some fine mist, some light drizzle, a lot of cloud cover out there. so first thing this morning you will encounter some wet roadways, but we're not tracking any heavy showers on your monday. look at some of these numbers right now. good morning oakland. it's 61 degrees. it is pretty warm right now for this time of the day, 59 in san jose. we're at 54 in santa rosa holding at about 58 in the city. ocean temperature right now is at 54 degrees. we have a high surf warning in effect along our entire coastline today. breakers could exceed 30ft. so the ocean current is very active and that is dangerous for swimmers and surfers. a level one today for those showers mainly light the biggest issue you'll encounter just some slick roadways out there and that low visibility. so looking at the morning planner you notice those chances of some light mist, some light drizzle. it's just a real cloudy morning out there. get used to the overcast skies. we'll keep the cloud cover all day long. temperatures though. we'll get you into the mid and upper 60s later on today. let's check in with sue, see how the roads are doing this morning. >> good morning drew. just

gearing up here with the live look at oakland and where are unfortunately our picture froze. and that's what i was trying to fix for you. let's take a look at the drive time from hercules. all the way to san francisco is looking pretty good. and with the bay bridge, no metering lights yet. we're already at 603 on this monday morning, so we do have heavy mist and fog and a fog advisory for the richmond-san rafael bridge. we have an accident blocking the right lanes. this one is in pleasanton west 580 near hopyard. and you can see it's backed up now towards hacienda. it looks like and we'll move over to san francisco. just getting first reports of an accident. north 101 near vermont street blocking a lane of traffic. and it too is starting to stack up on your north 101 commute, guys. >> okay. thank you so much, sue. well, despite the wet weather, sfo saw one of its busiest weekends in its history. we're going to give you a live, excuse me, live look from our sfo camera. yesterday more than 200

flights were delayed. and this morning sfo is reporting 35 delays. oakland has two delays in san jose has four at this hour. on sunday there were so many travelers trying to get to the airport. traffic was backed up all the way to 101. you've seen this before. sfo said they handled nearly 167,000 departing passengers this weekend. we heard some people even missed their flights because of the congestion. >> travelers passing through bay area airports were a part of the nation's record breaking holiday travel season. christmas and new year's forecast to be the busiest both by air and on the roads. triple a predicts more than 119 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home through new year's day. now, this would top the previous holiday season high, which was set back in 2019. airlines expect thursday, friday and sunday to be the busiest days, but there is some good news. the worst traffic might be behind us. triple a says that was likely yesterday. >> if you were a last minute

shopper, this is the final push to get those shopping lists cleared, and chances are things will look different depending on which malls you go to. shoppers are apparently looking outside of san francisco for their gifts this year, noticing how different malls compare to the san francisco center mall. the one thing they can't ignore is the lack of stores at the center mall. >> san francisco is busy and kind of crowded, but as you said, the center is really kind of it's on its last legs. but these suburban malls seem to be a lot of energy. >> meanwhile, shoppers found crowded parking lots and stores in other bay area cities. new data showed that over half of last minute shoppers are planning to purchase gifts in person this year. >> all right, last minute shoppers, we're still talking to you because you have two days. we know target is open on christmas eve from 7 to 8 p.m. maxx, marshalls and homegoods will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. all of these stores are

closed on christmas day. as for grocery stores, safeway is open on christmas eve and some locations will also be open on the 25th. trader joe's and whole foods are both open on christmas eve, but they're closed christmas day. >> and if you're looking to ship some things last minute ups, fedex, they're both open on christmas eve with modified hours, but they are closed on the 25th. most local, state and federal government offices will also be closed on wednesday. >> and you want to plan ahead if you're taking public transportation during the holidays. tomorrow. muni, bart, vta, ac transit, and samtrans. they plan to operate normal service, but on christmas day, they will all operate on a holiday schedule. caltrain will run on a modified schedule tomorrow and a holiday schedule on wednesday. >> the man suspected of killing the ceo of unitedhealthcare is scheduled to be arraigned on state charges in a manhattan court today. luigi mangione is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder as an act of terrorism. he's also

facing federal charges for the murder of brian thompson. according to the federal criminal complaint, a notebook found on mangione when he was arrested expressed hostility towards the health insurance industry and intent to kill a ceo of one of the insurance companies. >> we always talk about motive. opportunity means all three of those elements are addressed and captured in in the criminal complaint, as well as his notebook. >> the state trial against mangione is expected to begin before the federal trial. the next scheduled court date for his federal case is january the 18th. and if you missed it on tv. manhunt luigi mangione and the ceo murder a special edition of 2020. it's now streaming on hulu. takes a deep dive into the case that has fascinated the country. >> a's fans and the baseball world are remembering rickey henderson, the greatest athletic of all time. the hall of famer passed away friday at ucsf from

