starts right now. >> all right, check it out. you can tell our top story from live doppler seven. it is lit up green by the storm that moved through the bay area tonight. and there's an even stronger storm that will follow soon after. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. we're giving you a live look outside right now as christmas week is getting off to a dreary start. but e holiday is expected to be thet e one bright spot out of the next seven days. san francisco was one city that saw rain tonight. cars had their windshield wipers going. we shot this video near the embarcadero and broadway, not far from our abc7 news studios. the entire bay area coast is under a high surf warning. this video is from

pacifica beach. dangerous 30ft tall. waves are expected until tuesday afternoon, so let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist frances dinglasan. and frances, you're tracking a series of storms here. >> yeah, we still have several on the way this week. and i want to show you live doppler seven, the satellite radar image, because we had the brunt of this last system moved through earlier this evening, even bringing us some lightning strikes, especially in the north bay, where we did get some areas over half an inch of rain, but south of the golden gate bridge and farther south, we generally got less than 15 hundredths of an inch as the system moves through. here's what it looks like right now. so we are seeing some light rainfall through parts of the east bay, the peninsula, and it is sliding east overnight will still see some rain. and in addition to the high surf warning, there is also a coastal flood warning also until noon on tuesday so we could see these large breaking waves, especially near mavericks up to 40ft. and these do make for life

threatening conditions. so we still have a storm level one light through tomorrow with rain and showers, slick roads and a high surf warning. and let me show you how it plays out. so most of the rain has passed through, but we will still see some showers. and then we get a bit of a break before some rain returns in the afternoon again, mainly hitting the north bay. however, after that we will see a stronger system move in late monday night for christmas eve. rainfall amounts for the next 24 hours will be very light. we might not even get any rain at all in the south bay, and we could get up to 2/10 in the north bay. dion. >> all right. we are watching it closely francis. thanks. and you can see the very same live doppler seven that our weather team uses by heading to abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app. you can track the rain and see what's coming where you live all week long. now, despite the weather, sfo is seeing one of its busiest weekends in s

history. taking a live look at sfo where you can see it is damp on the ground there today. five flights were canceled and more than 200 delayed. yesterday, eight flights were canceled and another 386 delayed yesterday. there were so many travelers trying to get to the airport that traffic backed up all the way to 101. we heard some people even missed their flights. now, this year's holiday travel season is expected to break records once again. christmas and new year's is forecast to be the busiest, both by air and on the roads. triple a predicts more than 119 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home through new year's day. now, this would top the previous holiday season high, which was set back in 2019, and airlines expect today, thursday, friday and next sunday to be the busiest days. the good news is the worst traffic might be behind us. triple a says that was likely earlier today. well, from record travel to record

shopping, this is the last weekend before christmas and hanukkah, so shoppers who have made their lists are checking them twice for last minute gifts. some malls are seeing big crowds, while others not so much. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn found some examples. >> well, christmas is wednesday, so the clock is ticking and christmas is just around the corner. >> i'm just late. >> we kind of did everything last minute. >> the final push is on to get those shopping lists clear. chances are, though, you'll find very different experiences at different malls. at the san francisco center mall. the holiday decor is splendid. however, the former westfield mall is struggling. the crowds are scarce, the escalator hardly packed, many of the store windows empty. stephanie doughtery of walnut creek, brought her family to san francisco to look at all the lights and then to shop at san francisco center. >> we grew up going to nordstrom. we grew up to go to all these other stores. you know, there's more vacancies, less stores, less restaurants. so that part is sad, but

hopefully it'll come back. >> miles away at town center corte madera, more shoppers are securing christmas gifts at the 11th hour. >> hopefully, this is it. >> according to a recent report from the national retail federation, nearly 157 million americans were expected to wrap up their holiday shopping this past weekend. >> you got to go to sephora for the women in your life. >> matt anacker of san anselmo was shopping for his wife and daughter on this sunday night. >> it's not that bad. i was a little concerned about the parking situation, but it's been good. it's been easy. >> he pointed out the difference between shopping at san francisco center mall and at a mall outside of the city. >> san francisco is busy and kind of crowded, but as you said, the center is really kind of it's on its last legs. but these suburban malls seem to be a lot of energy. >> this teacher from fairfax is just getting started on her holiday shopping. the big crowds at corte madera mall didn't concern her. >> it was okay. some stores were more busy than others. >> she's got a few more presents

to go, but she's not sweating it. all in all, shoppers say they enjoy the spirit of the holiday season in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> take a look at this today. families enjoyed thrive city's winter wonderland ice skating at chase center in san francisco. there are also carolers, treats and an appearance, as you saw from santa claus. the skating rink is open this week on tuesday, thursday and friday. tickets are free, but donations to the warriors community foundation are strongly encouraged. now, speaking of, the warriors are making sure local families are stocked up with groceries to prepare a meal for the holidays. all of this part of the franchise's annual season of giving campaign today, where families shopped at a holiday themed pop up at chase center. all of this was part of the warriors swishes for dishes, a season long campaign which serves a million meals each year to underserved families every single time. >> the warriors score a point during the season, 100 meals gets revised to bay area families in need. and so, of

