>> it was a scene seemingly out of a movie. luigi mangione, the 26 year old man accused of killing unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson, brought to new york to face charges for the early morning murder. welcome back to new york. >> this act of terrorism and the violence that stems from it is something that would not be tolerated in the city. >> arriving in new york city, shackled a slow and very deliberate perp walk for the entire world to see, roughly five miles from the infamous crime scene. >> this show of force seemed to almost be performative in some ways, maybe to show people how serious this case was, and also the fear that i think a lot of law enforcement has that others may take up the mantle of luigi mangione to do similar acts. >> in an unusual display, new york city mayor eric adams and multiple high ranking city officials gathered for the suspects arrival. >> we wanted to personally be here to show the symbolism of

leading from the front of the apprehension. some of these detectives were finally sleep. tonight. >> he will be arraigned today on his indictment for the killing of brian thompson, ceo of united health care, and he'll be arraigned in federal court at the federal courthouse. >> mangione charged with four counts, including stalking, murder and weapons charges. >> that murder charge makes luigi mangione eligible for the death penalty. now, each one of those charges serious in themselves. >> prosecutors quoted entries in a notebook. police said they recovered from mangione's backpack that read like a countdown to murder. one entry reading the target is insurance because it checks every box in october, one and a half months. this investor conference is a true windfall. the complaint says the notebook describes an intent to whack the ceo of one of the insurance companies at its investor conference. mangione did not enter a plea. >> we're going to respectfully

decline to make any comment at this time. but mr. mangione appreciates everyone's support. thank you so much. >> it's the story that has captivated america's attention for the past two weeks. how did this ivy league educated engineer from a wealthy family get so disenchanted that he was allegedly on a street in new york early one wednesday morning, and now being charged with shooting a major corporate ceo, the unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson, shot and killed at point blank range in midtown manhattan early this morning. >> gunned down. police calling it a premeditated pre-planned. the gunman, they say, was waiting. >> all eyes riveted by the week long multi-state manhunt to find the suspect. >> we start with breaking news today on abc news live. the arrest of a person of interest in pennsylvania, and the surprising show of support for the alleged killer. >> he's awoken the people to a true issue. and when the masses come together is when change can really happen. >> oh, my god, did you see? he just walks up and blasted him point blank. i know, i know, it's awesome.

>> oh no, i ain't seen nothing. i ain't seen nothing. matter of fact, i'm blind in my left eye. >> no one would turn on robin hood and nobody's going to turn on the adjuster. >> this is about a lot of people are extraordinarily angry about the way the health care industry is allowed to treat us, and one person went off the deep end and did something about it. >> the story begins on west 54th street in new york city. up to that point, a relatively normal wednesday. mostly cloudy today in the high of 41. >> it will be gusty. >> you see this shooter walking up 54th street wearing a hood that was up. he had a mask on in the vicinity of the hilton shortly before 7 a.m. >> brian thompson, the chief executive of unitedhealthcare, crosses sixth avenue, headed to the hilton hotel for an investor conference. as soon as the suspect sees thompson, he springs from behind a car and aims. >> did you see him come up behind brian thompson about 10

or 12ft away? he fires three times. you see a bystander run out of the frame in the other direction. brian thompson is on the floor. >> a deadly shooting in midtown manhattan. >> police are searching for a suspect that fled the scene. >> a manhunt ensues, with police searching for video from thousands of cameras that blanket new york city. tracking his movements after the crime, riding a bike into central park, leapfrogging over one camera over another, over another. >> they were able to track this guy to this youth hostel on 103rd in amsterdam. so at the youth hostel they find this amazing piece of video. as he's checking into the youth hostel, the lady behind the counter asks him to drop his mask, to see his face, to see his smile and he obliges. and that was the picture that went viral. >> that viral photo fueling an exhaustive search. finally,