complications with pneumonia and asthma. he was 65 years old and would have turned 66 on christmas day. henderson had a 25 year baseball career. he is the mlb's all time leader in stolen bases, leadoff home runs and runs scored. tributes like this one are popping up all around oakland. you can see flowers and notes left at the baseball field of rickey's high school, oakland tech. it is called the field of dreams, as well as rickey henderson field. >> the a's released the following statement, saying in part, quote, rickey was undoubtedly the most legendary player in oakland history and made an indelible mark on generations of a's fans over his 14 seasons. wearing the green and gold and his fellow bash brother jose canseco played with henderson during their glory years of 1989 to 1992. >> canseco sent this message on x, saying in part, i'll never forget all the incredible memories we created together. memories i'll never forget. rest

degrees. it is very mild out there this morning. it's mostly cloudy overhead. visibility is okay here. but in other areas we are seeing those numbers less than a mile on over to our san jose camera this morning. a live look very quiet here. cloudy. and it's on the mild side again 59 degrees. visibility is good. some light winds, but we'll take a look at visibility across the region. the city right now having an issue with visibility. we're down to a fourth of a mile in the north bay. you can see novato has some fog. just a cloudy, misty, drizzly morning out there. we'll keep light showers in the forecast all day long. so today we will be at a level one for those showers, just mainly light in nature from time to time. slick roads, some slower travel times out there swease tracking that. and we also have some rough surf and some dangerous swimming conditions, so a high surf warning is in effect right now. this will last until tomorrow. we could see breakers upwards of 30 35ft, possibly up to 40ft. that is life threatening when it comes to our ocean current. you

new job. experts are warning to be extra aware of scams out there. apparently, scammers are now using job postings to lure people into sharing their personal data. the scam goes as far as even conducting fake job interviews. experts say the big thing to look out for is questionable text messages offering jobs. >> it says, hey, you know, there's this job opportunity. it provides you flexibility x, y, and z. please feel free to give us a ring at this phone number.

>> experts say you should always be wary of recruitment emails from personal accounts like yahoo and gmail. another red flag is requesting or sending money. scammers will claim the fees are for things like establishing employment. just don't do it. just don't fall for it. police in antioch are helping to save a family's christmas. thieves got away with all of their christmas gifts during a home burglary last week. the victim had recently lost her job and was unable to buy new presents. thanks to officers and the community, they were able to tap into some holiday magic and replace the stolen gifts. now, to an act of kindness by the south san francisco police department after a family's presents were stolen. james irwin is visiting the bay area from illinois to spend christmas with his daughter and grandchildren. he says the thieves struck as he was unloading his car, two bags filled with gifts for his grandchildren were stolen. irwin reached out to the south san

francisco police department in hopes of somehow finding the stolen presents before christmas. well, police were not able to find the stolen items, but that didn't stop them from doing something to help. officers then started a fund and were able to buy irwin's grandchildren. all those new presents. >> i'm from a very small rural area, and to be in a major city like this and have the police officers be so concerned about a little matter like this of my grandchildren's gift, it just boggled my mind. >> irwin says it was one of the kindest things he's ever witnessed and is full of thanks. this holiday season. times. >> the annual showdown of lights displays san francisco fire stations will be all decked out for their annual holiday decorations contest. you're looking at video from last year's event. the tradition started in the late 1940s, with firehouses wrapped like christmas presents. it was revived in 2020. open houses will be held at city fire stations tonight, with the winners announced on christmas

our golden gate bridge camera. we are seeing some light showers. if you look closely, you can see the headlights kind of kicking up some of that water on the roads. so we do have some light showers from time to time throughout the day. here's a look at your day planner. as we head deeper into the day. you'll find temperatures first thing this morning. on the mild side, upper 50s, lower 60s. as we get you going on this monday sunrise here at 723 this morning, we have fog, we have mist, we have drizzle, we have low visibility in spots. so just be aware of that. it stays pretty overcast all day today with those light showers from time to time. daytime highs getting into the 60s later on this afternoon. so you're looking at the rainfall chances as we go throughout the entire day. not super high for any sort of time period. just from time to time. may have a light shower in your neighborhood. it will be very fast moving and rainfall totals today less than about a quarter of an inch where we do find those showers. so today we'll keep those showers in the forecast throughout the afternoon. we'll keep the cloud cover as well. your daytime highs. this feels pretty nice

for this time of year. mid and upper 60s for a lot of us. but as we head into tomorrow morning this will become a level two, a moderate storm for heavy rain at times gusty winds and will keep that dangerous surf along our coast with that high surf warning still in effect. let's go hour by hour for you first thing tomorrow morning. i'm talking first thing. this is 230 in the morning. we'll track some heavy downpours beginning in the north bay. those will cross the city. the east bay, the south bay, closer to sunrise, 6:37 a.m. and at this time we also will find some gusty winds as well. tomorrow morning looks pretty wet. different story tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow afternoon looks pretty dry. we'll finish the day with clearing skies and that will lead to a dry holiday on wednesday for christmas and hanukkah. so looking at rainfall totals with this system today and tomorrow, for a lot of us, we're looking at a half of an inch to an inch of rain. just be aware first thing tomorrow morning will likely have some standing water on our roadways as some of these downpours move through. winds are gusty. we don't have any sort of wind advisory posted, but they'll be breezy from time to time. in the