course, we got to come out for the holidays and make sure these families get their meals. >> there he was, former warrior kelenna azubuike was there to help pack groceries and take pictures with fans. his nonprofit, the athletes corner, also shared his wife's gourmet cornbread at the event this weekend. a's fans and the baseball world are remembering rickey henderson, the greatest athletic of all time. the hall of famer passed away friday at ucsf from complications with pneumonia and asthma. he was 65 years old and would have turned 66 on christmas day. henderson had a 25 year baseball career and is the mlb's all time leader in stolen bases, leadoff home runs and runs scored. tributes like this one are popping up all over oakland. you can see their flowers and notes left at the baseball field of rickey's high school, oakland tech. it's called the field of dreams, as well as rickey henderson field. happening tomorrow. united

health care ceo shooting suspect luigi mangione is expected to be arraigned, and that will be on state charges in new york. he also faces federal charges. abc news reporter jen sullivan is tracking both cases and explains what's next. >> reporter it's a high profile case that will now likely involve two separate trials. luigi mangione faces federal charges and new york state charges in the death of united health care ceo brian thompson. mangione was extradited thursday from pennsylvania to new york, where he faced a slew of federal charges, including a firearms offense, two stalking charges and murder, three use of a firearm if found guilty. he faces a maximum sentence of either the death penalty or life in prison. his attorneys, dodging questions about the federal case. >> karen, do you have any comment on these charges today? not at this time. thank you so much. >> the federal criminal complaint describes chilling details about contents inside a notebook that authorities say

valley medical center. two fire engines will transport toys collected by community members throughout the holiday season. now to stories about building a better bay area. police in antioch helped save a family's christmas. they say a home was burglarized last week, and the thieves got away with all of the christmas gifts. the victim had recently lost her job and was unable to buy new presents. so thanks to officers and the community, they spread some holiday magic by replacing those stolen gifts. now to another christmas miracle. that is what one man is calling an act of kindness by the south san francisco police department. after presents for his family were stolen. james irwin visiting the bay area from illinois to spend christmas with his daughter and grandchildren, had all these things to take to them. >> mostly things to trim the tree, but special things they had picked out for them. >> he says since having major surgery, he can't move as quickly as he used to, and while unloading his car to the hotel, that's when thieves struck.

>> it just it just really sickened me. >> two bags filled with gifts for his grandchildren. no longer where he left them, and i just couldn't believe they were gone. unsure what to do next, irwin reached out to the south san francisco police department in hopes of somehow finding the stolen presents before christmas. he was sure he'd never see them again. that was until three detectives came knocking on his door later that night. i was shocked. police weren't able to find the stolen items, but that didn't stop them from doing something to help. >> i couldn't imagine the generosity and the friendliness. >> officers started a fund and were able to buy irwin's grandchildren all new presents. >> i'm from a very small rural area, and to be in a major city like this and have the police officers be so concerned about a little matter like this of my grandchildren's gift, it just boggled my mind. >> irwin says it's one of the kindest things he's ever witnessed and is full of thanks. this holiday season. his daughter amanda agrees he was in tears when he got in the car, and he was so touched by this act of kindness.

gives you an idea of how light the rain is. the precipitation rate is about one hundredths of an inch per hour. here's a live look, though, at the bay bridge toll plaza, where we are still seeing some light rain, even some ponding on the roadways. you can see those cars splashing water as they drive past or through those ponds. temperatures still pretty mild in san francisco, redwood city and half moon bay, 57 degrees oakland hayward at 60. san jose 62 degrees. and then here's a live shot in san jose. so the south bay and san jose is not going to get too much rain tomorrow. and from this evening forward until our next system. i'll tell you about that in a little bit. so in the north bay we are seeing some colder numbers like santa rosa 55, petaluma 52. also in napa and fairfield near the mid 50s, concord 53 and livermore 54 degrees. and this time we're showing you wet roads on the embarcadero. you can see the ferry building there and the bay bridge in the background. we

will be dealing with some patchy, dense fog overnight and into tomorrow morning, but for tomorrow you can expect mainly drizzle and a few light showers and the rest of these showers tomorrow afternoon will mostly hit the north bay and miss a lot of areas south of san francisco. then get ready for this next system, which will be stronger on tuesday. it comes into the north bay possibly as early as tomorrow night, 11 p.m, but generally the heavier rain will be moving in during the early morning hours of tuesday. there is a chance of thunderstorms also after that passes. wednesday will be dry and cool for not thanksgiving, christmas and the start of hanukkah. so in addition to the coastal flood warning, there's also high surf warning still in effect through tuesday. large breakers be extra careful if you're heading to the beaches, because there's also that coastal flood warning, so you'll want to be careful if you're heading to any area along the coast,

