give way to a lot of cloud cover, maybe even a few peeks of sun. so there's a look at that progressive line of light showers. we're into los gatos now, just south of mountain view and the santa cruz mountains. and then as we head to the north, still some drizzle up in the north bay. there is fog and the roadways certainly wet out there. two and a half mile visibility for you in san jose. half a mile. half moon bay. so look at what's happening in the next few hours. the rain chances diminish and then they pick up again after 6:00 in the north bay. so the level one with the morning showers, the rain in the evening, dangerous surf and then a lot of cloud cover and very mild temperatures for your sunday 930 we're in the upper 50s in the south bay and east bay. look at noontime 60 downtown and by the later afternoon as the rain heads into the north bay, we've had highs in the upper 60s, so heavier rain to come. stephanie monday night into tuesday, a level two. we'll talk about it and track it for you in a few minutes. >> all right lisa, thank you. rickey henderson, the greatest

athletic of all time. the baseball trailblazer was the oakland a's all time leader in runs scored, walks and stolen bases. henderson's wife, pamela, confirmed in a statement the hall of famer died at ucsf. she says rickey lived his life with integrity and his love for baseball was paramount. now, rickey is at peace with the lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind. henderson has been a pioneer in baseball since he made his debut in the major leagues with the a's back in 1979. he was considered one of the greatest all around players, but is best known for his ability on the base paths. he's the all time stolen base leader, setting the record for bases stolen in a season, swiping 130 back in 1982. and that was only his second full season in the majors. then he set the career record a decade later. >> but today, i am the greatest

of all time. thank you. >> henderson stayed involved in the world of baseball after his retirement. he would show up to spring training, and there's also an a's coliseum field named after him. henderson was 65. he would have been 66 on christmas day. abc seven news reporter tara campbell tells us more about his impact on the city of oakland. >> he was an amazing, amazing soul. you know, to so many of us. >> inside this oakland sports bar, the news is tough to take. major league baseball legend and oakland a's icon rickey henderson passing away friday, just days away from his 66th birthday. >> honestly, it hit me tremendously hard, not just because he passed, because of the timing of the passing is just unreal. >> his absence felt across an

entire city. henderson's name marking baseball fields. and on these walls, his face forged into history. >> i think he did more than just play ball and break records for a club. i think he definitely embraced culture. he focused on oakland. >> there was nobody more quintessentially oakland than rickey henderson. >> howard bryant is an espn writer. he also penned a book on henderson's life. >> rickey grew up in oakland. rickey went to oakland tech. rickey played for the oakland a's, calling the legendary leadoff hitter and base stealer a true giant. there are very few people in this sport that you can look at in any sport, in any industry, where you can say, were you one of the top 5 or 10 people to ever do what you did as an occupation? and he's one of the few people on earth who can say that. >> and his passing made particularly painful as the a's exit oakland, and for rickey to pass two months after the a's leave town permanently. >> there's just something very

poignant and very bittersweet and sad about that. >> and that loss felt by these fans. >> now, the fact that the a's are leaving, that also brings up the fact that the a's were our childhood. we grew up with that. it's a loss. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the a's released the following statement, saying in part, quote, rickey was undoubtedly the most legendary player in oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of a's fans over his 14 seasons wearing the green and gold. his fellow bash brother, jose canseco, played with henderson during their glory years of 1989 to 1992, and canseco sent this message on x, saying in part, i'll never forget all the incredible memories we created together, memories i'll never forget. rest easy, my friend. and san francisco giants legend barry bonds shared this message on facebook, saying, i'm so glad we were able to see each other

recently and laugh about old times. the san francisco giants organization is also reacting to henderson's death. it released a statement calling henderson one of the greatest players of the game, then went on to say, quote, a true bay area legend. rickey's larger than life personality and love for the game made him a beloved figure across the baseball world. our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go to rickey's family, his friends, his teammates, and all those whose lives he touched. we've told you before, the port of oakland is looking to expand the oakland airport, but two lawsuits filed last week are trying to block that expansion. the group against the plans claims the port fails to meet environmental standards. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to those involved in this lawsuit. >> the oakland airport is looking to expand its first major expansion projects since it was built in the 1960s, but two lawsuits are seeking to block it.