rafael bridge, and there are patches of it all throughout the bay area. some very, very thick highway four. that's hercules all the way into the city. still a nice drive this morning. 35 minutes. problem spots 24 westbound at camino pablo. we have an overturned accident blocking the middle lanes. if you're backed up now all the way towards lafayette, westbound 24. and once you get into san francisco, or i should say on the bay bridge, san francisco side towards fremont street, we had an accident. it is still out there blocking a lane, and the bridge is pretty backed up, although no metering lights at the toll plaza as of yet. >> all right, sue, thank you. >> now, this past weekend, flights into and out of sfo surpassed numbers from previous years. and this morning there are 35 flights delayed out of sfo and one canceled flight. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has more on what travelers can expect today. reporter you can see this line behind me here at the airport. >> it's very busy at sfo this

year. so if you are flying for the holidays, plan for some big crowds at sfo. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> this morning, there are signs of hope for a hostage deal between israel and hamas. it comes after more than a dozen people were killed by israeli airstrikes over the weekend. it's been 14 long months since the war began as negotiations continue. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with bay area families who have loved ones still being held captive. >> this was the scene one year ago. hamas releasing a handful of hostages, including two of oren rubinstein's three loved ones kidnaped in the october 7th attack. the pacifica residents been pushing for the release of the hostages since the hamas attack in october of 2023. last year, plastering these posters across downtown san francisco and now with reports of israel and hamas closing in on a hostage deal, comes renewed optimism. >> my thought is that this is going to happen. we've all been

praying for it for a year and a half, almost. >> israel says hamas is still holding 100 hostages, with over a third of them believed to be dead, one of them being oren's cousin. >> alon is still a hostage. we know that we want him back, and we think he'll come back. >> i think everybody in the jewish community has been on edge for more than a year now. so the idea that a hostage deal is getting nearer, especially towards the holidays and the end of the year, you know, i think everybody has their fingers and their toes crossed to hear good news. >> the deal, according to officials involved in the mediation, would include the exchange of israeli hostages for palestinian prisoners, releasing 30 israeli hostages in the first phase, half of whom are believed to be alive and pellinore. calderon is hoping her cousin is one of them. >> my cousin calderon was kidnaped with his daughter and his son in their attempt to flee the children, sahar and erez,

were returned in the very last hostage deal the last time. >> now trying to remain hopeful her cousin will be returned. >> we have to really be careful about what we get excited about and what we get emotional about, because the emotions are so raw and the situation is so raw that it makes it very difficult to have any emotion about it. >> i think, you know, the best thing we can do is really hope for the best, to pray for the best, and also make sure that we're prepared for a longer fight, knowing that we may not get everything we want in, you know, a first round of a hostage deal. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> we are following the story of an attack at a christmas market in germany. the suspect has been charged with five counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. a nine year old boy and four women were killed. 50 year old talib abdul mohsen is accused of driving a car through the market last friday night. officials say he

moved to germany from saudi arabia in 2006, and has been making anti-islamic and threatening statements in recent months. germany's chancellor says of the more than 200 people injured, 41 are still at risk of dying. >> president biden is taking 37 people off of federal death row. >> he announced this morning that he was commuting their sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole. the majority of these individuals were convicted for murders, but biden did not excuse those with charges of terrorism or hate related killings. there are three people remaining on the federal death row, and they include dzhokhar tsarnaev, one of two brothers responsible for the deadly boston marathon bombing in 2013. dylann roof, a white nationalist who killed nine people at a historically black church in charleston, south carolina. this was back in 2015, and robert bowers, who killed 11 worshipers at pittsburgh's tree of life

synagogue. that was in 2018. new this morning, matt gaetz has filed a lawsuit in an effort to stop the house ethics committee from releasing its report on the former congressman. that report is expected to be made public today. gaetz's lawsuit claims its release would be unconstitutional given he is now a private citizen. a final draft of the report, obtained by cnn, shows the committee found gaetz paid tens of thousands of dollars to women for sex or drugs on at least 20 occasions, and that he paid a 17 year old girl for sex in 2017. gaetz has denied any misconduct. president elect donald trump is fighting back against attacks from democrats that have mockingly called billionaire elon musk president musk. democrats have taken this line of attack against trump after musk took to his social media platform x and effectively blackmailed republicans into killing a bipartisan government spending bill last week. democrats have been calling out musk and his

morning, where you do notice some of that fog underneath the light. so it's a cloudy morning. we have some mist and drizzle in spots. it's also mild. you step outside, you wonder, i don't need that many layers right now. upper 50s, lower 60s. we keep it pretty cloudy and mild all day long, with on and off light showers into the 60s later on today. now, looking at our statewide airports, we do have an issue at sfo this morning because of low cloud cover. there's a ground delay program in effect. so flights departing to sfo are being delayed almost an hour. other airports are doing just fine, but sfo has some visibility issues this morning. it's a level one today. light showers, slick roads out there and along the coast. we can't emphasize this enough. we have a high surf warning in effect for some very high waves throughout the day. wave heights in a lot of areas right now 11 to 16ft. we could see breakers in excess of 30ft. so that is life threatening. swimming and surfing conditions out there with our active ocean current. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. we have a cold front moving through this
