rain, a mudslide forcing caltrans to close a mountain highway used by commuters. and it's not the first time the growing frustration for local residents. >> and we do want to take a live look at highway 101 in san jose. as you get ready to head out the door, you may need a little extra time today. fog is blanketing much of the bay area. we know gloria is tracking the impact on the morning drive, and drew's got the timeline for when the sun will make an appearance. >> where is rudolph when we need him? i don't know, but we know that drew is back. >> welcome back.k. >> yeah, that fog this morning, it is widespread out there. so it's not just one location. it's everywhere. we'll take a live look outside. this is san jose this morning. you can clearly see that fog out there 51 degrees. but the big thing. we'll track all morning long is that visibility. you can see down to half a mile. that's going to be an issue in the south bay this morning. what you're looking at from this view is sfo ths morning. you can't even see the airport out there. visibility here is down to zero miles. so

that's what we're dealing with right now. visibility that is so down that it's hard to see. so outside this morning anywhere from zero miles visibility a mile in san carlos, half a mile in san jose, less than a mile in concord this morning. so we do have a dense fog advisory. for a lot of us, this will last until 9 a.m. this morning. a really good idea. use those low beams this morning. don't use the high beams that reflects off the fog. makes it hard to see out there. add some extra distance between the cars in front of you this morning because. 715 here's the fog forecast. we're still dealing with low cloud cover out there this morning, even though the fog advisory technically ends at 9 a.m, we'll likely still see some patchy fog out there. it's not until the middle part of the day. the fog is out, the sun is back in the afternoon is looking lovely. we're done with the rain sunshine today and temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. let's check in with gloria. see how that commute is going. >> good morning drew. good morning to everybody. so as drew mentioned, we are dealg with a lot of fog this morning. i know when i drove in to work

today, there was definitely a lot of fog out there. and you can see our map here showing you the fog throughout the bay area. good thing is you're seeing mostly green, so traffic is moving, but you just have to be very careful when you're driving in this dense fog. it could be really hard to see out there. you can see from our san jose 101 8-80 camera. definitely foggy here in this area, and it's startino get a little busy north of 101. but just, you know, again, traffic is flowing nicely this morning. so looking at our oakland 880 camera it is also foggy here south of 880 heading towards la and san leandro, though moving pretty nicely. but i mean guys look at that. hard to even see the headlights there because of that dense fog this morning. >> reggie okay, hopefully folks will be careful. thank you. we're following up on a story we told you about yesterday on abc seven mornings, a nasty air boat crash in the florida everglades and on board a bay area youth football team and a pregnant mother. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is hearing from that woman in a story you'll see only

on abc seven news. >> the boat was wrecked, water was coming in. kids were screaming. blood everywhere, mud everywhere.blood everywhere, mud >> althea wyndham is describing the tense moments after the airboat she was on with her seven year old son and his travel football team out of pittsburgh, crashed last friday in the florida everglades. >> this particular spot, it's very it's a curve. and so there was two boats coming like this. so we the moment we saw it, it was too late to even react respond. and it was just the last thing i remember seeing was the boat. and i'm like, oh, we're going to crash. >> althea, who was airlifted to the hospital with a three year old, was one of at least 16 people hospitalized. everyone survived. >> when i woke up, children were in the water. i believe we were knocked out a few seconds. the other boat was on top of our boat. and it just took a while to kind of realize what was going on. another mother mother

on our team floating in the water. and so we pulled her out. i started cpr on her. i then felt started to feel pain. and so i moved away and the captain of the boat took over and started performing cpr on her. >> althea, who is seven months pregnant, now has a broken tailbone and is out of work as a flight attendant for the foreseeable future. physically, her son aj is okay, but he's still a bit shaken up over what happened. >> he was screaming on the way back home thinking the plane was going to crash, and so he will need some therapy. >> he was scared at the same f t other one. i would go on the boat, but not the airboat. >> wyndham is concerned though, saying there were no safety warnings after getting on the boat and no seat belts. >> i remember the other captain of the other boat distinctively saying, i never took this route before. i never he just kept saying it repeatedly. just kind of made me upset that they don't have, like, safety protocols in

place to make sure something like this doesn't happen. everyone should have routes. >> we did reach out to the airboat company with questions, but have not yet heard back. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> new details this morning about the tornado that left damage in scotts valley over the weekend. yikes. we're now hearing from a cal fire battalion chief who was injured. manny garcia says the tornado sent his work truck, which you're looking at, flying into the air before it landed on its side. people who were close by had to break the windshield so he could get out. >> at that time, i looked around and noticed there was a more than five cars flipped over. debris all over the roadway. power poles just leaning. and i'm thinking to myself, like, what just happened? like, we don't get tornadoes here, but this looks like a tornado. >> oh my god. garcia's fire gear was thrown into the trees by the wind. luckily, he walked away with only some minor scrapes and bruises. and this morning, we're

