evacuations in southern california just 50 miles east of los angeles. homes and businesses threatened. flames engulfing the hillside >> we get a call from the neighbor that we're on fire. we're trying to water our mountain. literally 20, 30 feet from my back yard. >> ginger: fire fighters working through the night to try and contain the blaze using heavy machinery to hold the line. you can see the fire approaching a high school. red flag and wind alerts in place and santa ana winds up to 71 miles an hour sweep through the region. >> i was terrified. i thought right before christmas time that our house was going to be on fire and all our property would be burned. >> ginger: the cause of the blaze is under investigation. most of this will be bad throughout the morning and then the alerts go until 6 p.m. all the air pushing down compressing, critical fire danger, including the santa monica mountains. >> michael: you're tracking the new storm that's on the move

this morning, plus dangerous fog and what it means for people trying to get an early start to the holidays. >> ginger: robin, you know the causeway over lake ponchartrain. that's one of the longest in the state of louisiana. well, they had dozens of vehicles involved here. they had 15 people at least go to the hospital because fog was so bad and so dense. we're doing that again this morning for so many places, from houston down to near zero. new orleans has quarter mile visibility. tuscaloosa, parts of georgia, quarter mile. all the way up into virginia and eastern tennessee. so please be careful. try not to drive if you don't absolutely have to. it's all under this front with the flood watches up from memphis through just north of nashville. so if you're traveling on i 40 or coming north/south there could be strong to severe storms that come along with this. eventually by wednesday night, it comes here. snow if you are in the cats g reu lls. >> george: now the investigation into the madison wisconsin school shooting that left a student and teacher dead, six

others injured after a 15-year-old girl opened fire. alex perez is in madison with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. through her social media accounts, we're now getting a better picture of what the 15-year-old may have been thinking in the moments before the shooting. this morning the search for answers. investigators closely sifting through natalie rupnow's social media accounts, hoping to figure out why the teen shot and killed a teacher and student at her school, injuring six others. >> identifying a motive is our top priority. but at this time, it appears the motive was a combination of factors. we are talking to students to understand whether bullying was one of those multiple factors. >> reporter: police say the shooter brought a handgun to school and opened fire in a study hall classroom monday. many of the families at abundant life are parishioners including one of the survivors. >> what she had to see, no child

should see. she was right there in the room when it was taking place. >> reporter: investigators digging through the shooter's digital footprint, discovering posts made in the minutes before the shooting. >> we are working to authenticate the documents you see online that some are referring to as a manifesto. >> reporter: james daughter is a junior at abundant life. he said it's a refuge for many students who struggle at other schools. >> those who have been disenfranchised or bullied in other situations, you can find love here. you can find acceptance. ♪ i can only imagine ♪ >> reporter: overnight a vigil at the state capitol, remembering those who were killed. >> honestly, it's still kind of hard to think and feel feelings because of just how incredibly like emotionally and mentally taxing that experience was. you never really realize how much something like this affect you until it happens.

>> reporter: and authorities have collected evidence from the shooter's home and say her parents are cooperating. michael? >> michael: all right. thank you so much for that. we're gonna turn to the latest on the killing of united healthcare ceo brian thompson. the suspect is now facing an 11-count indictment including first degree murder and of committing an act of terrorism. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is here with details. >> reporter: in new york, first degree murder is charged sparingly, reserved for the most depraved killings. prosecutors said the assassination style murder of brian thompson was no ordinary killing. this morning luigi mangione is charged with murdering brian thompson in furtherance of an act of terrorism. >> this was a killing that was intended to evoke terror. >> reporter: sources say luigi mangione's writings describe a deepening fixation on the nation's biggest medical insurer

and increasing malice toward their perceived greed. prosecutors describe thompson's killing as highly choreographed violence. >> this was a frightening, well planned targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation. >> reporter: the 11 count indictment also charges luigi mangione with unawfully possessing a ghost gun. >> these weapons are increasingly p ly new york city and the entire country. >> reporter: the murder sparked an outpour of resentment at health insurance companies and admiration for the alleged killer, something new york's police commissioner called vile. >> social media has erupted with praise for this cowardly attack. people ghoulishly plastered posters threatening other ceo's with an x over mr. thompson's picture. >> reporter: authorities are now trying to bring mangione back from pennsylvania where he was arrested at an altoona mcdonald's. three days after the shooting, investigators spoke with

