starts right now. >> he did more than just play ball and break records for a club. i think he definitely embraced culture. he focused on oakland. >> there was nobody more quintessentially oakland than rickey henderson, one of oakland's true icons is gone. >> baseball legend rickey henderson has passed away, and there is profound sadness around the bay area and the baseball world over his unexpected death. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. henderson's wife, pamela, confirmed in a family statement that the hall of famer died at ucsf. she says rickey lived his life with integrity, and his love for baseball was paramount.

now rickey is at peace with the lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind. he's been a fixture in baseball since he made his debut in the major leagues with the a's in 1979. henderson was one of the greatest all around players ever, but his best known for his ability on the base paths. he is the all time stolen base leader, setting the record for bases stolen in a season, swiping 130in 1982, just his second full season in the majors. then he set the career record a decade later. >> but today, i am the greatest of all time. thank you. >> henderson stayed heavily involved in the world of baseball after his retirement, remaining a presence at spring training and having the a's coliseum field named after him in 2017. henderson was 65 and would have been 66 on christmas day. abc seven news reporter

quintessentially oakland than rickey henderson. >> howard bryant is an espn writer. he also penned a book on henderson's life. >> rickey grew up in oakland. rickey went to oakland. rickey played for the oakland a's, calling the legendary leadoff hitter and base stealer a true giant. there are very few people in this sport that you can look at in any sport, in any industry, where you can say, were you one of the top 5 or 10 people to ever do what you did as an occupation? and he's one of the few people on earth who can say that. >> and his passing made particularly painful as the a's exit oakland. >> and for rickey to pass two months after the a's leave town permanently. there's just something very poignant and very bittersweet and sad about that. >> and that loss felt by these fans. >> now, the fact that the a's are leaving, that also brings up the fact that the a's were our childhood. we grew up with that. it's a loss. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> now, the a's released this

statement saying rickey was undoubtedly the most legendary player in oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of a's fans over his 14 seasons. wearing the green and gold. fellow bash brother jose canseco, who played with henderson during the glory years of 89 to 92, sent this message out on x, saying in part, i'll never forget all the incredible moments we created together. memories i'll never forget. rest easy my friend. and san francisco giants legend barry bonds shared this message on facebook, saying i'm so glad we were able to see each other recently and laugh about old times. we'll have much more on the life and career of rickey henderson and reaction from those who knew him coming up throughout this newscast. new developments now striking union employees at the hyatt hotel in san francisco say they've reached a tentative agreement. if the contract is approved, it would end a three month strike and bring hundreds of people back to work for the busy

holidays. nearly 650 workers remain on strike at the hilton nearby in union square. the agreement voted on today is the same agreement ratified by marriott union workers on thursday. the terms include wage increases, along with new protections against understaffing and workload increases. all right, shifting gears now. taking a look at the damp weather conditions we've been experiencing the last few days, and we are about to get more. francis is standing by with a little bit more on this wet pattern. francis. >> yeah, we are going to get quite a bit of rain, especially next week. it's going to be a wet and windy one. here's a look at live doppler seven satellite radar image. so we are seeing some light showers. a lot of drizzle falling around parts of the bay area, including the peninsula san mateo county coastline. so the level storm one continues through tomorrow. we'll see some showers overnight. we'll get a break during the day and then some. rain returns in the north bay first starting in the afternoon to evening and then spreads

southward. there's also some rough and dangerous surf through tomorrow. so here is your day planner for tomorrow. by 7:00 tomorrow morning it will be mostly dry. so if you have those last minute errands to do, it will be nice and dry through the afternoon hours for most folks, except rain will return to the north bay in the afternoon. temperatures will be on the milder side. we'll see mid 70s for inland areas and around the bay at the coast. low 60s, but then moderate rain returns in the evening and i'll let you know how that plays out. and i'll have the rain totals for you coming up in my next report. dion. >> all right. the rain certainly didn't stop shoppers because it is the final weekend to shop before christmas, and stores across the bay area are busy. check it out. this is the crowd ie the great mall in milpitas this evening. while outside the mall parking lot got backed up for parts of the day because of all of those shoppers, a drive-thru turkey donation drive in san francisco today brought a big