>> by doing this, additional gates and increased airport traffic, these communities will be getting additional pollution in an area that are already overburdened by pollution. >> doctor paul english is a scientist who is part of the stop okay expansion coalition, which filed a lawsuit against the port of oakland. the port owns and operates the oakland airport. the main claim that the airport's final environmental impact report, or eir, does not meet the standards of the california environmental quality act, also known as sequa. one issue that the port conducted a health risk assessment as part of the eir. the coalition wants a health impact assessment. the argument is that the health impact assessment focuses on inequities in ways the other data doesn't. of the predominantly low income neighborhoods that the lawsuit claims, which already suffer health effects from the current airport operations. >> when you look at the data, answer these east oakland zip codes. they have rates of

emergency visits for asthma that are three times the state average, copd rates that are twice the state average, and heart attacks, which are 45% higher than the state average. >> the expansion project includes constructing new terminal facilities that meet new environmental standards, and to meet the increase in passenger and cargo demand projected over the next two decades. the port's final eir was certified in november. the port of oakland declined an interview request, but in a statement to abc seven news, it counters by saying, quote, the eir is a product of years of careful study, community outreach, and careful deliberation. >> ceqa exists precisely for situations like this, which is to prevent the government and developers from trading community health without disclosing those impacts for the sake of profit. >> sarah chen is an attorney with communities for a better environment, which filed a separate second lawsuit on thursday. one of the claims that the expansion project is not fully defined. another violation

of ceqa, for example. they claim there is almost no analysis of what could be a doubling of fossil fuel storage and distribution at the airport. >> and this instead is, you know, providing a potentially changeable uh- plan, saying up to 16 gates, up to this many gates, decommissioning very vague definitions of things, which leaves the door open for, you know, the port to make decisions in the dark later. >> in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> we're following new developments. union employees at the hyatt hotel here in san francisco unanimously approved a new union contract. the vote ends a three month strike and brings hundreds of people back to work for the busy holiday season. unite here local two negotiated a tentative contract with hyatt hotels corporation before ratifying the vote yesterday. the agreement is the same agreement ratified by marriott union workers on thursday. the terms include wage increases, along with new

auditorium camera. rain is moving out of the bay area, but more is coming back tonight. lisa will have the latest on that. the san mateo county sheriff's campaign is being investigated for potential finance violations. the complaint was filed during kristina corp's 2022 campaign. state election regulators are looking into local contributions allegedly going significantly over the set limit. the complaint also reported the campaign failed to disclose spending on social media ads and banners. the announcement of the investigation comes shortly after county supervisors decided to schedule a special election to give them the ability to remove corpus from office after allegations of abuse of power. that election is set for march. well, there's nothing worse than driving through your own neighborhood, seeing the side of the road filled with trash. well, this community here in the east bay joined forces to change

that. they've been working on grizzly peak road in the hills above berkeley. abc7 news anchor dion lim talked with this group, working to build a better bay area. >> we've got wine glasses, we've got food containers, we've got all sorts of marijuana products nestled 1700 feet above sea level. >> grizzly peak is one of the highest points in the berkeley hills, usually offering picturesque views of the bay. but along this stretch of road, john kirkham describes it as a landfill. >> we're standing in the middle of probably one of the worst illegal dumping sites up here on grizzly peak boulevard. it's probably about 100 yards long, maybe 30 yards wide, a couple yards deep and trash the trash, spoiling this three mile stretch between centennial drive and claremont avenue is what inspired kirkham, a former attorney, to start the volunteer group playfully named the east bay trash pandas. we've been doing this work for about 14 months and picked up over 20 tons of trash in that time since the group was formed.

>> upwards of 70 volunteers have attended each cleanup event. >> this is 100% a team effort. we had people, you know, elbow deep, shoulder deep into the poison oak yesterday picking up old bottles. >> but after so many successful bi weekly and monthly events, kirkham is fed up over what he calls inaction by those who actually own the land. >> we want to put pressure on the landowners, you know, uc berkeley, this is your property. you're tasked with cleaning this area up. you've got to do the work. >> he says after more than 40 emails and calls to uc berkeley and area lawmakers asking for accountability for the trash, the litter keeps piling up. >> we show that it can actually be done. if volunteers can do it, uc berkeley can do it. >> while he'll continue to lead these cleanup efforts, he's hoping for one thing i would love to put up put our crew out of business. >> that's the number one goal. no more east bay trash pandas. fantastic. >> dion lim, abc seven news. >> a drive thru turkey donation drive in san francisco brought a huge response from the community. the event benefits

anthony. >> it's now a community wide effort benefiting the san francisco marin food bank. so far, hundreds of turkeys have been donated and lots of hams. and it comes at a time where the need has never been greater. >> we're currently serving about 50,000 households every week. these turkeys and hams will go to some of our agency partners, who are putting on christmas lunches and dinners. >> it's a critical time for most bay area food banks responding to food insecurity. 1 in 6 people in santa clara and san mateo are getting help from second harvest of silicon valley. that agency is feeding a half million people every month in napa. demand for food assistance has tripled compared to this time last year, and the north bay's redwood empire food bank is serving thousands more families just in the past five months. >> our number one concern is inflation. so we purchase some of the food that we distribute, and it is costing us two times what it did pre-pandemic. >> that's why this food drive is so important. >> it's hard. and everybody