mangione's mother who did not rule out the killer could be her son. >> they had a conversation where she didn't indicate that it was her son but said it might be something she could see him doing. >> his attorney now tells abc news she expects mangione to waive extradition thursday. he could appear in a new york court the same day. the lawyer declined to comment on the indictment itself. if convicted mangione faces an almost certain sentence of life in prison without parole. >> robin: appreciate you. now the latest on the rash of drone sightings which began in the northeast. more sightings are being reported as far west as utah now. whit johnson is tracking it all. whit, on capitol hill, lawmakers joining many in expressing frustration. good morning. >> whit: exactly. intelligence officials say they are starting to get a clearer picture of what at least some of these sightings might be. a combination of lawfully operated drones and manned aircraft.

but many remain convinced there's more we don't know. this morning more suspected drone sightings, raising questions and frustration across the northeast. >> we've received only minimal information which leads me to believe our federal government has no idea, no clue, no reliable information about these drones. >> reporter: on capitol hill, members of the house intelligence committee meeting for a three hour classified briefing with top security officials from the fbi, cia and other agencies. >> we got a lot of answers, but there's some unanswered questions. i think, quite frankly, the technology of drones has outpaced the law. >> reporter: intelligence officials insist there is no reason to suspect any threat to the public. this following a series of sightings near military sites from new jersey to ohio to utah. now a drone buster at two bases in the northeast. >> essentially emits a signal which is able to interrupt the signal on the drone. >> reporter: energy agencies

knocking down news reports linking drone sightings to a small amount of medical grade radio active material that was temporarily lost in transit. the new jersey department of environmental protection issuing a statement to abc news saying, the material has been located, repackaged and sent to the manufacturer. the national nuclear security administration saying, it is not currently conducting any aerial operations in that region. lawmakers getting similar answers from security officials. >> we've asked this question over and over again. they are not federal government operations that emit gas, recovery, anything else. >> whit: despite criticism from both sides of the aisle, one thing the white house and lawmakers appear to agree on is that more needs to be done in the part of bipartisan legislation to monitor the massive increase in drone traffic in our air space. george? >> george: whit, thank you very much. now a deadly plane crash in hawaii. two people were killed on a training flight. gio benitez here with a story.

>> gio: a small plane made eight flights yesterday just fine. then came the final flight, where something went very very wrong and the tragedy was captured on camera. this morning dash cam video catching the last moments of an air flight in hawaii just before it crashed. the pilot overheard scrambling to find a place to land. >> kamaka 689 you are turning right, right? >> we have -- we're out of control here. >> okay. okay. if you can level it off, that's fine any runway, any place you can do it. >> gio: the plane slamming into an abandoned building. the explosion tearing off part of the building. fiery wreckage found strewn in the parking lot. the kamaka air was conducting a training mission on the pilot lost control shortly after takeoff. >> an absolute tragedy occurred. >> gio: there was no one inside the building at the time. it's scheduled for demolition.

>> we always hope that there's somebody to help. tragically, today, that wasn't the case. >> gio: both people on board were killed. and our abc afill late in honolulu reports one of the pilots was just 22, a graduate training for his pilot license. kamaka is an air car go company not meant for passengers. the ntsb is investigating. >> michael: so sad. thank you very much, gio. now the social security fairness act and the key test vote this afternoon to advance it. elizabeth schulze has more on what's at stake. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is a critical test vote in the senate. in just a few hours on legislation that would put more money in the pockets of retirees. social security fairness act would expand benefits for nearly 3 million retired teachers, firefighters, police officers and other public servants. i would do that by repealing policies that limit social security payments for some retirees who also collect public pensions. the average monthly social security check right now for retired workers is about $2,000.

this bill did already pass the house with bipartisan support, but some republican senators are worried about its price tag, at about $200 billion it will add to the deficit. as it stands the social security trust fund is set to run out of money in just nine years. if this legislation to expand benefits doesn't pass the senate by the end of the session this week, lawmakers would have to start from scratch next year. robin? >> robin: many are watching this so closely. all right, elizabeth. thank you. a major medical break through. an alabama woman is providing new hope for people who desperately need an organ transplant because her new kidney came from a pig. morgan norwood has that story. good morning. >> this is just a fascinating story. she went into organ failure years after donating her kidney to her mother. she has been tethered to the dialysis chair. we sat down with her exclusively as she shares her hope for others.