going to find out the verdict. in a murder case that has made national headlines for over a year now. a jury in san francisco is set to announce their decision in the trial over the killing of tech executive and cash app founder bob lee. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here in studio with a look at some of the potential outcomes. lena. >> amanda. after nine long days of deliberations, jurors have finally reached a verdict in this high profile trial, which first started back in october during. attorneys argued he stabbed cash app founder bob lee in self-defense. they claimed it was actually lee who first pulled a knife on mckinney in a drug fueled rage. the prosecution arguing the opposite, saying mo many targeted lee. they say mo many believed his sister had been drugged and sexually assaulted by a man lee had introduced to her. legal expert randall knox says the jury had a lot to consider. >> to start with. do people agree that it was premeditated and deliberate with malice

aforethought? if 12 people don't agree to that, then they consider whether it's second degree murder, if they don't agree that he intended to kill him with that mental state. it could conceivably be reduced to voluntary manslaughter. >> i think the big question for this jury is what did they think of mr. lee's testimony? did they give him the benefit of the doubt? and how did that play into their verdict? >> legal analyst stephen clark, who you just heard from, believes it could be mo many's own testimony that could have ultimately swayed jurors. the verdict will be read in court this morning at 930. if he is convicted of any charges, clark says he will come back for a sentencing hearing in about six weeks. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. and we will have live coverage today of the verdict as soon as it happens. if you have the abc seven bay area app on your phone, we'll send an alert once the verdict is read. and you can see live reports from the

courthouse wherever you watch abc seven news this morning. >> a big headache. if you drive in the santa cruz mountains, a portion of highway nine is closed after recent storms caused a mudslide. and, gloria, this isn't the first time. >> it isn't the first time. you're right about that. this is the second year in a row that there's been a big mudslide on this portion of highway nine. it's between redwood gulch road and sanborn in the saratoga area, and you can see video of it right here. caltrans decided to close the highway yesterday. officials say the mud is just too wet and soupy for crews to clean it up. crews have been actively working to improve this stretch since september to install new drainage and improve the hillside. last year, a similar slide took out two roads, including a driveway that leads to five homes. a temporary road was installed, but the county says the private driveway is not their responsibility, and that's left many residents frustrated because they can't fix their driveway until a permanent road is finished. >> how long is it going to take

for them to really support that road? because we were at their mercy, like, you know, they they hold all the cards as far as what we can do, a timeline for a permanent road has been vague, but the county says a temporary road should be safe this winter. >> now, as for highway nine, caltrans is hoping to clear the road and reopen it tomorrow. and of course, we know people want a relief from that rain. drew, are we going to get it? >> yeah, we've got a couple of dry days for you. the issue we have this morning, and you can see it on our sn rafael camera right now. live. look, we have a lot of fog out there. the moisture we got yesterday, the skies cleared, and all that moisture is now condensing into fog this morning. so this is a widespread problem. dense fog advisory is in effect through 9 a.m. for reduced visibility. best practices. never a bad idea to have that reminder. keep it on low beams. don't put your high beams on because that just reflects the fog even more. makes it harder to see. drive slower with caution and add extra distance between the cars

around you, because this morning you could see most areas dealing with low visibility. concord less than a mile at zero miles at sfo. so certainly 101 in this region. as you head north from the peninsula into the city, is certainly going to be a slow go out there, half a mile visibility right now in san jose. temperatures right now in the north bay, some of the coldest areas, mid 40s, low 50s right now for oakland, san mateo as we battle that fog. so the morning forecast shows you that dense fog clearly through 9 a.m. that's how long the advisory will last. and then we'll start to see increasing sunshine later on this morning. i think we're totally fog free by about 11 a.m. the afternoon will feature a lot of sunshine today, so drive slow out there this morning. that dense fog. the afternoon we get that sunshine back, it is dry. later today we'll have daytime highs mainly in the low 60s. we do have some rain in the forecast on the seven day guys. we'll show you that coming up in just a few minutes. >> drew thank you. still

it is 513. investigators in madison, wisconsin are trying to figure out how a 15 year old girl got the gun. they say killed at least two people at her own school. a student and teacher were killed and six others were injured. two are in critical condition. a second grader is the one who first alerted police to what was happening on campus. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero with what we know about the investigation. >> this morning, madison, wisconsin's abundant life christian school's doors are closed to all but investigators after a teenage student brought a handgun and opened fire in a

