over the killing of cash app founder bob lee, and we're seeing more fallout from the storms that hit the bay area, including a mudslide impacting a highway. on this day 35 years ago, the simpsons made their television debut. now, the series is celebrating this unprecedented milestone. >> i was just thinking about how at school, we were banned from wearing the bart simpson shirt. oh wow, how far we've come on this. tuesday, december 17th, the year 2024. >> all right. the year 2024. thank you for that. you're welcome. all year, all year long. >> all right. i know it's been foggy. i was coming in from san jose. i know you were coming in from the peninsula. yeah. >> that's the and that's the area that is really getting hit hard by the fog this morning. so we'll take a live look outside. like amanda said, this is a live look at our san jose camera. we've been tracking the low clouds all morning long. you can see right now visibility here. we're down to about a third of a mile. winds are light, high humidity. that is why we're seeing the fog out there this morning. here's a look at the area wide map. we've actually

seen a bit of improvement in the north bay over the last hour. but clearly you can see parts of the east bay, especially traveling highway four this morning. you have a lot of low visibility, low visibility up and down the peninsula. be aware of that. the dense fog advisory is with us until 9 a.m. this morning. it's pretty much for virtually everybody out there right now. so what we'll find is that fog is going to linger for the next several hours. use those low beams this morning like gloria has been talking about. add some extra distance and time to the cars and the commute this morning around you, because that fog is with us through about 9 a.m. after 9 a.m, we'll start to see increasing sunshine. the afternoon is actually looking beautiful. we'll get a lot of sunshine and some dry conditions, so highs will go into the low 60s later on this afternoon. let's check in with gloria and see that commute. >> good morning. yeah. you know, it is very foggy out there this morning. we're seeing a lot of fog, especially right now in the peninsula in san jose. check this out. this is a live look right now on northbound 101 around south san francisco area. our photographer stefan stifter has been at it all morning long,

and he has seen that fog out there. so as we are mentioning throughout the morning, just give yourself a little bit more time. it could be hard to see out there. i know i had that experience driving from the peninsula into the city, so you just want to be very, very careful. and we're going to go over to san jose. this is our 87 camera. this is one of the areas we're seeing the most fog this morning is in san jose, north of 87 towards the san jose airport. a lot of fog. highway 101 also there, you know, seeing that fog but no major issues despite the heavy fog this morning. we do want to also tell you about an issue that we are tracking. this is in sunol on southbound 680 before 84. there's a stalled big rig that's blocking the right lane. there's a backup to castlewood drive. it's causing about a 16 minute delay right now, guys. >> all right, gloria, thank you. and this morning, we're going to find out the verdict in a murder case that has made national headlines for over a year now, a jury in san francisco is set to announce their decision in the trial over the killing of tech executive and cash app founder

bob lee. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here in studio with a look at some of the potential outcomes. lena. >> amanda. after nine long days of deliberations, jurors have finally reached a verdict in this high profile trial, which first started back in october. during the trial, his attorneys argued he stabbed cash app founder bob lee in self-defense. they claimed it was actually lee who first pulled a knife on mckinney in a drug fueled rage, the prosecution arguing the opposite, saying mckinney targeted lee. they say many believed his sister had been drugged and sexually assaulted by a man lee had introduced to her. legal expert randall knox says the jury had a lot to consider to start with. >> do people agree that it was premeditated and deliberate with malice aforethought? if 12 people don't agree to that, then they consider whether it's second degree murder, if they don't agree that he intended to kill him with that mental state, it could conceivably be reduced

to voluntary manslaughter. >> i think the big question for this jury is what did they think of mr. mckinney's testimony? did they give him the benefit of the doubt? and how did that play into their verdict? >> legal analyst stephen clark, who you just heard from, believes it could be his own testimony that could have ultimately swayed jurors. the verdict will be read in court this morning at 930. if he is convicted of any charges, clark says he will come back for a sentencing hearing in about six weeks. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. and later this morning, we will bring you the news of that verdict as soon as it breaks. tune in here on abc seven or wherever you stream. >> we're following up on a story we first told you about yesterday on abc. seven mornings, a nasty air boat crash in the florida everglades. a bay area youth football team was on the boat when it crashed into another boat friday. members of the team and parents were sent flying into the swamp. and now

