in just a moment. but first, lisa is tracking more rain in the forecast. yeah. >> did you use your wipers this morning? oh, i sure did. yeah. so there is a line of showers out there and it is light in spots. but we'll take you in closer. and you notice as we get towards the east bay, you've got some rain out towards livermore and hayward, san leandro, dublin, pleasanton. it's wet 680 and the altamont pass there also down along the peninsula, a little band of rain, san francisco, south city, half moon bay into woodside. there's less in the north bay, but it's still drizzly and there is fog. visibility certainly has been reduced in the past couple of days. it was not a good looking day yesterday. half mile at the coast, 3 to 6 miles. san francisco and oakland, level one system with morning showers and the rain becomes steadier tonight and we'll look for that dangerous surf and high surf advisory to turn into a high surf warning by 4:00 this afternoon so you can see the cloud cover there. the rain does move out by mid-morning and we're left with mild temperatures. look at the low to

mid 60s arriving by noontime. it's a lot of cloud cover. and then by 6 p.m, the rain starts again in santa rosa. and this is going to be a heavier system that takes us into parts of the evening hours. we'll detail that for you in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right. lisa. thank you. rickey henderson, the greatest athletic of all time. the baseball trailblazer was the oakland a's all time leader in runs scored, walks and stolen bases. henderson's wife, pamela, confirmed in a statement the hall of famer died at ucsf. she says, quote, rickey lived his life with integrity and his love for baseball was paramount. now rickey is at peace with the lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind. henderson has been a pioneer in baseball since he made his debut in the major leagues with the a's in 1979. now, he was considered one of the greatest all around players, but is best known for ability on the base paths. he's the all time stolen

base leader, setting the record for bases stolen in a season, swiping 130 back in 1982. that was his second full season in the majors. then he set the career record a decade later. >> but today, i am the greatest of all time. thank you. >> henderson stayed involved in the world of baseball after his retirement. he would show up to spring training, and there's also an a's coliseum field named after him. henderson was 65, and he would have been 66 on christmas day. abc seven news reporter tara campbell tells us more about his impact on the city of oakland. >> he was an amazing, amazing soul. you know, to so many of us. >> inside this oakland sports bar, the news is tough to take. major league baseball legend and oakland a's icon rickey henderson passing away friday, just days away from his 66th

birthday. >> honestly, it hit me tremendously hard. not just because he passed, because of the timing of the passing is just unreal. >> his absence felt across an entire city. henderson's name marking baseball fields. and on these walls, his face forged into history. >> i think he did more than just play ball and break records for a club. i think he definitely embraced culture. he focused on oakland. >> there was nobody more quintessentially oakland than rickey henderson. >> howard bryant is an espn writer. he also penned a book on henderson's life. >> rickey grew up in oakland. rickey went to oakland. >> rickey played for the oakland a's, calling the legendary leadoff hitter and base stealer a true giant. >> there are very few people in this sport that you can look at in any sport, in any industry where you can say, were you one of the top 5 or 10 people to

ever do what you did as an occupation? and he's one of the few people on earth who can say that. >> and his passing made particularly painful as the a's exit oakland, and for rickey to pass two months after the a's leave town permanently. >> there's just something very poignant and very bittersweet and sad about that. >> and that loss felt by these fans. >> now, the fact that the a's are leaving, that also brings up the fact that the a's were our childhood. we grew up with that. it's a loss. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the a's released the following statement, saying in part, quote, rickey was undoubtedly the most legendary player in oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of a's fans over his 14 seasons wearing the green and gold. his fellow bash brother, jose canseco, played with henderson during their glory years of 1989 to 1992, and canseco sent this message on x,

saying in part, i'll never forget all the incredible memories we created together. memories i'll never forget. rest easy, my friend. and san francisco giants legend barry bonds shared this message on facebook. he wrote i'm so glad we were able to see each other recently and laugh about old times. the san francisco giants organization is also reacting to henderson's death. it released a statement calling henderson one of the greatest players of the game. then went on to say, quote, a true bay area legend, rickey's larger than life personality and love for the game made him a beloved figure across the baseball world. our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go to rickey's family, his friends, his teammates, and all those whose lives he touched. now, we've told you before, the port of oakland is looking to expand the oakland airport, but two lawsuits filed last week are trying to block that expansion. the group against the plans claims the port failed to meet

