tomorrow morning. so today it's a partly sunny day. it will feel cooler out there compared to the past couple of days. daytime highs mainly in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. let's check in with gloria. see how the roads are doing this morning. >> good morning. so we're going to show you our map here of the roads in the bay area. you see a lot of the green this time of the morning very early. so no major incidents. for the most part, though, we do want to point out something that's going on in sonoma. this is on westbound 37 before lakeville highway. there's an overturned vehicle and the left lane is partially blocked. so traffic is backed up to highway 121. we'll let you know when that clears up. and looking livet our bay bridge camera. the upper deck. not crowded at all this morning. metering lights are off, so again, it is early. we'll see how that traffic shapes up throughout the morning. reggie. >> thank you. gloria. this morning we are learning more about the investigation into the deaths of a family found in their milpitas apartment. a mother, father and their two young children were all found with gunshot wounds. this is at the touring apartment complex. and it happened tuesday night. the case now

being investigated as a murder suicide. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has new details about the family's life in the south bay. >> a pile of flowers continues to grow outside the apartment where milpitas police found a family of four dead. investigators identified 36 year old van nguyen and his wife, betty pham. the couple had a nine year old son and a four year old daughter. they were all found tuesday following a welfare check. in an update thursday, police said each family member had one gunshot wound. >> van nguyen, betty's husband and father of their two children, is believed to be our suspect. a handgun, which is legally registered to vin was found at the scene. >> a vta spokesperson confirmed the husband and wife were both employees, according to a medical examiner's report. the couple was going through a divorce when we went to the apartment complex across the street from the great mall, we met gary tropeano, who knows relatives of the family. >> i couldn't believe it. i was just in shock. i was just like,

i was like, it can't be like, it's. it's like i don't really associate something like that bad to happen, like this time of year. so it was like it was really jarring for me. >> police said the couple had no record of domestic violence related calls in milpitas. investigators say finding a motive will take time. >> our detectives are still going through digital evidence and all the evidence that they have to determine if there's any, any notes, any additional evidence that was left from the suspect or any additional information. >> this is so heartbreaking, just like thinking about it. >> topino said his sister lives in the same building and knew betty pham and the two children. >> she's really shocked right now, and even though this is supposed to be a happy, like special time of the year, like it doesn't erase the fact that if you're struggling mentally that uh, you should speak up. >> police said the loss of their lives was preventable and wants the public to know. for anyone experiencing distress. help is available in milpitas. lauren

by dozens of fbi agents and nypd officers. once in court, federal charges of murder, stalking, and weapons violations were read. an attorney for mangione spoke briefly after that hearing. >> we're going to respectfully decline to make any comment at this time. but mr. mangione appreciates everyone's support. >> outside of court. dozens of people gathered in support of mangione, calling for changes in the u.s. health care system. mangione now faces a federal and a state trial, with the state trial expected to go first. he is now being held in a federal prison in brooklyn, reggie aqui. >> gloria. thank you. san francisco state's campus will reopen this morning for finals after an anonymous bomb threat sent to the school into lockdown. students on campus were told to take shelter for hours yesterday as university police conducted a sweep of the buildings, students off campus were told to stay away. all activities and classes were canceled for the entire day. sf state says yesterday's exams

will be rescheduled. police are still investigating the threat. >> new developments with p-g-and-e's. you will soon be paying more for your utility bill. the california public utilities commission unanimously approved a rate increase yesterday. this is the fifth rate hike for the utility this year. p-g-and-e's says it will cover the hundreds of millions of dollars it's going to spend on vegetation management to prevent wildfires. the increases come just days after we learned p-g-and-e's was receiving a $15 million loan from the federal government for infrastructure improvements. the exact increase you will see on your bill is not clear yet, but you can expect to pay more through 2026. >> the san francisco zoo is pushing back on a city commission report that was critical of several of the animal habitats. according to the chronicle, the zoo is looking for a retraction after holding a committee meeting yesterday. the report, released in october, said the zoo is outdated and unsafe for even visitors. the zoo responded

refuting the claims and said the report has hurt their fundraising. the board of supervisors has requested a financial and management audit. >> this morning, millions of people across the country are waking up, packing their bags and getting ready to head out on their holiday trips. the peak window for travel is officially underway. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live at sfo with what you should know before you head out. whether you are flying or driving. good morning zach. >> hey, good morning to you amanda. so yesterday today sunday they are what sfo are calling peak travel days. they are expecting 160,000 travelers to come through on those days.s and again that is just here. san jose mineta is expecting more than 300,000 travelers through january 5th. oakland airport expecting 500,000 through january 6th. and as high as those numbers are for air travelers nationally. triple a is forecasting nearly 90% of travelers are going to be driving to their holiday destinations in near record breaking numbers. >> the busiest air travel days