study hall monday. according to officials, the 911 call came in just before 11 a.m, they add from a second grade student at the school. >> don't let that soak in for a minute. a second grade student called 911 at 10:57 a.m. report a shooting at school. >> officers entered the school within four minutes. finding the shooter killed two people. six more were taken to the hospital with injuries. >> i heard gunshots and screaming and it was all really scary. and i was, like, terrified. so were my friends. >> investigators say the suspect, 15 year old natalie renaud, who went by samantha, took her own life. police cleared the rest of the school room by room as parents arrived to pick up their children, britt and kyle. grange, speaking with abc's alex perez, are grateful their kids are okay. >> i'm very, very, very thankful. i mean, the gut

the alphabet owned autonomous driving company says the project will help their vehicles maneuver on left handed roads. they say it will arrive in early next year with a fleet of their all electric jaguars. at first, the cars will be operated manually before they're ready to take the road on their own. the namesake of a popular sushi restaurant on the peninsula will serve his final rolls this month. sam, the heart and soul behind sushi sam's admati in san mateo, is retiring after 36 years, but his legacy will continue. the restaurant says on facebook that it is moving and will reopen under the name sushi armada. the last day of sushi sam's will be saturday, december 28th. during the pandemic, mark zuckerberg and priscilla chan gave eight of their favorite restaurants $100,000. sushi sam's was among them. >> the simpsons is marking a milestone this year with its holiday special premiering today. it's been almost 35 years

the cars around you. so here's the fog forecast 7 a.m. we're still fighting the fog. technically, the advisory is going to expire at 9 a.m, but i still think even then we're trying to break through some of this fog. it's closer to 11 a.m. we're getting out of that fog. the sun is back and this afternoon is totally dry. it's sunny and temperatures right around 60 degrees for most of us, so we'll fight that fog this morning. the dense fog advisory until 9 a.m. we'll see sunshine this afternoon, about 61 in the city and oakland, 64, in san jose, hitting about 60 in napa overnight tonight. we're not expecting widespread fog. we may see some patchy fog in some of our sheltered valleys, but for the most part, we're not going to see what we're seeing out there right now. overnight lows in the 30s and in the 40s. so here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we actually have a red flag warning in southern california that kicks in at 3 p.m. today for another round of some strong santa ana winds. for us, it's the storm. track is so far to our north the next couple of days. clearly you can see all that rain kind of aimed

based meta is rolling out a new ai model called meta motivo. it focuses on behavior and is able to control robots to perform complex tasks. in today's gma first look, those drone sightings in the northeast. the fbi acknowledges most tips from the public are actually planes or illegally flown drones, but they still have issued a new warning. here's abc news reporter andrew dymburt. >> in this morning's gma first look, the drone mystery deepens. >> we don't know what they're doing and who's operating them. that's the unsettling part. >> the fbi and department of homeland security ramping up efforts to investigate reports of mysterious drone sightings in the northeast. law enforcement officials now warning there's a new danger for air travel. the fbi receiving nearly 5000 tips so far. amid growing fear and uncertainty, federal sources tell abc news they're deploying infrared cameras and drone detection technology to ensure drones flying over new jersey and new york aren't a threat. >> we are seeing an increase in pilots of manned aircraft being hit in the eyes with lasers

because people on the ground think they see a drone. we are also concerned people will take matters into their own hands and fire a weapon at an aircraft. >> and coming up on gma, a morning interview with white house national security communications adviser john kirby with your gma first look, i'm andrew dymburt, abc news, new york. >> if you're a fan of cryptocurrency, this past year has really been interesting. bitcoin is up 150% in 2024. it's really been surging in the past month since donald trump won the presidential election. yesterday, it reached a new record high, surging past $107,000 after trump reiterated plans to create a national stockpile of bitcoin. imagine it being similar to the country's strategic oil reserve. experts say trump's support of cryptocurrency is positive for people who have been investing in it. >> well, yeah, there's a lot of risks around bitcoin. regulatory environment continues to still be choppy. but the path for bitcoin is much more positive.

by the district attorney clearing a union leader accused of wrongdoing. the reaction from the embattled sheriff. >> a last ditch effort to save tiktok, the social media site just weeks away from being banned in the u.s. so they are appealing to the supreme court. the new support from president elect donald trump. >> plus, we are taking a lie look from our san jose 8-80 camera. you can see the commute is likely going to be a foggy one. we're seeing low visibility across the bay area. drew is tracking how long it will last, and gloria is tracking your commute. good morning everyone. it's tuesday, december 17th. >> yes. and drew, i just realized that we are very much at the end of fall. >> yeah, we are only a few days left. winter officially begins here on saturday, and that will find a return of some rain this weekend. dry conditions expected this afternoon. but this morning. this is our problem. a live look at our san rafael camera. clearly, you could see that fog out there 57 degrees right now. visibility down to about a third of a mile here. other areas seeing

