that holiday shopping boost. the news at five starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> well, check it out. a dreary day across much of the bay area. you can see it all that drizzle from our mount tam cam in marin county. even stronger showers are arriving now. good evening and thanks for joining us i'm dion lim. this latest round of rain is part of a parade of storms marching into the bay area. and meteorologist frances dinglasan is tracking that timing. frances. >> yeah, it's definitely starting to hit the north bay right now, but most of the bay area, especially south of the golden gate, had a little bit of a break throughout the afternoon and this morning. so here's live doppler seven tracking some thunderstorms off the coast. in fact, there have been some lightning strikes there, about ten lightning strikes. and we're starting to see some more moderate rainfall move into the north bay. now this is a level storm one on our storm impact scale. it's a light storm through tomorrow. we'll have

rain and showers, slick roads and a high surf warning has also been issued. so here's a futurecast. you'll notice by 7:00 this evening most of the rain, the brunt of it still hitting the north bay, and there could be some moderate rainfall at times. the areas there with the red and the orange. and then by 10:00 this evening, the system starts to fall apart as it slides south. so we'll see some lighter rain falling in the east bay and maybe on the peninsula it quickly dissipates. we get a break turning into showers tomorrow afternoon, but most of the day will be dry tomorrow. however, this next system is a level two system, which arrives late monday night into tuesday, and i'll talk about that in my next report. rainfall totals for tonight, though, range from anywhere from just a few hundredths of an inch in the south bay, over an inch or half an inch, up to an inch in parts of the north bay. and i'll talk about that level. storm two coming up dion. all right.

>> watching it closely francis. thanks. sfo is seeing one of its busiest weekends in history. and tht rain isn't helping. taking a live look now from our sfo cam where so far today, three flights have been canceled, with 129 others delayed. yesterday, eight flights were canceled and 381 others delayed. officials expect more than 85,000 outbound passengers today. yesterday, about 82,000 holiday travelers flew out of sfo. the airport traffic caused a huge backup of cars on the 101 off ramps, causing some people to even miss their flights. now, meantime, our wet weather is also slowing down bart service. the agency says the rain is forcing them to run trains at slower speedsem to today. bart suggests people use their bart trip planner and check real time departures on the bart app or website. bart.gov. now be sure to stay with abc seven news and abc7 news.com for storm. watch as we track the continuing rain. you

>> in the east bay, last minute shoppers are hitting broadway plaza shopping center in walnut creek. what did you buy? >> let me see. almost done. i'm barely prepared more than last year. but, you know, there's always that last minute gift you got to buy. >> this year has been okay. we did a lot of our shopping online, but we are now just checking out the stores and getting the kids out of the house. >> and this is the last evening for winter walk here in san francisco. that's what's happening right behind me. union square alliance says they are still adding up the numbers. crowd numbers, that is. but they say this is definitely been successful in bringing new visitors down to union square, especially during the holidays. and they hope to bring it back again next holiday season. meantime, still lots of shopping to do this season in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> time is ticking. good to see those crowds. all right, cornell, thank you. well, shifting gears now in the south bay, a 15 year old girl who

police say had the gun you see here was arrested as part of a retail theft bust in san jose. police posted pictures of the weapon and devices they say were going to be used to disable antitheft sensors. officers say yesterday several suspects went to two stores at a mall in west san jose with intent to steal. police arrested two adults along with the teenage girl. we're following the story of united health care ceo shooting suspect luigi mangione, who is expected to be arraigned on state charges in new york monday. he also faces several federal charges. abc news reporter jen sullivan is tracking both cases and explains what's next. >> it's a high profile case that will now likely involve two separate trials. luigi mangione faces federal charges and new york state charges in the death of united health care ceo brian thompson. mangione was extradited thursday from pennsylvania to new york, where he faced a slew of federal

