following up on a story we first brought you last night here on abc seven news. at 11. players and parents from an east bay youth football league were injured in an airboat crash in the florida everglades. now, tonight, new tonight. an interview you'll see only on seven. abc seven news reporter jr stone spoke with a pregnant mother who was on board that boat. >> the boat was wrecked. water was coming in. kids were screaming. blood everywhere, mud everywhere. >> althea wyndham is describing the tense moments after the airboat she was on with her seven year old son and his travel football team out of pittsburgh, crashed last friday in the florida everglades. >> this particular spot, it's very it's a curve. and so there was two boats coming like this. so we the moment we saw it, it was too late to even react. respond. and it was just the last thing i remember seeing was the boat. and i'm like, oh, we're going to crash. >> althea, who was airlifted to the hospital with a three year old, was one of at least 16
11:02 pm
people hospitalized. everyone survived. >> when i woke up, children were in the water. i believe we were knocked out a few seconds. the other boat was on top of our boat. and it just took a while to kind of realize what was going on. another mother mother on our team floating in the water. and so we pulled her out. i started cpr on her. i then felt started to feel pain. and so i moved away and the captain of the boat took over and started performing cpr on her. >> althea, who is seven months pregnant, now has a broken tailbone and is out of work as a flight attendant for the foreseeable future. physically, her son aj is okay, but he's still a bit shaken up over what happened. >> he was screaming on the way back home thinking the plane was going to crash, and so he will need some therapy. >> it was scary at the same time of the other one, i would go on the boat, but not the airboat.
11:03 pm
>> wyndham is concerned though, saying there were no safety warnings after getting on the boat and no seatbelts. >> i remember the other captain of the other boat distinctively saying i never took this route before. i never he just kept saying it repeatedly, just kind of made me upset that they don't have, like, safety protocols in place to make sure something like this doesn't happen. everyone should have routes. >> we did reach out to the airboat company with questions, but have not yet heard back. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> a lot of questions obviously still to be answered there. all right. here's a live look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza. the rain has moved out for now, but there is some murky fog out there. weather anchor spencer christian is here with the forecast. spencer. >> dan, we've got patches of fog out there and still some damp pavement. you probably saw it glistening there in that camera shot because of the rain that we have had. but as you can see on live doppler seven, it is not raining at the moment, but it's foggy enough out there, misty enough in some spots that it feels kind of damp if you're out
11:04 pm
walking around. here's the satellite radar composite image showing that all that rain from earlier today has moved well to our east. so here's our forecast animation. going into the overnight hours, we'll see patches of clearing even with the development of patchy fog during the overnight hours. and by 9:00 tomorrow morning there will be some bright sunny spots. as well as that, whatever fog is left over starts to burn off. right now we're looking at temperature readings in the upper 40s to low 50s, so it's relatively mild. we don't expect it to get very chilly overnight. and these are our forecast headlines overnight. once again patchy fog mist and drizzle. tomorrow through friday we'll see bright skies a mix of a few clouds and lots of sunshine dry and milder. and the weekend will bring more rain. i'll have the complete accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes. dan. >> all right. spencer. thanks. we'll check back in shortly. tonight we're learning about a cal fire battalion chief who was hurt in the rare tornado that struck scotts valley over the weekend. manny garcia was inside his battalion truck when it was thrown into the air and flipped, as you can see. bystanders helped break the front windshield so he could get out.
11:05 pm
>> at that time, i looked around and noticed there was a more than five cars flipped over debris all over the roadway, power poles just leaning. and i'm thinking to myself, like, what just happened? like, we don't get tornadoes here, but this looks like a tornado. >> oh my god, we just don't see these kind of scenes in the bay area. his fire gear was thrown into the trees by the wind. luckily, he walked away with only some scrapes and bruises. the fire chief has given garcia some time off to rest up from this. obviously very strange and scary incident. well, the weekend storm also brought a lot of rain, which has wreaked havoc on some roads in the south bay particularly. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows you the impact on drivers and on folks living there. >> a mixture of mud and debris from an unstable hillside in saratoga is once again closing a stretch of highway nine. on monday, caltrans decided to
11:06 pm
close both directions from redwood gulch road to sanborn following the wet weekend weather. >> right now, what we're seeing is we're calling it soupy mud. it's very soupy. it's really hard for us to go out there and just get a bulldozer and scrape it up. we need to go in there, bring our crews in there to make sure we're able to clear out all that mud. >> caltrans will determine if it's safe to reopen the highway on wednesday. >> right now, we're just waiting to see. hopefully, everything can dry up. >> the same closure happened here last winter due to a mudslide. this hillside is an active project. caltrans crews have been working on since september to put in a new drainage system. >> also put in some new regrade the slope as well. just make sure that doesn't happen again. >> mountain charley road in the santa cruz mountains was closed for seven months this year following a massive landslide. it took out two roads, including a driveway that leads up to five homes. amanda watson lives in one of those homes. >> we just kind of in limbo waiting. just waiting and
11:07 pm
hoping. >> nothing worse happens at the end of september. the county installed a temporary dirt road to connect mountain charley road, but said the private driveway is not their responsibility to fix. watson said they can't rebuild the driveway until the temporary road is completed. a timeline for that is vague. >> how long is it going to take for them to really support that road? because we were at their mercy, like, you know, they they hold all the cards as far as what we can do. >> county officials said the likelihood of losing this temporary road this winter is low, unless there's a repeat of the 2023 storm systems in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> in just the past hour, we've learned the smart train system will be back up and running tomorrow morning for the commute. storm damage in the north bay. shut down service yesterday. transit officials say downed trees blocked or damaged the train tracks in a number of spots. remember, you can track the rain any time you wish with the abc seven bay area app. it

