in venice. it's tuesday, december 24th. >> from abc news. this is good morning america. first look. >> good morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to all of you. i'm rhiannon ally. we begin this morning with luigi mangione, the suspected gunman in the killing of the united health care ceo. >> mangione appeared at a manhattan courthouse yesterday. the accused murderer was in shackles and accompanied by his lawyer, who expressed concerns about the fairness of his trial. luigi mangione yesterday, entering 11 not guilty pleas to state murder and terror charges in the fatal shooting of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. >> how do you plead to this indictment, sir? guilty or not guilty? >> not guilty. >> the 26 year old said little in his first appearance in state court, but was seen occasionally cracking a smile. mangione, now facing state charges including first degree murder in furtherance of terrorism. that's in addition to the federal charges already brought against him. the now clean cut mangione

was brought into court in shackles around his hands and feet. he wore a maroon sweater and white collared shirt, a stark contrast to the orange jumpsuit he wore when he arrived in new york. in court, his lawyer accused authorities of using that perp walk to taint the jury pool, describing it as unprecedented. >> they are literally treating him like he is like like some sort of political fodder, like some sort of spectacle. he was on display for everyone to see in the biggest staged perp walk i've ever seen in my career. and what was the new york city mayor doing at this press conference? your honor, that just made it utterly political. >> mayor adams responding, saying he wanted his appearance to send a strong message. >> this person struck at the heart of our safety, and i wanted to be there when he came back to the city. >> outside the courthouse, people gathering in the freezing cold in support of the accused killer. it comes as donations to a legal defense fund have topped

more than $190,000. the widespread support for mangione has been sharply criticized by officials, who label his actions as inexcusable. mangione is back in federal custody. a conviction on the state charges could result in life in prison without parole, while a conviction on the federal charges could mean a death sentence. >> turning now to former president bill clinton in the hospital this morning after developing a fever. an aide announced that clinton was admitted to georgetown university medical center in washington for testing and observation, adding that he remains in good spirits. clinton is 78. he was treated for several heart related issues over the years, including a quadruple bypass surgery back in 2004. >> now to a closer look into the scathing report on former congressman matt gaetz. donald trump's first pick for attorney general. abc's nicole d'antonio is in washington with those findings. and how the former congressman is responding this morning. good morning. >> well that's right andrew, good morning to you. after a years long investigation that included 14,000 documents and

more than two dozen interviews, the house ethics committee has shared their findings into the conduct of former congressman matt gaetz. this morning, continued fallout into the alleged conduct of former congressman and trump ally matt gaetz. the bipartisan house ethics committee found substantial evidence that gaetz violated multiple state laws, including accusing him of illegal drug use and allegedly paying nearly $100,000 to 12 different women for sex between 2017 and 2020. according to the report, gaetz allegedly had sex with a teenager in 2017. he was a freshman congressman, and she had just finished her junior year of high school. gaetz maintains he did nothing wrong. >> i have not had a relationship with a 17 year old. that is totally false. >> the woman, known as victim a, testified to the committee that gaetz had sex with her twice at a party after she, quote, recalled receiving $400 in cash from representative gaetz that evening, which she understood to be payment for sex. victim said

she never told gaetz she was under 18 at the time and he did not ask. the house ethics committee said the relationship still violated the statutory rape law in florida. president elect donald trump originally tapped gates to be his next attorney general. however, gates withdrew his name from consideration after facing intense scrutiny from leaks surrounding the report. now, gates had filed a lawsuit against the committee to try and block its release. when that failed, gates claimed on social media that he's being unfairly targeted. rhiannon. >> all right. thank you for that report, nicole. a man accused of setting a woman on fire on a new york city subway and then watching her burn, has been charged with murder and arson. he has been identified as 33 year old sebastian zepeda. authorities say he's an undocumented migrant from guatemala who snuck back into the u.s. after he was deported back in 2018. >> security cameras captured the moment a boat exploded at a marina in fort lauderdale. one person was killed and five others. five others were injured in monday's blast. investigators say the boat had been parked

