>> and we're going to start with that check of the weather. we saw the camera showed some wet roads. yeah. >> it's cloudy, it's misty. it's low visibility to start out our week. so here's a live look at our bay bridge toll plaza camera, where you can clearly see we're dealing with mist out there. some drizzle, some light showers across parts of the region. we'll flip it on over to doppler. and what's happening a lot of this moisture is actually falling right underneath the radar beam. so you're not seeing a whole lot of action on live doppler seven. but there's a lot of low cloud cover. there's a lot of mist. there's a lot of drizzle. in fact, you look at visibility reduced in the north bay, the east bay right now. so just prepare for a cloudy day and a mild one as well. live doppler seven along with satellite showing you we're actually tracking a cold front moving through this morning. and that's why it's so drizzly out there. it's a level one today. we have showers, mainly light in nature, but please be aware of the coastline. today we have a high surf warning where waves could be in excess of 20ft throughout the day. it's not terribly cold out there. we're at 60 right now in oakland, 62, in

san jose. so just expect clouds all day today, mist and drizzle throughout the afternoon. temperatures mainly in the mid and upper 60s. but heading into tomorrow we are tracking some heavy rain, some gusty winds. we'll show you that coming up in about eight minutes. let's check in with sue and see those drive times this morning. >> thank you drew and good monday morning everyone. as drew was saying the roads ae slick and that is the biggest concern for your drive this morning. no major stalls or accidents to talk about in your entire ride. coming south on 101 from novato through san rafael and southern marin across the golden gate. it is definitely foggy and you will find yourself coming up on it pretty quickly over the waldo grade. so heads up you can see the fog on our traffic map. you can see our early morning commuters coming up and over the altamont out of tracy. slowing your drive just a bit. and we just watched this accident clear. it was eastbound 80 near grand in oakland. for a time, all lanes were shut down. you can still see the residual

recovering. that should be a recovering all the way next time we speak. >> okay. thank you so much, sue. certainly rainy, wet and foggy out there this morning. and despite the wet weather, sfo saw one of its busiest weekends in its history. we have a live look from sfo this morning. yesterday more than 200 flights were delayed this morning, though, looking a lot better. sfo is reporting 26 delays, oakland has two and san jose has three delays now. on sunday there were so many travelers trying to get to the airport. traffic was backed up all the way to 101. sfo said they handled nearly 167,000 departing passengers this weekend. we heard some people even missed their flights due to all the congestion there and travelers passing through bay area airports were part of the nation's record breaking holiday travel season. christmas and new year's is forecast to be the busiest both by air and on the roadways. triple a predicts more than 119 million people will travel at least 50 miles from their home through new year's

day. this would top the previous holiday season high, which was set back in 2019. airlines expect thursday, friday and next sunday to be the busiest days. there is some good news, though. a bit of a silver lining. the worst traffic might be behind us. triple a says that was likely yesterday. >> now, from record travel to record shopping days away from christmas and hanukkah, shoppers who have made their lists are checking them twice for last minute gifts. here's abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn. >> well, christmas is wednesday, so the clock is ticking and christmas is just around the corner. >> i'm just late. >> we kind of did everything last minute. >> the final push is on to get those shopping lists clear. chances are, though, you'll find very different experiences at different malls. at the san francisco center mall. the holiday decor is splendid. however, the former westfield mall is struggling. the crowds are scarce, the escalator hardly packed, many of the store windows empty. stephanie doughtery of walnut creek, brought her family to san

francisco to look at all the lights and then to shop at san francisco center. >> we grew up going to nordstrom. we grew up to go to all these other stores. you know, there's more vacancies, less stores, less restaurants. so that part is sad, but hopefully it'll come back. >> miles away at town center corte madera, more shoppers are securing christmas gifts at the 11th hour. >> hopefully, this is it. >> according to a recent report from the national retail federation, nearly 157 million americans were expected to wrap up their holiday shopping this past weekend. >> you got to go to sephora for the women in your life. >> matt anacker of san anselmo was shopping for his wife and daughter on this sunday night. >> it's not that bad. i was a little concerned about the parking situation, but it's been good. it's been easy. >> he pointed out the difference between shopping at san francisco center mall and at a mall outside of the city. >> san francisco is busy and kind of crowded, but as you said, the center is really kind of it's on its last legs. but these suburban malls seem to be a lot of energy.