don't have what you have or vice versa. >> as a show of thanks everyone. donating got a nice round of applause from volunteers in san francisco. cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> great to see that. well, this is also heartwarming. at toy collection drive brought out generous south bay residents and some car enthusiasts to santa clara. county supervisor betty duong helped arrange this event right in san jose. hundreds of toys collected will go to the children's advocacy center of santa clara county. that's the agency helping children who are survivors of abuse and neglect. >> the child advocacy center gave out their last toy on thursday night to a child that was brought in. so these are these are supplies that are desperately needed. and the great thing is that if you miss us today, the child advocacy center will receive toys and donations all year round. >> lending a big hand was the overland car community and bay area car clubs. car owners helped host this event, showing off their souped up rides. to

highlight this community effort. all right. take a look. it's the final weekend to shop before christmas and hanukkah, and stores across the bay area are busy. if you're shopping, you've experienced it. and this is the crowd inside the great mall in milpitas last night. while outside, you see here the mall parking lot got backed up for parts of the day because so many shoppers were out and about. well, here's a warning for you this morning beware if you're visiting the beach this week, large swells are hitting the coast of monterey, santa cruz, and san mateo counties. until tomorrow. beaches can expect surf between 10 and 20ft high, but that could even double in certain areas. a second, larger swell will build tomorrow. state parks officials warn people to use caution near the ocean by staying off rocks and low lying areas. now this comes as we brace for more rain. it was certainly hard to get a break from it yesterday, and lisa is tracking the very latest. this

system is moving out, you said, but more on the way. >> that's right. a smaller one tonight to bring in another shot of rain. i want to pick up on the high surf advisory that you were talking about. yeah. this goes to a warning later on this afternoon. and really, san mateo doing a great job of just closing off that whole area to the coast. so if you think you're going to see the waves now, think again. it is super dangerous out there. and we're talking mavericks at perhaps 40ft as we get into that high surf warning late uh- later on today, right on through tuesday. here's a look at that system that is heading out of town. it's still wet in parts of the south bay and the far east bay, but certainly moving through. and we even have a little bit of sunshine on the way today. do you believe that? let's go in closer to around milpitas, where things have really slid to the east and south of 680 and 880. and here we are in san jose, where you can see that 280 is a little bit on the wet side. further south, morgan hill and san martin, you have the wet

weather and then back along the coast, the santa cruz mountains. you can see this front just draped around monterey and big sur and then moving on out. so the high surf advisory stays with us to 4:00. these were nine footers yesterday. now we're at 13 to 14ft. goes to a high surf warning 4 p.m. to tuesday noontime. we're talking 30 to 36 foot waves. could easily see 40ft at around mavericks. so already 20 to 26. our forecasted throughout the day today. so yeah the coast is really going to be off limits. really dangerous there. this is what we get with these big swells and storms up to the pacific northwest this time of year. so morning showers ending, rain arriving tonight. it moves through again. and we've got a pretty dry looking monday on the way before monday night gets pretty active. 58 in oakland, 54 in fremont. it's mild out there, hour by hour. notice the cloud cover here at about 930 10:00. wants to thin out so we could see a few peeks of sun. then we

thicken the clouds 4 or 5:00 and here comes the next band of rain. it's a level one system. by 830 it's raining everywhere. few downpours in the north bay. and then as we look at about 11:00, it's exiting the east bay and we're left with a few showers throughout the day on monday. this is monday morning. you can see them passing through monday afternoon and then overnight monday into early tuesday. this is the level two system that will could bring some flooding problems up in the north bay. beneficial rain for the east bay. rainfall amounts throughout today. anywhere for a couple hundredths to a third of an inch through 11:00. we get more in the north bay then we're adding on monday night into tuesday, upwards of two inches in the north bay, a third of an inch in the south bay. so this is our other break. it's on hanukkah where we will be dry a few peeks of sun, christmas day, those downpours ending on christmas eve allowing for that break. middle of the week 60s today. look how mild and that

and protecting our environment are both parts of building a better bay area and in the south bay, an outreach effort is underway to help relocate people living near waterways. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us the first steps being taken. >> the city of san jose is preparing to relocate 1000 homeless people living along creeks and rivers. on tuesday, mayor matt mehan joined an outreach team off coyote creek to see after the recent rains, the amount of plastic and metals, the shopping carts, the trash. mehan said the city has about 147 miles of waterways right now. they're concentrating on 12 miles that are most impacted by the homeless. the city has started counting how many people are there in