we're hearing from one of the mothers on board. this is alyssa windham. she says no one saw the other boat until it was too late. >> when i woke up, children were in the water. i believe we were knocked out a few seconds. the other boat was on top of our boat. and it just took a while to kind of realize what was going on. >> windham is several months pregnant and now has a broken tailbone. 16 people told her were taken to the hospital. everyone survived. her young son is shaken up, but physically okay. >> new details this morning about the tornado that left some major damage in scotts valley over the weekend. we're now hearing from a cal fire battalion chief who was injured. you see his truck there? manny garcia says the tornado sent his work truck flying into the air before it landed on its side. people who were close by had to break the windshield so he could get out. >> at that time, i looked around

and noticed there was a more than five cars flipped over. debris all over the roadway. power poles just leaning. and i'm thinking to myself, like, what just happened? like, we don't get tornadoes here, but this looks like a tornado. >> oh my god. garcia's fire gear was thrown into the trees by the wind. luckily, he walked away with only some minor scrapes and bruises. >> investigators in madison, wisconsin are trying to figure out how a 15 year old girl got a gun. they say killed at least two people at her school. a student and teacher died and six others were injured. two are in critical condition. a second grader alerted police of the violence happening on campus. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero with what we know about the investigation. >> this morning, madison, wisconsin's abundant life christian school's doors are closed to all but investigators after a teenage student brought a handgun and opened fire in a study hall monday, according to

officials. the 911 call came in just before 11 a.m, they add from a second grade student at the school. >> don't let that soak in for a minute. a second grade student called 911 at 10:57 a.m. report a shooting at school. >> officers entered the school within four minutes, finding the shooter killed two people. six more were taken to the hospital with injuries. >> i heard gunshots and screaming and it was all really scary and i was like, terrified. so were my friends. >> investigators say the suspect, 15 year old natalie renaud, who went by samantha, took her own life. police cleared the rest of the school room by room as parents arrived to pick up their children, britt and kyle. grange, speaking with abc's alex perez are grateful their kids are okay. >> i'm very, very, very thankful. i mean, the gut wrenching feeling that you feel

when you get that notification. there's no like you always just hope that never happens. and it happened today. we can't do it. >> the community gathered in a prayer service last night as investigators searched the alleged shooter's home and social media accounts, all looking for answers in the latest school shooting for the lessons not yet learned. >> we've got to care about this as a problem. you can't just again be number one on the planet for school shootings, for mass shootings, and not see that as a problem. >> this is the 488th mass shooting in the u.s. this year, according to gun violence archive. the suspect's parents are cooperating with investigators. christiane cordero, abc news, washington. >> this morning, a big headache. if you drive in the santa cruz mountains, a portion of highway nine is closed after recent storms caused a mudslide. and. gloria. this isn't the first time. >> it isn't reggie. it's the second year in a row that there's been a big mudslide on this portion of highway nine.

it's between redwood gulch road and sanborn in the saratoga area. we have video of it right here. you can see just a big mess. caltrans decided to close the highway yesterday. officials say the mud is just too wet and soupy for crews to clean it up. crews have been actively working to improve the stretch since september to install new drainage and improve the hillside. last year, a similar slide took out two roads, including a driveway that leads to five homes. a temporary road was installed, but the county says a private driveway is not their responsibility. that's left residents frustrated because they can't fix their driveway until a permanent road is finished. >> how long is it going to take for them to really support that road? because we were at their mercy, like, you know, they they hold all the cards as far as what we can do. >> a timeline for a permanent road has been vague, but the county says the temporary road should be safe this winter. now, as for highway nine, caltrans is hoping to clear the road and

reopen it tomorrow. so i know some residents, like probably those there, want a break from this rain or are they going to get it? >> yeah, we have a couple of days where dry weather is in the forecast, but out there this morning it's the fog that is an issue. we have some low clouds, a live look from our exploratorium camera looking at the sf skyline right now. we're at 48 degrees in the city. we do have visibility that has ebbed and flowed around about a mile right now, so we'll take a look at the visibility map where we do have some localized low clouds. san jose. we're down to a half mile visibility a quarter of a mile in concord. certainly traveling highway four this morning, you'll encounter some of that low visibility, especially along the peninsula as well. we find improving conditions, though, in the north bay, where that fog is starting to lift a bit between novato and santa rosa. so here's a look at future weather. the fog will linger through 9 a.m. the dense fog advisory is going to expire at 9 a.m, but i think it's closer to ten. 11 a.m. we're totally through with this fog. there you can see it burns off and we'll see a lot of sunshine

