. he says the company has not provided customer information to the police, and would only do so under a subpoena. mangione is accused of killing brian thompson on december 4th in new york city. the jewish contemporary museum in san francisco is now shut down for an extended closure. today was the final day of admission for at least a year. the museum has been gradually reducing staff and closing its galleries as it deals with financial issues. >> the work that we're doing no, by taking a temporary closure and putting together the team work to re-envision the

contemporary jewish museum will enable us to have a long term future. >> museum officials say the pandemic and the overall economic struggles in downtown san francisco are just some of the issues that contributed to the decision to close the museum temporarily. in the east bay, a barge that appeared to drift into the emeryville crescent is back out at sea. our emeryville camera captured this video just before 930 this morning. yesterday, you remember the barge showed up along thehe shoreline along i-80 between emeryville and berkeley. it was certainly an eye catching sight for drivers on the freeway. the coast guard says the 100 foot barge, identified as the mud scow, ran aground and was resting on sand. the barge has seattle, washington and seaport as identifiers. pollution teams assess the situation. then a tugboat had to wait until high tide to tow that vessel out. a road repair project along

highway one south of carmel is just about complete. the road was closed late last night for the work to be done. several girders are now installed on the rocky creek viaduct construction project. that viaduct upgrade was needed after rain and erosion caused part of the road to slide out back in march. highway one is scheduled to reopen tonight at 10:00 on the peninsula. toys are wrapped and ready for hundreds of kids in need across the bay area who otherwise wouldn't receive a gift this season. the nonprofit moms against poverty held its 14th annual holiday helping hand gift wrapping event in burlingame. volunteers wrapped new toys, which were donated during the organization's toy drive. there was music, treats and fun activity for the kiddos. the santa grinch even made a special appearance to drop off gifts. well, our stormy weather means good skiing conditions in tahoe, but it may be too much of a good thing for a music legend.

yes. let it snow in tahoe. caltrans cameras show snowy conditions on i-80 and highway 50. there is a chain advisory on 50 in the sacramento valley and the lake tahoe basin. caltrans is reporting spinouts along i-80 and applegate in placer county, and chains are also required on all vehicles along i-80 in placer county. even so, some drivers chose to brave the

conditions to go skiing. the uc berkeley central sierra snow lab in soda springs reports nearly 29in of snow fell there over the last 48 hours. another 2 to 4in is expected tomorrow. now, ski resorts are certainly relishing the snow. check this out. this video from palisades tahoe, which it says received 17in of snow over the past day, with a season total of 102in. today is day two of the outdoor music festival tahoe live, with diplo and lil wayne performing. snowy weather forced the festival to reschedule. lil wayne's performance from yesterday to today, i'm sure lots of things had to be reshuffled because of all of this snow. >> yes, and it's a good thing they had it today. it was a nice break to get things cleaned up from yesterday's wild weather, because tomorrow they're going to get more snow again in tahoe. up to 3 to 8in. wow. over 5000ft. so here's a look at live doppler seven. it has been quiet today, but we are

starting to see an increase in the cloud cover coming in from the north. and it's really pretty though from emeryville. as you see those clouds thickening up san francisco 50 degrees. oakland 53. hayward 52. san jose has been milder at 56. redwood city 54 and half moon bay 52. notice how the water looks so much calmer. winds have been light and calm and that allowed for a very chilly morning. santa rosa it's 49. we're seeing more 40s for some of the interior locations. petaluma 46. napa 47, fairfield 46. and concord at 47, with livermore at 48 degrees. as we show you live shot from santa cruz. here's what you can expect for the weather tomorrow. we're going to have another wet day, but mainly during the morning. it's going to be a rainy, messy commute during the morning, but then we get a break starting tomorrow afternoon. in fact, tuesday through friday will be dry and milder. then we have another storm on the way next weekend, so at least

we'll have about four and a half dry days. here's a futurecast showing you the clouds starting to increase, and you'll notice by 8:00 tomorrow morning we'll see this quick moving system running through the bay area. and so it could make for difficult driving, especially across the bridges, especially in the areas there with orange and yellow. that's the heavier rain. but notice by lunchtime and in the afternoon it is all gone. but that does also bring some snow to the sierra tomorrow morning and into the afternoon. rainfall estimates generally less than half an inch for most everybody, but it could be higher than that in some of the higher elevations in parts of the north bay, too, like ukiah and santa rosa. so some areas in the north bay could get up to an inch and notice areas like san jose, probably less than a quarter of an inch. so tomorrow we'll start to see the rain hit the north bay first and numbers will be chilly once again. morning lows will be in the 30s and cloverdale 36. santa rosa

right near freezing at 32 and then around the bay. look for low to mid 40s. san francisco and fremont at 43 san jose 42. also, we could still see a few sprinkles in the afternoon. temperatures will generally be in the 50s. napa one of the cooler spots at 50, but then it will get up to 60 in san jose and we'll see mid and upper 50s around the bay. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so morning rain and breezy conditions as the storm moves through quickly. then we dry out through the middle of the week until friday when the clouds increase. temperatures will be a bit milder before we have another system heading our way for the start of winter on saturday, and so it's going to be a wet weekend. >> hopefully everyone got their errands done, all of it today while they could. all right francis, thanks. all right. usually chris is over at levi's on sundays. but, chris, there is good reason you're at chase center today. hi.
