9:00 pm
seven news. a bizarre series of events lead to san francisco police shooting and killing a security guard in union square overnight. you're going to hear from the security guard's brother in a story you'll see only on abc seven. shutdown averted. lawmakers raced to get a deal done before the midnight deadline. it looks like they're going to make it. we'll tell you what's in that spending package all coming up tonight. but right now, let's go back to larry. and after the game. >> thank you dan. we've got the playoff bracket up here as we will go through the games. and we will pick the national champion here because we know because well also they don't trust me with the touch screen. so mike is going to do most of this because they think i'm going to mess it up. but let's
9:01 pm
start with clemson. a three loss clemson clemson team against texas, which made the finals of the sec championship. right. >> so the thing that i find interesting about this game clemson has dabo swinney. dabo swinney has as much experience as a coach in this type of environment in national championships as anybody here, but he doesn't have the team for it. texas has a team that's built for winning national championships. this is the team that they put together with their n.i.l. money with the transfer portal. they've built a really good football team. i think sark has the longhorns geared up to win that first round game. >> okay, i'm with you on the longhorns. i actually prefer arch manning getting some more run in the game than quinn ewers who was their starting quarterback, but we'll see how that works out. and then if they advance to face arizona state let's go tennessee ohio state. so i'm obviously the warm weather guy from hawaii. so i know they're going to play this game at ohio state where it will be like under 30 degrees and the horseshoe in the horseshoe. and so i don't know that, you know,
9:02 pm
warm weather tennessee has much of a chance, although i know you like the running game a little bit, so i do. >> tennessee runs what's called the gap scheme. so you're running counter. you're running power. it's a really it's a tough game if you get it going to stop. plus heupel, josh heupel the head coach loves to throw the ball spread it out so they're tough to stop. ohio state has to get their mental state right. the loss to michigan, where michigan planted the block em at the 50 yard line is a big deal. ryan day, i think is on the hot seat physically. ohio state should win this game. >> yeah, i was going to say the ryan day factor is significant in this one because, you know, there's so much uncertainty. you could have a good record but still. >> oh so you're putting tennessee putting tennessee there i know i know you're putting ohio state in there. >> yeah that's wrong i'll just fix that. but that's that's okay. we'll see what happens in the end. all right. so let's go smu which you saw i did cal went to smu played their loss against penn state. and the controversy with the way this whole thing is set up is people think like this is a walk through because penn
9:03 pm
state, if they win, they'd get boise state out of the mountain west next. and why boise is a three seed is another another conversation. but anyway, what do you think? >> so smu is a very good football team, and smu is going to be a dominant force in college football for years to come. they care about football. they spend money on football. they're going to get all the players they want. they have a great defensive line. they have kevin jennings, a quarterback who's as dynamic as they get at the position. they have a nice running back by the name of burchard, who's really he they converted him from receiver to running back from miami. that said they don't have the discipline yet. at that school. i watched them against cal. they weren't disciplined in that first in that acc championship game against clemson. they weren't disciplined. penn state wins this one with superior talent. i think right now toughness. and this is where your cold weather comes in. it's going to be cold in happy valley up there. and so for them, excuse me, college station, for them to go up there for smu to try to win on the road at dallas team in pennsylvania. and could
9:04 pm
happen. >> as frustrating as it is for you know, these these teams in the first round getting the school environment like we saw today in south bend was incredible. i mean, they definitely got that part of this right. let's go to the quarterfinals, i think. do we both like texas here? >> oh yeah texas is coming out of that. i mean i think the big 12 was not a very good conference this year. arizona state won it. congratulations to kenny dillingham. it's nice to see the pac 12 winning the big ten and the big 12 this year. so that's always good. but yeah texas moves on i think that's big time. that's when quinn ewers really has to show up. absolutely. >> all right oregon against ohio state. and dylan gabriel is the quarterback. he's from the university of well he didn't go to the university of hawaii, but he's from hawaii. in fact, his father was a great quarterback for uh. are we just advancing oregon here? >> i think oregon goes on again. so here's the question though, too. we talked about this rest versus rust. oregon i don't think this is an advantage to get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. i just don't i