from new york to paris without a ticket last month, is in trouble again. authorities say svetlana dali cut off her ankle monitor over the weekend. her roommate saw it and reported her missing. dali was caught on a greyhound bus headed to canada. yesterday she had made it to buffalo from philadelphia. she is expected to be charged with bail jumping, and she could face up to five years in federal prison. >> a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the pacific nation island of vanuatu today, killing at least one person. surveillance video is going to show you how much shaking there was off the coast of the capital city of port vila. tsunami warnings were issued. they were later canceled. several buildings were damaged, including the building that houses the u.s. embassy. red cross volunteers are there

fog. be extra careful. we want to show you throughout the bay area, you could see the patches of fog that are affecting our drive this morning and really impacting that visibility today. and we also want to tell you about an incident that we're tracking. this is in mountain view. multiple vehicle crashes blocking the right lane. there is a backup to fremont avenue and the speeds are down to seven miles per hour. so we'll keep checking on that for you throughout the morning. reggie aqui. >> all right. thank you. gloria. happening today, a san francisco jury is going to reveal its verdict in the bob lee murder trial. the tech executive was killed in san francisco last year. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here with this case. that's been laid out over the past couple of months in court. and the possible outcomes we could see. >> lena reggie aqui it took jurors a total of nine days to deliberate, coming in with a verdict just before heading home for the day yesterday. and keep in mind, this all started back in october. tech consultant tech consultant nima momeni is accused of murdering cashapp founder bob lee back in april of last year. his attorneys argued

he stabbed lee in self-defense. they claimed it was actually lee who first pulled a knife on mckinney in a drug fueled rage. the prosecution arguing the opposite, saying mckinney targeted lee. they say mckinney believed his sister had been drugged and sexually assaulted by a man lee had introduced to her. >> if he is convicted of any charge, what will happen next is about six weeks from now, there will be a sentencing hearing where both sides will present information to the court as to what is the appropriate sentence based on a number of factors. >> jurors will first consider first degree murder charges if it was premeditated and deliberate. if all 12 don't agree with that, then they'll consider if it's second degree murder. legal experts say if they don't agree that mckinney intended to kill him with that mental state, it could then be reduced to voluntary manslaughter. the verdict will be read in a san francisco courtroom this morning at 930.

live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. and this morning, a last ditch effort to save tiktok. gloria. the social media company is hoping the supreme court or president elect trump could come to the rescue to keep the app available in the u.s. >> that's right. amanda. tiktok ceo jose chu is hoping to overturn the ban that's set to start on january 19th. yesterday, chu and president elect donald trump met at mar a lago, and trump also discussed the future of tiktok at his recent press conference. he credited the app to help in getting him reelected. now that's a turn from trump's first term, where he also tried to ban the app. during that meeting with trump, chu insisted that the company does not share american data. that's one of the main concerns behind the ban. it's a claim that he has maintained since testifying before congress last year. >> i have seen no evidence that the chinese government has access to that data. they have never asked us. we have not provided. >> the social media app ceo is also appealing to the supreme

court hoping they will overturn the ban. tiktok filed an emergency appeal to the court yesterday, saying the ban violates the first amendment. if the supreme court does take up the case, or tiktok's chinese owner does not sell the app, tiktok is set to be banned in the u.s. starting on january 19th. that is the day before trump takes office, and of course, he could work on a solution once he is in office. amanda. >> all right, gloria, thank you. trump also says his team is looking into the possibility of privatizing the u.s. postal service. he says it's, quote, not the worst idea i've heard. trump says shipping is different today because of amazon, ups and fedex. the constitution gives congress the power to establish post offices. luigi mangione may be extradited back to new york as early as this morning. he's accused of killing united health care ceo brian thompson. sources tell abc mangione is almost certain to waive extradition from pennsylvania. over the weekend, mangione added a high

profile defense attorney to his legal team. and she says the potential defense strategy would be to plea a case of not guilty due to insanity. >> state superintendent tony thurman is backing a bill to essentially keep immigration officials out of schools. >> the bill's been introduced today. the bill says that schools can't work with ice, and ice can't be on campus. and the bill calls for a one mile radius around schools, recognizing that sometimes ice officials might be sort of lying in wait near campus. again, we don't want students to stay home. we don't want attendance to be suppressed. >> this bill has an urgency clause in it, meaning it could move quickly through the legislature. >> some neighbors in vallejo are signing up in support of getting the chp into the city to combat crime. more than 3000 people have signed an online petition to urge the governor to deploy