>> i could feel the blood throw through my veins, how strong the kidney was pumping. >> reporter: she is only the fifth person in the world to receive a genetically modified organ from a pig. she's part of a growing group of trailblazers under going ground breaking pro-seizures which doctors say could help change the world. >> it is a multifacetted approach to try to relieve organ shortage. >> reporter: recipients are approved on a case by case basis. >> if you were to put an unmodified farm pig organ, whether kidney or heart, we would reject it in minutes. we're adding a gene that inhibits the immune system right to the organ. >> reporter: the first four recipients all passed within four months of their transplantses but lu tphr i is so far the healthiest person to receive a pig organ. she spent seven years on dialysis and five years waiting for a human kidney. her body would have rejected

hundreds of potential matches. >> in 2017 i heard the news of this research. it just gave me so much hope. you know? it just did. i said, i want to try it. >> reporter: this isn't the first time she's been involved in a kidney transplant. back in 1999 she donated one of her kidneys to her mother. now she hopes her latest procedure will help future generations. >> it's like getting a second chance at life. >> she is still being monitored but is doing incredibly well. the next big step is for approval of human clinical trials and these procedures could expand on a wider scale. she looked great. i felt like she could do laps during that interview. she has no much energy. >> robin: you've been covering this story for many time. >> we went to the research farm, the research lab. it's incredible to see. scientists are on the verge of a break through.

>> reporter: good morning, robin. in a series of interviews l.a.'s new da has signaled he will take a harder line on the menendez brothers case than his predecessor. now the attorneys for the brothers and their family increasingly concerned, saying that just after two weeks on the job, hochman is already playing politics. this morning the lawyer representing 24 relatives who support the immediate release of the menendez brothers criticizing l.a.'s new d.a. for his recent media appearances. >> we should use that time wisely, meet with the family members, the family members are victims. they suffered loss. they've also seen the rehabilitation. they are the best people to talk to. >> reporter: hochman, sworn in last month, told abc news he plans to review all the evidence in the brother's 1989 murder of their parents and will speak with witnesses before weighing in on a case that has enthralled viewers of the recent documentary and drama series on their lives.

>> i told him everything. >> okay. everything about what? >> reporter: but hochman has taken the two deputy district attorneys who prepared the brothers resentencing off the case. what does that tell you when the d.a. has two people working on this case, who have been pushing towards some sort of early release, and now they're gone? >> it tells me that there's a chance that the d.a. is playing politics. right? that politics are coming into play here. and it concerns me that what's happening is there are favors being performed. >> reporter: at his first outreach to the menendez family was to the single family member opposed to erik and lyle's release, whose lawyer has been a supporter of hochman's. what does it say to the 24 family members you represent that his first call essentially on this case was to kitty's brother milton, who has opposed clemency and an early release?

>> right. it doesn't feel good. it doesn't feel good. >> reporter: last month a set back for the 53 and 56-year-old brothers. their resentencing hearing originally scheduled in mid december now postponed until the end of january. the sister of kitty delivering an empassioned plea. >> the truth is lyle and erik were failed by the very people who should have protected them. >> reporter: the d.a. recently addressing the claim that the state did not recognize the alleged sexual abuse the young boys endured at the hands of their father. telling deadline, erik was able to testify in great detail about all the sexual abuse he experienced. he was even able to testify about sexual abuse that lyle experienced. do you feel that was the case? >> i mean, the evidence shows it wasn't the case. you have a number of witnesses, a number of family members who weren't able to testify about the abuse they saw. >> now, hochman said he will look at the brother's rehabilitation in prison. both have been model prisoners. but hochman indicated he might

separate their resentencing cases which could mean erik could be released before lyle, who has a couple minor infractions. next hearing set for january 30th. >> george: now a gma exclusive. when chains lock their merchandise because of theft, it frustrated customers and employees but one chain is trying new technology to speed up shopping. will reeve has details. >> will: if you're in a city or many suburban area, you walk into cvs, you've likely felt the frustration to grab a toothbrush or anything else only to be thwarted by a plexiglas barrier. the stores do it to protect against theft but they've heard customers' complaints so they're trying something new and new age. frustrated customers are

complaining about locked up merchandise. >> every single hair product is locked up. >> reporter: retailers say they are turning to plexiglas cases to lock up every day items because of incidents like these. lot of stuff is locked up behind these. why is that? >> we've seen a massive increase in retail crime across not just cvs, but retailers around the country. so the amount of theft that's happening is up 30%. >> reporter: cvs piloting new technology that they say will cut out having to wait for an employee to unlock cases. chief merchandising officer gave us an exclusive first look at how it works. >> you come into our app. you click internal. move the phone closer. there's unlock cabinet. two seconds, hit unlock now. turn, pull. >> will: grab it and close the door. after grabbing the product, the customer will then need to close and lock the door.