9:05 pm
think not playing this round in college with younger players can be a problem. oregon is a better team, so i'm going to move them on. but that's my question. in terms of that game, they are not playing a first round game they're going to get by which a lot of people think, oh, a bye is great. no it's not. i hate byes. i never wanted to have a bye as a player. i just wanted to continue to play straight through. >> okay, this is a heck of a matchup too. in the summer. >> that is that really the national championship right. >> you think so? yeah. all right penn state boise state as much as we love ashton genti you're going we're both going penn state ashton is a really good football player. >> you know he's going to be an nfl guy. but penn state's a better football team period okay. >> this is intriguing because it's not that obvious as to you know which way that's going to go. >> well, so carson beck who's the quarterback for georgia hurts his elbow right. so he misses in this championship game. he's a big time player for him. but he gets injured. and so when he gets injured now all of a sudden they have to go with their backup. gunner stockton right. gunner stockton shows up big time in this game 75%
9:06 pm
passing completes the pass is what he has to. he makes plays. so he's going to have to be the guy. now he got his bell rung in at the end of that championship game as well. georgia's had to go to two overtime games, big time overtime games. they've had to face that. it's not the same georgia team that we thought they were all along. notre dame looks pretty good. i think with their backup. i think notre dame might win that game. >> yeah, i mean the whole offense changes for georgia with the quarterback switch. stockton is more mobile. he can run around. but you know, can you develop a passing game in a couple of weeks just in practice. so i guess we're advancing notre dame yeah move notre dame i think i think just because of that i think notre dame physically matches up with georgia. >> they have dude for dude. but the quarterback situation is big time. >> these are both tremendous semifinal matchups here i think i think we're both going to oregon over texas. is that is that the if oregon gets past this first game because of the rust i think oregon beats texas. all right. so oregon is into the final. defense wins their abc seven sports is projecting the ducks there. how about penn state notre dame that's that's
9:07 pm
that's a game that's in the trash. >> smash mouth football i love what they're doing in terms of their offense at penn state. they give you all these wacky sets. they give you variations you have to look for. they've got tyler warren, a tight end who's a stud who kind of fixes everything. i'm going to go with penn state in that we're going to have the big tent. yeah. all right, you got it. >> i'll drag it all the way over. >> so penn state, it's going to have the big ten championship in the national championship game which we just saw. >> we just saw these two teams play oregon. >> and pac 12 is going to win the national championship. yes. >> yeah. what's left of it. so the penn state oregon game was you score, i score, you score, i score, you score, i score. and it turned out to be 4537 ducks. a rematch of this game could be epic offensively. so who are we taking here? >> oh i like oregon. i think at the end of this thing that oregon ends up winning the national championship, i think phil knight, the oregon ducks dan lanning have built a football team that's going to win this thing. that's my pick
9:08 pm
for national championship. >> okay, we both got it. you want to go score uh- i'm going to say it's 3521 national championship game. defense is going to be 3521. >> it won't be as big as the as the big ten championship game. >> i'm going to go since they were in the 40s, that neither team is going to stop the other one. i'm going to go 4441. >> that would be a great game. yeah. >> and then i'll add an overtime just for, you know what i like. >> not sure. i just think defense when you get to games like this defense is huge. and i think dan lanning is going to find a way to put some defense on the field. >> we'll see. they couldn't do it in the earlier meeting. but that's it. all right oregon ducks you are. >> we've already declared it. >> you are the abc seven sports national champion. yes. we'll come back with more on toyota after the game. nil and transfer portal wreaking havoc on so many college football rosters. we'll talk about that when we come back.