the chp and sheriff's deputies to assist vallejo police. those who support the petition say vallejo is experiencing an alarming increase in crime. the police department is dealing with a staffing shortage. no one from the city has responded to our requests for comment. the incoming trump administration is causing some growing concerns for supporters of the california high-speed rail project. state democrats worry about how the new administration will handle existing federal grants if they terminate those awards. a lawsuit will likely follow, which will further delay the train's progress. many republican representatives are already against the rail project, according to the san francisco chronicle. democrats say the longer the project is put on hold, the more expensive it becomes. >> coming up, the push locally and statewide for beds to address homelessness. >> and you are looking. we will be taking a live look at the new york stock exchange. another update coming next. >> we're also going to take you behind the scenes of the new movie mufasa, with original music from lin-manuel miranda.

from the lion king to the weather king, here's drew foster. >> nicely done. this morning, the weather king is tracking some fog out there. here's a live look at our south beach camera this morning, where you can just see a few headlights moving through some of this low cloud cover. this morning, the dense fog advisory is with us until 9 a.m, and you can see some of the areas when it comes to visibility that are finding problems. concord oakland this morning less than a mile. visibility improving conditions to be found though in the south bay, san jose up to a mile and a half. that's better than it was, just, say, 30 minutes ago. so temperatures right now with that fog, we're mainly in the 40s and in the low 50s. 49 in santa rosa this morning, 51 in oakland. that fog, 51 in palo alto. so taking a look at the morning planner, we have that fog early on. that dense fog advisory will expire at 9 a.m. we'll see increasing sunshine as we approach noon. and later on today it's a dry day. we'll get a sunny afternoon here and really comfortable temperatures

involving the san mateo county sheriff's office. the san mateo county district attorney just announced he will not file time card fraud charges against a union head who has been highly critical of sheriff christina corpus. here's i-team reporter dan noyes. >> i am disgusted at how low these people will go. >> that's sheriff christina corpus. a little over a month ago, blasting a scathing audit report into her office that alleged abuse of power, intimidation and retaliation, and a personal relationship with her chief of staff. the i-team has since identified problems with the report, including missing pages from an interview

transcript and outright mistakes. >> this is a hatchet job of an inquiry, which was commissioned with a predetermined outcome. >> but on the same day the report came out. corpus took action against one of her loudest critics, arresting the president of the deputy sheriffs association on charges of time card fraud. carlos tapia self surrendered and kept speaking out. he read a statement at a news conference today. >> i'm grateful to the district attorney's office for recognizing these charges for what they were. yet another attempt at retaliation from sheriff corpus at our expressed loss of confidence in her administration. >> after a month of investigation, district attorney steve wagstaffe has announced he's dropping the case. >> so what the sheriff's office had, what the investigator had. it wasn't wrong. it was simply they the investigator did not talk to the additional people in their own his own fiscal team, as well as with the county hr to

country's strategic oil reserve. experts say trump's support of cryptocurrency is really helping. >> there's a lot of risk around bitcoin. regulatory environment continues to still be choppy, but the path for bitcoin is much more positive. and blue skies today than some stormy clouds that we've seen over the last few years. >> earlier this month, trump named silicon valley entrepreneur david sachs as his artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency czar. he also said he would nominate pro cryptocurrency washington attorney paul atkins as the new head of the securities and exchange commission. san francisco officials are asking the state for more money to get some of the most mentally ill, unhoused people off of the streets. according to the chronicle, the city is asking for $144 million to add 175 new treatment beds. 50 would be in locked psychiatric facilities to treat people with severe mental health disorders. those facilities treat people in

conservatorships, which is when the city has legal authority to make decisions about their care. the money would come from a $6.4 billion mental health bond passed by voters in march. and now it's our abc seven mornings adventure. we highlight things that are happening today here in the bay area. >> first, the san jose city council will vote on expanding its emergency interim housing program. the resolution would allow the city's housing director to extend grant agreements with its nonprofit partners in order to keep six existing interim housing units up and running. the housing program is part of san jose's long term strategy to fight homelessness. >> the smart train system is expected to be back up and running this morning. storm damage in the north bay shut down service on sunday. transit officials say a downed trees blocked or damaged the train tracks in multiple spots. >> china is extending visa free travel in hopes of growing its tourism industry. the extension has tripled the amount of time visitors can spend in china without a visa to ten days.

