also made it out. bobo i believe his name was. so we're going to hear how he's thinking of first responders, because they obviously are putting their lives on the line out there battling these wildfires, devastating so many people, losing their homes and livelihoods. yeah, we will have more on that coming up a little bit later in the show. we begin this morning, though, with suspect. the suspect in the brazen murder of a health insurance ceo is expected to abandon his fight against extradition, as luigi mangione sits in a pennsylvania jail cell. >> he added a prominent attorney to his legal team. and we're getting new details about what his mother told authorities before he was taken into custody last week. prosecutors are preparing for luigi mangione to arrive back in new york as early as tomorrow, after charging him in the murder of unitedhealthcare chief brian thompson, sources tell abc news. mangione is almost certain to waive extradition from pennsylvania. a grand jury in new york could also hand down an indictment against mangione at any moment, speeding up the extradition process. mangione

was arrested in altoona last week, five days after thompson was gunned down. abc news has learned mangione's mother spoke with fbi agents and nypd detectives the day before his arrest, indicating surveillance photos could be her son. the task force was still working on the information she provided when mangione was spotted by a mcdonald's employee. sources also said writings police seized from mangione suggests he was fixated on united health care for months and gradually developed a plan to kill its chief executive. over the weekend, mangione added a high profile defense attorney to his legal team, karen friedman, agnifilo, spent seven years as second in command at the manhattan district attorney's office. earlier this week, before becoming mangione's attorney, she offered a preview of a potential defense strategy. >> he was brilliant his whole life. he comes from this great family. i mean, something changed, right? significantly. something changed. and they're going to, i think, potentially have a not guilty by reason of insanity potential defense.

>> his attorney tells abc news mangione intends to plead not guilty. police say they're investigating whether he allegedly targeted the health care giant because of its size. >> president biden is looking to his legacy as he prepares to leave office in just five weeks. he attended the democratic national committee's holiday reception with vice president kamala harris and encouraged the crowd to keep going after their defeat. >> the measure of a person or a party is how fast they get back up, and to know what we believe in is really worth fighting for. that's the road ahead. to never give up, to keep the faith, to know, to know that what we're doing matters. >> biden also declared that they are leaving the country in better shape than they found it, saying many of the laws they passed were consequential. the reported drone sightings along the east coast is prompting action in hopes of providing answers about what it is people are seeing up in the sky. that includes new specialized drone detection equipment being brought in by the feds to new

york state. abc's jay o'brien has more. >> federal authorities now deploying additional resources to solve a high flying mystery. after reported drone sightings across the northeast. the fbi saying they're processing roughly 5000 drone related tips, but less than 100 have generated credible leads. >> some of those drone sightings are, in fact, drones. some are manned aircraft that are commonly mistaken for drones. but there's no question that drones are being sighted inside of multiple drones all over this airport airport. >> tonight, new york governor kathy hochul saying in a statement, this has gone too far. she's joining lawmakers in calling for states to have additional authority to confront drones. and new york senator chuck schumer pushing federal authorities now to deploy special drone spotting technology. >> we certainly want to first get the answers to the questions and then we'll take further action. >> look at it. >> the recent reported drone sightings in at least seven

states, from new york to maryland, coming after dozens were reported in the skies above new jersey, including at a naval weapons station. but federal officials reiterating many of these sightings can be explained as civilian drones or planes, and there's no evidence of a foreign threat. >> this one's going to fly over us right now. >> new jersey senator andy kim, who posted these viral images on a drone patrol with local police, saying upon closer review, most of his possible drone sightings were almost certainly planes. and i'm told members of the house intelligence committee will receive a classified briefing in the coming days on these purported drone sightings. but federal officials, adamant that there is no evidence of any threat. in washington. jay o'brien, abc news. >> jay, thank you. former house speaker nancy pelosi is said to be on the mend at a u.s. military hospital in germany after undergoing hip replacement surgery. she tripped and fell on friday during a congressional delegation trip in luxembourg. pelosi is 84. it's not clear

when she'll be returning home to the united states. >> a live look right now at a soggy new york city where it is raining overnight. areas to the north are seeing some snow. the work week gets underway after some wild weather across the middle of the country, and also in california this morning. a slick commute is expected in parts of the northeast with light snow and freezing rain, but it won't be as severe as this weekend's deep freeze in the midwest. in iowa, wind chills getting down to negative six degrees, freezing rain leaving everything encased in a thick layer of ice, including roads. the slick conditions proving perilous. this was the scene on saturday in des moines, a car spiraling out of control on the ice, sliding sideways down the road before the driver can regain control. in california, more than a foot of snow burying i-80, leaving cars stranded outside of lake tahoe and closer to the coast. oh my god. >> oh my god, no! >> a chaotic scene caught on camera as a rare tornado touched

down near santa cruz over the weekend. >> you can see the traffic lights just leave the poles. >> an ef one twister bringing 90 mile per hour winds, flipping cars, snapping power lines and injuring several people. >> one was seriously injured, but nobody died. and that's that is the most important factor in this, in this event. >> the storm system triggering the first ever tornado warning in san francisco. it comes as southern california braces for yet another bout of warm, dry santa ana winds. wet weather over the weekend helped firefighters as they battled the nearly week old fire in malibu, which is nearly halfway contained. but when the winds pick up on tuesday, so will the threat of new fires. well, that progress against the wildfire malibu is really great news for the thousands of people who were forced to evacuate. >> they include actor dick van dike, who is speaking out about how he was helped to safety last week. so van dike is thanking his neighbors and good samaritans who took action as

flames were erupting last week. even a security camera captured van dike being led out of his home. >> he's a tough guy and what a gentleman. got him in the car and buckled him in. and just as he did, he grabbed my arm and he said, please don't let my house burn down. >> i couldn't get up and they had to pick me up and carry me to the car. they saved my house and my life. these guys, otherwise they wouldn't even be here. >> a thankful van dike turned 99 years old last friday. he says he hopes next year's birthday will arrive with a little less drama, at least from one mother nature. right now, that fire, known as the franklin fire, is 49% contained, according to cal fire. >> let's talk about how they saved his home. a lot of people wondering that they used a neighbor's fire suppression system. some of these homes have those types of systems, and then they use garden hoses to save the house. so using whatever they can while they're out there. >> yeah. >> good for dick van dike there.

fast for everyone's own good. eric schmidt calls artificial intelligence a remarkable human achievement, but he's also concerned we're getting to a point where computers will be able to run on their own. schmidt told abc's george stephanopoulos, we need to consider putting brakes on the technology. >> when the system can self-improve, we need to seriously think about unplugging it. >> but wouldn't that that kind of system have the ability to counter our efforts to unplug it? >> well, in theory, we better have somebody with a hand on the plug, metaphorically. but the important thing is that the power of this intelligence, the ability for this kind of new intelligence, means that each and every person is going to have the equivalent of a polymath in their pocket. in addition to your show and all your notes and writers, you're going to have an einstein and a leonardo da vinci to give you advice on your show. that will be true for everyone on the planet. we just don't know what it means to give that kind of power to every individual. >> schmidt says ai systems should be able to police themselves because humans won't be able to.