charges, including a firearms offense, two stalking charges and murder, three use of a firearm. if found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of either the death penalty or life in prison. his attorneys, dodging questions about the federal case. >> karen, do you have any comment on these charges today? not at this time. thank you so much. >> the federal criminal complaint describes chilling details about contents inside a notebook that authorities say was found on mangione when he was arrested at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania, earlier this month. according to the criminal complaint, the notebook contains several handwritten pages that express hostility towards the health insurance industry. in one entry dated october 22nd, 2024 describes intent to, quote whack, the ceo of one of the insurance companies. >> we always talk about motive. opportunity means all three of those elements are addressed and captured in in the criminal complaint, as well as his notebook. >> mangione is expected to be arraigned in new york monday,

where he faces 11 state charges, including first degree murder, as an act of terrorism was targeted, premeditated and meant to sow terror. jen sullivan, abc seven news. >> abc seven news received calls today about people feeling an earthquake in the east bay. the 2.8 magnitude quake happened at about 11 this morning and was centered in castro valley. people reported feeling it in hayward and up to oaklan. this weekend, a's fans and the baseball world are remembering rickey henderson, the greatest athletic of all time. the hall of famer passed away fy at ucsf from complications with pneumonia and asthma. he was 65 years old and would have turned 66 on christmas day. henderson had a 25 year career in baseball and is the mlb's all time leader in stolen bases, leadoff home runs and runs scored. tributes like this one are popping up in oakland. you can see those flowers, the notes left behind

for the entire bay area coast. 30 to 40 foot waves are expected until tuesday afternoon. you're looking at video just in from pacifica beach. that warning covers all pacific coast beaches, and the national weather service warns of, quote, life threatening swimming and surfing conditions and significant beach erosion in the bayview this afternoon. a local organization is spreading some holiday cheer to local families. volunteers with the nonprofit the guardsmen gave out christmas trees for free to low income families. the guardsmen sell christmas trees every year, with the proceeds going to help at risk kids attend summer camp and after school programs. they give away any trees they have left over. >> we're trying to figure out what to do with all these extra trees, and i had the idea to create this amazing christmas tree giveaway. and here we are now we have all of our guardsmen

annual season of giving campaign today, families shopped at a holiday themed pop up at chase center. it was all part of the warriors wishes for dishes, a season long campaign which serves a million meals each year to underserved families. >> every single time the warriors score a point during the season, 100 meals gets revised to bay area families in need. and so, of course, we got to come out for the holidays and make sure these families get their meals. >> a familiar face, former warrior kelenna azubuike, was there to help pack groceries and take pictures with fans. his nonprofit, the athletes corner, also shared his wife's gourmet cornbread at the event. looks good. all right. we do want to get you prepared for the approaching round of storms. we are talking about the timing and really what to expect. i was really shocked by the coast and the ferocity of those waves. >> yeah, in fact, they're going to get really strong, as you mentioned, up to 40 foot waves, especially in areas like mavericks. so here's a look at live doppler seven. we're already seeing another round of rain heading towards

north bay right now. numerous lightning strikes off the coast. we haven't had any lightning strikes yet all over land, but we'll keep you posted right now. live shot of the golden gate bridge shows you some fog and low clouds moving in temperatures, mainly in the 50s. san francisco 57, oakland 59. but it has been milder in the east bay and south bay. hayward 63, san jose 64 degrees. right now. redwood city 60. half moon bay 57. and check out the south bay. it's been looking dry here most of the day. in the north bay, numbers are cooler. santa rosa 56, petaluma 54. and we're also seeing some mid 50s, fairfield and concord at 54, and both napa and livermore at 57. so here is the futurecast animation. over the next couple hours, most of the rain will still be north of the golden gate bridge. so mainly impacting the north bay. and then as it starts to slide towards the southeast, it really breaks up. and then south of the golden gate bridge will