visibility down to zero miles. so be aware of that. a live look at our san jose camera as well. this is another area that has low visibility about a half a mile here. so we do have this widespread fog that is creating issues. we have a dense fog advisory until 9 a.m. this morning. some of the hardest hit areas when it comes to low visibility along the peninsula and into the south bay. also traveling highway four this morning. you're going to encounter some very low fog around concord, walnut creek extending all the way back into pittsburgh. so be aware of that this morning. here's the dense fog advisory pretty much for everybody this morning until 9 a.m. so we're going to be dealing with this low cloud cover for the next several hours, 40s and 50s. as we get you out the door this morning. here's the fog forecast clearly at 715. we're still in and out of the low clouds, even though the fog advisory is done at 9 a.m, i don't think the fog is totally out of here until closer to 11 a.m. after that, the afternoon features a lot of sunshine out there. we are dry today. daytime highs right around 60

degrees. let's check in with gloria to see a closer look at the commute this morning. good morning. >> good morning to you, drew. yeah. you know, definitely foggy out there. as drew has been mentioning. we're going to take a live k here at our emeryville camera. you can see how foggy it is out there as traffic starts to build here in the bay area. you can see all those headlights heading towards the bay bridge and looking at your drive times there. highway four to san francisco, 40 minutes. and we have our photographer stephan stifter driving around this morning, and he's definitely been seeing some fog throughout the bay area. you can see right here live look, this is 92 westbound in hayward and it is a little foggy out there. so just throughout the bay area, if you are driving today, be prepared for that fog. low visibility may be hard to see out there. i definitely had that experience this morning. so you just want to give yourself a little bit more time today because of that fog. be extra careful. drive a little bit more slowly this morning if you're able to. reggie. >> thanks, gloria. happening today. a san francisco jury is going to reveal its verdict in the bob lee murder trial. the

tech executive was killed in san francisco last year. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here with the case. that's been laid out over the past couple of months in court, and the possible outcomes. lena. >> reggie. it took jurors a total of nine days to deliberate. coming in with a verdict just before heading home for the day yesterday. keep in mind this all started back in october. tech consultant nima momeni is accused of murdering cashapp founder bob lee back in april of last year. his back in attorneys argued he stabbed lee in self-defense. they claimed it was actually lee who first pulled a knife on momeni in a drug fueled rage, the prosecution arguing the opposite, saying momeni targeted lee. they say he believed his sister had been drugged and sexually assaulted by a man lee had introduced to her. >> if he is convicted of any charge, what will happen next is about six weeks from now, there will be a sentencing hearing where both sides will present information to the court as to what is the appropriate sentence

january 19th. yesterday, the ceo and president elect donald trump met at mar a lago, and trump also discussed the future of tiktok at his recent press conference. he credited the app to helping him get reelected. now that's a turn from trump's first term, where he also tried to ban the app during that meeting. now, during the meeting with trump, the ceo insisted that the company does not share american data. one of the main concerns behind that ban. >> i have seen no evidence that the chinese government has access to that data. they have never asked us. we have not provided. >> the social media app ceo is also appealing to the supreme court, hoping they will overturn that ban. tiktok filed an emergency appeal to the court yesterday, saying the ban violates the first amendment. if the supreme court does take up the case, or tiktok's chinese owner does not sell the app, tiktok is set to be banned in the u.s. starting on january 19th, and that's a day before trump takes office. of course, he could work on a solution once

he is in office, and i know a lot of people are definitely keeping a close eye on this one. amanda. yeah. >> gloria. thank you. luigi mangione may be extradited back to new york as early as this morning. he's accused of killing united health care ceo brian thompson. sources tell abc mangione is almost certain to waive extradition from pennsylvania. over the weekend, mangione added a high profile defense attorney to his legal team. she says a potential defense strategy would be to plea to be to plea a case of not guilty due to insanity. >> state superintendent tony thurmond is backing a bill to essentially keep immigration officials out of schools. this comes amid promises from president elect donald trump to rescind long term protections against deportation. this proposed bill is intended to safeguard student attendance and state funding in schools by protecting against immigration enforcement. the bill has an urgency clause in it, meaning it could move quickly through the legislature. >> some neighbors in vallejo are

signing up in support of getting the chp into the city to combat crime. more than 3000 people have signed an online petition to urge the governor to deploy the chp and sheriff's deputies to assist vallejo police. those who support the petition say vallejo is experiencing an alarming increase in crime. the police department is dealing with a staffing shortage. no one from the city has responded to our request for comment yet. the incoming trump administration is causing growing concerns for supporters of the california high speed rail project. state democrats worry about how the new administration will handle existing federal grants if they terminate those awards. a lawsuit will likely follow, which will further delay the train's progress. many republican representatives are already against the rail project. according to the san francisco chronicle, democrats say the longer the project is put on hold, the more expensive it becomes. >> china is extending visa free travel in hopes of growing its