local, state and federal government offices are also closed on wednesday. >> you'll want to plan ahead if you are taking public transportation during the holidays tomorrow. muni, bart, vta, ac transit and samtrans plan to operate normal service, but on christmas day, they will all operate on a holiday schedule. caltrain will run on a modified schedule tomorrow and a holiday schedule on wednesday. >> president joe biden is taking 37 people off of federal death row. he announced this morning that he was commuting their sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole. the majority of these individuals were convicted for murders, but biden did not excuse those with charges of terrorism or hate related killings. there are three people remaining on federal death row, and they include dzhokhar tsarnaev, one of the two brothers responsible for the deadly boston bombing in 2013. dylann roof, a white nationalist who killed nine people at a historically black church in

charleston, south carolina, in 2015. and robert bowers, who killed 11 worshipers at pittsburgh's tree of life synagogue in 2018. and today, united health care ceo shooting suspect luigi mangione is expected to be arraigned on state charges in new york. he also faces federal charges. abc news reporter jen sullivan is tracking both cases and explains what's next. >> it's a high profile case that will now likely involve two separate trials. luigi mangione faces federal charges and newne york state charges in the death of united health care ceo brian thompson. mangione was extradited thursday from pennsylvania to new york, where he faced a slew of federal charges, including a firearms offense, two stalking charges and murder, three use of a firearm if found guilty. he faces a maximum sentence of either the death penalty or life in prison. his attorneys, dodging questions about the federal case. >> karen, do you have any

comment on these charges today? not at this time. thank you so much. >> the federal criminal complaint describes chilling details about contents inside a notebook that authorities say was found on mangione when he was arrested at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania, earlier this month. according to the criminal complaint, the notebook contains several handwritten pages that express hostility towards the health insurance industry. in one entry dated october 22nd, 2024 describes intent to, quote whack, the ceo of one of the insurance companies. >> we always talk about motive. opportunity means all three of those elements are addressed and captured in in the criminal complaint as well as his notebook. >> mangione is expected to be arraigned in new york monday, where he faces 11 state charges, including first degree murder, as an act of terrorism was targeted, uh, premeditated and meant to sow terror. jenn sullivan abc seven news.

>> and if you missed it on tv, manhunt, luigi mangione and the ceo murder a special edition of 2020 is now streaming on hulu. it takes a deep dive into the case that has fascinated the nation, a's fans and the baseball world are remembering rickey henderson, the greatest athletic of all time this morning. >> the hall of famer passed away friday at ucsf from complications with pneumonia and asthma. he was 65 years old and would have turned 66 on christmas day. henderson had a 25 year baseball career. he is the mlb's all time leader when it comes to stolen bases, leadoff home runs and runs scored. tributes like this one are popping up in oakland. we'll show you that in just a moment. you can see in the video we'll get to flowers. there they are. and notes left at the baseball field at rickey's high school, oakland tech. it's called the field of dreams, as well as rickey henderson field. >> and as you can imagine, notes of condolences have been pouring in from across the country. the

a's released the following statement, saying in part, quote, rickey was undoubtedly the most legendary player in oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of a's fans over his 14 seasons, wearing green and gold as fellow bash brother jose canseco played with henderson during their glory years of 1989 to 1992. canseco sent this message on x, saying in part, i'll never forget all the incredible memories we created together. memories i'll never forget. rest easy, my friend. >> in san francisco, giants legend barry bonds shared this message on facebook. he wrote i'm so glad we were able to see each other recently and laugh about old times. the san francisco giants organization is also reacting to henderson's death. it released a statement calling henderson one of the greatest players of the game, then went on to say, quote, a true bay area legend. rickey's larger than life personality and love for the game made him a beloved figure across the baseball world. our thoughts,

of kindness by the south san francisco police department after another family's presents were stolen. >> james irwin visiting the bay area from illinois to spend christmas with his daughter and grandchildren, had all these things to take to them. >> mostly things to trim the tree, but special things they'd picked out for them. >> he says since having major surgery, he can't move as quickly as he used to, and while unloading his car to the hotel, that's when thieves struck. >> it just it just really sickened me. >> two bags filled with gifts for his grandchildren. no longer where he left them, and i just couldn't believe they were gone. unsure what to do next, irwin reached out to the south san francisco police department in hopes of somehow finding the stolen presents before christmas. he was sure he'd never see them again. that was until three detectives came knocking on his door later that night. i was shocked. police weren't able to find the stolen items, but that didn't stop them from doing something to help. >> i couldn't imagine the generosity and the friendliness. >> officers started a fund and were able to buy irwin's

some light rain from time to time throughout the afternoon. but what we're watching is first thing tomorrow morning. this is 330 in the morning. on tuesday we have this line of very heavy rain moving through here, some gusty winds in the morning and that continues to lead to some heavier showers at 630 tomorrow. we'll track some downpours and even the chance of a rumble of thunder thirsting as we head into the afternoon. all of this rain is going to get out of here, so it's certainly a wet start to the day on christmas eve tomorrow. but we find some drier skies in the afternoon and in the evening. so looking at total rainfall out there, we will find some heavier showers, about a half of an inch to an inch and a half of rain expected throughout the day tomorrow. so we do have some standing water issues first thing in the morning on tuesday, and likely some gusty winds here at 4 a.m. as that line of heavy rain moves through, we'll find those winds gusting about 20 to 35mph. no wind advisories out there, but just be aware it will be a breezy and wet christmas eve morning. we do have a winter weather advisory kicking in here tomorrow. about 6 to 10in of

