following saturday's tornado. >> we're seeing new video of the damage it caused. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> and good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm dion lim. that countdown is on. workers at several amazon warehouses, including one in san francisco, will be off the job and on the picket line come 6 a.m. tomorrow. >> they're upset about wages, benefits and working conditions. the teamsters union claims amazon has repeatedly refused to the union and negotiate contracts. in a statement tonight, the union warns, quote, if your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame amazon's insatiable greed. end quote one labor attorney says the timing of the strike is not a coincidence. >> one week before christmas and this is the busiest shopping season uh- all year. and this is a strategic time for the amazon workers to flex their muscles

and to say that it is unacceptable that when amazon profits are, you know, making breaking new records, that the workers themselves are not getting a fair shake. >> we reached out to amazon and they tell us the company doesn't expect any impact on its operations. they say in a statement, quote, the truth is that the teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated and attempted to coerce amazon employees and third party drivers to join them, which is illegal and is the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges against the union. >> the name of the game today was fog. blankets of fog covered parts of the bay area today, giving us these really stunning views. it also caused some travel hiccups at bay area airports. both oakland and san francisco had to issue ground delays. in fact, more than 200 flights out of sfo were temporarily held up. and tonight, meteorologist sandhya patel says there is more fog. sandhya already here already? >> dan and as you take a look at

a live picture right now, you can see how murky this view is from our san jose camera. as we look at live doppler seven, the fog has moved in. it is dropping visibility down to half a mile in santa rosa, one mile in concord. look at novato and vacaville three miles. byron two miles. a dense fog advisory has been issued for these areas, shaded in gray until noon tomorrow. hazardous driving is expected with visibility a quarter mile or less, so watch out tomorrow morning for that heavy fog temperatures in the 30s and 40s. give yourself that extra time for the morning commute or your getaway temperatures in the 50s and 60s by noontime, but you're still looking at a mix of sun and fog. it's going to be mild bay and coast and not so much inland, and then cloudier for the evening hours as we check out our rain chances. they're going up late friday night through the weekend into early next week, which of course includes christmas eve. i'll be back with a full look at that forecast coming right up. >> dion all right. watching it closely. sandhya. thanks.

another bridge toll increase is coming today. the bay area toll authority approved a new round of toll hikes that will have most drivers paying more than $10 by 2030 starting january 1st, 2026, tolls go up to $8.50 for most drivers paying with fastrak. then tolls go up $0.50 every year until 2030, when it reaches 1050. the tolls are even higher for those who do not use fastrak 1150 by the year 2030. for drivers who pay by mail, this is for the maintenance, rehabilitation and operation of the bridges. strictly, the one bridge that will be exempt from these increases is the golden gate bridge. that bridge has its own pricing that's set by a different organization. >> the biden administration says california can move forward with its new ban on gasoline powered cars in 2035, but the move could be revoked once donald trump becomes president in january.

but as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains, those worried about the climate are not giving up hope. >> a major move on climate policy wednesday by the biden administration. the epa greenlighting california's plan to ban sales of new gas cars. >> the schedule that's written down right now by california and that other states have chosen to follow, is fairly aggressive, starting with the 2026 model year. >> california is requiring 35% of vehicles sold in the state to be zero emissions by 2035. all cars sold here would have to be electric. >> it's not a fantasy to think that california could reach that goal, because i think a lot can change between here and 2035, but part of that change includes a new administration. >> president elect donald trump promising to revoke california's authority to set its own vehicle pollution controls. >> the move today by the epa makes it slightly harder for the federal administration, under the incoming new administration,

to revoke that waiver. >> it's a move the previous trump administration already tried, but it got caught up in the courts, a scenario that could play out again makes it more likely that any move to roll back the waiver will get caught up in years of legal challenge, and thus the auto industry will sort of proceed as if some of those rules are in place. and that means continued investment in charging stations. just last month, the city of piedmont authorized the conversion of this former shell gas station into an ev charging station. >> i think maybe even if it's a little bit idealistic, it's a good idea. i moved to california from virginia ten years ago for this reason that california is a leader in a lot of these policies. >> i think it's just like implementing it is really hard. and i think there's still like genuine reasons why we need gas powered vehicles and like, they still serve a role in other states. >> i think there's a there's a

jose, as the berryessa school district is set to make a final decision on school closures and consolidation. public comment went on for about three hours and wrapped up just a short time ago. >> for us, majestic way isn't just where we go to school, it's where we've learned what it means to be part of a community. >> i just want you to look around the room and see the damage that's already been done. by just the discussion of consolidation, the board has been weighing several options and is expected to vote tonight in fremont. >> former athletes of mission san jose high school are pushing back against a change in the wrestling room. they tell abc seven news reporter j.r. stone. the school is getting rid of the team's wall of fame. >> it's this wall that's creating quite a bit of controversy at mission san jose high school in fremont. it's the wrestling wall of fame, started around 40 years ago by longtime coach thomas thompson. as of a few weeks ago, the wall is gone.

