6:00 am
now abc seven mornings live, and
6:01 am
we need to show jeff bezos and the entire amazon corporation and the rest of the world that our voices matter. >> now, at six, a nationwide strike right before the holidays. and right now, amazon workers walking off the job and joining the picket line. what this could mean for your holiday deliveries. >> president joe biden's final climate push in the paris agreement. his plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade, from vhs to virtual reality. >> jane fonda is still putting in the work. get ready for the high energy workouts returning in a new, modern way. oh my gosh. >> i used to do the jane fonda workouts with my mom. >> so you're really looking. you're like, bring it back. >> now you could do a vr and that turned out great. >> good morning. on this thursday, december 19th. >> i did not do those. i was not fond of sizing. okay. understood. we're doing much better though this morning when it comes to visibility out there. let's take you to san jose. this is one of our cameras. for much of the week
6:02 am
that has been so foggy. it looks dramatically different this morning. we have great visibility in the south bay right now. san jose coming in at 43 degrees. visibility, that number we are watching very closely the past couple of mornings at ten miles. that's as good as it gets when we come to visibility. that dew point, it's in the upper 30s. he may feel a little chill in the air this morning. we do have some areas of fog. it's just not as widespread as the past couple of mornings. so santa rosa, concord having some patchy dense fog this morning. so be aware that traveling highway 4 or 101 in those areas you may be a little bit slower. we do have a dense fog advisory until noon. i wouldn't be surprised if they start chipping this back around the bay shoreline, because we're doing just fine in many cities. so here's future weather. we have that fog around concord, around santa rosa this morning, but the afternoon features lots of sunshine out there and daytime highs feel really pleasant, just like yesterday. we'll get you into the low and mid 60s for daytime highs. let's check in with gloria two drive times this morning.
6:03 am
>> yeah drew's been mentioning the fog. and you know, it's not as bad as it was yesterday. you can see the traffic here on our oakland 880 camera yesterday. some of those cameras you could barely even see because of that thick fog. but here in oakland, traffic is starting to get busier on the southbound side heading into san leandro, you do get a very clear view of the coliseum. no fog in sight there. and when it comes to mass transit, ace train one is running about 40 minutes late. so if you do take ace train one look on their website so you can figure out how to get to your destination on time. bart it also has a ten minute delay. right now there's an equipment problem on the track. this is for the line between san bruno and south san francisco in the antioch and san francisco directions. caltrain is on time. amanda. all right, gloria, thank you. >> happening now, amazon workers in san francisco are hitting the picket line. they're joining workers at several sites across the country who walked off the job overnight after claiming amazon is refusing to negotiate with them. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live at
6:04 am
the warehouse where this picketing is, starting with the demands workers are making. zach. reporter. >> yeah. amanda. they said this picketing here is going to start at 6 a.m. and that is what we are beginning to see right now with workers gathering just outside of this amazon facility. they say that they're upset about wages, benefits and working conditions. the teamsters say that drivers and warehouse workers are going to be the ones walking off the job, not just here in the bay area, but outside of la and also new york, chicago and atlanta. the teamsters claim that amazon is reported is repeatedly refused to recognize the union and negotiate contracts. the union issued a statement that said in part, if your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame amazon's insatiable greed. and one labor attorney says the timing of the strike is definitely not a coincidence. >> one week before christmas and this is the busiest shopping season uh- all year, and this is a strategic time for the amazon workers to flex their muscles
6:05 am
and to say that it is unacceptable that when amazon profits are, you know, making breaking new records, that the workers themselves are not getting a fair shake. >> in a statement, amazon said in part, the teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated and attempted to coerce amazon employees and third party drivers to join them, which is illegal and is the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges against the union. now, the teamsters say it represents nearly 10,000 amazon workers. that accounts for less than 1% of the company's u.s. workforce. so amazon says it does not expect any impact on operations. but again, this picketing here in san francisco is just getting started. this has been happening on the east coast already, so it remains to be seen what the impact will be as the day progresses. but of course, we'll continue to monitor things out here and talk with some of these workers right now. live in san francisco. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> thank you zach. if you thought january's bridge toll