release that report after previously deciding to keep it under wraps. the report was the result of an investigation looking into alleged drug use and possible sexual misconduct involving a minor and other allegations against the former representative. gaetz has denied any wrongdoing. president elect donald trump is fighting back against attacks from democrats that have mockingly called billionaire elon musk president musk. democrats have taken this line of attack against trump after musk took to his social media platform x and effectively blackmailed republicans into killing a bipartisan government spending bill last week. democrats have been calling out musk and his growing influence in government decisions. yesterday in phoenix, trump said musk is not the president and won't be. >> but elon has done an amazing job. isn't it nice to have smart people that we can rely on? don't we want that? >> trump says musk will head the newly created department of government efficiency. >> this morning, a full

investigation into a u.s. guided missile cruiser mistakenly mistakenly shooting down one of their own fighter jets over the red sea. the u.s. navy says its two pilots are okay. here's abc news reporter nicole d'antonio. reporter. >> this morning, a full investigation into a rare incident over the red sea after a navy fighter jet was shot down, apparently by friendly fire. two navy pilots ejected from the plane, both later safely recovered, one with minor injuries. the pentagon says the f, a 18 fighter jet, had just taken off from the deck of the uss harry truman aircraft carrier when one of its escort ships, the uss gettysburg, mistakenly shot it down. the u.s. military has been patrolling the area for more than a year. they're combating the houthi fighters in yemen, backed by iran, who have been attacking commercial ships in the waters between the middle east and africa. >> it's important to point out that some of these decisions are just a matter of seconds before they fire at, say, an incoming

emergency shelter is opening for marin county's unhoused population. the overnight shelter is located at the marin health and wellness campus at 3240 kerner boulevard in san rafael. it will be open from 5 p.m. tonight through 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. people are allowed to bring personal belongings to the shelter. there is also shelter available for families. >> the uc berkeley botanical garden is closing early starting today. the public garden features over 10,000 different plant species for people to admire throughout the year. the gardens holiday hours start from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and go through the 26th, the day after christmas. so that will be this thursday. and then on saturday, hours will go back to normal. >> today, hundreds of families will be receiving christmas turkeys can courtesy of the bay area rescue mission. starting at 9 a.m, families can line up to pick up their turkey dinners at 200 mcdonald avenue in richmond. the bay area rescue mission says they will be helping nearly

an issue right now. live look from our exploratorium camera. on a perfect morning, you would be able to see the entire skyline of san francisco. we're not seeing any of that out there right now. in fact, over the last hour, visibility has been dropping in a lot of areas, especially along the peninsula, in the city and in the north bay. so we're dealing with a lot of low cloud cover out there this morning, mist and drizzle and some light showers throughout the day. it's also pretty warm out there. we're starting in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. so here's the morning planner showing you that small chance of finding drizzle in your neighborhood this morning. we'll kind of hang in the 50s and low 60s throughout much of the morning. a lot of cloud cover, not a whole lot of sunshine today. so the storm impact scale is a level one today for showers, mainly light. some slick roads. and we have that high surf warning along our entire coastline today and tomorrow. so daytime highs 63 in the city today near 70 in san jose, 61 in santa rosa, 65 in oakland. so it is a warm afternoon despite a lot of cloud cover. so here's future weather mist

and drizzle to be found throughout the morning. some low cloud cover as well. some light showers from time to time. there's no organized system moving through today. it's a cold front that's passing by, supplying us with the light shower chances. tomorrow morning though, i really want to highlight this because first thing in the morning we will be tracking a line of some downpours, some heavy rain and some gusty winds. this is 330 tomorrow morning. that heavy rain does continue through about 6:07 a.m, and then we'll transition to lighter showers for the rest of the morning. but we could quickly pick up anywhere from a half of an inch to an inch of rain first thing tomorrow morning, and then it's actually drier tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. so rainfall totals today and tomorrow we will add up anywhere from a half of an inch to about an inch of rain coming our way through tuesday. winds will be an issue first thing tomorrow morning. we'll see some gusts about 20 to 35mph as that rain moves through the region. not a whole lot of snow coming our way. this is a pretty warm system. we have a winter weather advisory for the sierra. about 6 to 10in of snow coming our way tomorrow, so

malfunctioned, trapping skiers in the air. here's abc news reporter alison kosik. >> this morning, a dramatic rescue at a popular ski resort in colorado. skiers and snowboarders evacuated from a gondola after it malfunctioned, leaving them stranded and suspended in mid-air for six hours. >> still hang on. >> rescuers using ropes and ladders to save the 174 people who became trapped when the ski lift malfunctioned. saturday afternoon, investigators say this photo posted online clearly showing a cracked piece of metal, was part of the malfunction. >> it stopped, as it should. we're not sure exactly what caused the failure on the part, so the part has currently it has been removed. the new part is being replaced. >> no one was injured. the incident was the first time the lift has been evacuated since opening six years ago. passengers telling us they're thankful for the first responders who saved their