>> when i heard they took down the wall, it was just it's kind of shocking. uh- 40 years of history. just kind of up in smoke. >> that's former wrestler and coach mike dempsey. he never made it on the wall, but says it was his inspiration when he competed. >> my whole high school career, all you wanted was to get up there. >> that really served as my inspiration and i think everyone after me. it's sort of the same thing. it's what all wrestlers aspire to do is get on that wall. >> kids are like, whoa, who is that? why? how do you get there? what's what is this about? and as soon as they, you know, realize it, like, i want to be there someday. right. it's something to work towards. >> in a statement, school principal amy perez says the memorabilia was taken down due to safety concerns raised by teachers and coaches, going on to say it posed a hazard to students who also play basketball, volleyball and do pe there. >> it's been there for 40 years and there has never been an issue. if it was a safety

capture the moment a tornado touched down in scotts valley on saturday. you can see the wind blowing, trees bending and all the debris flying through the air. we just don't see tornadoes around here. then all of a sudden, something passes in front of the camera and a truck flips over. look at that. we know at least five people were hurt in the tornado, which was rated as an ef1. tonight, the city council officially declared a local state of emergency, and members marveled at how the city responded. >> i just want to i just want everybody to take a moment to sort of appreciate what happened over the weekend, because we talk about what makes scotts valley special place and what we saw in the response of that is what makes scotts valley so special. >> the emergency declaration helps kick start the process to get funding to pay for city repairs. >> governor newsom issued a state of emergency in california over the bird flu. the governor

says he is taking the threat seriously. the declaration gives government agencies extra resources and flexibility to respond to the virus. it's been detected in 16 states, including california. now, it all comes as the cdc confirms the first severe case of the bird flu in the u.s. officials say a person is hospitalized in louisiana after exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks. it's also the first case linked to a backyard flock in the country. the cdc says the immediate risk from bird flu remains low. there are no known cases of person to person spread. >> all right. >> do you remember the so-called murder hornet? according to the washington to washington, u.s. department of agriculture, they have been eradicated from the united states. officials made the announcement today, five years after the invasive species was first discovered in washington state. crews tracked them back to a number of major nests before destroying them. officials say that murder hornets, or the northern giant

hornet, could have posed a significant threat to honey bees and other pollinators in the united states. and another note about nature get this squirrels, of course, are known for hiding and eating acorns, but a new study from uc davis shows they're also carnivores. who knew? it's the first documented study to show squirrels eat small rodents. the squirrels were studied at briones regional park in contra costa county over the summer. nearly half of the observed interactions involve squirrels hunting down voles, small hamster like rodents. >> the numbers of california voles peaked at about seven times the ten year at the ten year average. and so this over overabundance of voles likely provided relatively easily accessible prey for the squirrels, and is probably the reasons for the emergence of this predatory behavior. >> isn't that crazy? experts say squirrels are particularly useful for studying animal resilience to environmental changes because they are active

during the daytime. we can watch them and easy to trap, mark and observe. >> that is fascinating. a group that spent decades providing hot meals to those in need now needs a new place to go to continue their efforts to build a better bay area. but that didn't prevent martha's kitchen from throwing one of their biggest events of the year. today, with santa in attendance. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was also there, seeing the impact firsthand. >> happy holidays. good to see you. >> martha's kitchen in san jose is a community staple, serving more than just hot meals. >> it goes way beyond a soup kitchen, and i think that's been a misconception. >> on wednesday afternoon, volunteers served dinner, one of their busiest indoor dining services of the holiday season. anna contreras has been coming to this location for a meal once a week for the past two years. >> for me, it's a company. good company. nice music, very good food. and don't feel alone.

>> martha's kitchen has been able to provide 2.4 million meals this year. out of their 65 locations that stretch from sunnyvale down to watsonville. they've been at this willow street location in san jose for 45 years. >> sadly, we are looking for a new space because we've really outgrown this parish hall that we operate out of. >> this year, they rescued 900,000 pounds of surplus food from grocery stores or catering companies that would have otherwise gone to the landfill. executive director bill lee said they're seeing more families in need of ready made meals because they're struggling with finances and energy. >> you may have a family where dad is working two full time jobs, and mom's working a full time job, and no one has the energy to actually cook properly and take care of the family. >> sylvia rodriguez has been going to martha's kitchen twice a week for the past 25 years. familia rodriguez says she feels like she's with family. she doesn't feel discriminated. these doors have been open to her and so many others that describe it like a home.

with caution. this fog is going to last through the early afternoon. it all started in the central valley. that's where they have the tule fog, the wind direction, bringing that fog into our area. and that's why parts of the north and the east bay are reporting reduced visibility down to a quarter mile in concord. that's dense fog there. a half a mile in fairfield, three miles. novato, four miles santa rosa. watch out. these are going to be some of the problem spots. so as we take you through time, you can see basically what's going to happen heading into the morning commute. we're going to have some very heavy fog, especially for parts of the north and east bay. so that's just over a mile there, a quarter mile in santa rosa, 5:00 in the morning. fairfield, you see what's happening as we head throughout the day. slowly, we'll start to see some improvement. the fog is still going to hang around in patches around the parts of the delta. temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s. looking at live doppler seven. hey, it is really starting to look like an active pattern. this is what's

setting up for your weekend and beyond. that's what's also kicking up the swells. so beach hazards statement until 6 p.m. tomorrow. current wave heights are 5 to 10ft, breakers 10 to 13 with the risk of sneaker waves and rip currents. definitely be careful at the beaches. a beautiful view from our east bay hills camera overnight dense fog again the next two days. mild and mainly sunny for most of you. and then this weekend it's going to be winter saturday and the wet pattern starts appropriately. so your morning temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s. but half moon bay, that offshore wind is keeping your temperature up. it's 51 tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon you're looking at highs that will range from the low 70s in the southern part of our viewing area to the mid 50s around antioch and fairfield. now, as we look ahead to our rain, saturday is when that rain gets in here. it's not a super soaker or anything. we'll get another round of rain sunday night going into early monday, and then the stronger of the series comes in late monday night into tuesday,