environmental standards. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to those involved in this lawsuit. >> the oakland airport is looking to expand its first major expansion project since it was built in the 1960s, but two lawsuits are seeking to block it. >> by doing this, additional gates and increased airport traffic, these communities will be getting additional pollution in an area that are already overburdened by pollution. >> doctor paul english is a scientist who is part of the stop okay expansion coalition, which filed a lawsuit against the port of oakland. the port owns and operates the oakland airport. the main claim that the airport's final environmental impact report, or eir, does not meet the standards of the california environmental quality act, also known as sequa. one issue that the port conducted a health risk assessment as part of the eir. the coalition wants a health impact assessment. the argument is that the health

impact assessment focuses on inequities in ways the other data does not. of the predominantly low income neighborhoods that the lawsuit claims, which already suffer health effects from the current airport operations. >> when you look at the data, answer these east oakland zip codes. they have rates of emergency visits for asthma that are three times the state average, copd rates that are twice the state average, and heart attacks, which are 45% higher than the state average. >> the expansion project includes constructing new terminal facilities that meet new environmental standards, and to meet the increase in passenger and cargo demand projected over the next two decades. the port's final eir was certified in november. the port of oakland declined an interview request, but in a statement to abc seven news, it counters by saying, quote, the eir is a product of years of careful study, community outreach, and careful deliberation. >> sequa exists precisely for situations like this, which is to prevent the government and

developers from trading community health without disclosing those impacts for the sake of profit. >> sarah chen is an attorney with communities for a better environment, which filed a separate second lawsuit on thursday. one of the claims that the expansion project is not fully defined. another violation of sequa. for example, they claim there is almost no analysis of what could be a doubling of fossil fuel storage and distribution at the airport. >> and this instead is, you know, providing a potentially changeable uh- plan, saying up to 16 gates, up to this many gates, decommissioning very vague definitions of things, which leaves the door open for, you know, the port to make decisions in the dark later. >> in oakland, anser hassan abc seven news. >> new developments this morning. union employees at the hyatt hotel here in san francisco unanimously approved a new union contract. the vote ends a three month strike and brings hundreds back to work for

the busy holiday season. unite here local two negotiated a tentative contract with hyatt hotels corporation before ratifying that vote yesterday. the agreement is the same agreement ratified by marriott union workers on thursday. the terms include wage increases along with new protections against understaffing and workload increases. nearly 650 workers remain on strike at the hilton hotel nearby in union square. all right, let's get you outside. good morning. >> lisa. hi there. >> steph, as we look outside, kind of an eerie view, right? with the fog from our exploratorium camera. we spun that around and we have rain. what else is new, right? with well over 100% of average.or like 117. in san francisco, it is 53 a mile, 57 in the south bay. morning showers and then we'll get into some steadier rain tonight. but the bulk of the day not fantastic, but at least we won't see the rain. in fact, we won't see sun. we'll see more clouds. details coming

investigated for potential finance violations. the complaint was filed during kristina corp's 2022 campaign. state election regulators are looking into local contributions allegedly going significantly over the set limit. the complaint also reported the campaign failed to disclose spending on social media ads and banners. the announcement of the investigation comes shortly after county supervisors decided to schedule a special election to give them the ability to remove corpus from office over allegations of abuse of power. that election is set for march in the east bay. now, a group of community members, fed up with piles of trash thrown onto the

side of the road, are coming together now to take action about it. they've been working on grizzly peak road in the hills right above berkeley. abc seven news anchor dion lim talked with volunteers who are building a better bay area. >> we've got wine glasses, we've got food containers, we've got all sorts of marijuana products nestled 1700 feet above sea level. >> grizzly peak is one of the highest points in the berkeley hills, usually offering picturesque views of the bay. but along this stretch of road, john kirkham describes it as a landfill. >> we're standing in the middle of probably one of the worst illegal dumping sites up here on grizzly peak boulevard. it's probably about 100 yards long, maybe 30 yards wide, a couple yards deep and trash the trash, spoiling this three mile stretch between centennial drive and claremont avenue is what inspired kirkham, a former attorney, to start the volunteer group playfully named the east bay trash pandas. we've been doing this work for about 14