preparation for next year, when encampments along waterways will be cleared. >> this count was later in the day as people were awake, going out tent by tent, talking to people and actually having them fill out a survey and individually surveying every single human being. >> the city approved an unprecedented $27 million investment for this cleanup effort. mehan said the funds will help add over 1000 safe and managed places for people to stay. >> they come in different forms. this is safe parking and safe sleeping. prefabricated modular units, converted motels. most of the units will be rooms with a door that locks path. >> santa clara county is a statewide agency helping the city and valley water gather inaccurate head count. >> athletes with services and not enforcement. >> regional director tamara chavez says her team has the expertise to build trust with people and connect them to the right support. >> it might be hygiene kits, it might be food, it will be water. it might be pet food for their

look at the temperatures. look at the breaks in the clouds low to mid 60s by 1130. and then as we get towards the 1:00 hour, we're in the upper 60s with some sun in the south bay, low 60s in oakland. the clouds increase again, and then by the late afternoon hours, we're tracking rain from santa rosa sweeping to the south and east. it's a rainy evening, and we'll talk about a stronger storm behind this one coming up. steph. >> all right, lisa. thank you. the city of oakland is showing its love for one of its most beloved natives. tributes like this one on your screen are popping up around the city as people learn about rickey henderson's death. henderson's wife confirmed his death after much speculation about his health. abc seven sports director larry beil has a look back at the life of one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of the bay area. >> i'm the greatest of all time. >> rickey henderson is still the all time stolen base leader, the greatest leadoff hitter ever as

well. perhaps the greatest baseball player ever to come from oakland. rickey henderson was born on christmas day, 1958, in chicago and moved to oakland when he was just a toddler. a three sport athlete at oakland technical high school, rickey turned down football scholarships to sign with his hometown oakland a's back in 1976 and made his major league debut just three years later. and he literally was off and running. in 1980, his first full season in the majors, he broke the american league record for stolen bases, which was set by ty cobb. and in 1982, rickey stole 130 bases, still the all time record. in the mid 80s, henderson was traded to the new york yankees. he led the american league in stolen bases every year of the 80s, except for one when he had a down year and seattle's harold reynolds had 60 stolen bases in 1987. and years later, reynolds remembered the phone call that he received after the season was over from rickey henderson. >> man, you ought to be ashamed. i go, what are you talking about? he said, 60 stolen bases.

you ought to be ashamed. rickey has 60 at the break. click. >> henderson was given a hero's welcome in his return to oakland in mid-season 1989, and he helped the a's to the second of three pennants and their last world series championship in oakland. the earthquake delayed bay bridge series over the giants. henderson won his only mvp award in 1990. in 91, he stole his 939th base, breaking the all time record that was held by lou brock, leading to one of the greatest sound bites of all time. >> but today, i am the greatest of all time. thank you. >> rickey's career went far beyond just speed. he's still the all time leader for most leadoff home runs, as well as most runs scored, in addition to the stolen base crown. in retirement, rickey was a presence at spring training, and the a's renamed the coliseum field after him in 2017. in the a's final few weeks at the coliseum on rickey henderson

bobblehead day, his daughter adriana threw out the first pitch to him, and in the final game in oakland, the ball used to make the last out made its way to henderson, a fact that surprised nobody. rickey's last public appearance came in the a's final game ever. he appeared in a split jersey of the a's and mariners and threw out the first pitch. it's a very sad coincidence with the season that saw the end of the oakland a's, there is now no more rickey henderson gone too soon. less than a week before his 66th birthday. >> former a's teammate and childhood friend dave stewart tweeted i can't explain what someone who is present in every memory childhood to today means to me, or what it means to cope with having no more tomorrows alongside him. rickey henderson was the best ballplayer many know, but that is nothing in comparison to the brother he is to me. powerful words there. rickey, of course, will be missed and forever remembered here in the bay area. you can

read more about henderson's life and baseball career over on our website, abc7 news.com. well, new data is showing that california's population is finally increasing. according to numbers from the census bureau and the california department of finance, it's due to a single demographic. immigrants from abroad are making up for a large part of the surge. the state's population decreased for the first time in 2020 to 2021. factors, of course, included people moving out of the state and declining birth rate. states seeing the most growth are florida and texas. turning to a live look at the white house this morning, as we told you yesterday, president joe biden signed a short term government funding bill avoiding a government shutdown. congress passed the bill following late night negotiations, and it's good news for americans who will now get paid over the holidays. but that only pushes back the issue further down the line. abc news reporter johny fernandez