bringing turkey, one turkey, two turkeys to the to the san anthony. >> it's now a community wide effort benefiting the san francisco marin food bank. so far, hundreds of turkeys have been donated and lots of hams. and it comes at a time where the need has never been greater. >> we're currently serving about 50,000 households every week. these turkeys and hams will go to some of our agency partners, who are putting on christmas lunches and dinners. >> it's a critical time for most bay area food banks responding to food insecurity. 1 in 6 people in santa clara and san mateo are getting help from second harvest of silicon valley. that agency is feeding a half million people every month in napa. demand for food assistance has tripled compared to this time last year, and the north bay's redwood empire food bank is serving thousands more families just in the past five months. >> our number one concern is inflation. so we purchased some of the food that we distribute, and it is costing us two times what it did pre-pandemic.

giants shared this statement, calling henderson one of the greatest players of the game. the team wrote. a true bay area legend, rickey's larger thanrea life personality and love for the game made him a beloved figure across the baseball world. our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go to rickey's family, his friends, his teammates, and all whose lives he touched. well, in other news, as the port of oakland seeks to expand the oakland airport. two lawsuits were filed this week seeking to block it. the main claim is that the plan put forward by the port failed to meet environmental standards. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has more on the lawsuit. >> the oakland airport is looking to expand its first major expansion projects since it was built in the 1960s, but two lawsuits are seeking to block it. >> by doing this, additional gates and increased airport traffic, these communities will be getting additional pollution

in an area that are already overburdened by pollution. >> doctor paul english is a scientist who is part of the stop okay expansion coalition, which filed a lawsuit against the port of oakland. the port owns and operates the oakland airport. the main claim that the airport's final environmental impact report, or eir, does not meet the standards of the california environmental quality act, also known as sequa. one issue that the port conducted a health risk assessment as part of the eir. the coalition wants a health impact assessment. the argument is that the health impact assessment focuses on inequities in ways the other data doesn't. of the predominantly low income neighborhoods that the lawsuit claims, which already suffer health effects from the current airport operations. >> when you look at the data, answer these east oakland zip codes. they have rates of emergency visits for asthma that are three times the state average, copd rates that are twice the state average, and heart attacks, which are 45%

higher than the state average. >> the expansion project includes constructing new terminal facilities that meet new environmental standards, and to meet the increase in passenger and cargo demand projected over the next two decades. the port's final eir was certified in november. the port of oakland declined an interview request, but in a statement to abc seven news, it counters by saying, quote. the eir is a product of years of careful study, community outreach, and careful deliberation. >> ceqa exists precisely for situations like this, which is to prevent the government and developers from trading community health without disclosing those impacts for the sake of profit. >> sarah chen is an attorney with communities for a better environment, which filed a separate second lawsuit on thursday. one of the claims that the expansion project is not fully defined. another violation of ceqa, for example. they claim there is almost no analysis of what could be a doubling of fossil fuel storage and distribution at the airport.

>> and this instead is, you know, providing a potentially changeable uh- plan, saying up to 16 gates, up to this many gates, decommissioning very vague definitions of things, which leaves the door open for, you know, the port to make decisions in the dark anser hasc seven news. >> all right, francis, joining us once again talking about our wet weather pattern. we have a little bit of a you could call it a christmas gift. >> yes we will. that's our mainly dry day for the next seven days. here's a look at live doppler seven. still some light rain and some drizzle around the bay area. we're going to continue to get some showers and light rain overnight. also, we're seeing quite a bit of fog out there that has reduced visibility to one mile in san francisco, and only a one and one fourth mile in novato, less than three miles in concord and also in santa rosa. temperatures right now, generally in the 50s. san rafael cooler at 50. san francisco 54, but really mild. still in san jose at 58 degrees. and