because there could be life threatening conditions there. tomorrow morning's lows will generally be in the 50s. a little bit cooler, though, in lakeport at 48 but low to mid mid 50s for everyone. san francisco, oakland and san jose all at 55 degrees. and we could see some of that thick fog, especially near the coast and in some areas inland also overnight. and then tomorrow afternoon temperatures are going to warm up a little bit. we could even see some upper 60s in the south bay, like san jose 69, fremont 68. we'll see low to mid 60s around the bay. oakland and san mateo at 65, san francisco 63. notice the pops of green in the afternoon tomorrow. we'll still see some of those light showers and sprinkles, mainly in the north bay. so after that, our next system is a level two. it's a moderate storm, arriving very late monday night at 11 p.m. in the north bay and continuing through tuesday into the morning and

afternoon. most areas will get about half an inch of rain up to an inch. gusty winds up to 45mph. so here's the heaviest rainfall. you see this area of red here around 5:00 in the morning. you don't want to be driving around five in the morning around the bay area up until nine in the morning, then it quickly moves out. in addition to that, there is i just want to show you quickly the rainfall up to an inch, especially in parts of the north bay. and in addition to that, you do not want to be driving to and from tahoe on tuesday because they could get up to ten inches of snow above 6000ft. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. some afternoon rain tomorrow. gusty, possibly thunderstorms on tuesday, but then looking good for wednesday. but then we have more showers off and on thursday, friday, saturdy and sunday. so it's going to be a wet one. >> by the way, it feels like it was just thanksgiving doesn't it? >> i know i get my holidays mixed up sometimes.

abc seven news live. >> dozen people were killed by israeli airstrikes. the attacks targeted a home and a former school. it's been more than 14 months since the war began, when hamas led militants stormed into southern israel in a surprise attack, killing some 1200 people and abducting about 250. tonight, there are signs of hope for a hostage deal between israel and hamas as negotiations continue. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with bay area families who have loved ones still held captive. >> reporter this was the scene

one year ago. hamas releasing a handful of hostages, including two of oren rubenstein's three loved ones kidnaped in the october 7th attack. the pacifica residents been pushing for the release of the hostages since the hamas attack in october of 2023 last year, plastering these posters across downtown san francisco and now with reports of israel and hamas closing in on a hostage deal, comes renewed optimism. >> my thought is that this is going to happen. we've all been praying for it for a year and a half, almost. >> israel says hamas is still holding 100 hostages, with over a third of them believed to be dead, one of them being oren's cousin. >> alon is still a hostage. we know that we want him back, and we think he'll come back. >> i think everybody in the jewish community has been on edge for more than a year now. so the idea that a hostage deal is getting nearer, especially towards the holidays and the end of the year, you know, i think

get everything we want in, you know, a first round of a hostage deal. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> we're following the story of an attack at a christmas market in germany. the suspect was charged with five counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. a nine year old boy and four women were killed. 50 year old taleb al abdul mohsen is accused ofal driving a car through the market last friday night. officials say he moved to germany from saudi arabia in 2006, and has been making anti-islamic and threatening statements in recent months. germany's chancellor says of the more than 200 people injured, 41 are still at risk of dying. two u.s. navy pilots are said to be okay after a u.s. guided missile cruiser mistakenly shot down their fighter jet over the red sea. military officials are calling it an apparent case of friendly fire. abc news reporter perry russom has details now from

washington. >> the u.s. military says a full investigation is underway after one of its f, a 18 fighter jets was shot down by a u.s. guided missile cruiser. the incident happened early sunday in the skies over the red sea, according to u.s. central command. this was an apparent case of friendly fire. the two u.s. navy pilots on board were able to eject safely from the aircraft, though one did sur what the military has described as minor injuries. the pentagon says the fighter jet had just taken off from the deck of the uss harry truman aircraft carrier, when one of the ships and its strike group, the uss gettysburg, mistakenly shot it down. the navy has been patrolling the region for more than a year now to combat ongoing attacks on commercial ships from the iranian backed houthis in yemen. several hours before this friendly fire incident, the military says u.s. forces conducted precision airstrikes against a missile storage facility and a command and control facility used by the houthis, and also shot down multiple uncrewed aerial vehicles and an anti-ship cruise missile. that operation included

peninsula, although it does look dry in the south bay where temperatures will be mild. san jose high of 69, san francisco 63, oakland 65 degrees. but after tomorrow, late tomorrow night at around 11 p.m. to 3 p.m. tuesday is when you do not want to be outside. we will % rainfalls up to an inch or more in the north bay. possible thunderstorms winds up to 45mph. dangerous surf and coastal conditions with a high surf warning in effect and also a coastal flood warning. in addition, there is a winter weather advisory. you probably don't want to drive to and from tahoe on tuesday, because it could get up to ten inches of snow above 6000ft, and that makes for difficult travel conditions. chains are likely. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. light storm light rain tomorrow. gusty