what will you remember most from this victory today? i remember going 98 yards, my boys 98 yards. >> at that moment. we told them this is what we did, the camping trip. this is what we did every saturday walk through. >> it's why we stayed late until 9 p.m. watching film together. >> and so that meant so much to me to go 98 yards against a defense that's been playing great. >> and we ended up scoring in the clutch after hearing the emotion in fernando mendoza's voice. >> after leading a 98 yard drive to beat stanford in the big game. like epic hero kind of stuff. if you told me that kid would put his name in the transfer portal, i would have said, no way. i bet the mortgage on it. bet your mortgage on it too. long story short, cal hired a new offensive coordinator. fernando wasn't totally comfortable with that situation and uncertainty, especially what his fourth offensive coordinator in four years. now, just as a disclaimer, mike, does cal football on the radio. so you're pretty close to what's going on. >> yeah, i'm pretty close to
9:13 pm
both sides of it here. and i think you talk about any relationship, right? what what ruins any relationship? bad communication. and so i think in the midst of it, the communication wasn't there, that both sides were not speaking the same language. they weren't talking about the same things. and so as a result, you have a guy who goes 98 yards with his boys. i was shocked when i heard that he was going in. and i've heard from both sides. and so you can see when you step outside of something, you can see where that happens and where the mistakes are. and here's the thing nil this transfer portal, everything about college football, which we're going to get into in a little bit, people are getting at this thing for the first time with these experiences. you're talking about 20 year old kids with these experiences. you're talking about college head coaches that have had all the leverage that don't understand the other side of it, because this is all new ground. so there's miscommunication. miscommunication leads to misgivings. yeah. >> and this is a system that's like broken before it's even really started. so fernando will likely have some other options that may or may not pay more than cal would pay. but, you
9:14 pm
know, you're just out of quarterbacks in the bowl game. the art of la bowl presented by gronk. did you get to meet gronk? >> i did not get to meet gronk. we were down in newport for a couple of days as you remember from the show. and so yeah sorry about that i was not in gronk's hangouts. >> all right well jack andrews had a game though. yeah c.j. harris 13 of 20 for 109 yards, but only averaged 5.5 yards per pass. ej cameron came on. he was six of 19 three yards per passing average. so obviously the first order of business in the off season for the california golden bears is going to be to figure out their quarterback situation, which is much murkier today than it was a few weeks ago. >> i am all about finding the offensive line first, right? you get yourself a great offensive line and you could go with an average running back and average quarterback. make them pretty good. and so i'm all about spending money in the off season on the offensive line position. and in the meantime, find yourself a quarterback. you just lost a really good quarterback in fernando mendoza. so now you've got to find somebody to replace that. but get the big boys up front, get them blocking, getting get them doing
9:15 pm
their job and on the same page. and that will make everything else go a lot better. >> offensive line has been a problem for several years in berkeley. so let's do a deep dive on the state of college football. we'll start with the money. nil. for those of you who don't know, that's name, image and likeness. and the money plus the portal has dramatically changed the game and not necessarily for the better. it's better for some student athletes, not necessarily all. >> so name, image and likeness has nothing to do with name, image and likeness now. and so these kids are getting paid to play. they're not getting paid to do endorsements. they're not getting paid for anything else. and so it became a facade. but here's the thing i am entirely for players making as much money as possible. okay? the ncaa for years has been a monopoly. as a monopoly. they've been making money off of the players efforts, off of the players sweat, off the players blood. these players have been getting injured on the field and they have nothing to show for it. and they say, oh well, you get your scholarship. when i played at cal, my scholarship averaged about $0.84 an hour. that's what it was worth as a player at cal in terms of all the time i put
9:16 pm
in. meanwhile, the ncaa was making money, the institutions and again, athletic departments aren't always making money, but football is definitely making money. so i'm all for the players making money. the issue is what you don't have is any stability. you have free agency twice a year. i wrote my thesis on antitrust versus labor law when i was at cal, so i know the whole situation of this. if you do anything to because they've shown there's a market. now, if you do anything to disrupt that market, it's an antitrust issue. and so now if you get teams colluding together, it's an antitrust issue. you need to come up with some kind of contract situation where players are locked into contracts. and then at that point there's some kind of sanction from schools, but they still have to be able to test the market for their marketability. they have to be able to have a match or right to first refusal within these contracts, so that you are not now limiting a player's ability to make money. >> i mean, in an ideal situation, you would have a governing body that is functional, but we don't have that. we have the ncaa. >> the ncaa was a monopoly and then it blew up. and now they're