months and picked up over 20 tons of trash in that time. >> since the group was formed, upwards of 70 volunteers have attended each cleanup event. >> this is 100% a team effort. we had people, you know, elbow deep, shoulder deep into the poison oak yesterday picking up old bottles. >> but after so many successful bi weekly and monthly events, kirkham is fed up over what he calls inaction by those who actually own the land. >> we want to put pressure on the landowners. you know, uc berkeley, this is your property. you're tasked with cleaning this area up. you've got to do the work. >> he says after more than 40 emails and calls to uc berkeley and area lawmakers asking for accountability for the trash, the litter keeps piling up. >> we show that it can actually be done. if volunteers can do it, uc berkeley can do it. >> while he'll continue to lead these cleanup efforts, he's hoping for one thing i would love to put up put our crew out of business. >> that's the number one goal. no more east bay trash pandas. fantastic. >> dion lim, abc seven news. >> a drive thru turkey donation drive in san francisco brought a

bringing turkey, one turkey, two turkeys to the to the san anthony. >> it's now a community wide effort benefiting the san francisco marin food bank. so far, hundreds of turkeys have been donated and lots of hams. and it comes at a time where the need has never been greater. >> we're currently serving about 50,000 households every week. these turkeys and hams will go to some of our agency partners, who are putting on christmas lunches and dinners. >> it's a critical time for most bay area food banks responding to food insecurity. 1 in 6 people in santa clara and san mateo are getting help from second harvest of silicon valley. that agency is feeding a half million people every month in napa. demand for food assistance has tripled compared to this time last year, and the north bay's redwood empire food bank is serving thousands more families just in the past five months. >> our number one concern is inflation. so we purchase some of the food that we distribute, and it is costing us two times what it did pre-pandemic. >> that's why this food drive is

so important. >> it's hard. and everybody don't have what you have or vice versa. >> as a show of thanks everyone. donating got a nice round of applause from volunteers in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> meanwhile, a heartwarming toy collection drive brought out generous south bay residents and car enthusiasts. santa clara county supervisor betty duong helped arrange this event here in san jose. the hundreds of toys collected will go to the children's advocacy center of santa clara county. that's the agency helping children who are survivors, that is of abuse and neglect. >> the child advocacy center gave out their last toy on thursday night to a child that was brought in. so these are these are supplies that are desperately needed. and the great thing is that if you miss us today, the child advocacy center will receive toys and donations all year round, lending a big hand was the overland car community and bay area car clubs.

>> car owners helped host this event, showing off their souped up rides to highlight this community effort. great to see that. well, beware if you're visiting the beach this week. large swells are hitting the coast of monterey, santa cruz, and san mateo counties. until tomorrow. beaches can expect surf between 10 and 20ft high, but that could even double in certain areas. a second, larger swell will build on monday. state parks officials warn people to use caution near the ocean by staying off rocks and low lying areas. now, this comes as we brace for even more rain. it was certainly hard to get a break from it yesterday. >> yeah, you know, it's been so sloppy out there today. this line of rain should shut off by the mid morning hours. so although we're not going to see bright blue sky we will have the cloud cover. and then another steadier line of rain moving in later on tonight. and then of course there's more after that. but we are looking at the activity right now on live doppler seven. so periodic light

rainfall through the mid morning hours. and as you be taking closer, you'll notice that right from the east bay through the peninsula, there's that line right there. still some light drizzle up in the north bay, but the main activity is here and we are looking at that rain from pleasanton over towards 680 this morning. good morning to you. 580 as well. stanley boulevard pleasanton and livermore. and taking you further south, you notice it's a wet morning in milpitas down through sunnyvale and mountain view. highway 82 there and back westward kind of shuts off parts of the peninsula, but down through the santa cruz mountains, looking pretty wet there. and then to the north, there's still drizzle out there. there's low visibility and fog. so take it easy. and as stephanie talked about the high surf advisory, we are looking at this to not only strengthen but become extremely dangerous. so the high surf advisory replaced with a warning by 4:00. so 20 to 26 foot swells. and then we're going to

get into about 40ft as we go through the rest of the overnight hours and into monday. so this is the kind of situation where the roads will be blocked off. you won't even be able to get near the coast, certainly around half moon bay. morning showers, rain in the afternoon with that dangerous surf and current numbers are quite mild. we will definitely make it into the 60s today. already upper 50s san jose 51, in sonoma. so notice this is not picking up on that low level moisture. but it does move on out. and as we get into sunday afternoon we're left with a lot of cloud cover. and this is the next system. by 730 it's raining in the north bay pushing through the city. and so it's a narrow line of showers. but as we get a break for the most part on monday. but this is what we're tracking monday night into christmas eve. so a lot of activity from the early morning hours. it starts at about 3 a.m. and then by 730 in the morning we've got some very heavy rain, but look how quickly it shuts