previously, eligible travelers could visit for 3 to 6 days without a visa, depending on the destination. china has been making several changes to increase visitation to the country this year. foreigners entering the mainland hit a record high since tracking began in 2014. >> and now it's your morning money report. if you've been to the grocery store lately, you've probably noticed that the price for some food continues to go up. in some stores, certain items are in short supply, so in the bay area, eggs have been one of those items. local stores have been selling out as their supplies have been limited. that's because of the bird flu outbreak. the price has gone up along with the shortage about 40% this year. over the past, i should say, the price of beef, coffee and other drinks have also gone up, but only about 5%, economists say. when it comes to the increase in egg prices, they should start to come down once the bird flu outbreak is over. the federal reserve begins its last meeting of 2024 today. experts predict the fed will

announce another interest rate drop at the end of the meeting tomorrow. however, they warn we should not get used to these cuts. with inflation staying put at a little over 2%, the fed is looking at fewer cuts next year. >> december marks more than just holiday season. it's bowl season. college football has 36 bowl games. 31 can be seen right here on abc seven and our sister station espn. the san jose state spartans will play on christmas eve in the hawaii bowl. meanwhile, cal plays against unlv this wednesday in the art of sport la bowl. these games mean a lot to the seniors playing in their final college games. >> just being able to be in a bowl game, being able to go over there to hawaii is a blessing, you know? i know the guys are excited, the coaching staff is excited. and you know, we're ready to go over there and put on a showcase. >> just really trying to enjoy my time with the guys, just try and slow down and just have as much quality time with them as possible. you know, before it's all said and done.

>> the bowl season ends on january 20th with the national championship game. >> as part of our mission to build a better bay area, we're always happy to highlight neighbors making a difference in the east bay. a group of community members fed up with piles of trash thrown onto the side of the road, are banding together to do something about it. they've been working on grizzly peak road in the hills above berkeley. a group of more than 70 volunteers say they've been hard at work for over a year, working to clear over 20 tons of trash. and they have quite the name the east bay trash pandas. >> this is 100% a team effort. we had people, you know, elbow deep, shoulder deep into the poison oak yesterday. we want to put pressure on the landowners. you know, uc berkeley, this is your property. you're tasked with cleaning this area up. you've got to do the work. >> the group says they've reached out to put pressure on uc berkeley, requesting that it takes responsibility for the neglected sites. we've reached out to uc berkeley for comment. we have not yet heard back. >> in less than a decade,

peninsula that's been dealing with a lot of low visibility. this morning, less than a mile from concord to oakland, down to a quarter of a mile in mountain view. so remember, use your low beams this morning, add some extra distance to yourself and the cars around you as we deal with this fog. so looking at the day planner, we have that dense fog advisory right now. sun's up here at 720, but it's going to take some time seeing it better visibility here. by noon the fog will have lifted. we get sunshine later on today by 4 p.m. we have those dry skies and temperatures maxing out in the low 60s for the most part. so morning dense fog advisory with us until 9 a.m. this morning, breaking for afternoon sunshine. we'll go to 60 in napa and in richmond, about 61 in the city and oakland, 64 in san jose. good. about 58 for a high in antioch overnight tonight. we're not expecting widespread fog like we're seeing out there right now. we'll find temperatures overnight in the 30s and in the 40s heading into those dry days tomorrow and thursday, here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we actually have another round,

unfortunately, of santa ana winds in southern california. a red flag warning is posted today and tomorrow. the storm track is to our north. clearly you can see portland and seattle getting the rain this morning. it's not until the weekend that the storm track dips a little bit more to the south, and that's why we see rain returning to the forecast. so here's future weather showing you this is saturday at noon. we have some light showers in the forecast. nothing like we experienced last weekend with those destructive winds and heavy rain. at times these light showers linger into sunday and into monday as well, with another system moving in early next week. so take a look at the rainfall chances this weekend. not a ton of rain here locally. i think a lot of us probably around a quarter to a half of an inch of rain. some of the higher rainfall totals around eureka and crescent city, closer to the center of some of these storms. so the accuweather seven day forecast shows you we're dealing with morning fog that is dense right now. that dense fog advisory will continue until 9