the fda adding a box warning on a hormone free pill to treat hot flashes putting its most prominent warning on veozah. the fda issued a warning for a rare risk associated with this medication for a potentially serious liver injury. it is used to treat moderate to severe hot flashes, the fda first approved it in 2023. it's not a hormone therapy making it an option for patients who can't use hormone therapy because of history of stroke, heart attack, blood clots or liver disease. if you're on this medication, the fda saying you should be monitored with blood tests to make sure there are no liver issues. signs of potential liver issues, feeling tired, not eating, nausea, vomiting, unusual eurbing yellow skin. if you develop any potential liver issues, stop taking it, see a doctor right away. if you're concerned about starting it, talk to your doctor

to them and we didn't have to deal with them any more? for a second it was kind of funny. then i really thought about it like, oh, is she serious? i just remember telling her, for sure it would be easier but obviously that's not okay. >> reporter: shana and amber were friends who began cheering at a young age. how big a deal was cheerleading? >> apparently it was a very big deal. it was kind of how you made your name for yourself. >> reporter: for two years in a row, shana didn't make the junior high cheer team but amber did. according to prosecutors, wanda blamed verna and her daughter amber for squashing shana's chances, allegedly leading to ask her brother-in-law to hire a hit man to take verna out. in a shocking twist, terry worked with police to foil the alleged plan. he wore a wire and secretly recorded their conversations. wanda was found guilty of solicitation of capital murder, but the verdict was overturned

sitting down with juju chang to tell us more about the highly anticipated new season, season 2 premieres november, or december 26th on netflix. this morning a new branch of libraries. this is a bit of a change here. from squid games to dogs. a new branch of libraries is taking over the internet. on a recent vacation to a dog friendly hotel in california, sonic the golden retriever discovered a sanctuary beach resort. got on that beach. they have a library. posted the video on instagram where it racked up 35 million views in days. they tell us sonic would pick out his stick very carefully every morning, keep it with him the whole day. little different than real libraries. sometimes the family would have to replace the stick with a different one. and that's our "play of the day." we just thought that was a great idea. >> robin: that's cute. >> lara: finally, a live pod for you. one week until christmas day and start of hanukkah. philly is feeling the love. ike ejochi is live in the

wild horses of sable island. i've never been there but you feel like you're there when you open this book of photography. by roberto tedesco. it's so beautiful. what was it about this book? >> michael: the imagery, first of all. i went to a show in new york. i saw these images and had to meet the artist. went to the gallery to see all of the artwork they had there. sable island is an island off nova scotia. you have to get permission to tkpw there. if you go there and you don't get out in time, you get trapped by the tides. the horses got there because of all the ship wrecks back in the day. they were able to make it to the island where they run wild. it is just the most beautiful image. this one is called love. >> lara: i can feel it. >> robin: how appropriate. >> michael: roberto has become a really good friend. i just have always loved and appreciated his work. also, everything, just the beauty of this, the nature of the horses. >> lara: really great gift. we thank you guys for sharing those. hopefully, gave you all some good gift ideas.

morning. we're also seeing some backups there at the tolls to west grand avenue and vehicles just waiting to get on the bridge. speaking of the bridge, this is a look at our bay bridge camera so fogged over you could barely see anything. so if you are driving today, be careful with that fog. >> hey, gloria, we'll look at visibility. and just like you mentioned, we are seeing a lot of issues out there. you're looking at miles, how far you could see in some areas like hayward, san jose, only a quarter of a mile visibility. we're down to zero in parts of the city and in mountain view. so we do have this dense fog advisory until 11 a.m. after 11 a.m. it will be a mix of sun and clouds today and temperatures pleasant in the 60s. amanda. >> all right, drew, thank you. time now for live with kelly and mark. we'll be back at 11 for midday live. have ♪ ♪ >> announcer: it's "live with kelly and mark!" ♪ ♪ [cheers and applause]