6:06 am
increase to eight bucks would be the last one for a while, think again. the bay area toll authority just approved a new round of toll hikes that will have most drivers paying $10.50 by the year 2030. so here's when and how much you'll be paying. january 1st, 2026 tolls go up to 850 for most drivers, paying with fastrak tolls go up $0.50 every year until 2030, topping out at 1050. the tolls are even higher if you don't use fastrak, so it will be 1150 by 2030 for drivers who pay by mail. and there are also changes for carpoolers starting in 2026, the minimum number of occupants in the carpool lane at bridges goes up to three. that's the same number required at the bay bridge right now. carpool drivers get half off their tolls and use of the diamond lane. the toll authority says revenue will go strictly for maintenance and repair of the seven state, state owned bay area bridges. >> the cost for construction projects have outpaced inflation
6:07 am
generally. so yes, just in the in the last five years, those costs have have increased dramatically. >> commuters we spoke with are not happy, saying it's just another financial burden of living in the bay area. >> some transit agencies are raising their rates in the new year. riding muni will get more expensive. a regular single ride will go up from 250 to 275, and bart is increasing fares 5.5%. that's about $0.25 extra on an average fare. it says that will keep pace with inflation. >> new this morning, in the final days of his administration, president joe biden has announced an ambitious new climate goal to reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions, but will not just be undone when president elect donald trump takes office. gloria. >> well, that's a good question, reggie. the white house formally submitted the new goal to the united nations. today is the requirement for all member nations of the paris agreement to update their emission cut targets every five years. so
6:08 am
this new target aims to cut u.s. climate pollution to 61 to 65% below 2005 levels by 2035. the administration says the goal would put the u.s. on the path to net zero carbon by 2050. biden made climate one of the centerpieces of his presidency, and made the announcement well before its february due date in 2021. the president reentered the paris agreement after president donald trump pulled the u.s. out of the international climate accord. trump has said he will pull the u.s. out of the paris agreement again and reduce or eliminate climate and environmental regulations. now, regardless of what trump does when he takes office, senior biden administration officials say local leaders can continue to drive progress. reggie aqui. >> and along the same lines, gloria. california's plan to fight climate change by banning the sales of new gas cars can move forward. but again, president elect trump might have something to say about that. the environmental protection agency has granted the state authority
6:09 am
to set emission standards that are more strict than federal standards. california's plan calls for 35% of vehicle sales to be emission free by 2026. in 2035, no new gas vehicles could be sold in the state. people we spoke with are conflicted by the policy. >> i think maybe even if it's a little bit idealistic, it's a good idea. i moved to california from virginia ten years ago for this reason that california is a leader in a lot of these policies. >> i think it's just like implementing is really hard. and i think there's still like genuine reasons why we need gas powered vehicles and like, they still serve a role. >> a battle over this rule is sure to continue next year. president elect trump has already said he'll move to revoke all epa waivers granted to california and other states when he takes office. he has criticized allowing states to set their own emissions standards and promoted boosting production of fossil fuels. we dove deep into california's
6:10 am
ambitious zero emission vehicle plan to find out what the state has to do to cross the finish line. see what we found? check out california dreaming the road to zero. it's streaming on our website, abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app. >> the man accused of killing united health care's ceo could appear in a new york city courtroom to face charges as early as today. 26 year old luigi mangione arrived at a pennsylvania courthouse about 90 minutes ago for a hearing that is now underway. he's expected to waive extradition. he faces an 11 count indictment in new york charged with first degree murder in the death of brian thompson. mangione's lawyer has said his client will plead not guilty to the charges. if convicted, mangione faces a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. tonight, watch manhunt. luigi mangione and the ceo murder a special edition of 2020. it's a deep dive into the crime, the manhunt and the legal process now