off through noontime. so taking you through the rainfall totals today, 11:00, anywhere from a couple hundreds to 2/10 for most of us except santa rosa. then we get that heavier rain into monday and tuesday, and we're looking at a half inch to an inch and upwards of two inches to the north bay there. so as we get into christmas and hanukkah, that's our dry day. cloudy 50s. and we'll see conditions. pretty nice after that system moves through into christmas eve and dries us out through christmas day. so we're looking at low 60s today with the cloud cover, oakland mid and upper 60s for the south bay, a level one system throughout the afternoon. the morning hours i should say. then late tonight. then we get into it late monday into early tuesday with that level two system dry for the middle of the week, the holiday and then more showers at the end of the week. we'll be right back. >> the abc seven storm impact scale. today's storm is level one. that means light rain, so

welcome back. addressing homelessness and protecting our environment are both parts of building a better bay area and in the south bay, an outreach effort is underway to help relocate people living near waterways. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us the first steps taken by the city of san jose is preparing to relocate 1000 homeless people living along creeks and rivers. >> on tuesday, mayor matt mehan joined an outreach team off coyote creek to see, after the recent rains, the amount of plastic and metals, the shopping carts, the trash. mehan said the city has about 147 miles of

waterways right now. they're concentrating on 12 miles that are most impacted by the homeless. the city has started counting how many people are there in preparation for next year, when encampments along waterways will be cleared. >> this count was later in the day as people were awake, going out tent by tent, talking to people and actually having them fill out a survey and individually surveying every single human being. >> the city approved an unprecedented $27 million investment for this cleanup effort. mehan said the funds will help add over 1000 safe and managed places for people to stay. >> they come in different forms. this is safe parking and safe sleeping. prefabricated modular units, converted motels. most of the units will be rooms with a door that locks path. >> santa clara county is a statewide agency helping the city and valley water gather in accurate head count. >> athletes with services and not enforcement. >> regional director tamara chavez says her team has the

abc seven mornings live now at 530. >> a wet start to the week. here's a look at live doppler seven. the green is the rain moving through the bay area as we speak. it's going to be another wet week ahead too. >> yeah, you know, we're getting some breaks and it will be periodic light rain. but there is a heavier system monday night into tuesday. and as we look at live doppler seven right now, you'll notice that the trajectory of this is to sink to the south. and we are looking at the showers sliding out of town for really the bulk of the day. so we're moving this east of 680 right now and 880 out of milpitas. but the south bay still damp from santa clara to cupertino and san jose, north bay, just a little sprinkle activity and the fog. yeah, that's certainly has been an issue. half mile, half moon bay, two miles out towards the east

bay. and a little better than that in vacaville. so as the rain chances decrease throughout the day, we are cloudy and then they increase from 6:00 in the north bay through the evening hours. it's not a big system, but we're keeping it a level one through this morning and this evening. so the morning showers and the evening rain cloud cover and mild temperatures today, upper 50s to those mid 60s throughout the day. and then a second line of rain. stephanie. all right. >> lisa. thank you. the city of oakland is showing its love for one of its most beloved natives. tributes like this one you're seeing on your screen are popping up around the city as people learn about rickey henderson's death. henderson's wife confirmed his death after much speculation about his health. abc seven sports director larry beil has a look back at the life of one of the greatest athletics to ever come out of the bay area. >> i'm the greatest of all time. >> rickey henderson is still the all time stolen base leader, the

greatest leadoff hitter ever as well. perhaps the greatest baseball player ever to come from oakland. rickey henderson was born on christmas day, 1958, in chicago and moved to oakland when he was just a toddler. a three sport athlete at oakland technical high school, rickey turned down football scholarships to sign with his hometown oakland a's back in 1976 and made his major league debut just three years later. and he literally was off and running in 1980, his first full season in the majors, he broke the american league record for stolen bases, which was set by ty cobb. and in 1982, rickey stole 130 bases, still the all time record. in the mid 80s, henderson was traded to the new york yankees. he led the american league in stolen bases every year of the 80s, except for one when he had a down year and seattle's harold reynolds had 60 stolen bases in 1987, and years later, reynolds remembered the phone call that he received after the season was over from rickey henderson. >> man, you ought to be ashamed. i go, what are you talking

