6:02 am
in the afternoon. but this is a morning event from seven to about 11 will have the most activity as it progresses from north and slides to the east and the south, 40s and 50s with the cloud cover. so a milder start for you along the shoreline. but the winds pick up today, the south winds, we have fog a quarter of a mile visibility in livermore, half a mile in concord. and look how this moves. 8:00 it is raining in oakland, san francisco through the 9:00 hour in fremont. and then as we get towards 11:00, it sort of falls apart. it moves out by about noontime. good morning gloria. >> good morning to you, lisa. good morning to everybody. so we're getting a live look right now from our bay bridge toll plaza camera. the metering lights flipped on about 534 this morning. you can see it's really busy out there right now, especially those middle lanes there. so expect some delays throughout the morning. it is backed up to the end of the parking lot at this time. and let's take a look at your drive times for right now. so we are seeing some slowdowns. highway four to the maze 19 minutes.
6:03 am
emeryville to san francisco 16 minutes. san francisco to sfo nine minutes. and we have a live look at our golden gate bridge camera. and you can see, as usual, traffic. very light here this time of the morning. and today we have no issues with fog. it is very clear out there. so you will have no delays as you head from the north bay into san francisco. amanda. >> all right. gloria. thank you. a heads up for commuters in the north bay. if you use the smart train, you'll need to find a new way to get to work. this morning, the entire system is shut down. abc seven reporter lena howland is live in marin county. with the problem and your options today. lena. >> hey, amanda. we're at the larkspur smart train station now where they are experiencing a system wide closure. because of that, riders who depend on this train will need to find an alternate form of transportation all day long today. now, transit officials say downed trees blocked or damaged the tracks in multiple spots. they have to make repairs and complete
6:04 am
testing to prepare for the opening of the new smart petaluma north station later this year. the testing for that was supposed to happen this weekend with a planned closure, but the weather got in the way for riders who end up taking a taxi, uber or lyft because of this closure today. a reminder to save your receipts. smart says it will reimburse commuters. if you request it on the smart website, they will send money to your clipper card. riders can also take the golden gate transit bus. they are still offering their regularly scheduled rides connecting sonoma and marin counties to san francisco, but they will be bringing in extra busses on route 101 to make room for the anticipated increase in ridership. and once you get up here to larkspur, a reminder that the ferry service is still operating as normal. and if you need help planning an alternate trip today, a reminder that smart officials have opened up their customer service lines much earlier than normal to help people out. today, they open up at 4:00 this morning. for now,

live in larkspur. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you. lena. ski resorts are relishing even more fresh snow from the weekend storm. so you're looking at video from palisades tahoe, which says it got 17in of snow a season total of 102in so far. it wasn't just about hitting the slopes. yesterday was also day two of the outdoor music festival tahoe live, and they had some big names like diplo and lil wayne performing. actually, the snowy weather forced the festival to reschedule. lil wayne it was supposed to be saturday and ended up being yesterday. you can track the rain any time with the abc seven bay area app. it gives you access to the same live doppler seven that our weather team uses. will also send alerts with important updates. >> this morning, players and parents from an east bay youth football league are recovering after a really scary accident in florida. they were there for a football tournament friday. they went on the water for an airboat tour when two of the boats crashed into each other. kids and parents were sent flying
6:06 am
into the water. this was just northwest of miami. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone has details from team leaders. >> this helicopter video shows the scene after two airboats giving tours in the florida everglades on friday collided, injuring more than a dozen people. this is nearly 3000 miles away from california, but we've learned that the group on one of these boats was part of an eight and under youth football and cheer team based out of pittsburgh. they're called mega football and cheer, and they were competing in a national tournament in naples. team leaders tell us the group was on a swamp tour when one of the boats struck. the other parents and kids were thrown into the water. >> looks like there is someone underneath the boat trapped under the boat at this time. >> at least 16 people were hospitalized, according to emergency crews. those from the team tell us that some of the victims are now back in the bay area, but around 3 or 4 people are still in the hospital. in a statement posted to their facebook page, the group writes,
6:07 am
we're relieved to share that as of this morning, everyone is in stable condition. however, a couple of our cherished parents face a road to recovery. we're grateful for the strength and resilience of our mega community during this challenging time. family members of one of the victims tell us their loved one broke their tailbone. other injuries included broken arms and bad cuts, but everyone survived. we reached out to the airboat company to ask how something like this could happen, but as of this broadcast, they haven't gotten back to us. they did post a statement to their website on friday saying wooten's everglades airboat tours regrets that a collision involving two airboats occurred this afternoon. they went on to say, all of us at wooten's offer our sincere sympathies to everyone involved and wish them a speedy recovery. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> investigators say an overheated battery is to blame for a fire at an apartment building in san francisco. that fire started yesterday inside