the 20 year old california man on tuesday. >> i pulled in and they had their guns out all over the street. there's cop cars. there's about 15 cops here, i'd say. well, i'm just glad that they were on top of it. and, you know, they they're going to get to the bottom of it hopefully before something bad happens. >> investigators say the man messaged the wisconsin shooter about his intent to attack a government building with a gun and explosives. the man now has a court hearing scheduled for january 3rd. >> with mass deportations promised by the new trump administration, local nonprofits are raising concerns about a growing waitlist of people in need for immigration representation. abc seven news reporter luz pena went to the largest legal aid organization in san francisco to see what they're facing. >> 11 years ago, this single mom who asked us to blur her face and keep her identity private fled el salvador with tears in her eyes, she recalls gang members threatening to kill her

and her disabled son. i was afraid to lose my life and my son jobina, and that's why i came here. she's now afraid of mass deportations under the new administration, even though she's just one step away from becoming a u.s. citizen. even though i have a green card, i'm still afraid that i could get deported. >> because laws changed. and with this new president, you never know what could happen. >> stories like this one are flooding nonprofits like open door legal, where many attorneys are sounding the alarm months before projected immigration operations. concerned that many won't have legal representation. >> there is a coalition of nonprofits with a waiting list of 1200 people who are in deportation, deportation in immigration court. >> if an undocumented immigrant doesn't have legal representation, are they still required to go in front of an immigration judge?

>> yes, they are required. in fact, if they don't appear before an immigration judge, it's very likely that they will be removed and deported from the country in absentia. an immigrant does not have a legal right of state funded legal representation. >> legal experts are also noticing another concerning factor not enough judges. >> immigration court system in the united states is broken. there are not enough immigration judges to handle the large number of people that are on the backlog. >> bill hing, professor of law and migration studies at the university of san francisco, believes funding now will be imperative to provide funding for representation because right now some people have been waiting for six, seven years for their immigration cases. >> and when people come in at the border who are fleeing violence, they have a right to a hearing for their asylum cases as well. >> in san francisco, luz pena abc seven news.

>> this morning, we're following the growing concern about the bird flu outbreak spreading across california's dairy farms. the governor declared a state of emergency earlier this week. and now we're learning the oakland zoo is taking action to keep their animals safe. the zoo tells us they have an action plan that runs on a scale from 1 to 4, and currently they're operating at a level three. and that means their care plans change. they give birds at the zoo foot baths. update feeding strategies and work to minimize exposure to wild birds. they're also working with the zoos with the association of zoos and aquariums. >> it's lindsay wildlife museum, it's the usda really working international bird rescue, all talking to each other, sharing information on what we're seeing as this outbreak progresses and really ebbs and flows. >> the zoo and other wildlife groups are also working to protect birds beyond zoo borders. they have gone to several sites across the state to vaccinate the endangered california condor. today, we're

tomorrow morning, here's 630. you see some light to moderate showers in the north bay. i think closer to 8:39 a.m. a few of us in the city, the east bay, the peninsula may pick up a drop or two. and that's really about it for saturday. the afternoon is pretty cloudy. we remain dry. then on sunday we'll see another round of light showers very early in the morning. it's sunday night that we'll see some light to moderate rain returning to the forecast. not out of the question. the middle part of the day on sunday we get some sunshine popping out before more rain enters the picture for the end of the day on sunday. so here's 630 with some light to moderate showers moving through, so rainfall totals as we head through the weekend. you can see for a lot of us, less than a half of an inch of rain. we'll watch. areas in the north bay could pick up an inch, but again this is spread out over two days, so this is not going to cause any flooding concerns. the winds remain light. it's just going to be a damp time from time to time over the weekend. but we do have more storms in the forecast. more showers likely monday evening. it's christmas eve on tuesday. i think this is the most impactful storm we

and out right here as people are driving to leave people at the departing gates here. so just leave yourself plenty of time. don't be like me rushing for your flights and you should be fine right now. live at sfo zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> thanks, zach. good reminders there. now, the city of oakland is facing a severe budget crisis, and we're learning more about the how city leaders are making cuts to emergency services. in january, oakland will be temporarily closing two of its 26 fire stations. citywo leaders say the cuts to fire and police departments are necessary to balance the budget, while fire officials worry about the impacts, they are moving forward with plans. >> we're doing some modeling with with our constituents to make sure that we're choosing wisely. there is no firehouse that we can, you know, comfortably lose and have no impact. >> officials say the cuts will be based on how many calls each station receives throughout the year. there are no planned layoffs. firefighters from the closed stations will be moved to

other stations to reduce the amount of overtime work. >> today, about 10,000 starbucks workers will be on a picket line instead of behind the counter. right now, only stores in la, chicago and seattle are participating in the strike. the union says it plans to escalate this over the next five days, unless it can reach a deal with the company. starbucks says the union prematurely ended bargaining this week. starbucks just the latest company to call for a strike this holiday season in san francisco. a group of amazon workers joined a national strike, and hotel workers in the city have been on demonstration for several weeks. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone has more on all of these strikes. >> the spotlight is on three groups of workers who are and have been on strike. amazon workers represented by the teamsters went on strike thursday. at the same time, hilton and hyatt workers have now been on strike for 89 days. but the glimmer of hope comes from marriott workers in san francisco, who reached a tentative deal between both sides on thursday.