near fuel pumps at the lauderdale marina. flames from the explosion spread to another vessel. >> now we go to central california, where powerful waves have been pounding the coastline there. a strengthening storm fueling the surf, which is already knocked down a historic wharf and claimed at least one life. this morning, one person is dead after high surf on the central coast of california turned deadly. authorities say a large wave trapped a man underneath debris on sunset state beach monday morning. he was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. oh my god. that powerful surf also taking out part of a historic pier nearby. video shows the santa cruz wharf bobbing in the water. two men seen waving their arms as they stood stranded on the floating debris. rescuers on a jet ski quickly rushing to the scene to get the man back to shore. the coast guard says a third person was able to swim to safety. heavy surf in the area, prompting authorities to issue an evacuation order for a number

of beachfront homes just south of santa cruz at nearby marina state beach. a search for a man swept out to sea by strong surf was called off. a strengthening storm expected to bring hurricane force winds and waves as high as 60ft from california to the pacific northwest, with alerts in place through today. it comes as a winter blast hits the northeast, bringing snow and frigid temperatures as millions of americans arrive at their destinations ahead of christmas tomorrow. parts of new england could see up to a half a foot of snow, with icy conditions expected in philadelphia, baltimore and d.c. but that storm may have a silver lining for those hoping for a white christmas. >> we're going to see it in the mountains, out west and of course, in the northern tier, upper midwest and great lakes and interior northeast. but for a change, we could actually get some snow right down to the coast in the northeast. the first white christmas here in new york city since 2009. >> back to that collapsed wharf in santa cruz, california. the remaining portion of the pier is

closed indefinitely to allow for safety checks. >> the bomb squad was called in after a potentially explosive discovery at lax. tsa agents found fireworks, knives, replica firearms and pepper spray in a woman's carry on last week. she was heading to philadelphia. no word on charges. the items were confiscated while the strike before christmas against starbucks grows as it now enters day five. >> baristas in boston were among those joining the walkout monday. staffers nationwide are calling for better pay and better work conditions. today is expected to be the final day of the walkout. the company says only a handful of locations have been impacted. >> time now for a look at your morning weather. >> good morning, andrew and rhiannon on this christmas eve. we have some snow early in the day for some, and a little bit of freezing rain or sleet. that will be problematic for some in a narrow zone from philadelphia down to near d.c, baltimore, wilmington in there. it won't be a lot of it, but even just a very thin, razor thin layer of

injuries. officials say the ship rolled because its cargo was unbalanced. >> new mexico prosecutors won't pursue an appeal of a court's decision to dismiss an involuntary manslaughter charge against alec baldwin. the charge for killing a cinematographer on the rust movie set was dismissed in july. attorneys for alec baldwin say the news is the final vindication. >> now to north carolina, where an officer was killed in a supermarket shootout. the suspect leading police on a high speed chase this morning. authorities in greensboro, north carolina, mourning the death of an officer and father just two days before christmas. >> we want to honor the life and service of officer michael heron. who was killed in the line of duty this morning. >> officer michael heron, a six year veteran of the force, was responding to a report of a man walking the aisles of this food lion grocery store with a pistol in his pocket just before 11 a.m. when shots rang out. >> gunshots inside the food

more than two dozen interviews, the house ethics committee has shared their findings into the conduct of former congressman matt gaetz. this morning, continued fallout into the alleged conduct of former congressman and trump ally matt gaetz. the bipartisan house ethics committee found substantial evidence that gaetz violated multiple state laws, including accusing him of illegal drug use and allegedly paying nearly $100,000 to 12 different women for sex between 2017 and 2020. according to the report, gaetz allegedly had sex with a teenager in 2017. he was a freshman congressman, and she had just finished her junior year of high school. gaetz maintains he did nothing wrong. >> i have not had a relationship with a 17 year old. that is totally false. >> the woman, known as victim a, testified to the committee that gaetz had sex with her twice at a party after she, quote, recalled receiving $400 in cash from representative gaetz that evening, which she understood to be payment for sex. victim said