6:08 am
the building on minna near sixth street. no one got hurt, but you'll see in a second that two dogs had to be rescued from the apartment. firefighters say the battery caught fire while charging back in september. san francisco fire officials told abc seven news the department has seen a significant increase in fires caused by lithium ion batteries. the board of supervisors is pushing to create safety standards for certain devices. >> good monday morning to you. we've got heavy rain in the north bay. you can see a line of showers. this is a level one system. it's progressive. it's going to sink to the south and east within the next hour to two hours in oakland and san francisco. but you're not going to see this kind of rain. you will see some good downpours. but look how it's coming down in penngrove, glen ellen, highway 12, santa rosa, highway one, back westward towards the coast, and you notice the rain gets a little bit lighter. lakeville highway moving to the south. but we will have those downpours throughout the morning. the morning commute will be a soggy one from marin through oakland
6:09 am
and san francisco at about 8:00, and you can see the line of light rain up towards fairfield, vacaville, where we have some fog. it's cloudy, it's milder from san jose to livermore this morning, and we've got fog at quarter mile visibility in livermore, half mile in concord. the breezy winds with the passage of the cold front as we go through the late morning hours. so it's not a big deal, but a big enough deal because you are on the roads this morning or hopefully try to stay off them after the commute. because look at 8:00, we've got these downpours from oakland to concord, back westward to san francisco, and then as it moves to the east and slips to the south, it does begin to fall apart. so by about 11 or 12:00, it's out of the north bay. it's pushing through the south bay and east bay, and then we will lift our storm impact scale for the afternoon because it's just cloudy skies. so a 10th of an inch, perhaps to 2/10 in the south bay. look at the east bay with maybe a third of an inch and upwards of an inch in the
6:10 am
north bay. there's a look at the wet snow temperatures in the 40s right now in truckee and tahoe. so the snow level is quite high. and we're looking at those 50s today with clouds in the afternoon. so this level one system for the morning. then we're dry all week until the weekend. >> thanks, lisa. tis the season for ugly christmas sweaters. and we have a lot to say about the in and out new sweater. it's really one sweater, but we'll talk about it. >> yes we will. >> and you may have seen this barge. it wasn't supposed to be here. we have an

of amazon workers could walk off the job during one of the busiest weeks for holiday shopping. gloria is at the live desk with the potential strike and how it could impact shoppers. gloria. >> well, friday, thousands of workers at the company's first ever unionized warehouses voted to authorize a strike, claiming that the tech giant has refused to negotiate a contract at the new york facilities. yesterday was the deadline that the teamsters union set for amazon to start negotiations. that never happened. the workers voted to unionize in 2022, but have been working without a contract. they're asking for a minimum pay of $30 per hour and also more safety protections. last month, workers in 20 countries, including the u.s, went on strike from black friday to cyber monday as part of the make amazon pay campaign. the annual effort, now in its fifth year, aims to convince the company to increase wages and
6:14 am
allow more workers to unionize. >> amazon squeezes everything that it can get, but it changes its behavior depending on jurisdiction. let's say in sweden, it engages much better in how it operates with trade unions than in the us, where it engages in in union busting. >> in response to the potential strike in new york, amazon says for more than a year now, the teamsters have continued to intentionally mislead the public, claiming that they represent thousands of amazon employees and drivers. they don't. and this is another attempt to push a false narrative. so could amazon customers be impacted by a strike? well, if your items are already on a truck, you should be okay. but they are. if they're standing at one of these two warehouses and they just haven't moved yet, that is more unclear. so hopefully you got that shopping done early. >> reggie aqui that would be a bummer. okay, gloria. thank you. the cash strapped san francisco contemporary jewish museum has closed its doors, at least for now. yesterday was the final day
6:15 am
for the museum in the city of soma neighborhood before a year long closure. the museum's executive director says a slow recovery from the pandemic and overall economic struggles downtown are key reasons they decided to pause operations. >> the work that we're doing now by taking a temporary closure and putting together the team work to re-envision the contemporary jewish museum will enable us to have a long term future. >> over the next couple of months, the museum will be cutting staff and closing exhibitions. the space will still be available to rent for events, which is a critical source of income. >> firefighters in san francisco are investigating the cause of a warehouse fire in the dogpatch neighborhood. it burned early yesterday morning at minnesota and mariposa. this is near the children's hospital, but the fire department tells us the hospital was not under any threat. no injuries were reported. >> in the east bay, a barge that appeared to drift into the emeryville crescent is now back
6:16 am
