guilty of killing cash app founder bob lee, convicted of second degree murder. this case generated a lot of national attention, initially with the debate over violent crime in san francisco. prosecutors arguing many stabbed to death in april of 2023 after lee had introduced mommy's sister to a drug dealer. his legal team argued it was self-defense. >> it's just this case was extremely hard to prove because it was just nima's word versus my brother's word, which he's not here to be able for anybody to be able to hear those words. >> my son is not such a thing, such a person. he's the kindest person. every mother would love to have a son like him. i know my son well. >> many could face up to life in prison. there is a hearing scheduled for january the 10th, and as the case played out over the months, many say the city of san francisco itself was also a victim of this crime. following

bob lee's murder, the city's reputation took a hit in both the national and even the international media. abc seven news reporter tim johns takes a look at the damage done, and how city leaders are hoping this verdict proves the critics wrong. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins triumphant tuesday after nemo mckinney was found guilty of the murder of bob lee jenkins. taking time to thank her team, but also to call out some of the high profile people who use the crime to bash san francisco. the da specifically mentioning tech billionaire elon musk, who tweeted about the attack to his millions of followers in 2023. back then, musk speculated it was a random attack by a repeat offender, and we knew it was something different. >> and i think today proved once again that we are a city committed to accountability. we are a city committed to public safety. >> musk wasn't the only one posting about the incident. many in the tech world jumped on the attack, using it as an example of how they believe san francisco was a city full of crime and lawlessness, and now

you have to overcome that. >> so every time something happens, that's a high profile event like this murder, you know, it tends there tends to be a piling on effect. >> jim wunderman is the president of the bay area council. he says lee's murder was another blow to a city already struggling after the pandemic. even if the numbers didn't back that up, data from the fbi and local police department shows that san francisco has one of the lowest homicide rates of any major city in the country, a trend that's been happening for years. while the justice system is, of course, designed to be fair. people like san mateo county district attorney steve wagstaffe say high profile trials like this one add an extra layer of pressure on everyone involved, something that wagstaffe says. san francisco da brooke jenkins surely felt she. >> of course she wants justice. that's her number one goal, but she recognizes that people will judge her city, her county a lot by outcomes. >> and what occurs with the trial now over, city officials

is planned on friday to remove fallen trees, clean the drainage system and to shore up the slope, which will help as more rain is coming. as sandhya just told us, well, oakland is trying to deal with massive, massive budget deficit and they are now moving forward with a plan of budget cuts. and the coliseum site is going to play a big role in the immediate future. the vote happened an hour ago and came after a lengthy debate that included public comment. safety was a big concern, not just from the people that were commenting, but from council members as well. there was an amendment made to take $10 million from the sale of the coliseum property to help keep fire stations open. you may recall the budget called for brownouts of those fire stations. council president nikki fortunato bass acknowledged the city is in a difficult spot. >> okay. thank you everyone. that was certainly not easy. however, we look forward to continuing to partner with the administration, the finance team and all our department heads, as well as our workforce and the public to continue putting

oakland on solid ground. >> one thing that was also dealt with was whether jobs will be cut or deleted. in the words of city council member dan kalb, for now, there is going to just be a hiring freeze. fortunato bass also took over as interim mayor at the end of tonight's meeting. all right. with just a week to go before a major december holidays, christmas is coming. of course, amazon workers could soon go on strike at a number of california national facilities. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has more on workers demands and what it could mean for your holiday packages. >> amazon workers at at least four california facilities could walk off in a matter of days, just a week before christmas and hanukkah. that after the teamsters union authorized a potential strike. >> this is a big deal. >> amazon, one of the largest corporations in the world, is facing workers organizing from coast to coast in new york and illinois and right here in california.

>> kent wong is a labor attorney at ucla. he's well aware of the back and forth between amazon and its workers. the amazon teamsters put out this video tuesday. they're upset about wages, benefits and working conditions. >> san bernardino facility is the largest air hub in the western united states. more than 1000 workers are employed there, and a strike at that facility could be very disruptive. in the critical week leading up to christmas. >> the teamsters say they represent thousands of workers at ten amazon facilities across the country. amazon, though, calls that a false narrative, saying they do not represent thousands of amazon employees and drivers. stanford's bill gould says the impact if you're trying to send gifts, really depends on the amount of support that the teamsters actually have. >> i think that it's a genuine narrative. i think that there is a problem there involving abuses