here's a live shot, as you can see, of sfo and what you can expect. so we're going to see early showers continue tomorrow. and then we get a break. and then some rain in the afternoon and evening. tuesday is when a stronger system arrives bringing us some gusty rain even with a chance of thunderstorms and christmas. that is the present that diane was talking about. it's actually going to be dry, but it will be cloudy and cool. we might even get some partly sunny conditions on wednesday. so here's a forecast animation notice by 6:00 tomorrow morning it's going to be cloudy, but that system has moved through dry for most of the day. and then 6:00 in the evening the rain arrives. more moderate rainfall, mainly in the north bay, so still dry south of the golden gate bridge for the most part until 6:00. and then as the system slides southeast, it kind of peters out. and so we have very little rainfall

south of the golden gate bridge, less than a quarter of an inch in some places, not even a 10th of an inch. but north of the golden gate bridge, we could see anywhere from a quarter of an inch all the way up to an inch in some of the higher elevations for some of the north bay mountains. overnight lows will be in the 50s for the most part. then tomorrow temperatures will be a little bit warmer, some upper 60s even expected in san jose. right around the bay. we'll see low to mid 60s. cooler in the north bay, santa rosa and napa only at 60 degrees. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have a level one system tomorrow and monday, but then that gustier system with the chance of thunderstorms, christmas eve looking dry for christmas and the start of hanukkah before more wet weather. right now, a level one thursday, friday and saturday. >> look, we don't see any threes, fours, fives. yes, t will be just fine. >> yeah, we can handle it. yeah. >> all right. francis. thanks. well, still ahead tonight on abc seven news at 11, an event that

brought out generous south bay residents and car enthusiasts. santa clara county supervisor betty duong helped arrange this event in san jose. the hundreds of toys collected will go to the children's advocacy center of santa clara county. that's the agency that helps children who are survivors of abuse and neglect. >> the child advocacy center gave out their last toy on thursday night to a child that was brought in. so these are these are supplies that are desperately needed. and the great thing is that if you miss us today, the child advocacy center will receive toys and donations all year round. >> lending a big hand was the overland car community and bay area car clubs. car owners helped host the event, showing off 100 of their souped up rides

it's a sad day in the bay. baseball hall of famer outfielder and oakland a's legend rickey henderson died at the age of 65 friday night. henderson is major league baseball's greatest leadoff man and base stealer in history. the oakland native shattered the stolen base record with 1406 swipes. he's the only player to steal 130 bases in a single season. he redefined baseball's leadoff position, becoming the all time leader in leadoff home runs with 81. he won two world series titles, won an mvp, and appeared in ten all star games. he's a gold glove winner and a three time silver slugger award winner. after the warriors game in minnesota, another bay area legend, stephen curry, offered

right now, the city of oakland is showing its love for one of its most beloved natives. >> tributes are popping up around the city as news of rickey henderson's death spreads. henderson's wife confirmed his death after much speculation over his health over the last 24 hours. abc7 news sports director larry beil has a look back at the life of one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of the bay area. >> i'm the greatest of all time. >> rickey henderson is still the all time stolen base leader, the greatest leadoff hitter ever as well. perhaps the greatest baseball player ever to come from oakland. rickey henderson was born on christmas day, 1958, in chicago and moved to oakland when he was just a toddler. a three sport athlete at oakland

technical high school, rickey turned down football scholarships to sign with his hometown oakland a's back in 1976 and made his major league debut just three years later. and he literally was off and running. in 1980, his first full season in the majors, he broke the american league record for stolen bases, which was set by ty cobb. and in 1982, rickey stole 130 bases, still the all time record. in the mid 80s, henderson was traded to the new york yankees. he led the american league in stolen bases every year of the 80s, except for one when he had a down year and seattle's harold reynolds had 60 stolen bases in 1987, and years later, reynolds remembered the phone call that he received after the season was over from rickey henderson. >> man, you ought to be ashamed. i go, what are you talking about? he said, 60 stolen bases. you ought to be ashamed. rickey has 60 at the break. click. >> henderson was given a hero's welcome in his return to oakland in mid-season 1989, and he helped the a's to the second of