out to sea. our emeryville camera captured this video just before 930 yesterday morning. now, on saturday, the barge showed up along the shoreline right next to interstate 80 between emeryville and berkeley. pretty eye catching sight for drivers on the freeway. the coast guard says that 100 foot barge, identified as the mud scow, ran aground and was resting on sand. pollution teams assessed the situation. then a tugboat had to wait until high tide to tow the vessel out. >> san francisco skyline will be a little less colorful tonight. last night was the final night of let's glow s.f. the holiday projection arts festival had been on display downtown since december 6th. the large scale animated light installations created by artists from all over the world have lit up eight locations across downtown. the downtown s.f. partnership has hosted let's glow s.f. since 2020. >> okay, so if you are in this venn diagram of people who aren't sick of holiday parties yet and for whatever reason still haven't ordered their christmas sweater, then this is
6:17 am
for you. in-n-out just released its ugly christmas sweater. it features a 3d cheeseburger hanging off its front and falling apart. am i to believe? oh, so that is a thing. it's hanging. it's attached to your sweater. >> it's the 3d part of it. yep. >> okay, so the sweater says, just trying to keep it together. this christmas has a green and white pattern that is a lot like the in-n-out drink cup. it's $70, y'all, and christmas is next week. yeah. so order it and get it in time for valentine's day. like, what's going on here? why was the marketing team not on this earlier? i have so many questions. >> well, i feel like so many people also had their holiday parties over this last weekend. >> yeah, it's over baby. >> and so for this, you know, was it just hard to manufacture these. >> and they just got them in or i'm not sure what it looks like they're trying to play off of like oh we're so disorganized trying to keep it together this christmas, you know.
6:18 am
>> but still it is really just too late. >> too late. >> maybe that's the irony. >> okay. >> just trying to keep it together. >> wow. >> that's why we're hearing about it on december 16th. >> yes, exactly. >> and boy, are we talking about it. >> that's true. that is a good depiction of me this weekend, though. just barely hanging on. >> what about me? what about you? myself? what happened yesterday? >> oh, you were here when that alarm went out? >> yeah. >> oh my gosh. yeah, that was that was something else. >> it was. i knew when i walked in the door i was like, this is not good. it really wasn't. yeah. anyway, we got through it and boy, still cleaning up from the damage. even though san francisco had the straight line winds, you had that 83 mile an hour wind gusts at the airport and all of the trees down, all the damage. golden gate park this morning. it's a level one system, and we are looking at that pretty heavy rain in the north bay. but this is progressive. it's going to move to the south, oakland and san francisco. you're going to get in on this but points east and south of that not so much. so as we're seeing the rain rates
6:19 am
really increase here from glen ellen to yountville, we will be looking at this to sink and to lighten up, but still downpours in the forecast for the morning commute in the city and in oakland. bodega bay, heavy rain, lighter rain in marin county here san rafael 580, the richmond san rafael bridge, some mist, some drizzle and some very light rain. but for those of you in fremont and san jose and palo alto, nothing going on. you will get some rain and look at the totals anywhere from a 10th of an inch or less in the south bay to over an inch in the north bay. we've got breezy winds, lingering chances in the afternoon, but overall this is just a morning event, enough to mess up that morning commute. 46 in sonoma. so you should give yourself some extra time because between about eight and 9:00 it's going to be pretty wet from oakland to concord and san francisco, quarter mile visibility in livermore. and this is the timing of it. so 7:00 it's slipping to the south.
6:20 am
and look what happens by the time we get to 8:00. it's taking its time. but we do have the pretty good downpours from about 830 to 930. so maybe the commutes over here, but still the downpours throughout the morning hours. it's slipping south into san mateo by about 10:00 and then by 11:00 look what happens. it falls apart and you will see some lingering showers here throughout the afternoon. it looks like here in livermore and half moon bay, but rainfall amounts focusing in the north bay. look at this. over an inch of rain here and pretty easy to believe as we've got the heavy downpours up here. but the rest of us a quarter to a third of an inch. and we're looking at warm weather. unfortunately, in the mountains. a winter weather advisory with temperatures in the 40s, so only that wet snow with 2 to 4in of precip there, 57 in san francisco, 50 in napa. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. this level one system today we're looking dry tuesday through friday. winter arrives
6:21 am
on saturday with a level one system for the weekend. we'll be right back. i'm not waiting. if it's covid, paxlovid. paxlovid is an oral treatment for adults with mild-to-moderate covid-19 and a high-risk factor for it becoming severe. it does not prevent covid-19. my symptoms are mild now, but i'm not risking it. if it's covid, paxlovid. paxlovid must be taken within the first five days of symptoms, and helps stop the virus from multiplying in your body. taking paxlovid with certain medicines can lead to serious or life-threatening side effects or affect how it or other medicines work, including hormonal birth control. it's critical to tell your doctor about all the medicines you take because certain tests or changes in their dosage may be needed. tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, hiv-1, are or plan to become pregnant, or breastfeed. don't take paxlovid if you're allergic to nirmatrelvir, ritonavir, or any of its ingredients. serious side effects can include allergic reactions, some severe like anaphylaxis, and liver problems. these are not all the possible side effects so talk to your doctor.