only get showers, light showers off and on throughout the evening. and then tomorrow we get a break during the day, but during the afternoon hours we'll start to see some light rain move through the bay area once again. and then monday night. late monday night is when our storm level two arrives. so rainfall estimates really vary wildly. in fact, you'll notice just a few hundredths of an inch in parts of the south bay san jose, maybe four hundredths of an inch. and right now they're only at about 80% of normal. but you'll notice above the golden gate bridge, that's where we can see over half an inch, maybe even up to an inch in some of the higher elevations of some of the north bay mountains. santa rosa, possibly 6/10 of an inch, and they are already at over 200% of normal san francisco, about 4/10 of an inch. so that's what you can expect over tonight. and tomorrow afternoon. lows will be in the 50s for the

most part. cooler, though in ukiah and lakeport, upper 40s there and then tomorrow temperatures will be mild once again. we'll even see some upper 60s in parts of the south bay, like san jos, 69 around san francisco 63, oakland 65. so get ready for a stronger moderate storm late monday night into tuesday. winds gusting up to 45mph. we're also going to be tracking some possible thunderstorms and of course, that dangerous surf. so the heaviest rain will move through throughout the hours late monday night into early tuesday morning. and then we actually get a break once it hits tuesday afternoon into christmas and the start of hanukkah. so that's great news. here's a look at live at the accuweather seven day forecast. so late night rain monday. that's when you really need to be ready for that level two storm and then dry. but then more showers might come as early

left to play for this season but pride. a memorable moment for brock purdy. he grew up cheering for the dolphins because his father was a big dan marino fan, and before the game, purdy was finally able to meet marino. what a moment. purdy wears number 13 because of the dolphins legend. niners down three. nothing after a quarter. brock purdy going to find deebo samuel, who fights his way in about three defenders right there. and he's in for the td. the dolphins we all know this coach by former niners offensive coordinator mike mcdaniel right. so lots of former niners on his team including the cheetah raheem mostert. here he is picking up the first down and some. and that helps set up the dolphins first touchdown of the game. tyreek hill going to do his thing. somersaults in niners down three at the half. but these santa niners they're still faithful in miami down nine in the fourth. purdy going to find backup tight end eric saubert for his first td of the year.

everybody excited for him. even purdy love to see it. niners crawl within two points. still within two at the two minute warning. but purdy hit and is picked off. oh no christmas. not so merry this year. the dolphins with the late td to make the margin bigger than it looked. niners lose 2917 dropping to six and nine and now guaranteed a losing record as well as missing the playoffs. >> you start thinking about the plays that could have changed the game. you know get some points up on the board, get some momentum. and so when you walk off the field, it's like, dang it. you know we had plenty of opportunities and we didn't finish. so yeah it hurt. >> here's how the niners were eliminated from contention washington hosting the eagles down five with 15 seconds to go. the commanders jayden daniels finds jamison crowder for the game winner. the commanders win 3633 for their 10th win of the year, eliminating both the niners and the cowboys. all

right, let's end with another note on hall of famer rickey henderson. while most of his career was with the oakland a's, he also played for eight other teams during his decorated career. every one of those clubs paid their respects by posting pictures of henderson on saturday. just a testament to how much he was touched, how much he touched every team that he played for. he finished his career. get this guys. at age 44 with the los angeles dodgers. that was in 2003 and into his final day, still insisted he could contribute to a major league team. and why not? right. >> what a legacy he's left behind. >> definitely a legacy. sad day for niners fans, that's for sure. but you know what? it's hard being at the top y single year. it really is. >> we look ahead to next season. >> lots to look forward to and there's still some to play for. right. pride? yes. show what you got. >> yes. i love your answer, sara. thanks. well, just ahead it is the return of a bright idea. san francisco's firehouses are about to shine, and you're

will be all decked out for annual holiday decorations contests. this is video from last year's event. it was first held from 1948 to 1950, with firehouses wrapped like with christmas presents. it was all revived in 2020. open houses will be held at city fire stations tomorrow, with the winners announced on christmas eve. the sf fire credit union is putting up $4,000 in prize money. it will go to the charity