9:17 pm
powerless. >> yeah, they go to court and lose and go to court and lose and go to court and lose. >> so and the coaches and the and the institutions are now like they said what i don't care. >> right. all right. so the rich get richer is the way the system is set up and the poor are going to get poorer. nil combined with transfer portal nil would be one thing. and you know, schools would pay for guys. but the fact that players can hopscotch around the country just at will like this, that combination has made it really hard for coaches and players because there's no enforceable contract. >> so a player, there was a player who came out of the east bay, signed with a team in the sec, supposedly picked up checks, and then immediately transferred to another school and signed with them, picked up checks and then transferred to a third school. and so you have these contracts. there's no contract to hold people, and then they won't go enforce any contract that they have anyway, because then it looks bad to the next recruit. you have to have
9:18 pm
enforceable contracts. you have to have something that gives you stability with your players. and even if it's under contract, i have the right to first refusal. if somebody offers, you say they want larry biel as their quarterback. that would be wise. yeah. and somebody paid you $3 million and they've offered you know somebody comes and offers you 5 million as a school as an institute i can say no, i think you're that important to my university. you're that important to my team. i'm going to match that offer. you have to stay. so now you're not limiting anybody's ability to earn, but you're making a decision on what it means to your team, and you're keeping some continuity if you want it. >> i love that scenario. by the way, the three or the 5 million i've seen you throw, you're not going to get 5 million. well, but i got a quarterback coach sitting right next to single threat guy. >> that's what i'm saying. >> ouch. anyway, is this fixable in the short term? >> no, but it's going to it's going to figure a way out. and it always does. it'll find a way. and i think long term what's going to happen. you're going to have x number of schools probably in the 40 to 60 range. they're going to be run
9:19 pm
by the networks. they're going to be loosely affiliated with the schools themselves. and so you're going to have universities and institutions that are okay with using their name, with teams, which can then not forego, but the academics won't be as important. and so you'll have teams where academics don't tie in as much to the team on the field, but it'll be run by the networks and that tv right in the way that they can market that. and then all the streaming, like there's so much money in it, that's the way it has to go. >> well, if you look at the way teams and people have moved around the country, i mean, it's i mean, it's just mayhem on on a daily basis. >> the crowd demands it, the viewers want it. >> well, they want to see good football. so it's just confusing. yeah. and you don't have any brand loyalty. guys are here. they're there. you don't know. anyway, one thing we do know this is this is for sure san jose state is going to play south florida in the hawaii bowl on christmas eve. the spartans star receiver nick nash, he opted out of this game because he doesn't want to risk injury. so he's getting ready for the draft. obviously you don't want
9:20 pm
to get hurt in a they call that a business decision? yeah, it was a business decision. so the spartans flew to hawaii yesterday. the game is a homecoming for head coach ken niumatalolo and offensive coordinator craig stutzmann. the spartans enjoying some aquarobics, i believe, as they take over waikiki beach. here's coach ken on coming home. >> you're always trying to win whatever wherever you play at, but being home is super special. we got guys on our staff, coaches and players that are from hawaii, so it's always good for us to come back, but it's definitely exciting to come home. >> we have so many coaches from from this type of, you know, area, and i think it's really important, you know, that come away with number eight because, you know, we've had some trouble in the past with this, this type of scenario. so yeah, i think this is a big one for the police. >> they have a significant number, in fact polynesian players. i mean years ago it wasn't a thing. and then people started recruiting samoa and tonga. and you have first, second and third generation players now families. and so
9:21 pm
they're a significant force, no doubt about it. >> and some of the best players in the game too, and some of the greatest teammates you could ever find. a lot of my poly teammates were fantastic teammates and they are incredible football players as well. >> absolutely and highly sought after, much in demand. more to come on toyota after the game. what would you consider to be the ultimate gift if you were an offensive lineman, let's say for the 40 niners? think about that for a second.