6:25 am
necessarily unfriendly. it just appears as if he's unfriendly. and so i just always imagined he would be horrible to talk to. and he's not. but just on campus, it was it was a little intimidating to me. >> this is your don't judge a book by its cover lesson with reggie. >> thank you, billy eichner. you taught me so many lessons that i now still haven't learned from. >> and now he's going to be on mufasa, teaching us a lesson of what came first. >> oh, yeah. >> i'm sure you've had people. yeah, everyone's had someone in their life where you found out later, like, oh, they're actually really cool. yeah. >> but yeah, billy is one. >> but billy. yeah. billy's mine. so we look forward to seeing billy eichner and his nice personality when he's on gma this morning. rebecca, always great to see you. >> it is lovely. it is lovely and very funny. bye, guys. >> bye. millions of people getting ready to travel this last few weeks of december and into the new year with expected record high numbers. officials are warning you to get a plan

6:31 am
>> yes, i've updated this. it is going to linger into the afternoon and we are getting heavy rain in the north bay. you can see that bright banding of red and orange. this has been going on for the past hour. still a level one because this will be moving out. so even though you're getting very high rainfall rates per hour, it is going to be sinking to the south and east. you don't need any more rain up here, but bodega bay, heavy rain as well as dylan beach, sebastopol more batches of heavy rain from big bend here up in sonoma, up towards yountville. highway 29. it gets lighter as you move down through marin, through mill valley and over into vallejo. some light showers, el sobrante and up towards fairfield where we've got fog. also in san francisco. nothing happening yet that's going to change. it's a level one system, looking at a 10th of an inch to over an inch in the north bay. breezy winds, slippery roads, and we're looking at the second half of the system to push into the peninsula and south bay this afternoon. so anywhere from about 9 to 11, we're looking at
6:32 am
the heaviest rain and temperatures this morning with fog in the 40s in the east bay. gloria good morning. >> we're going to take a live look right now at richmond bridge camera. and you can see the traffic is pretty much stop and go here at this time. it is still flowing, but it's just moving a little bit slower at this time of the morning. looking live here at our map of the roads in the bay area, you'll see a little bit of red. we do want to point your attention over to san mateo, because we do have an incident there that we're tracking on northbound 101 at third avenue in san mateo. and right now we do have delays. it's going about 13mph, so you can take 280 to avoid this because of a two car crash. guys. all right, gloria. >> thank you. happening now. p-g-and-e's crews are still working to get the lights back on for more than 3500 customers. this is across the bay area. they have made progress. and there are fewer dots on the outage map. as you can see, the north bay saw the worst of the outages over the weekend. p-g-and-e's tells us they restored most people's power
6:33 am
within 12 hours. this is all thanks to crews pre-positioned in hard hit spots. >> we use our meteorology team's machine learning models to pre-stage crews, equipment and resources in those areas that are forecasted to be hardest hit. and the storm came in really as strong and in the locations where it was forecasted. so we were well positioned and prepared. >> p-g-and-e's map shows most of the larger outages won't be fixed until this afternoon. there is still quite a bit of damage in san francisco after saturday's fierce storm. several large trees are still on the side of the road in golden gate park, waiting for crews to clear them out. the fire department responded to more than 100 calls about damage from the strong winds, toppled trees, crushed multiple cars, a rare sight that still causing a mess in scotts valley. >> a tornado that tore through town on saturday. santa cruz county officials say it's amazing no one was killed. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to witnesses who saw the funnel cloud on the

mall or at redwood and grant. smart transit officials say today's closure is happening because downed trees blocked or damaged their tracks in multiple spots. they have to make repairs and complete testing to prepare for the opening of the new smart petaluma north station later this year. the testing was supposed to happen this weekend with a planned closure, but the weather got in the way. if you do need help planning an alternate trip today, smart has expanded their customer service hours, opening up this morning at four. and for riders who do end up taking a taxi, an uber or lyft, a reminder to save your receipt. save your receipts. smart says they are reimbursing customers through their website, and they will reload that money right back to your clipper card. live in larkspur. lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. and as the bay area gets ready for another round of rain in southern california, they're preparing for more dangerous winds and wildfire conditions.