about? he said, 60 stolen bases. you ought to be ashamed. rickey has 60 at the break. click. >> henderson was given a hero's welcome in his return to oakland in mid-season 1989, and he helped the a's to the second of three pennants and their last world series championship in oakland. the earthquake delayed bay bridge series over the giants. henderson won his only mvp award in 1990 and 91. he stole his 939th base, breaking the all time record that was held by lou brock, leading to one of the greatest sound bites of all time. >> but today, i am the greatest of all time. thank you. >> rickey's career went far beyond just speed. he's still the all time leader for most leadoff home runs, as well as most runs scored, in addition to the stolen base crown. in retirement, rickey was a presence at spring training, and the a's renamed the coliseum field after him in 2017. in the a's final few weeks at the

coliseum on rickey henderson bobblehead day, his daughter adriana threw out the first pitch to him, and in the final game in oakland, the ball used to make the last out made its way to henderson, a fact that surprised nobody. rickey's last public appearance came in the a's final game ever. he appeared in a split jersey of the a's and mariners and threw out the first pitch. it's a very sad coincidence with the season that saw the end of the oakland a's, there is now no more rickey henderson gone too soon. less than a week before his 66th birthday. >> former a's teammate and childhood friend dave stewart tweeted this i can't explain what someone who was present in every memory childhood to today means to me, or what it means to cope with having no more tomorrows alongside him. rickey henderson was the best baseball player many know, but that is nothing in comparison to the brother he is to me. powerful words there. he will surely be missed and forever remembered

the yard. >> liberty mutual sent her this inspection report stating she was dropped because of a debris hazard around her property, but all it said was not on her roof. the company never specified where the image only included a red arrow pointing to the side of her house. >> then they said, oh, that that arrow wasn't supposed to specify an area. >> she says the company could never tell her what area they were referring to. they just sent her this email for the non-renewal decision remains. so she appealed by sending even more pictures of all areas around her house showing no visible debris. a second chance catherine did not even get. >> i think they really were just looking for any excuse to get rid of me. >> we reached out to liberty mutual regarding these two cases, and the company told us they would reach out to both olivia and catherine to address this, and we've actually since heard from both of them that their issues have been rectified and their policies have been renewed with liberty mutual. so

around the bay, but it is winding down. we get a bit of a break before a line of showers moves in later on this evening. still level one system and you can see how all that moisture is pushed into the east bay, the south bay. we get in a little bit closer right now, and it has exited livermore and milpitas down around san jose, mount hamilton, the santa cruz mountains picking up on some rainfall here. and as we get towards campbell, a little drizzly there and also along the coast. so that is very weak when you notice up to the north, still some shower activity from saint helena, santa rosa. so the high surf advisory continues through 4:00. this goes to a high surf warning, and we are

looking at breakers anywhere from 20 to 26ft. so dangerous conditions. these have doubled since yesterday. and then as we get into later on tonight and monday, we're talking 35 foot waves. even 40 are possible. so that's why we'll have the warning through tuesday after this afternoon. and it is going to be very dangerous out there along the coastline. we will get a break in the rain from time to time. so it's not steady rain, which is the good news. we do need the break, especially up in the north bay. morning showers, they are ending and then we get some rain in the evening and that dangerous surf continues. temperatures are mild from the low 50s. sonoma and napa, 57, in hayward and san jose with 53. san francisco so easily reaching those 60s today, the hour by hour forecast shows us pretty cloudy throughout the day today. maybe a few peeks of some sun trying to get through this afternoon. then as we get through about the six 7:00 hour, here comes that band of rain.

it's not particularly heavy, but it is steady and we will see some downpours push on through rather quickly. so that brings us more rain tonight. our level one system, then just a few areas of light showers into monday. this is monday evening, but it's the overnight hours. we're looking at that level two system and that takes us into christmas eve. so look at all the rain here. we're talking the possibility of thunderstorms, some very gusty winds and rainfall that could potentially bring some flooding up in the north bay. good news, good news. we get a break after that for those creeks and streams to reside in the north bay. this is today's system with anywhere from a 10th to about 2/10. but then you'll notice what happens in santa rosa. you get more rain. and this is the system that takes us into christmas eve, up to about an inch for the wettest locations, and maybe two inches to the north. here's our break on wednesday. hanukkah arrives 50 to 55 cloudy conditions that sun setting before 5:00. and then here comes the heavy rain overnight monday