and inequities in employment conditions. we don't know really how successful the teamsters have been in garnering support. >> amazon says they have upped pay, and the average worker makes 22 an hour, 29 an hour with benefits. >> we see the cost of rent going up. we see the cost of food going up. we see the cost of the gas pumps going up. and you cannot live and support a family on $22 an hour. >> as for if the strike will happen and when it will happen, that has yet to be determined. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> well, as you well know, time is running out to finish your holiday shopping and your shipping. the usps deadline for ground shipping is tomorrow. if you want to get your gift somewhere by christmas for priority mail express, you have until saturday the 21st. the fedex shipping deadline was today. you can still do same day

shipping all the way through the 24th. the deadline for usps is thursday or the 23rd with next day air, but time is short. addressing homelessness and protecting our environment are both big parts of building a better bay area and in the south bay. an outreach effort is underway now to help relocate people living near waterways. some first steps were taken today, and abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has the story. >> reporter the city of san jose is preparing to relocate 1000 homeless people living along creeks and rivers. on tuesday, mayor matt mehan joined an outreach team off coyote creek to see, after the recent rains, the amount of plastic and metals, the shopping carts, the trash. mehan said the city has about 147 miles of waterways right now. they're concentrating on 12 miles that are most impacted by the homeless. the city has started counting how many people are there in preparation for next year, when encampments along waterways will

be cleared. >> this count was later in the day as people were awake, going out tent by tent, talking to people and actually having them fill out a survey and individually surveying every single human being. >> the city approved an unprecedented $27 million investment for this cleanup effort. mehan said the funds will help add over 1000 safe and managed places for people to stay. >> they come in different forms. this is safe parking and safe sleeping. prefabricated modular units, converted motels. most of the units will be rooms with a door that locks path. >> santa clara county is a statewide agency helping the city and valley water gather inaccurate head count. >> athletes with services and not enforcement. >> regional director tamara chavez says her team has the expertise to build trust with people and connect them to the right support. >> it might be hygiene kits, it might be food, it will be water. it might be pet food for their animals that are living with them and part of their families.

repeat offenders can now face felony charges for theft and penalties for drug use and trafficking. fentanyl will increase as well. some solano county residents want more to be done to crack down on sideshows. >> how ridiculous does do things have to get as far as the lawlessness, where people come to our city and think they can just do sideshows and get away with it? destroy property, hurt people. so it was kind of the last straw of this woman. >> launched a petition urging governor newsom to send in the chp to help address the crime problems. vallejo's city manager says that he and the mayor have also asked the governor for some support. the chp says officers are advised to help on city streets when they are free and in that area. governor newsom is helping teachers identify students with reading difficulties like dyslexia. the tools that he approved were developed by a panel of experts newsom assembled earlier this year. newsom himself was ten when he learned that he had

dyslexia. he's talked about its impact on him over the years. >> i'm the kid with my head down. i'm the school, the kid with, you know, the heart pounding and sweaty palms just praying the teacher doesn't call on me. but within that frame of struggle are enormous strengths that were allowed to overcome. and, you know, one out of five people, as many as 20% of americans have some form of language based learning disabilities. >> he was very candid, talking about dyslexia as he as he has been starting next year, students in kindergarten through second grade will be required to be screened for reading difficulties using the newly approved tools affecting 1.2 million students. the u.s. department of justice will pay nearly $116 million to resolve lawsuits brought by more than 100 women who say they were sexually assaulted at the now shuttered federal women's prison in dublin. the settlements come just a week after the bureau of prisons announced the permanent closure of that facility, citing infrastructure issues and

staffing problems. all new cars in the united states will be required to sound a warning when rear seat passengers don't buckle their belts. the national highway safety administration made that announcement. the agency estimates this new rule will save 50 lives and prevent 500 injuries each year. it will go into effect in september of 2027. that warning sound is currently required for driver seats. a similar rule for front seat passengers goes into effect in september of 2026. all right. a major step forward in the effort to end those junk fees that we all pay. today, the federal trade commission finalized a rule that would ban surprise fees for event tickets, hotels and vacation rentals. the rule would require businesses to disclose total prices up front, rather than tacking on extra costs like convenience fees. you've seen those when people check out online, it's projected to save consumers 53,000,000 hours in wasted time searching

for the total price. how much does it really cost? ftc chair lina khan sat down for an exclusive interview with abc news. >> this should really provide the american people with just some more clarity and confidence, so they don't feel like they're getting, you know, cheated. this is really about saving people money and saving people time. >> the ftc says the final rule would take effect around april. frontier airlines has a new all you can fly pass, and for the next 24 hours, it's being offered at a discounted price. the airline's go wild pass is good for one year starting in april. it allows customers to book flights with as little as a day's notice for domestic travel, and up to ten days in advance for international trips. there are some additional fees and restrictions. the pass will cost you $299 until midnight tomorrow. then the price jumps to $699. all right. but you don't want to go anywhere the