investigators get a tip from a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania. >> you have one customer saying to the other, hey, doesn't that guy look like the wanted killer that everybody is searching for? and then the employee at mcdonald's overhears that conversation and calls 911. >> within hours, police would give the mysterious face with the flirtatious smile a name. >> police in altoona, pennsylvania, are questioning 26 year old luigi mangione. >> details uncovered about his life make the story even more intriguing. >> he was the most nice, unassuming kid you've ever met. a lot of really good friends, really athletic, two sport varsity athlete. >> he went to the university of pennsylvania, the engineering school where he majored in computer science. >> his personality was i've never heard anyone say anything negative about him. he was always someone that i like. at the time i looked up to him, you know, and i like i wanted to, to emulate. >> he was telling me about, like, what he's searching for in

hawaii, just just to relax and enjoy his life. and, and i thought to myself, he's going to have a really good life. >> but mengoni's social media posts revealing a darker side, he commented on the unabomber manifesto, and at a certain point, he refers to him in a way that that people have taken as as almost sympathetic. >> we don't know how he went from thinking that the world was broken to taking the action he allegedly took. >> he really just stopped communicating with people. and then two weeks before the shooting, his own mother filed a missing persons report referring to him. in san francisco. >> investigators say mangione's mother later telling the nypd she could envision her son committing this crime. >> they had a conversation where she didn't indicate that it was her son in the photograph, but she said it might be something that she could see him doing. >> mangione's online post revealing his anger had a specific target. >> the nypd intelligence bureau put together a confidential assessment that abc news has obtained. they believe that in

his mind, this was, quote unquote, a symbolic takedown of the health care insurance industry. >> he kind of ruminated on ways in which to carry out this attack on the health care industry. he considered a bomb, but then decided that he didn't want to kill innocents, and so he wanted instead to target an individual. >> he writes, according to authorities, that he wants to take out a ceo at his, quote, bean counter conference defend the vote. >> despite the brazen crime, the 26 year old has become an unlikely hero. in a recent emerson college poll, 41% of u.s. voters between ages 18 and 29 said mangione's actions were acceptable. >> i have never seen a case like this. it has a life and an energy of its own. on social media. >> policeman he come and take luigi far away and the outpouring was instant and intense.

>> welcome back. supermodel petra nemcova survived a devastating tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people. now, 20 years later, she's reflecting on her dramatic survival and her message of hope for others. here's abc's diane sawyer. oh. >> it's the morning after christmas, 2004. families wander onto a beach. no idea of the terror to come. they look up and see a baffling apparition on the horizon, almost like a towering white wall of water. then something may be someone is swallowed up. the wave stop. someone on shore seems frozen in place and it's too late to run.

scream. all around. merciless waves of water hit hundreds of miles of shoreline. in some places at 40 to 50mph. this man sucked under as it barrels into towns, the water's grinding up steel beams, metal roofs, houses, trees, busses and cars float away. the child clings to a tree. and also in is a 25 year old woman. i first met her right after the nightmare. >> it's like sometimes things happen, you know, and it can. they can happen any second. you don't. you can be the most beautiful moment and then the next second. >> her name is petra nemcova,

one of those people who seemed to live a lucky life, a beautiful small town girl from communist czechoslovakia who was discovered and becomes one of the top supermodels in the world on runways, the covers of magazines. she'd also found the man of her dreams, simon atlee, a gifted photographer with piercing blue eyes. they were on vacation in thailand in their bungalow, packing to go home. >> and it was just such a split second. just pulled us out out of the bungalow and we were outside. >> she's hurtling forward, trying to grab onto a floating roof. anything. >> when i grabbed it, i thought i was able to stand up on it, but there was nothing under there was. it was empty. so it pulled. it sucked my legs in. >> the crushing debris slams into her body, breaking her bones.

panicking, you lose more energy and i needed all my energy to keep alive. >> 20 years ago, i flew into that hellscape left by the tsunami. the suffering beyond despair. i remember a little boy standing in the wreckage with his sign, and a two year old boy whose mother had tossed him into a tree to save him. we stopped on the side of the road where a thai family told us they had survived by floating in their car. they lost everything except each other. in all, more than 230,000 people will die, including the man with the piercing blue eyes swept away. when an instant meets an eternity. and then for that agonized young woman holding onto the tree, the sudden miracle of kindness. strangers give her clothes and gently