country actually originated right here in san francisco. we're talking about the salvation army's red kettle campaign. the money they raise each holiday season goes towards all kinds of services, from feeding families to helping people fight addictions. the salvation army's harbor light treatment center offers programs for drug and alcohol addictions. one of their patients, timothy stewart, completed the six month program and is now ringing the bell just blocks away from where he used to buy drugs. >> it's not about me. and the people before me went out and rung the bell and due to me being here, i get to reap the benefits of them standing out there. so the people who come behind me, i want them to reap the benefits. >> in a few months, stewart will move into the next program at the salvation army, and eventually he hopes to serve as a drug resource counselor. union square was transformed into a festive winter block party yesterday. yesterday's winter

a line lit up for this holiday week. it's 641. well, we continue to hear from families dropped by their insurance companies because of google earth aerial footage. this as we see some pretty bizarre non-renewals from insurers across the market right now. reasons that are simply false, vague, and in some cases have nothing to do with the homeowner's property. >> upon review, we have not received sufficient proof that the below hazards have been fully remedied. >> getting dropped by your insurer is bad enough. what's even more frustrating for olivia rivera ochoa when the reason cited about her castro valley property is nowhere to be found. >> there's no hazards or anything. >> just wait. it gets worse for kathryn kaufman in san

francisco. she was dropped in may by liberty mutual because, according to google earth, they found algae mold on my roof. turns out there was no mold, just like the hoovers we profiled last week who also got dropped by liberty. >> they sent me some aerial views that showed absolutely nothing. >> in catherine's case, she also got an inspector to come out. roof. no issues. chimney checked. she even bought a new hvac system. the school bus driver and sfusd teacher was trying to make ends meet working four jobs. yet after three months of investments, she still got dropped. why? >> what they told me was that the pictures i sent were in the wrong format. you're done. so i sent them in another format, and i said, the roof is solid, the work is done. >> turns out the last straw for liberty mutual was a picture formatting issue. >> i offered them more money. i offered them inspections. i offered to do anything they needed or wanted, but they said nope, nope nope nope nope nope.

been a wet morning out there. high surf advisory continues through 4:00. it turns into a high surf warning or is replaced with that as these waves continue to go up significantly. so they've doubled since yesterday. they'll double again. and we're talking 30 to 35 foot waves, maybe even 40 around mavericks. as we get into your monday and right through noon on tuesday. so level one system ending. we've got rain in the later afternoon in the north bay. it is mild. 57 hayward, san jose in the north bay we've got low 50s and also fog out there. certainly an issue. it has been quarter mile visibility at the coast. and then throughout the day we're going to get some sun in here. look at the wet tarmac though from sfo. so early showers afternoon rain late afternoon into the early evening in the north bay. then gusty winds with thunderstorms arriving on tuesday. we'll see a few peeks of sun on christmas day. hanukkah is dry. let's go through the next few hours in the clouds. begin to pull apart for some sunshine out there. then they thicken up and here

comes our next rain. by the evening hours in the north bay. and then it's pretty progressive as it continues to move through about 7:00 to 11:00 in the east bay. then it's out of here. a few showers for your monday, but it's basically dry. and then we'll look at the timing monday night into the overnight hours as we get into our level two are much stronger system that could provide not only the thunderstorm activity, the very heavy downpours, and perhaps some of the creeks and streams coming up very quickly in parts of the bay. this too moves through quickly, which is also good news. and then we'll look at a break for not only later on tuesday, christmas eve, for evening activities, but into the holiday on wednesday. this is tonight, anywhere from a couple hundred to nothing from the peninsula and the south bay to a third throughout much of the bay area. but once again, santa rosa wine country, the outliers picking up anywhere from a half inch today, adding in monday night into early tuesday, could see two inches here in the gree,

henderson died at the age of 65 friday night. henderson is major league baseball's greatest leadoff man and base stealer in history. the oakland native shattered the stolen base record with 1406 swipes. he's the only player to steal 130 bases in a single season. he redefined baseball's leadoff position, becoming the all time leader in leadoff home runs with 81. he won two world series titles, won an mvp, appeared in ten all-star games, he's a gold glove winner and a three time silver slugger award winner. after the warriors game in minnesota, another bay area legend, stephen curry, offered his condolences. >> shout out condolences to the entire henderson family. growing up, you know, as an adult in the in the bay area, especially what he did in oakland, it resonates with me, you know, in terms of representing the bay and doing it at a legendary, iconic level. nobody like him. and so condolences to the whole family. i know the whole bay area mourns