three pennants and their last world series championship in oakland. the earthquake delayed bay bridge series over the giants. henderson won his only mvp award in 1990. in 91, he stole his 939th base, breaking the all time record that was held by lou brock, leading to one of the greatest sound bites of all time. >> but today, i am the greatest of all time. thank you. >> rickey's career went far beyond just speed. he's still the all time leader for most leadoff home runs, as well as most runs scored, in addition to the stolen base crown. in retirement, rickey was a presence at spring training, and the a's renamed the coliseum field after him in 2017. in the a's final few weeks at the coliseum on rickey henderson bobblehead day, his daughter adriana threw out the first pitch to him, and in the final game in oakland, the ball used to make the last out made its way to henderson, a fact that surprised nobody. rickey's last

public appearance came in the a's final game ever. he appeared in a split jersey of the a's and mariners and threw out the first pitch. it's a very sad coincidence with the season that saw the end of the oakland a's, there is now no more rickey henderson. gone too soon. less than a week before his 66th birthday. >> the city of oakland will soon have 24 new police officers. they join a force struggling with staffing and a city struggling to pay millions in police overtime. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the latest. who are we? >> what are 4-1-1 is this? >> it was a proud moment for these new police academy graduates, and an important moment for the city of oakland as it gets 24 new police officers, you will learn to use discretion, and not everyone needs to or has to go to jail or receive a ticket. >> in many situations, discretion is the better part of valor. >> this is the first academy to

graduate under police chief floyd mitchell's watch. officer nathaniel larson was the academy's valedictorian. he says he knows the city of oakland faces challenges, but that's all the more reason to come to oakland. >> for me, i want to be able to give the most or give back to a community that may need the most help. so i'm up for every challenge there is, and i want to be able to be a good officer and be able to give back to a great community. >> interim mayor nikki fortunato bass spoke, highlighting the diversity of this academy. i want to ask the women of this academy to please stand up so that we can appreciate what. one of them was, miah williams, who grew up in richmond. >> it's a tough city, but it's full of people who are tough, people who love the city, people who want to see it be better, do better. and when i chose to become a police officer, i knew exactly where i wanted to be, and that was oakland. >> but these graduates come into a department that is struggling with staffing, and a city that is struggling to pay the millions in overtime. new budget cuts passed this week include reducing police overtime

spending by $25 million. for the past few weeks, the mayor has been meeting weekly with the police chief to monitor spending. >> i'll be joining the meeting on monday, and i want oaklanders to know that there's going to be a focus on ensuring officers are out on patrol, and they're also out on investigations, and so that means we are making sure our resources are going into responding and solving crimes. >> anser hassan abc7 news a police standoff with a burglary suspect ended peacefully in san francisco's mission district this morning. >> officers responded to a report of a burglary on harrison street near 20th at nine this morning. there they encountered the suspect, who appeared to be suffering from a mental health emergency. hostage negotiators were called to help bring the situation to a peaceful end. the suspect was taken into custody a few hours later. a possible government shutdown has been avoided after the senate approved the deal just after the midnight deadline. president

biden then signed the bill this morning. the deal means millions of government employees won't have to go without pay over the holidays. here's abc news reporter christiane cordero, with details now from washington. >> the short term government funding bill was signed by president joe biden saturday morning, lawmakers sending it to his desk following some last minute negotiations to reach a deal. the legislation funds the government until mid-march of next year, provides $100 billion in disaster relief and 30 billion in economic assistance for struggling american farmers, but it does not include a last minute demand from trump to raise the debt ceiling, which is the limit on how much the federal government can borrow. >> on this vote, the yeas are 85, the nays are 11. the 60 vote threshold having been achieved, the bill is passed. >> earlier friday, the house overwhelmingly passed the legislation. it was a third attempt by house speaker mike johnson to fund the government after president elect donald trump and billionaire elon musk tanked his first bipartisan

bill, and republicans plan b failed on the floor thursday. johnson, speaking with trump and musk before the vote. the billionaire, who previously called johnson's first funding plan a crime and threatened to primary republicans who voted for it. now posting overnight, the speaker did a good job. but 34 republicans voted against the measure. democrats only getting behind the bill after republicans stripped that last minute request from the president elect. >> this is a victory for the american people. we have successfully advanced the needs of everyday americans. but there are still things to be worked on, and we look forward to that fight in the new year. >> the passage of this funding bill marks the end of the 118th congress. lawmakers now leaving for the holidays, and will return on january 3rd, when the 119th congress will be sworn in. christiane cordero, abc news, washington. >> in the east bay, a group of

