as we head into the holiday week, americans in the east are waking up to those frigid temperatures outside. let's start with somara theodore with more on this cold snap, and somara, layer up. >> somara: gio, it is brutal out there. look at some of these numbers. now, as we head through the morning, places that are normally cold or under cold weather advisories, feeling like negative two in scranton. boston, five below zero. minus 12 in rome. now the windchills will kind of perk up a little bit tomorrow, but it's still cold when we think about it. two degrees in boston for monday morning for those of still headed to work. so get ready for that. that chill also in the south. let's talk about travel. there's a storm system moving into the great lakes. this is 4:30 p.m. you're wrapping up work. maybe you're hitting the road early on i-94 from chicago to detroit. you'll be dealing with a bit of a wintry mix, and for those on tuesday morning traveling christmas eve, be prepared for snow along i-80, i-90, as well as i-87. we could see up to a dusting, maybe even 6 inches of snow in upstate new york. that's a look at the forecast. janai, back to you. >> janai: somara, thank you for that.

those temperatures are so cold. meanwhile, the tsa expects to screen 40 million passengers nationwide with 4 million traveling through atlanta's airport, the very busiest in the whole world, by january 2nd. that's where abc's faith abubey is right now. faith, we can see how busy is it -- it is behind you. faith, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, janai. people are whipping by quickly going through the security checkpoints here. it's been a busy morning here. on average it's taking people about 30 minutes or so to get through the main security checkpoint, and it could be the busiest ever end-of-year holiday travel crush at the airports and on the roads across the country. nearly 120 million people are expected to travel about 50 miles or more from home over the next several days. in fact, united even added hundreds of new flights just to meet the demand, and southwest is saying they could fly more than half a million people today alone. now what we are seeing in terms of the numbers, it could end up

being a 6.2% increase at tsa checkpoints by the time all of this is over, over the next several days, but aaa says the majority of people are actually not flying. they're not at the airports. the majority of people who are traveling this holiday season are actually opting to drive, taking advantage of the downward trend we have been seeing in the gas prices there. right now the national average is about $3 a gallon, and so beating the traffic on the roads this holiday season will take some planning. usually the mornings are better. today specifically, you want to leave before noon. the worst travel times in terms of heavy traffic will be between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. today. now, if you want to avoid even more traffic, perhaps maybe you wait until christmas eve or even christmas day to leave because a lot of people will have started their celebrations. they'll be indoors and the roads could open up for you all the way to grandma's house. will? >> will: good advice. no matter where you're going, pack your patience. faith abubey, thank you so much for that. turning now to the deadly

it included $100 billion in disaster aid to places hit so hard by fires and storms. a one-year extension of the federal farm bill, and $10 billion in direct assistance to farmers. now it did not include several policies that had been carefully negotiated between democrats and republicans for months. for vocational training, substance abuse treatment, protections for world broadband, and some tough new proposals around china. all of that scrapped at the 11th hour because elon musk really had railed against it. a lot of democrats this morning just blasting republicans for letting musk have so much sway, asking if the richest man on earth is going to have to sign off on every piece of legislation that they negotiate. and some republicans asking if speaker mike johnson should be replaced after the chaos of this week. will? >> will: a lot more twists and turns surely ahead. maryalice parks in washington, thank you. now to luigi mangione, the man accused of killing health care ceo brian thompson is due in court again tomorrow. abc's phil lipof is here with

7:13 am
there was some confusion at least on her part. she thought she would face -- he would be facing state charges of murder in the first-degree with a furtherance of terrorism, but the federal government charged him with four charges including murder as well. so he was taken to federal court first. if found guilty on the federal charges, mangione could face the death penalty. he faces life in prison on the state charges. gio? >> gio: the nation watching every detail of this story, phil. thank you so much for that. we're going to turn now to that major medical headline for obstructive sleep apnea. it's a condition affecting millions of americans, of course, and joining us to break it all down is medical news correspondent, dr. darien sutton. good morning to you. let's talk about this because we have zepbound, it was already fda approved for weight loss. >> dr. darien: yep. >> gio: now fda approved for sleep apnea. surprising, right? >> dr. darien: it's also the
7:14 am
first of its kind. there's been no medication that exists that has been approved to treat sleep apnea. to help everyone understand, sleep apena is so much more than just heavy snoring. these are periods of time you're not breathing, without oxygen, and without treatment, that increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and it's been associated to a shortened lifespan. now on friday, the fda now on friday, the fda has approved zepbound zepbound has been able to treat these patients, and up to 40% of patients have had full resolution of their symptoms and diagnosis. effectively a cure. >> janai: oh my gosh. what could this mean for insurance coverage and medicare? >> dr. darien: this is an ongoing conversation. when talk about these injectable weight loss medications, zepbound, similar to ozempic, insurance companies often cover for the treatment of diabetes. it's been around for more than 20 years, but not often for weight loss, and so likely cost is a big factor here, more than $1,000 a month, more than 40% of americans are considered obese, and also when you think about it federally, medicare and medicaid, the biden administration has proposed a proposal to cover the treatment of weight loss, but that will be pending on the trump administration. cost is still a big factor here.
7:15 am
the cms, the center for medicare and medicaid services estimates it can cost up to $30 billion over a ten-year period, but it's important to note that the cdc cites obesity-related health conditions cost more than $170 billion a year, so there's certainly a healthy argument for discussion here. >> janai: healthy argument. thank you so much for being with us. dr. sutton, always a pleasure. now to our holiday countdown. three -- count them up, one, two, three, days left the shop. we have some last-minute deals and the lowdown on returns. abc's alexis christoforous joins us. alexis, my vacuum cleaner is arriving on monday. >> reporter: great deal on that, too. thank you very much. i'm happy for you. it is crunch time. one, two, three, three days left, but you can still find the perfect present and save some money in the process. how about that? so macy's big holiday countdown sale is going strong. we found this 14-piece knife block set now just 90 bucks. that's down from $286. best buy has last-minute

7:17 am
>> reporter: as you head out to the stores or shop online, you definitely want to check with the specific retailer because some have shorter return windows this year. for example, target's holiday return policy is five weeks shorter. so items purchased between november 7th and christmas eve must be returned by january 24th. others are making you pay to mail your return. remember those days? macy's is charging $9.99 unless you're a star rewards member, and retailers like amazon and best buy are tacking on restocking fees for some electronics. be sure to keep your receipts this year. a lot of retailers now requiring them for returns, guys. >> gio: janai knows i keep those receipts. >> janai: i was going to say, someone knows something about returns. >> gio: thank you, my friend. appreciate you. let's go to football now because it is in full force this weekend. college playoff games making it hard to get off the couch. abc's perry russom has a roundup for us this morning.