11:09 pm
the opposite, saying momeni targeted lee. they say momeni believed his sister had been drugged and sexually assaulted by a man lee had introduced to her. randall knox, an attorney who briefly represented balwani's mother, says the jury had a lot to consider. >> you start with, do people agree that it was premeditated and deliberate with malice aforethought? if 12 people don't agree to that, then they consider whether it's second degree murder, if they don't agree that he intended to kill him with that mental state, it could conceivably be reduced to voluntary manslaughter. >> abc seven news has been in court since the start of the trial. our reporters saying the testimony is given throughout the case were conflicting. legal analyst steven clark believes it could be his own testimony that could have ultimately swayed jurors. >> i think the big question for this jury is what did they think of mr. balwani's testimony? did they give him the benefit of the doubt? and how did that play into their verdict? >> while tuesday's verdict will end the trial, clark says there
11:10 pm
will likely be more court appearances for momeni if he is convicted of any charge. >> what will happen next is about six weeks from now, there will be a sentencing hearing where both sides will present information to the court as to what is the appropriate sentence based on a number of factors. >> the trial initially began back in october, and the jury started their deliberations on december 4th in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. >> now, of course, tomorrow we will bring you the news of that verdict just as soon as it breaks. tune in here on abc seven or wherever you stream. all right. time now for the abc seven news advancer at 11. we'll give you a look ahead at some of the stories. you'll be hearing more about this week. first, luigi mangione may be extradited back to new york as early as tomorrow. that's the man accused, of course, of killing unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. sources tell abc news that mangione is almost certain to waive extradition from pennsylvania. over the weekend,

now requesting the supreme court temporarily block a federal ban on that popular social media app. the appeals appeal rather calls on the high court to intervene in this battle between congress and the platform. the china based company is facing a january 19th deadline to sell or face a ban in the united states. the company and tiktok users say this ban violates the first amendment. if the court takes up this emergency appeal, the ban will be on hold until at least the court decides whether it will formally hear the case. the state superintendent is backing a bill to essentially keep immigration officials out of schools. it comes amid promises from president elect donald trump to rescind long term protections against deportation. the proposed bill is intended to safeguard student attendance and state funding in schools by protecting against immigration enforcement. >> the bill has been introduced today. the bill says that schools can't work with ice, and
11:18 pm
ice can't be on campus, and the bill calls for a one mile radius around schools, recognizing that sometimes ice officials might be sort of lying in wait near campus. again, we don't want students to stay home. we don't want attendance to be suppressed. >> this bill has an urgency clause in it, meaning it could move quickly through the legislature, and if passed, it could take effect very rapidly, which is the point. all right. as part of our mission to build a better bay area, we are always happy to highlight our neighbors making a real difference. tonight we start in the east bay, where a group of community members, fed up with piles of trash thrown onto the side of the road, are banding together to do something about it. they've been working on grizzly peak road in the hills above berkeley. a group of more than 70 volunteers say they've been hard at work for more than a year now, working to clear more than 20 tons of trash. they call themselves the east bay trash pandas. >> this is 100% a team effort.

11:20 pm
and, you know, they're very present with us today in this moment. all those that are not here and those that are here to remember and celebrate their life. >> each farm worker got a gift bag of essentials as well as toys for their kids. there was a menorah lighting ceremony in san francisco's castro district tonight. they had some speakers to mark the occasion, and people were able to light their own candles. people hung out to socialize and enjoy some musical performances as well. hanukkah does not begin until december 25th, but locals came to get a head start on their celebrations anyway. and why not make it a long festive holiday season? all right, we're going to get a break from the weather, which is nice. spencer christian is back with a forecast after a really intense weekend and heavy rain today. spencer. oh yeah. >> dan. we had some active weather, as we the weather business, but right now things are calm. as you can see on live doppler seven, the storm has ended, has moved well to our east. you can see the movement here on the satellite radar composite. so some of that