community members fed up with piles of trash thrown onto the side of the road, are banding together to do something about it. they've been working on grizzly peak road in the hills above berkeley. i spoke with volunteers who are building a better bay area by taking matters into their own hands. >> we've got wine glasses, we've got food containers, we've got all sorts of marijuana products. >> nestled 1700 feet above sea level, grizzly peak is one of the highest points in the berkeley hills, usually offering picturesque views of the bay. but along this stretch of road, john kirkham describes it as a landfill. >> we're standing in the middle of probably one of the worst illegal dumping sites up here on grizzly peak boulevard. it's probably about 100 yards long, maybe 30 yards wide, a couple yards deep and trash the trash, spoiling this three mile stretch between centennial drive and claremont avenue is what inspired kirkham, a former attorney, to start the volunteer group playfully named the east bay trash pandas. we've been doing this work for about 14

was the best baseball player many know, but that is nothing in comparison to the brother he is to me. well, beware if you're visiting the beach this week, large swells are hitting the coast of monterey, santa cruz, and san mateo counties today through monday. beaches can expect surf between 10 and 20ft high, but may double in size in some exposed coastline areas. a second, larger swell will build on monday. state park officials warn people to use caution near the ocean by staying off rocks and low lying areas. i was at the pier not long ago near half moon bay and people were, oh my gosh, lined up taking pictures, some of us getting splashed. so i see the allure. >> yeah, it's impressive, but it is going to make for some dangerous conditions in areas like mavericks can see up to 30ft. wow. yeah. and then after the high surf advisory we'll probably get a high surf warning. and that will change after tomorrow. that expires at 4 p.m. so live doppler seven right now

showing you some light scattered showers over parts of the bay area along the peninsula coastline and parts of the south bay, and will continue to see those showers overnight. it's a level storm one. it's a light storm on our exclusive storm impact scale. after the showers, we'll get a break before rain returns in the afternoon to evening, mainly starting off in the north bay. and again, we have rough and dangerous surf through tomorrow. so that high surf advisory until 4 p.m. so dangerous conditions right now. wave heights are 16ft in bodega bay and point arena, 13ft in san francisco, seven feet in monterey bay. so just be careful if you're heading out there to check out those cool looking waves. so the futurecast shows by 6:00 tomorrow, those showers have ended, will be under cloudy conditions, and then it does return in the evening, 6:00 at night. you'll see mainly rain in the north bay. some heavier rain in the areas of orange and red there, but still fairly dry south of

the golden gate bridge and in the east bay. looking pretty good. and then rainfall amounts will generally be only a 10th of an inch or a quarter of an inch south of the golden gate bridge, but then could be more in the north bay. lows tonight will be in the 50s. 53 in san francisco. oakland, 56, in san jose. highs tomorrow it's going to be a little bit milder. we could see some breaks in some of the cloud cover at times. so in san francisco and oakland 63 once again san jose 68. but in the north bay, santa rosa, napa only 60. so it will be milder but still on the cool side. so the futurecast shows even on monday, we'll see some spotty showers throughout the day. and then this system, our next one comes late monday night, so most of monday also fairly dry. but this is the stronger system. tuesday christmas eve we will wake up to gusty conditions, winds up to 45mph. there is also a slight chance of thunderstorms, but then by tuesday afternoon looks like we will be drying out into christmas day. and here's

it's a sad day in the bay. baseball hall of famer outfielder and oakland a's legend rickey henderson died at the age of 65 friday night. henderson is major league baseball's greatest leadoff man and base stealer in history. the oakland native shattered the stolen base record with 1406 swipes. he's the only player to steal 130 bases in a single season. he redefined baseball's leadoff position, becoming the all time leader in leadoff home runs with 81. henderson won the american league stolen base title every year of the 1980s except 1987, when he had a down year, and seattle's harold reynolds. he led the league with 60 a few years ago on the dan patrick show, reynolds told a great rickey story of the call he got after the season was over. >> so i win the stolen base title, and rickey got hurt that year. he had like 30. it's the only time in the 80s you can google it. all right. i get home, season ends, phone rings.
